It looks like Brown is going to play this fall pending any surprise j’clearinghouse issues as he’s reportedly starting classes at Texas on June 9th according to a report from Fox News Houston.
You have to credit the young man for coming this far after facing a ton of adversity, which was sometimes a function of Brown’s temper. Still, he’s a passionate kid and a great ball player that will give the Longhorns a proven backcourt scorer if he can keep his emotions in check and make it about the team all the time.
Skills wise, J’Covan is an athletic guard that can create anywhere on the floor. Midrange pullups, catch and shoot, you name it. And what a shot it is. He might be the best pure shooter on this Texas team the day he steps on campus. The battles he and Avery Bradley will have should appear on Deadliest Warrior. I’m thinking William Wallace vs. Attila the Hun. Offensively, he’s a lot like Daniel Gibson, with perhaps more ability to create off the dribble. Defensively, he needs to learn to bring it, and I think Barnes is just what the doctor ordered for him here. Barnes is also the perfect tonic for what ails J’Covan between the ears. Brown needs a disciplinarian figure in his life if he’s going to right his emotional ship once and for all. He’s a PA kid through and through.
As for the numbers, Texas will need to find a way to make it work even if James stays in the draft. Word is DJ’s still 50/50, after putting on a second round performance in his individual workouts.
Still, either way, Brown coming aboard is great news for the Horns. His presence doesn’t just shore up the perimeter offensive weaknesses that plagued the team last season, it makes the Texas backcourt a team strength

Texas is going to win the hattrick this year. NCs in baseball, football, and basketball!

I think Barnes is just what the doctor ordered for J’Covan. It is tough to get out of PA, but I think that J’Covan will flourish at Texas.
I have met him a couple of times, and he seemed like a good kid. Based on that, I think the anger management will resolve itself with more discipline and the kind of support system Texas offers.
PA kids are tough. The summer pick up games will be interesting.
Who is losing minutes to J’Covan? Dogus, Ward, Mason or Lucas?
Even though this may be the most talented team Barnes has coached, it will take his best coaching job to get them where they ought to go next year.

We can mix and match people to death. You’re right, though, finding an identity will be a problem until the cream rises.

Ah yes. Port Arthur.

not sure here, but if the implication is that it’s somehow unfair to label PA kids as needing their emotional ships righted… then Janis is not the counterexample you’re looking for….

Trips, if he’s a great shooter above all, can you compare and contrast him to, say, Sydmill Harris (sans the number of languages spoken…)? Should he be “categorized” as instant offense above all else?

JB is 100 X better then SHarris, even in his sleep.
Not super athletic more like a little above average but he has a great handle left and right handed, great J out past 25 feet. He knows how to play the game a real player. Great awareness and IQ with other players, can make others better when he passes first.
May be a better shooter then Hamilton they are close. The one thing that makes him a great get is he is TOUGH when he gets a player in front of him, he will not be stopped, period. He does have rabbit ears ,the other teams players will throw JB off his game with trash talk, kid needs to keep his mouth shut and not get into a verbal battle with the other team. Bad things will happen if JB is thinking about the other team.
May have the skills to be a good PG this year but is more a shooter but he has PG skill set.
Still we will have a great group of PG’s, I am still high on Dog and his passing is a strong point, getting on the floor with Bradley and Hamilton,James will make Dog a 10 dimes per game.
Mason just went to the 13th slot on the bench his minutes will be cut in half if not more.
I wonder who is leaving if James comes back??

Speaking of Sydmill Harriss did you know his dad was on the golf team with Tom Kite and Frank Sinatra?

You guys should not allow yourselves to play Charlie Brown to the Lucy of J’Covan’s Dad.
I do think he’s going to get through the clearinghouse, but it’s not a given, and it’s certainly not a sure thing it will happen by the 9th of June.
J’Covan’s father has given so many updates which ended up not being correct, I’d hope some of you would have learned by now that he’s not as reliable a source as you’d think the father of a player would be.
Still, I’m hopeful.

Mila Kunis did a bathing suit scene once in PA. It’s in the movie “Moving McAllister.”

R.C. Buford and John Lucas. More specifically, their checkbooks.

Just to show you how unreliable J’Covan’s dad is, summer school classes start on the 4th not the 9th. I’m hoping and praying we get J’Covan as I think it would be great for him and us, but I’ll believe it when I hear it from UT/Barnes.

Nordberg, actually, I don’t think that’s going to be necessary. From what I understand, the Jai Lucas checkbook thingy was discussed as a potential option, but it won’t have to be utilized.

“…does that mean James is gone or RC will offer (sorry couldn’t resist)?”
Something else entirely, that I can’t even give you a clue on without giving it away — but like pornography, you’ll know it when you see it.
Of course, I’ve felt all along James was going to stay in the draft — not based on inside information, but just the dynamic of the situation. All things being equal, I’m sure Trips is correct that the kid had intentions of staying at one point, but I just didn’t see it panning out for a variety of reasons.
He still might stick around — in which case the numbers would still work, even with J’Covan Brown making it in. But I think some team is going to give him the assurance he’s looking for — even if they’re not bound by it — and he’ll keep his name in the draft.
I’d love to see him return. I really like him as a person, with all he’s overcome, how hard he works, and how loyal a person he is. And it doesn’t hurt if he’s a terrific basketball player, even if he never developed the ability to handle the ball the way I thought he might. There’s no one on this team who — like Gerry Hamilton says — rebounds outside of his space the way James does, and that’s going to be missed above all else.
I also am still not going to count on J’Covan Brown suiting up for this team even if he makes it past the clearinghouse. I’m rooting for this kid like no other, but in his own way he has obstacles of the same immensity that Dexter Pittman had when he arrived on campus. It’s just that Pittman’s immense issues were literal, whereas Brown’s are all mental.
I do know this. I don’t think there’s a place in the country better suited for preparing J’Covan Brown for the rest of his life than the Texas basketball program. I don’t know if it will work out, but if it doesn’t, it wasn’t going to work out anywhere.
