Texas Monthly gave UT a Bum Steer award a few years back for their “We’re Texas” slogan.
Apparrently GSDM was originally hired by Tech to advertise their medical school’s clinic.
There were billboards all over West Texas with “We’re Texas Tech” slogan.

A few years later GSDM came up with “We’re Texas” for UT ( and charged the university some big bucks ).
