Texas Basketball Gets Commitment from Talented Wing DeAndre Daniels

Posted by Trips Right on July 2nd, 2009 under Basketball

And the beat goes on for Rick Barnes and company. Daniels is a 6-7 ultra long wing from Woodland Hills, CA. Scout has him ranked #38 in the nation, and he joins an already stellar 2011 class with the likes of PG Myck Kabongo, SG Sheldon McClellan, and Combo Guard Julien Lewis.

Daniels chose the Longhorns over Memphis, USC, and Washington among others. He gives the Horns length and athleticism on the baseline to go along with the 3 guards already in the fold. DeAndre has the size and frame to grow into a power forward, but he already has a small forward’s skillset with his ability to fill it up from deep and the quickness to blow by similar sized players.

Texas has already had tremendous success with face up 4’s in recent years. Boddicker, Atchley, and Damion James come to mind. These skilled big forwards make your offense dynamic and versatile because of their ability to take bigger defenders away from the bucket and punish undersized defenders down low and on the glass. But even if DeAndre doesn’t grow into a 4, he’s an elite take as a rim-rocking, praying mantis, sweet shooting 3. What’s not to like?

Now, time to get some back to the basket aircraft carriers.

A tip of the Scouting Report Hat to Gerry Hamilton at Scout.com. Gerry does a tremendous job with Texas Basketball and if you haven’t signed up, you need to if you want to keep up with all that’s happening with the Horns Hoops squad.

  1. Wow!!!Barnes deserves a raise.

  2. But is it amazing?

He is very impressive. On the other hand, when playing against air or being guarded by midgets, I, too, have been known to make some shots.

And, why can’t we ever get reliable measurements of a kid while he is in high school? In three places, I have seen Daniels described as being 6′6″, 6′7″ and 6′9″. By the time he gets to Texas, he will be 6′10″, but the NBA will finally measure him at 6′5-3/4″.

  4. It would be cool to see Daniels grow a few inches before he reaches campus. He looks like a take all the way.

I can believe he’s 6′9″ judging from the video. The kid has a hell of a reach as well. I can’t wait to see him in burnt orange!

Shawn Williams is the Jesus Christ of basketball. Trips = Pontius Pilate.

  9. Bitches ain’t shit but hoes and tricks

  10. Man goddamn. I ain’t never seen Shawn do none of this shit. The motherfucker can’t dribble the ball once, let alone two or three times in a row, he’s rail thin and probably needs to redshirt as a freshman because he looks like he’s been on a hunger strike in Somalia somewhere. I don’t know what Dave Telep was thinking when he said that Shawn was more talented than some of the McDonald’s kids. I have seen DeAndre Daniels do more against air than 5 of Shawn’s games with other people on the floor. Trips you spotted another gem with this kid.

  11. nice of the Washington Generals junior league team to help with the workout

We recruited him briefly, along with Louisville, Pitt and a host of others. Everyone ran when they realized he was a lunatic.

Pope was a real head case recruit, if I recall correctly.

Shot four times in high school too.

Transferred to the Hall from New Mexico St after all of the Big Schools gave him the cold shoulder for his recruiting antics.

Baylor scares me. They have no idea what the bright lights feel like.

Huggins also has a horrible history with high seeds from his days at Cincy.

    Bingo.

    Bingo.

Yet Gary Williams has a ring. Maybe this is Huggy’s year and maybe Scott Drew can get laid in a morgue. Love to see what Huggy could have

Good team that took number 1 seeded Louisville to the wire in last year’s tournament. Start 3 seniors and two juniors, very athletic. Solid pass first point guard. Their leading scorer was player of the year in the conference.

Good club that plays multiple defenses.

I just took Baylor going to the Elite 8. It’s a crazy mixed up world we live in.

Is it just me, or does it pain anyone else to not be able to determine who is going to beat Duke early? It’s bound to happen, but who will it be?

colorado ag, Utah State is as athletic as Nebraska. You’ll be fine as long as they don’t go 16 for 31 from three.

Siena, on the other hand, is going to beat you like you stole something. Maybe not, but the Saints should win.

Great article Scipio. Also, thanks for the dime.

Looking at the Tournament futures market, Vegas is telling us what they think about Onuaku’s health. The Orangemen have the easiest region and road to the fianl four, yet they’re +700 to win it all, while UK and Kansas, teams with much tougher roads, are +250

Possibly. However, I’m telling you – the beauty of these intergame lines is that when you see that all-too-familiar big early game lead that you know will evaporate down the stretch as soon as the team starts regressing to their 3 point shooting mean, there’s some money to be made.
