Tidbit on Texas Basketball Scholarship Numbers

Posted by Trips Right on June 23rd, 2009 under Basketball, Recruiting

Rumors are swirling that Texas is going to get some scholarship relief in the form of a transfer. The information I got was that Harrison Smith would be transferring to a local mid major for immediate playing time, which would get Texas to the allowable scholarship limit with J’Covan Brown still tied up in the clearinghouse.

This would be huge news if true considering the other names and scenarios being tossed around, specifically the threat of a Varez Ward transfer. Ward remaining in the mix gives the Horns its most dynamic offensive player from last season’s squad, as well as a tough as nails perimeter defender. Plus Varez has skins on the wall, including a heroic effort against Duke when the Horns had zero playmakers on offense other than Ward. Big guards that can shoot and create off the bounce are gold, especially when they can turn around and guard other big guards and wings. Texas now has three of those types of players.

Stay tuned.

  1. Rivals says Smith is transferring to Stephen F. Austin, but I haven’t seen it confirmed anywhere.

Wish I shared your admiration for Varez. One game does not a star player make.

  3. BOOM MF

  4. RS, Varez was a true freshman and he’s likely a 4 year player. He’s a foundation kind of player.

  5. Wish I shared your admiration for Varez. One game does not a star player make.

Actually, it happened before. Royal Ivey’s freshman year. We got pasted by Duke in New York and Ivey was the only player to step up and get in the face of the Dukies. I think Barnes sees Ward cut in the Ivey mold of not backing down and getting the most out of his ability.

At the end of last season I would have easily taken Ward over Balbay.

  9. Ward is a keeper.

Gerry has a pretty kick ass interview with Todd Wright here ($), which leads me to believe they are looking to get Varez back.

    A couple of excerpts:

I would say that if I had to pick one player that has improved the most, it’s Varez Ward.

We are going to be very versatile on defense because of his ability.

  11. No word on the Clearinghouse. Is J’C on campus as some have said?

  12. It is a little sad that Harrison is transferring but it is good news from a team perspective. I wish him all the best.

Great news that Varez is the most improved player, wow! He has all the the good attributes of Mason (i.e. big heart, athleticism, size, excellent defender, good rebounder) plus confidence when he has the ball in both passing and shooting.

This is actually a great situation for Harrison. His senior year he’ll be able to log a lot playing time and have fun playing when the lights are on and the crowds are in the stands. He’s been a great teammate and a valuable member of the program. In fact he still will be both, as he will be able to come back to Austin next summer and graduate with a UT diploma. He’ll also obviously stay in touch with the program in the meantime. He’s not leaving the program, just taking a little sabbatical.

At least that was the plan at one time. I just read that Gerry thinks he’s sitting out next year and then playing, so maybe the plan changed. Oops.

Still changes nothing about his relationship to the program and how he’ll always have a home in Austin.

  16. OB is reporting that J’Covan may be in the J’house. Buzz coming from campus sources that he has cleared the clearinghouse. However, it’s not 100% confirmed yet.

If true, this team is sick sick sick with talent next year.

  17. The number of J’times we use the J’preposition based on J’Covan’s name will be worth the trouble on getting him on the court at the J’Erwin Center.

    J’Hook ‘em!

This is going to surprise some people, but some sites may have jumped the gun with their information regarding J’Covan Brown. J’Covan is not on campus. He has not made it through the clearinghouse. He may have stopped by, but he can’t participate in regular workouts or live in the dorms until he makes it through the clearinghouse, which hasn’t happened yet. I have heard he’s recently visited family in the Austin area, however.

Let’s continue to be patient on J’Covan’s situation. I still feel good about him getting through the clearinghouse, but it hasn’t happened yet.

  20. But… but… his dad told us he was in!

There’d be hell to pay if Myles Brand had to wait on a clearinghouse to get his TV money. Comical. It’s a transcript, not an rpongett treatise.

  22. Ketchum has no basketball sources whatsoever. It’s comedy to watch him give it the college try.

Yeah your right, penders teams were at least fun to watch play. Barnes offense is pretty bad not as bad as Tom’s but its all relative to who is watching the worst offense in Texas history.

“His teams did not play D, did not box out, and were generally unsound in the fundamentals of the game.”

Our hoops team is the basketball version of Major League.

    Jake Taylor = Damion James
    Pedro Cerrano = Dexter Pittman
Willie Mays Hays = Avery Bradley
    Roger Dorn = Justin Mason
Isuro Tanaka (Major League II) = Dogus Balbay
Rube Baker (Major Leauge II) = Jordan Hamilton

If Craig Way starts drinking whiskey during the broadcasts, it’ll complete the analogy.

Nice job Hiphop. Very nice to win what is probably the toughest game on the schedule handily, although the Hawks obviously caught UT at a good time.

The Morningstar FT was terrible and hilarious. He said the ball was wet, which clearly means Texas was cheating somehow. Would the second chance off balance leaner

I don’t think McCoy played anywhere near the level of Suh and the numbers make it clear that he did not. Suh had twice as many tackles (77-31), sacks (11-5) and nearly tackles for loss (22-14.5). Suh also broke up 10 passes, if he gets stonewalled on the rush he doesn’t allow it to take

EP, I get your point, but I don’t think the fact that Texas hasn’t won a tourney came as an underdog doesn’t support it. Teams are favored because they are better. The odds that they win are greater than those who are not favored. It’s not like Texas goes into games with a secret weapon

Good write up, hiphop. I love the versatitility of the Morris twins on defense. Xavier Henry is probably the key to a big run in the tournament. If he starts hitting open looks, the inside game will really open up. Post to post passing is fun to watch.

I don’t think it’s a case of RB not being able to coach, or doing a poor job of coaching. If you read the entirety of Katz’ blog post, he clearly sounds like a coaching searching for answers — answers that come in the form of players contributing, doing what they are coached to do.

Our RPI is bad, and we have no signature wins.

I don’t think we have to win the SEC tourny necessarily. If we make it to the SEC Tourny championship game and have won about 20 games, I would say a tourny bid would look likely. But that is a pretty big task. I know no one cares about the NIT, but that wouldnt be
