2009 Media Preseason Big 12 Team

OU has eight first team players. We have four. I hope we can stay within five touchdowns of them in Dallas. HenryJames think that depth is more crucial than marquee media names. I agree.
I’m not a big fan of preseason All-Star teams as they tend to be a recognition of the players that journalists are most familiar with, taking inordinate input from coaches and SIDs who want to reward their seniors and “program guys” – last year, OU’s Jon Cooper was their preseason Big 12 OL of The Year!? – and, generally speaking, most journalists have no idea what’s happening on the field beyond who is carrying the ball.
So let’s call it the All-Reputation Team – many warranted, some not – and wade in.
Offense
WR Dezmon Briscoe, Kansas
WR Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State
TE Jermaine Gresham, Oklahoma
In a conference completely dominated by the spread, the preseason All-Big 12 team is running the I. No one can argue with Dez, Dezmon or Gresham. Add a 3rd WR and ditch the RB and Jordan Shipley is your guy.
OL Russell Okung, Oklahoma State
OL Trent Williams, Oklahoma
C Chris Hall, Texas
OL Adam Ulatoski, Texas
OL Brandon Carter, Texas Tech
Once you get past the big names, hacks show the degree to which they’re reliant on everything but their own eyes in picking OL. And we’ve got three tackles, one guard/tackle, and a center. I have zero problem with Okung or Williams. Adam Ulatoski is a solid veteran and a good pass blocker and a mediocre run blocker. The 1st round NFL draft talk is odd -unless Ulatoski is about to give us a senior year no one could have predicted. Chris Hall is a recognizable name with a lot of career starts playing a position where the Big 12 doesn’t have many returning starters. Brandon Carter isn’t the best OL on his team (that’s probably Marlon Winn) and I’m not sure about his ability to transition outside where Tech needs him most.
QB Sam Bradford, Oklahoma
RB Kendall Hunter, Oklahoma State
RB DeMarco Murray, Oklahoma
Bradford is obviously defensible, but if a All-conference team is meant to be predictive rather than historical Colt McCoy is your guy. Kendall Hunter and DeMarco Murray are appropriate picks in a league ruled by running back by committee, but there’s no reason the All-Conference team needs two backs. I suppose you could make noises for Derrick Washington at Mizzou, but I’m not buying.
PK Alex Henery, Nebraska
KR Perrish Cox, Oklahoma State
Henery is the best returning guy on a percentage basis. Cox brought back two kickoffs for TDs last year. KSU’s Brandon Banks brought back one.
Defense
DL Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska
DL Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma
DL Jeremy Beal, Oklahoma
DL Sergio Kindle, Texas
Looks like a no-brainer to me. If you’d like some dark horses, look to KSU’s two DL: Fitgerald and Harold. I liked Tech’s McKinner Dixon before it was revealed that he can’t read and he hit the supplemental draft.
LB Sean Weatherspoon, Missouri
LB Joe Pawelek, Baylor
LB Travis Lewis, Oklahoma
Good group. Weatherspoon really won me over with his play in Missouri’s bowl game against Northwestern and his twitter feeds are good stuff. Pawelek is pure production and Travis Lewis is another proof of OU’s ability to coach and develop the LB position. Apologies to Rod Muckelroy.
DB Darrell Stuckey, Kansas
DB Jordan Lake, Baylor
DB Dominique Franks, Oklahoma
DB Earl Thomas, Texas
Love Darrell Stuckey. Jordan Lake isn’t one of the five best safeties in the league, much less one of the best two. He is a poster boy for journalists taking a coach’s word for it rather than watching play on the field. Earl Thomas will take a step towards greatness this year. Dominique Franks is a reasonable pick because he’s good and he has a full season’s body of work to draw on from last year, but I’m not sure there’s much room between him and our AJ Williams/Chykie Brown and CU’s Cha’pelle Brown/Jimmy Smith.
P Derek Epperson, Baylor
PR Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State
Epperson is a somewhat simple-minded choice. He has the highest returning individual punt average, but Baylor’s net punting yardage was third in the league last year. Who was number one? Texas. Hurrah for rugby kicks. Dez is a no-brainer as a punt returner.

My only critiques of the team were the 2 WR/2 RB alignment, which you so validly point out; having the Baylor safety ahead of numerous better players (ditto); and the inclusion of Chris Hall. To be fair, I have not run through other teams’ candidates at center, but I’d rank Chris third or even fourth among the Horns’ offensive linemen.
These things ALWAYS include too many seniors and two- and three-year returning starters. Think UT probably deserved about 4 spots (I’d have Hunter Lawrence as my PK); OU has too many picks (I’d replace Murray with a WR and either Franks or Beal).
Does Oklahoma State even have a second-team all-conference candidate on defense? And folks are ranking the Cowboys in the Top 10?

Chris Hall can play any position on the line. That’s important. It wouldn’t be for other players, but the reason Hall is rated so high, is because he can do it simultaneously.
I’m also very glad David Snow is relegated to being a back up, because of the two of them, Hall has bled more for the program, and that’s almost as important as the fact he can play multiple offensive line positions on any given snap.
Ulatoski is a nice offensive tackle, but the amount of national and conference kudos he earns is absurd.
Gerry Hamilton had man sex with Weatherspoon before Spoon’s senior year of high school. To this day little hearts flutter about Hamilton like some cartoon character any time he talks about Weatherspoon. As far as I’m concerned, the guy can’t graduate fast enough for that very reason, and I’m irrationally hoping for him to fall on his ass regarding an NFL career so I don’t have to hear any more about it.

Interested what you base this assertion on. He’s a very good athlete, which can overcome to some extent a lack of technique and coaching. When I watched him in the OU game, he did make tackles in space, which is as much about athletic ability as coaching, but he also got taken completely out of plays by the likes of Chris Hall on both of Ogbonnaya’s long runs.
So what would the guy who replaced Ryan Reynolds in that game be an example of? OU’s inability to coach and develop the LB position?
I think I would change wording from “coach and develop” to “recruit”. Wort is the next example of this.

Watching Stuckey take over the Missouri game last year left me feeling that he’s the top defensive talent in the conference. We could ask Gene Claude @ Atomic Teeth for his opinion on this one.
It’s actually hard for me to rank Kindle over Suh, as the latter played on a squad without talent (and was doubled most of the time). This season will offer better grounds for comparison–should be fun to watch.

But how hard was it to take over a Mizzou game last year? They got flattened by the few good teams they faced. We were up 35-0 at half.
As Scipio mentioned, this is predictive and not regressive.
IMO Kindle will be the most dominant defender in the league. And by dominant I mean HenryJames going undefeated in ultimate frisbee at the IF fields all six years in college.

The “Buck”, I would imagine my reference point for Colt would be the seasons other Texas quarterbacks, but I guess you know something I don’t when I typed the post.
Just to humor you and provide and example the 2005 team had 4 offensive linemen that either start, play, or are on NFL rosters, an NFL receiver and tight end, 2 running backs in the NFL, and a great talent (but major shithead) in Ramonce Taylor. I would find it hard to believe the even Bill Little himself could spin such a yarn that makes the offensive talent in 2008 anywhere near equal to the 2005 club.
Then again you might want him to so you wouldn’t have to explain how the fuck Texas ran for 161 yards against OU last year with a converted wide receiver at runningback.

The ass whipping in 2005? Well, the sun shines on a dog’s ass at some point. All you needed was the worst OU team since 1999.
2006? Paul Thompson is a GREAT guy, and he did a great thing for OU taking over the reins at QB on short notice. But he was the UT defensive MVP in that game.
2007? See 2005 but with the parties reversed.
2008? Reynolds was the symptom, not the disease. We had a RFr. at WLB, a converted safety at SLB, and a MLB with knees about as weak as Sergio Kindle’s alibi. Apparently, this is a good time to make sure that Reynolds’ backup is WHOLLY unprepared to do jack shit. Thanks, Brent.

Are you suggesting that 07 game was comparable to the whipping the sooners got in ‘05? Cause there’s no comparison. In ‘05 OU was run over by maybe one of the five greatest teams of all time. Texas had their way with OU all day that day. In ‘07 I actually thought Texas acquitted themselves quite well, despite being the less talented squad, and felt they were a Jamal Charles fumble away from taking that game.

Anyway, I believe Weatherspoon’s a bit overrated, although that’s only because he didn’t look all that great against Texas last year. And I don’t know who’d I’d replace him with, but nevertheless I don’t think that’s as clear a choice as Pawelek and Lewis.
