The National Championship on the Line Right Here

Posted by Huckleberry on June 24th, 2009 under Baseball, Football

This one’s for all the marbles. It all comes down to this. Winner takes all. To help tide us over until gametime and get through the workday, here are some videos of the runups and the final games of our athletic department’s last three chances to take home a national championship with one more win (I get to ignore the 2004 Fullerton series because we never got into that position):

And a couple of brackets with links to Gametracker pages for all the games in the baseball tournament so far:

College World Series only
Full Tournament

Few cities party like Omaha. I could tell you stories about wild times at the Zesto.

    Good luck to the Horns.

I still maintain that the 04 team was not just the best Texas team I’ve ever seen but was the best college baseball team I’ve ever seen. I know they lost to two remarkable pitching performances and so will never be considered one of the all time greats but I’d take that team over any other.

Even though Texas is the #1 seed I think LSU was/is as big a favorite over UT this year as UT was over Cal. St. in ‘04. We can only hope we get the kind of pitching performance tonight that Cal. St. got in their second game. ‘04 still hurts.

  4. 2005 was the best dogpile ever.

  5. I forget, who was the guy that jumped and completely missed the pile?

  7. Huck,

It was Stubbs heading full steam from Center Field.

I found a baseball stat Huck hasn’t posted yet.

    Most home runs in CWS:
    School Year HR
    LSU 1998 17
    USC 1998 17
    USC 1995 14
    Fresno State 2008 14
    Florida State 1999 13
Texas 2009 13 (with one game to play)

Another year… Another SEC team to go DOWN!

  12. I bet we have the record for solo home runs locked down.

  13. just think, if bcs ran this show we’d be gearing up for the big showdown tonight between lsu and cal state fullerton.

and when lsu cold-cocked csf, all the talk would be about the greatest ever.

  14. Work absolutely sucks today. This is horrible.

The burger at Zesto’s may be one of the best I’ve ever had. And the fresh-squeezed lemonade is a perfect complement for a flask of vodka.

What’s the O/U on how many time the capital one commercial will show tonight?

That’s the one. I’m going to step out and say 22… For official purposes, the count starts after the first pitch is thrown.

  22. Does that count Mahtook sightings?

There are two with the Visigoths (the one with the chickens in the bullpen and the one with the ball cut in half). Do both count?

  24. This explains Scipio’s temporary leave of absence.

  25. I hate Illinois Visigoths.

  26. Can I get a parlay on the Visigoths with the big titty bee and the little league world series video game?

Whatever the line, I’ll take the over on all three.

  27. Scip was the homo demon, right?

Either Visigoth commercial applies – ball in half or bullpen chickens.

This the most disappointing team because our talent level is higher than those others.

The DGib/Buckman team was the least talented, barely, after the injury to LaMarcus and Tucker’s suspension.

Last year’s team was the hardest to watch. Just watching AJ Abrams, who I don’t hate as much as most, run around like a

    Trips,

Great work all year long. Love the passion. The fact that you kept writing these (even around the birth of a child), is fantastic, shows your commitment, and is a little freaky. :-)

I think you showed great restraint in this post. It would have been easier to “go off” on Barnes.

Purdue holds on against Siena…I missed it in my bracket, but I’m actually happy for them.

Missouri pulling away from Clemson (68-60) with 7 to play…knew I should have never bet on Oliver Purnell, even if it was against this Missouri team.

Amazingly, game of the day so far might be Wisco/Wofford – 2

That, by the way, was the best thing that’s come out of this basketball season. Knowledge of Magnus’ intimate familiarity with the service and cut-off threshold at Hooter’s as compared to BWW3. Hooter’s — worse food at a higher price than a titty bar, served with jean shorts, cheaper beer, and more stretch
