Golf Prick > Tennis Bum

Posted by srr50 on July 7th, 2009 under Uncategorized

While Roger Federer was winning a record 15th Grand Slam Tennis title at Wimbledon, Tiger Woods was winning his own golf tournament, the AT&T National. He was also getting slightly better TV ratings.

Woods continues to be a ratings goldmine for the PGA Tour. The 4.6 rating for Sunday’s final was 207% higher than last year’s final round when Tiger was out after knee surgery.

Federer’s five-set win over Andy Roddick pulled a 4.2 overnight rating, down slightly from last year’s Rafael Nadal-Federer Wimbledon final.

It marked the third PGA Tour victory of the year for Woods, who now has 68 overall in 245 starts on the tour, which translates into an amazing 27.75% winning percentage. Woods has now finished in the Top Ten in his last 18 starts in stroke play events. Phil Mickelson has 15 Top Ten finishes in his last 36 stroke play tournaments.

That duo once again is at the head of the Sports Illustrated’s Fortunate 50 list of the top-earning American athletes in salary, winnings, endorsements and appearance fees.

Tiger Woods earned over $99 million in 2008, while Phil Mickelson took home just under $53 million.

Woods didn’t crack the $100 million barrier for the first time in three years, but he hardly went home empty handed. His total of $99,700,00 was down since he spent the majority of last year off the course recovering from knee surgery, which not only denied him PGA winnings, but also millions in appearance fees at invitational tournaments.

The SI “Fortunate 50″ breaks down thusly: 22 NBA players, 14 Major League Baseball players, 9 NFL football players (Peyton Manning is the only football player to crack the Top Ten in earnings), three golfers and two NASCAR drivers.

Federer shows up at #9 on the SI International Athletes list with $29,562,000 in earnings last year.

  1. So I had brunch downtown on Sunday, and the Wimbledon final was playing on the tv at the bar. There were more than a handful of people watching it including two from my table.

I’m not sure what that means exactly except that 2nd St is like fucking Dallas.

And on that we can agree.

Been to the new Gingerman yet? They tried really hard, but I’m still pissed.

  6. Not yet, but we walked past the old one on Sunday.

  8. BTW- Chris Applewhite and I are starting X-Treme Sports Coverage (AGGRESSIVE WINGSUIT SKATING AAAGHHHHH!!!!) to balance out the golf takes as soon as we get around to it.

  9. HJ. They did their best and it’s not bad, tried to recreate the patio as best as possible. Just seems a little more douchy now and doesn’t have the flava of the old place.

Doesn’t that describe approx. 75% of Austin these days?

Roddick has earned our respect. He’s got 50% of Federer’s talent (if that), but managed to hang with the best player in the world for 77 games.

    Austin resident, too.

But his girlfriend is smoking and I hate him for it.

It must be the miserable dog days of the off-season if we’re talking about tennis, a sport that ceased to be relevant 20 years ago.

Just wait until our tour de france coverage kicks in. I drove to work today in yellow spandex biking shorts. The General has been known to drink a bottle of whisky, strip naked and hop on a unicycle. There really isn’t any sport we won’t get up for. And now that I know how much HenryJames hates golf, you can expect hole by hole coverage of the British Open. It’s that or some vietcong restaurant review in Hutto, take your pick.

Nice job Hiphop. Very nice to win what is probably the toughest game on the schedule handily, although the Hawks obviously caught UT at a good time.

The Morningstar FT was terrible and hilarious. He said the ball was wet, which clearly means Texas was cheating somehow. Would the second chance off balance leaner

I don’t think McCoy played anywhere near the level of Suh and the numbers make it clear that he did not. Suh had twice as many tackles (77-31), sacks (11-5) and nearly tackles for loss (22-14.5). Suh also broke up 10 passes, if he gets stonewalled on the rush he doesn’t allow it to take

EP, I get your point, but I don’t think the fact that Texas hasn’t won a tourney came as an underdog doesn’t support it. Teams are favored because they are better. The odds that they win are greater than those who are not favored. It’s not like Texas goes into games with a secret weapon

Good write up, hiphop. I love the versatitility of the Morris twins on defense. Xavier Henry is probably the key to a big run in the tournament. If he starts hitting open looks, the inside game will really open up. Post to post passing is fun to watch.

I don’t think it’s a case of RB not being able to coach, or doing a poor job of coaching. If you read the entirety of Katz’ blog post, he clearly sounds like a coaching searching for answers — answers that come in the form of players contributing, doing what they are coached to do.
