Colt McCoy and the Record-books, UT & NCAA

Posted by CallKevin on September 9th, 2009 under Football

The UT SID Staff has done a great job of documenting Colt’s career in their gameday notes—the Wyoming notes are here (13 career, 12 single-season, five single-game, six freshman and six miscellaneous marks) – See below.

Here’s what jumped out to me.

Career:

1) Career wins: Colt is at 33, three ahead of VY (30). My informal research showed that’s top 20 all-time, and two more puts him in the top 10; three more is top 5. The all-time record is David Greene’s 42.

2) Career passing TD’s: Colt is at 87 today, 27 ahead of the record Major set with 60. Chris had 58, JB had 53, Vince 44, Peter Gardere 37, Shea and Bobby Layne 25 each, Bret Stafford 23, and Todd Dodge had 18. Colt is now 18th all-time among NCAA D-1 FBS QB’s. He’s 2 from the top 15 (which would pass Chris Leak and tei Byron Leftwich, and Peyton Manning); 12 from the top 10 (passing David Klingler, Brady Quinn, Philip Rivers, and Kliff Kingsbury and tying Matt Leinart); and 33 from the top 5 (passing Chad Pennington, Chase Daniel, and Danny Wuerffel).

3) Career total offense: Colt has 11,269 to date, putting him well ahead of the former Texas career mark Vince set of 9,167. Peyton Manning was 28th on the all-time NCAA TO list going into 2008, and Peyton was at 11,201. Colt is 95 from the top 25 all-time; 307 from the top 20; 1,349 from the top 10; 2,446 yards from the top 5; and 3,471 from the top 3.

4) Career passing yards: Colt is at 10,049 yards, which puts him in 1st-place all-time at Texas, 1,696 yards ahead of Major’s mark of 8,353. That would have put him top 50 all-time back in 2005. If Colt picks up another 864 yards, he hits the top 30 all-time. With 1,035 more in his career, he will be in the top 25 all-time (11,084). With 2,466 more, he will be in the top 10 all time. Another 3,435 and he’s top 5. 1 other active QB’s, Dan LeFevour of Central Michigan, is at 9,575. No other active QB is within 1,500 yards of Colt.

5) Career Passing Efficiency: Colt’s mark is 158.57, well ahead of VY at 141.8 in the second spot, followed by Chance (138.9), Chris (138.4), and Major (136.6). 158.57 puts him in the top 10 all-time in NCAA D-1 history.

6) Career TD’s responsible for: Colt is at 104, putting him 23 ahead of Vince’s mark set at 81. I can’t find a full NCAA list on that category, but I see Colt Brennan & Graham Harrell (tied at 146), Ty Detmer (135), Timmy Change (123), Danny Wuerffel (122), Tim Rattay (117), *Tim Tebow (112), Matt Leinart (108), and *Dan LeFevour (108) ahead of him. I’d guess there are others, but not too many.

7) Career completion %: Colt is at 70.27%–putting him well ahead of the greatest marks at UT (VY 61.8%, Chris 58.7%, Richard Walton 57.9%, Major 57.4%). Among the 27 players with 11,000+ passing yards in NCAA history, only two completed more than 68% of their passes. Only 8 completed more than 65%.

8.) Career win %: Colt is at 82.5% (33-7), just ahead of Bobby Layne (82.4%), but well behind Robert Brewer (86.7%), VY (93.8%), and James Street (100%). It won’t be possible for Colt to catch the top 2, but an undefeated finish to his career this season would put him in third, barely edging out Brewer.

9) Career completions: Colt’s 846 are 235 ahead of Major’s 611. Graham Harrell (1403) is the record-holder. 10 players have over 1000 completions. 3 have over 1150.

10) Career attempts: Colt’s 1,204 are 139 more than Major’s 1065. Timmy Chang (2436) is the record-holder. 9 players have over 1600 attempts.

11) Colt has 30 200+ passing yard games, just past Major for the UT record. 12 of those games were in 2008, which beat Major’s season mark.

12) Colt has 11 300+ passing yard games, two ahead of the old UT record by Major. Colt threw for 300+ 6 times in 2008, setting a new season mark. He’s got 1 in 2009.

Season:

1) Colt’s completion % in 2008 was 76.7%, the highest of any UT QB with 12+ attempts in a season. James Brown set the old mark of 69.6%. Colt’s consistency was incredible-his WORST % game was 70.0% until Tech, when he fell all the way to 58.8%. 76.7% shattered the NCAA mark.

2) Single-Season Passing Efficiency: Colt finished 2008 at 173.8, 14th in NCAA history. He’s at 180.10 in 2009.

3) Single-season total offense: Colt had 4,420 yards in 2008, the best season in Texas history–#2 was behind Vince’s 4,086 in 2005. Colt’s total was the 29th best single-season in NCAA history, and only 4 of the top 30 rushed for 500+ yards in their season. 314 so far in 2009.

4) Single-season passing yards: Colt had 3,859 in 2008, breaking Major’s record of 3,357 set in 1999 by 502 yards. 2009: Colt’s at 317 in 2009.

5) Single-season passing TD’s: in the 2008 season, with 34 TD passes, Colt broke his own mark of 29 set in 2006. Chris Simms and Vince Young’s best mark was 26. Colt’s 22 in 2007 tied him with Chris for 4th-all-time (5th now). 2 so far in 2009.

6) Colt now owns the consecutive completions mark for a game (18, set against Oklahoma State). He had previously set the mark at 17 in one game after setting the mark of 13 in one game, and had tied the mark of 15 over two games. Of the 14 streaks of 9 or more consecutive completions in UT history, 10 are Colt’s. Vince had 2 (15 & 14), Chris had 1 (11), and Major had 1 (9).

7) Colt has 18 consecutive games with a passing TD, the 2nd-longest streak in UT history (Major had 19).

8.) In 2008, the Texas offense had 125 drives under Colt, scoring 72 times (62 TD’s, 10 FG’s). That’s 3.8 points per drive, 49.6% TD’s, and 57.6% of the time ending in a score. By comparison, Vince’s best finish was 50.3% TD’s, 59.6% scores, and 3.7 points per drive; Chris Simms’ best season was 33.6% TD’s and 2.7 ppd in 2001; and Major’s best was 32% in 2001 and 2.5 ppd in 1998.

9) Colt owns the single-season completion record, with 332 in 2008. He’s at 21 in 2009.

10) Colt set the record with 38 completions in one game, vs Oklahoma State, in 2008.

11) Colt owns the single-game passing TD record (6) and completion % (90.63%).

Freshman records:
1) Freshman Passing TD’s, season: Colt had 29, setting a national mark; next-best UT freshman (the Major) had 18. After that you drop to Shea Morenz (13), then James Brown (12), then Mark Murdock (10). Vince was next, with 6.

2) Freshman Single game passing TD’s: Colt had 6 once, 4 once, 3 twice. 6 is the record (JB had 5 & 4; Major 4, 3, & 3; Shea 3; Mark 3).

3) Freshman Passing yards, season: Colt had 2,570; next-best was Major (2,453).

4) Freshman Total offense, season: Colt had 2,740; next-best was Major (2,390).

  1. Unfortunately, all his records won’t stand for much in the collective memories of UT fans if he doesn’t get a Big XII or MNC title on that list.

  2. This is why Colt runs away with the heisman… Bout the time the voters will be getting their ballots. (A&M game) Colt will be breaking records left and right and be in the top 5 of almost any category that matters.

  3. Well, it depends. If we’ve got two losses (or probably even one) then it won’t matter. It’s not like a lot of the guys he’ll be passing on these lists have Heismans either.

  4. Yeah, but I still kinda like that VY guy.

  5. Yeah, sorry, but there’s a snowball’s chance in Hell that Colt wins the Heisman.

The sports media could announce it to the entire nation every single time Colt broke a record, got into the Top 5, etc. (which they won’t) and he’d still be playing second fiddle to the reincarnation of our Lord and Savior, the Most High, the Alpha and the Omega, the Shade in the Heat of the Day, the Lord of the Mountain, the Great Devourer of the Souls of Evil Men, the Rock, the Hammer, the Father of the Sea and All Those Who Dwell Within, and the Supreme Ruler of the Multiverse. . .Jesus Tebow.

It’s going to be a freaking hoot watching another Texas QB get screwed out of that award. Oh wait, Colt already got screwed out of it last season. So let’s just say it’ll be a hoot watching a third Heisman award go to someone who isn’t half the player our guy is.

Then again, that’s probably a good thing. Since the Hypesman is a joke, isn’t worth the nickle and tin it’s made out of, and is basically the death-knell for a guy’s NFL career.

Plus, it’d make me all warm and tingly in my nether regions to see Mack and Colt finally go over the edge with bloodlust and rage and completely let loose against Lord Tebow and the Fighting Urbans in the title game.

  6. I’m with Nordberg here. Even though it is an individual award, staying undefeated is at least as important. Not fair, but the way it is.

  7. I still remember ESPN fighting with everything they had to get Reggie Bush the Heisman, you couldn’t turn on ESPN without seeing a Barbara Walters style story on R. Bush
Last year the coverage was will it be Bradford or Tebow oh and that uh colt kid in Texas.
Now Colt wins more games than any other QB in history and almost no mention on any ESPN show or national media outlet?
Let’s see The Horns and Mack do what they did in ‘05 F__K the national media!

Wow, louisville as a 9 will give Duke all they want in the second round.

The TAMU vs. UTAH state battle of the aggies might be played in the 40’s.

Siena will beat Purdue. Bank it. They probably win their next game.

Nova as a one seed an overseed.

Don’t listen to Seth Davis, Texas is a shell and Wisconsin is over seeded as a four. Kentucky will run them out of he gym. Kentucky walks to elite 8 where WVU will have something for them.

In the West, Syracuse has a walk to the sweet sixteen, but Butler can give them problems.

Syracuse gets KSU as their two so it looks like either Kentucky or Duke is stuck with WVU. Tough break. Pitt as a three is a joke. If I’m Self I’m really pissed now. KU

Midwest 1 goes to Kansas, no surprise they deserve it. They’ll face Lehigh who happens to have a pretty athletic frontcourt for a 16.

Kansas got a tough breaking drawing Maryland on the four line. There was talk the terps could be a 3.

For my money the race for Player of the Year isn’t all that close. Sorry John Wall. My apologies Wes Johnson. Evan Turner is the most dynamic and talented player in the college game today. He’s built like a hybrid wing, handles like point guard, and shoots it like a sniper.

    Ripley,

Agreed 100%. I meant only to observe that Metoyer wasn’t a guy like Stills (once recorded running a 4.36) who just really impresses you with his speed, too. That’s one of the reasons I think Stills ends up being the 4th WR in the rotation by conference play.

Neon, you might be right about Kentucky, but I’m still worried about their athleticism and I’m not sure K-State has anyone to match up with Cousins inside. Plus, it’s KSU’s offense that has been struggling lately, so I would be afraid of getting into a high-scoring game, even if Kentucky isn’t great defensively. As for

Syracuse invites teams to get the ball inside where James and Johnson are comfortable even if they are contesting it much better from there than
