Barnes’ three “strengths”:
Defense, rebounding, recruiting.
This team just proved the first two are non-existent (out-rebounded by 25; fucking KIDDING me?) and the last one is over-hyped as well. Every ESPN basketball recruiting analyst who actually had Bradley ahead of Wall should be taken out back and executed Inglourious Basterds style.

mcpayne, yes, you don’t leave that shit to chance. You don’t let your guys break the huddle or dead ball not knowing precisely what’s expected from them. Barnes doesn’t get 2 mil for coaching PE where he’s hoping the right guy gets fouled.

mpayne, I’d agree with you if J’Covan had been playing all season and had been in situations to make that decision. Like, you know, against Baylor, when he played all of 3 fucking minutes thanks to rick.
So yes, it is rick’s fault.

With 15 seconds left, out of a dead ball, most coaches would make it perfectly clear who they wanted to be fouled.

Stupid decisions by Brown are one of the reasons he sat on the bench for most of the season…lack of coaching maybe, or just a lack of basketball IQ?
Oh well, if Brown doesn’t go off in the 2nd half, we aren’t even playing in OT. Too bad he didn’t get much of a chance

“The defense is light years better.” Not sure I buy into the defense just yet. Blake Gideon is still starting and will be because Christian Scott can’t find the classroom. No Christian Scott. No Jared Norton. No Deon Beasley. D-line still a question mark. Lot of football left.
Also, Michael Huey is out. Brandon Collins is out. Yes, it’s nice to see Chiles and Buckner succeed, but it’s only one game.

It was a blowout win over a Louisiana directional school. Tap the breaks on the claims of GG greatness, Shepherd failure, and tales of your chubby when a linebacker makes a play on a ball thrown by a kid who probably wouldn’t start for SMU.

I don’t think he ever implied that Shepard is a failure. And the GG “claims” were only on the things that we definitely know. I went to Saturday’s game, saw him in a practice and even went to a high school game of his, he’s very competent and ahead of his age. He has the accuracy and timing in him for sure. He won’t be perfect all the time (see Colt 2nd year), but with good coaching along the way I’m pretty convinced the future is bright for Texas QBing.

CA,
Fun stuff. I think most people are less excited about the first game but they are looking at the sum outcome (not important in a scrimmage) instead of the indications about the individual parts.
I agree with your sentiments about the defense. A lot of people aren’t going to buy in until we have about 8 wins under our belt but we are markedly better as a defensive unit this year compared to last. We were nails in the red zone and our defensive backs and linebackers played with much more confidence than at this point last year. You can question the defensive line, but they looked stout in the redzone and frankly I could give a shit if we are good against the run outside of the redzone. Defense is situational… the majority of our fanbase will get that eventually. We were vanilla and we got pressure. There is no question that this defense is going to create a lot more turnovers… the speed and aggressiveness are going to translate.
On offense I am extremely pleased with the developments from the first game. We are infusing a shitload of speed into an incredibly consistent passing offense. Combine that with Monroe in the backfield (or as a dumpoff option) and you are going to see defenses that are already stretched too thin get ripped for some big plays. Basically, it looks like we will still convert 3rds on a good clip but we are a hell of a lot more dangerous on 1st and 2nd.
Our running scheme is shit but it may not matter since that will put the game in McCoy’s hands more. This is gonna be damn fun to watch.

Mack Brown’s stud frosh QB sees the field and collects his first collegiate completions and TD. By contrast, Les Miles’ stud frosh QB got neither (though, admittedly, his doughty Tigers were exchanging inashi with the winless-since-2007 Huskies).
Surely Les is redshirting young Russell to ensure his full flower at (full Cajun accent here) “le position de dos du quartier”. Surely.

My only point was that it seemed a bit Hornsfan.comish or Texags.comish to start anointing players with a tiny sample size against a sub par opponent.
I’d tell the same thing to Ag fans pissing themselves over a blowout win over the New Mexicans.

Saw GG as a soph. A buddy of mine was the opposing coach. He’s won a state title and knows his defense. He told me after the game that he threw everything including the kitchen sink against that sophomore and nothing rattled him. He said that as great as his arm is, it is his composure and maturity that impressed him.

GG is what happens when dad is an ex NFL QB who meticulously grooms his son for the NFL. GG provides two kinds of insurance:
1) you can play him a bunch of minutes, thus reducing the probability of Colt getting hurt
2) if Colt does get hurt, GG is a promising backup QB
The Heisman race is now a two man race: Colt and Tebow. The easiest ways for either guy to lose the race is to either get hurt or lose a game. Florida is more likely than UT to lose a game because of the SEC competition. Colt is more likely to get hurt because Tebow is a behemoth and Colt does not protect himself as much as he should. Colt is going to end up with more impressive passing stats than Tebow because UT is going to pass more and Colt is a better passer. The single most important thing that Mack can do to help Colt win the Heisman is to help Colt stay healthy. Mack can do this by playing GG a lot, encouraging Colt to get rid of the ball when he can’t throw on rhythm, and to get down or out of bounds rather than take a hit when he is running. Colt should remember that local optimization is often at the cost of global optimization.
Chiles is one of those guys who is bigger than the guys who are faster than him and faster than the guys who are bigger than him. That makes him tough to cover. I see the parallels with Quan but I’m not ready to put him up there with Quan (I always genuflect and/or cross myself when I say Quan’s name) but Chiles doesn’t need to be since he is the 3rd or 4th option at receiver, not the first option. I doubt that Chiles will make the amazing catches that Quan made but he has the advantage of being 4 or 5 inches taller than Quan. Chiles’ size will make it tough for a CB to contest 50-50 balls. This is a big deal because the deep ball is not Colt’s strong point. Chiles’ size is going to be a big help on short passes because he will be able to shield the ball from the defender with his body more efficiently than a smaller player. Chiles is also faster than Quan. Chiles will also throw the option pass much better than Quan.
If your first 4 WRs are Ship, Buckner, Malcolm, and Chiles then Kirk will still get all the snaps he wants as the number 1 backup for the WR positions (i.e. not flex TE). That means that in one season Ship goes from being our tallest WR to our shortest WR and the only starting receiver less than 200 pounds.
I’m worried about losing Christian and Beasley. If we must lose a player because of academic failure, I hope it is Collins rather than Christian and Beasley.

The thing that struck me was how violent the hitting was by the defense. I haven’t seen Texas players hit with anger like that in a long time. Mean is not an adjective you typically ascribe to the Longhorn defense, but they tended to arrive with fury in a style that reminded me of early decade Miami.
hopefulhorn said:

I tend to side with CA here in that I got excited (interpret that word however you like) about the same things.
Gilbert: accuracy, size, arm strength, decent wheels all seem to be givens. Most impressive to me was presence. He was decisive in his reads and as a result threw and ran without hesitation. Vince had obvious raw physical talent from the start but lacked consistent presence until his last year when he had it in spades. Small sample size on GG to be sure and he will struggle at some point(s). We could not have asked for or scripted a better start.
Team speed: holy jumping Jesus do we have some fast, talented kids. Monroe showed the most “wow” but Chiles, Buckner and Goodwin (hands!) jumped out at me too. Get ‘em all on the field (add more of Malcolm Williams), spread the ball around, and watch defenses shit their drawers.
Overall defensive coherence and nasty: The defense looked much more settled into their roles and schemes. As a result, less hesitation and more confidence enabled more aggressive play. Hoped for improvement in Muschamp’s second year.
All told, I came away thinking this team has talent, identity and focus that is rarely found all together. Looking forward to a fun year.

“When you get a group for whom violence is fun then you are pretty much guaranteed a show.”
