The Little Class That Could

Posted by Scipio Tex on August 10th, 2009 under Football, Recruiting

The 2002 class may be our gold standard, but 2005 was platinum. We didn’t need much to extract real value.

A h/t to Rivals/Orangebloods for this list of 15 signees from 2005.

This tiny class of 15 came in ranked #20 in the country and caused much consternation amongst our fan base. Particularly when you consider the historical context of that time and a succession of five straight OU losses.

We took some guys who proved to be flat out ballers for us.

Mind you, in raw points, we were outpaced by such luminaries as Maryland and Virginia and were lapped by traditional rivals OU (#3 in the country), Nebraska (#5), and A&M (#8).

We had the last laugh.

Let’s take a look at this class – in order of Rivals ranking:

Jamaal Charles RB 6-1 185 4.4 6.0 Port Arthur, TX

An elite back, one of the most explosive players in the history of Longhorn football. Had JC stuck around for his senior year, you’re looking at a 5,000+ yard career rushing mark and someone mentioned solidly behind Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams in the pantheon of demi-god running backs.

Henry Melton ATH 6-3 275 4.6 6.0 Grapevine, TX

If Henry agrees to a position switch as a freshman, you’re looking at a 2nd round draft pick and an All Big 12 DE. He’ll blossom in the NFL with the Bears. Take notes Chris Whaley.

Roy Miller DT 6-2 302 5 6.0 Killeen, TX

What did I tell you about this class? It just keeps coming. Big Roy dominated in his senior year after promising freshman and sophomore campaigns and an injury riddled junior year. He even added a pass rush to his run stopping repertoire. Barring injury, he’ll play eight years in the league and retire to a life of luxury and BBQ.

Jermichael Finley TE 6-4 210 4.6 5.9 Diboll, TX

Oh, what could have been. One of the best pure athletes to ever play the TE position at Texas would have been mentioned in the same breath as Gresham, Coffman, and Pettigrew had he stuck around. He’d drop a ball or two on you, but his ability to use a LB in space or outjump a safety in the end zone made for a reasonable trade off.

Chris Brown LB 6-3 210 4.45 5.8 Texarkana, TX

He never made it on campus. We parted ways with Chris after he was accused of a felony. Oklahoma State took him in. My bad. That was CHRIS COLLINS.

Chris Brown didn’t pan and transferred out as a sophomore.

Aaron Lewis DE 6-3 265 4.6 5.8 Albuquerque, NM

A solid starter at DE who lost his job to Henry Melton and gave us great depth at DT in his senior year. He didn’t put up gaudy statistics, but he was a very solid program guy for us. Still made one of the best open field tackles on DeMarco Murray back in ‘07 Adrian Peterson in ‘06 that I’ve seen.

Ishie Oduegwu DB 5-10 185 4.5 5.8 Denton, TX

The beginning of a string of bizarre DB evaluations by Duane Akina & Mack Brown. He started some games for us and played hard, but injuries took him down.

Quan Cosby ATH 5-11 200 4.4 – Mart, TX

What can you say? Arguably the toughest, guttiest talent maximizer we’ve had under Brown. His productivity as a senior was through the roof and he did it against the best teams on our schedule. A complete football player in every respect. A great Longhorn in every sense.

Michael Houston RB 6-0 220 4.6 5.7 Denver, CO

Played a year here and transferred to Washington. Then he was kicked off of the team after he stole a taxi in front of a strip club. Absolutely fantastic, IMO. A lot of people believed that he would have been a player had he kept his head on straight. No idea of what became of him after that.

Roddrick Muckelroy LB 6-2 215 4.5 5.7 Hallsville, TX

A very good LB who will play his best year in ‘09. He cleans up the trash, he likes to hit, and he made Beanie Wells cry Uncle in the 3rd quarter of the Fiesta Bowl. He’ll leave here as two-time 2nd team all-conference guy and for a LB at Texas over the last twenty years, that’s roughly comparable to being an All-American DL.

Jerrell Wilkerson RB 5-7 170 4.41 5.7 San Antonio, TX

Wow. Gave up his scholarship in order to pursue a career at Taco Bueno and be with his girlfriend. Teenagers have such awesome perspective on life.

Chris Hall OL 6-5 285 5 5.6 Irving, TX

The human Swiss Army knife isn’t a great player, but any Texas center that doesn’t play on rollerskates gets my blessing. He certainly has done whatever the program has asked of him and he’s a high effort guy.

Colt McCoy QB 6-1 180 4.72 5.6 Tuscola, TX

Ah, the lowly Colt McCoy – he of a feeble 5.6 Rivals score and barely three stars. I remember actively defending him as a take by comparing him to former Westlake QB Adam Hall (you remember him back in ‘99, transferred to SDSU and played well) – a serviceable college QB with some mobility and a little touch on the ball. Even in defending McCoy, I mocked his ability.

There are three QBs in Texas football that belong on the platform of demi-gods: Layne, Young, McCoy. And spare me your mewling and mindless James Street retort drilled into you by Texas mythology. I’m talking about greatness.

Charlie Tanner OL 6-4 268 5.03 5.6 Austin, TX

A two year starter. Like Hall, he has not been a great player, but he is a legitimate candidate for a senior surprise. They can’t all be Justin Blalock.

Trevor Gerland K 6-1 190 4.42 – Katy, TX

Never did get to see that sprinter’s speed on a fake punt, Trevor.

When you consider that we really only took 13 guys – excluding Collins – who never made it on campus – and the punter Gerland, who is a goddamn kicker – the class ended up with an extraordinary number of good and great players. 10 of 13 panned out to varying degrees. 6/7 of the 13 turned out to be straight up studs. Pretty much unheard of.

Hard to find a class that can hang with that on a per capita basis.

The Aaron Lewis tackle I think of was against Adrian P, I believe.

Also, the felony LB Chris had a different last name, right? Collins? Brown was a guy that, IIRC, was a tweener DE/LB who never found his spot.

  3. Damn, my bad on AD.

I believe I have the right Chris Brown. Texarkana Chris Brown.

  4. Collins never signed with us, IIRC.

Wasn’t there another LB in that class that also never signed, for some strange reason? I’m blanking on the name. Brandon something maybe.

  5. “Still made one of the best open field tackles on DeMarco Murray back in ‘07 that I’ve seen. ”

Sub Murray with Peterson and ‘07 with ‘06 and then you have it right.

  6. You’re right. Didn’t mean to imply that he did. But he was a commitment. I suppose Rivals never updated our team page.

Chris Collins was charged with statutory rape, had his schollie offer retracted, and ended up at Ok State.

I’m pretty sure Chris Brown actually arrived on campus here and didn’t find his niche. Can’t recall if he finished here or not.

Am I crazy? Well, yes. But am I mistaken?

  8. Chris Brown was never involved with the rape. That was Chris Collins and Mike Gundy started him all the way until he was sentenced.

  9. Jinx.

  10. Got it. Chris Brown was the dude who ended up transferring to Sam Houston, I believe.

    Really appreciate the correction.

I’m almost positive Ishie was a very late addition (decommit from Tech?) when the coaches whiffed on their top choices. Same with Hall (decommit from Tech or OSU?0, who was our backup, backup plan, after whiffs on favorites and a miss on a late swing at Ciron Black.

Chris “Brown” should be Chris Collings. Off the field stuff killed what looked like it was going to be a very good LB class with Muck, Collins and Duncan.

Wilkerson was set to play for Incarnate Word when they start their team this year, but was having grade issues last I heard.

Are you sure you aren’t thinking about the open field tackle Lewis made on A. Peterson in the 2006 game? That one shocked everyone in the stadium and on tv.

I suck at the intertron, but that link has this:

07/29/2009 – 2009 PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM: DL Chris Brown, Sam Houston State, 6-2, 220, Sr., Texarkana, Texas, has been selected Preseason All-Southland Conference Football First Team for the 2009 college football season. Brown, senior from Texarkana, TX, is a two-time All-Southland first team defensive end. He was named to the College Sports News All-America squad in 2008 and Sports Network honorable mention All-America in 2007. Brown finished No. 3 in QB sacks (9) and No. 4 in tackles for losses (11) in the Southland in 2008. He ranks No. 14 all-time at SHSU with 14 career sacks. – Sam Houston State football
01/04/2009 – 2008 ALL-SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM: DL Chris Brown, Sam Houston State, Jr., has been selected All-Southland Conference Football First Team for the 2008 college football season as voted on by the league head coaches. – Sam Houston State football

You have the wrong Chris- I think you’re thinking of Chris Collins. Chris Brown lettered as a 215# DE in 2005, transfered to SHSU, redshirted, and is looking to be the Southland conference’s top defensive end for a second straight year- at 225#. He’s definitely a player, but would have needed to be bigger at Texas.

Agree that Charles played very well, though I wouldn’t put him in the same league with Earl and Ricky, who were undeniably dominant.

  15. Brandon Duncan, that’s the other LB. Thanks Horncasting.

From what I remember, there was some simple reason why he didn’t sign his LOI on signing day, like his pen ran out of ink or something. And then he just never signed.

  16. Yes, yes. We have that all established now. I suck and should not do these things from memory.

  17. Chris Brown lost his shirt on the first game of his freshman year in 2005 and recorded a sack. Would have likely played with Orakpo at end if he had been able to stay healthy at Texas.

Ishie was a selection by Chizik. We passed on him until we hired our new DC who had man crush on safeties who could not cover but tackle well and stop the run.

  18. Parlin –

I’d place him 3rd behind them had he stayed. Charles was pretty dominant when his blocking was worth a shit. Imagine a whole other year with last year’s team. He would have put up some numbers.

Oh, great post, btw. Here is an interesting stat- total commits for OU from 2005 – 2009: 120. Total 2005 – 2009 commits for TAMU: 120. Total commits for Texas in that period: 104. I think OU gets the most JC recruits, and TAMU gets the second-most JC recruits, but has more guys not make it in. Three guys fewer per year consistently is not insignificant.

“From what I remember, there was some simple reason why he didn’t sign his LOI on signing day, like his pen ran out of ink or something. And then he just never signed.”

I always get the two confused, but one of the LB’s was charged with statutory rape and the other with the fraudulent use of a credit card. Both had their offers revoked. I believe Duncan signed with Kansas.

How fucking cool/sad simultaneously is it that we all (well, all except for Scipio) so vividly remember a guy rising above his ability 3 years ago to make an open field tackle?

I love that about football and, in general, about being a guy. What’s my anniversary date? No clue. But I can describe to you with flawless recall how Renfro’s TD-that-wasn’t paved the way for instant replay, give you the GPS coordinates for where Ralph Sampson was on the floor when he hit the Laker-sinker, and elucidate on the career stats of Hercules Walls.

Scipio – sorry for the nitpicking. Great post and the point stands.

Hopefully not to steal any thunder, but the obvious follow up to this is how the huge, highly ranked 2006 class petered out. 25 signees, currently breaking out as:

9 no longer with the team (including 1 who took a DT from another class down with him).

4-6 who have had no impact and probably won’t during their time on the 40.

    2-3 significant/chronic injuries limiting them.

    5-6 solid players

    5 studs (all on defense)

  26. No nitpicking percieved at all. This is a bunch of a dudes in a sports bar having a convo. Gently mocking people who miss facts or confuse DeMarco Murray with Adrian Peterson is encouraged.

I also looked at the classes before and after 2005 – they can’t hang with ’05’s ratios.

Thoughts of Charles and Finley on last year’s team are still painful ones. We don’t lose to Tech (or Florida) with those guys on the field, freshmen secondary and opponents’ divinity bedamned.

And it’s ironic that Chris Brown and Brandon Collins both had drool-worthy highlight reels and both amounted to zilch.

  45. Good post on the ‘05 bunch. Last year on another site, I posted a piece on the disappointing ‘06 class, and one of the responses was, “Yeah, but 2005 made up for it.” Guy was right.

Wilkerson, Brown and Houston were gone in a heartbeat and Finley and Charles bailed after three seasons; rest of the class, save for Gerland, has been studly. (Well, Jermichael and Jamaal were good, too, just not for long.)

Never understood signing Brown; he was undersized and lacked the frame to do anything about it. He ended up where he belonged, Lone Star Conference, and has been excellent.

    7. Mark Sanchez
    8. Martellus Bennett
    9. Reginald Youngblood

What is amazing is that there were a bunch of studs from Houston we whiffed on — RJ Jackson, Bennett, Youngblood, and Lafell. We had owned Houston up to that point. Haywood was assigned to recruit Houston. He sucked at recruiting and was lazy. After Bennett visited in October we were huge leaders and he may have even been a silent commit. Haywood decides not to call him for 6 weeks and he opens it back up.

I was so happy when Haywood left and was perplexed that Notre Dame thought he could recruit well and would give them an in with Texas high school recruits.

  52. Haywood is the embodiment of the Peter Principle.

    Scip-

    Interesting Read.

I did not realize how good the class is. Only thing that I disagree with is putting Colt on the great list. Until he wins a National Championship he is not with the greats.

While I do agree that a large part of this teams success is Colt, a large part of Colts success is that he is in a system that calls for an accurate passer of 4- 7 yards.

People act like the dink and dunk has gone away but it is alive and well. The system mandates that he have that completion percentage just for us to be a functioning offense. Our offense is still three yards and a cloud of dust.

  54. By your reasoning, Bobby Layne is not a Longhorn great. But Duke Carlisle is.

Yes and no. Some of that stands in for our ‘running game’ but the windows Colt are hitting seem small and fleeting. He’s been a robot. The pass to Malcolm Williams vs. Tech was also pretty awesome.

Earl didn’t win a MNC or Super Bowl. Was he not a great one?

  60. Damn, I cannot believe Colt made that Nebraska kicker make the kick last year, or allowed Mizzou to lose to Kansas. And, why did Colt drop that interception against Tech.

Colt did about as well as he could given what was under his control last year.

  61. Maybe Colt should have made a sweet little speech after the Tech game, like Timmy did after their exhibition loss at home to Ole Miss.

You are correct. But the “as well as he could” from a great QB results in a national championship or at least a beating of a overrated squad aka Ohio State 2008-2009.

Don’t fool yourselves. That Ohio State team sucked out loud and UT almost lost the game. As Scipio has argued before, not all wins are equal.

The person that really made the offense tick last year is gone. Answer this, Who is more important in the hunt n’ peck offense? The guy throwing the 5 yard slant or the tough as nails, hands of glue, fearless guy catching the ball?
I would argue it is the receiver.

Fell apart in the fourth quarter again. Can’t give up 28 points to close out a game. Spurs, Longhorns….heartache once again.

Nice job Hiphop. Very nice to win what is probably the toughest game on the schedule handily, although the Hawks obviously caught UT at a good time.

The Morningstar FT was terrible and hilarious. He said the ball was wet, which clearly means Texas was cheating somehow. Would the second chance off balance leaner

I don’t think McCoy played anywhere near the level of Suh and the numbers make it clear that he did not. Suh had twice as many tackles (77-31), sacks (11-5) and nearly tackles for loss (22-14.5). Suh also broke up 10 passes, if he gets stonewalled on the rush he doesn’t allow it to take

Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.  This game was served up on a silver platter for the Spurs and they managed to fumble it like a Minnesota Viking in the playoffs.

I think perhaps Will Ferrell can describe my emotions on the current state of the Spurs season better than I.

EP, I get your point, but I don’t think the fact that Texas hasn’t won a tourney came as an underdog doesn’t support it. Teams are favored because they are better. The odds that they win are greater than those who are not favored. It’s not like Texas goes into games with a secret weapon

I think KU should demand an immediate investigation. Find someone to get to the bottom of this.

Good write up, hiphop. I love the versatitility of the Morris twins on defense. Xavier Henry is probably the key to a big run in the tournament. If he starts hitting open looks, the inside game will really open up. Post to post passing is fun to watch.

PB, just talking. I’m not ready to replace him but something has to change. The comment about playing 3 on 5 three quarters into the season is just astoundingly bad.

Thanks Trips. I’m hoping for lots of Willie Warren trying to be Sheron Collins. TMG in sync is the scariest thing to face in Norman. That or we get beat up on the boards which seems to be recurring theme of Texas Tech road games.

I don’t think it’s a case of RB not being able to coach, or doing a poor job of coaching. If you read the entirety of Katz’ blog post, he clearly sounds like a coaching searching for answers — answers that come in the form of players contributing, doing what they are coached to do.

I agree that an NIT bid would be acceptable this year, but that if the Razorbacks can get to 20 wins they will have a very good chance at the NCAA Tourney.

Our RPI is bad, and we have no signature wins.

However, we have 8 games left on the SEC regular season schedule. If we

I don’t think we have to win the SEC tourny necessarily. If we make it to the SEC Tourny championship game and have won about 20 games, I would say a tourny bid would look likely. But that is a pretty big task. I know no one cares about the NIT, but that wouldnt be
