Wow.

Now, first things first. I like Augie Garrido, I really do. I obviously disagree with his offensive strategy and tactics fairly frequently. But what he did to Austin Wood tonight should be criminal. Absolutely inexcusable to throw a young arm for somewhere in the neighborhood of 170 pitches.

There are also beefs with the offensive strategy (how many fruitless bunt attempts does it take to try something new?), but that is the biggest issue coming out of today’s game.

You gotta feel for those BC guys. I can’t imagine how they’ll win tomorrow’s game.

Hell, I can’t imagine how they’ll be able to play tomorrow’s game.

  2. You should put “Wood,” “stamina” and “endurance” in your Tags list. It would bring in an interesting blogger crowd.

Back to the game. Agree about risking the health of Wood’s arm. I know he’s young, but that can’t be good???

  3. In terms of decision-making: how about pinch hitting for Kevin Keyes early when Keyes was 2 for 3 with a HR and a double?

I agree on Wood. On one level, I was absolutely in awe of his performance. On another level, I cringed at every pitch past 100. He threw 30 pitches a day earlier, BTW. 199 pitches in two days is not taking care of your kid.

Happy for the win. Seven hours of baseball. Damn.

  4. Yeah, the Keyes thing made me shake my head at the time, but it’s hard to say at this point how bad that decision was on its own merit.

Obviously the fact that the game lasted 25 innings made the decision a terrible one, but you can’t consider that kind of thing at the time. Either way, I disagreed with it when it happened.

  5. I can’t beleive we still have the luxury of Jungmann and Workman tomorrow. Hopefully, we just finish whoever off in the first game tomorrow and get everyone rested for next weekend.

I want to bitch slap Augie for what he did to that kid tonight. Fuck him and his Chicano bravado bullshit. You don’t take “I feel OK” to mean it’s alright to let a 20 year old kid throw 200 pitches in 2 days.

  8. regardless of the criminal activity against wood, that game was epic. i can’t imagine either of the teams playing tomorrow after that.

Austin told the coaches he wasn’t leaving the game. He’s got a rubber arm and some people just don’t hold to the normal constraints of pitch counts (i.e. Tim Lincecum, Burt Hooten threw 13 innings of 1 hit ball years ago). His 3/4 sidearm motion doesn’t put the same type of strain on his shoulder as normal pitchers and to go along with that he’s just an advanced specimen. The decision was Austin’s and he said his arm felt fine afterward. Wood earned legendary status with the performance tonight in an absolute must win game.

Shoeless Joe Cockshuck once threw both ends of a double header, worked long relief the next day, and played right field for the last 3 innings nailing a couple of dudes at the plate from the fowl pole. Pitch count schmitch count.

  11. I agree with DEvil’s Advocate:

The kid is 22. He knows his limits as he’s been pitching since he was 9. I’ve played with him on a select league back in Humble and against him in HS baseball…the kid has a rubber arm. The term means that he doesnt use normal mechanics to create velocity, but rather to “sling shot” the ball using leverage of his body weight.

Of course this is “looked down upon” by the heigher ups in baseball, particularily in the pros as correct mechanics will rule the day in their eyes. His way of throwing isn’t great for long term success, but it will get him where he needs to be for the majors. He’s a closer and no one after this season will pitch him this way again. He’s going to need surgery by the time his career is over, but due only to his mechanics, not his high pitch count in one game.

FYI, Lincecum is not a Rubber Arm. He has unbelieveable mechanics in his pitching. ALL of his velocity comes from his waist down, and not his arm. Thats why he is a starter in the bigs. J Brent Coxx was a rubber arm as well, Huston Street is one to an extent. Most closers in NCAA do this.

Do you guys think Augie puts too much pressure on these kids with his business like approach? Stranding 24 runners for the game and hitting 2-of-21 with runners in scoring position sounds like a tight team.

I’m not saying you need a big dog pile after winning the Big 12 tourney, but let the kids have some fun.

My 2 cents from my sofa.

Kreiss is right about Devil’s Advocate being right.

I’ve been critical all season about how Wood has been used. I think he’s come into way too many games way too soon. And I was surprised to see him as the first man in last night after his outing the night before.

But last night was beyond belief. Wood came back for his senior season precisely for moments like last night. Who among us would shy away from it?

Should the coaches have pulled the plug? Debatable, but as long as he was mowing them down the way he was, who doesn’t ride a hot pitcher as far as he will carry you?

Now … if Wood comes within 50 yards of the mound the rest of this tournament, we’ll talk.

I can’t imagine that Wood was physically prepared to throw that many pitches. When he was cramping up after 10 or so, which is about three innings more than I thought made sense, that should have been a signal to quit.

The BC coach probably deserves the same sort of criticism for what he did with his guy.

I hated that stuff when Gus did it, when Wayne Graham did it, and last night. But those guys make their living on winning games, not how many healthy kids they put into pro ball.

Garrido’s offensive style was state-of-the-art back in the 1911, when Home Run Baker led the AL with an incredible 11 home runs in 659 AB.

In the post-dead-ball era, however, endless sacrifice bunts and other small-ball strategies just don’t make good mathematical sense.

Btw, is Austin Wood UT’s leading pro prospect? Despite his brilliance, I wonder if last night’s performance actually hurt his draft position – some teams have to be terrified of 200 pitches in 2 days. If what Garrido did to Wood is not criminal, it may at least be a tort.

  23. Groundhog Day said:

Amazing performance by Wood. 12 and 1/3 innings of no hit ball in relief.

What an incredible 24 hours of sports as the king of Clay (Rafa) is handed his first ever defeat at Roland Garros to Sweden’s Robin Soderling 6-2 6-7(2-7) 6-4 7-6(7-2). In fact this is the first time he has dropped a set in 2 years.

This is why we watch sports. Kudos to Wood and Soderling. Incredible performances.

  24. Exactly, Groundhog. The first thing I thought was “What an amazing performance by a UT pitcher”. Then that was immediately followed with “and some foreign dude in tennis did something amazing against another foreign dude in France today”. Those two things go together like ethics and Oklahoma.

  25. Kenny Powers could throw 170 pitches with his scrotum.

  26. Baseball is a stat freak’s wet dream. So many variables and so many records. Excuse me while I rub on the ole rosin bag.

There’s already a few we know about and were mentioned on air.

    - Longest game in college history (25 innings)
    - Most at bats by one player in one game (12)

I don’t know if these are records, but…

    - most strikeouts by one player in one game (6)
    - most strike outs by two teams in one game (42, 20 by UT and 22 by BC)
    - fewest pitchers used in any game over 20 innings? Texas (3)
    - most innings pitched by one pitcher in one game (13 by Wood)
    - most consecutive hitless innings in one game by one pitcher. Wood (12 1/3 innings)

FYI, as a team UT batted .220 with 91 ABs. If you take out Rowe, Keyes and Clark’s ABs and hits (9 of 24), the team’s average for 67 ABs is .164

    Here’s the stat sheet.

  27. One more mind blowing stat.

Texas “hitters” had 20 hits and 5 walks with 91 ABs. And I believe one HBP. That’s 26 runners on base. They stranded 24. Torres gets the honor of leaving 10 of those on base.

  30. What Wood did yesterday defies description. It was one of the greatest pitching performances at any level, ever. That being said, Augie should have to answer for allowing Wood to throw nearly 200 pitches in two days.

It’s not like Texas didn’t have other pitching options. A parent allows a kid to come to UT and play baseball partly because of the winning tradition, of the school, and Augie Garrido. However, winning at all costs, and allowing any UT pitcher to stay in for 170 pitches, no matter the stakes, is unacceptable.

UT fans have been quick in the past to jump on Bob Stoops for playing injured zero-u players. Hopefully, Augie will come under the microscope for allowing a pitcher to throw 170 pitches, and risk serious injury. That’s just not the right thing to do.

What’s true in the aggregate is not always true in the specific. As a general rule, that is too many pitches. For Wood, it might not be. It is done – why not wait until something negative comes from it before condemning Augie? Maybe Wood is an ultra-competitive guy who doesn’t know when it’s smart to quit, but maybe he’s a guy who Augie trusts to have an objective opinion of his situation.

If it were my kid, I’d be concerned, but first I’d listen to my kid. If he insisted on staying in, and he felt fine afterward, I wouldn’t scream too loudly (though I’d watch things closely).

As a pitcher, I knew better than the coach when I was done.

One of the things that always pissed me off when pitching is when some coach or trainer tried to tell me what my body was doing. It is my body, I think that I can make decisions for myself.

And for all of you yellow cowards out there balking at Wood’s performance last night, you are probably the reasons that there aren’t as many legends made anymore. Every time somebody does something great, instead of being amazed, all you can do is gripe.

And I think for those of us who have followed the team all year, we know that the offense has been a liability—all year. But if you look at NCAA programs, Texas is not only the winningest program (by winning percentage), but they are also the most consistent. And they do it with great pitching, great defense, and less than amazing offensive numbers. And not to mention Garrido has more wins than any other NCAA coach—ever.

Of course, Texas and Garrido’s success may be your problems. That is probably the issue. The most successful Division 1 coach and program and you are dogging it. You are not Texas fans, so you will find anything you can on us.

Whatever your motives are, when yall win as many games as Garrido, or as many national championships, then you can spout your expertise on the game. Until then, your opinions as useless as spitting into the wind.

  34. Damn, you got me. I’m not a Texas fan.

    Busted.

Ya Huckleberry. And, if you are honest, I will bet you haven’t ever pitched on the collegiate level.

  36. That’s correct. So? (And why would I be dishonest about it?)

  37. I know nothing about baseball, but I do want to know why a tennis player needs a nickname that’s virtually the same as his actual name – “Rafa” vs “Rafael”? That’s like “Sergi” vs “Sergio” in golf, or “LeBro” vs “LeBron” in hoops. Tennis weird.

Now, back to pitch counts …

    1. Bill James has done nothing at any level of baseball. Yet he’s essentially a living god among modern GM’s. Theo Epstein hasn’t either, and he’s got two world series rings.

    2. Billy Beane, was assigned AHEAD of Darryl Strawberry coming out of the Rookie Draft by the Mets. Pretty much everybody’s all american. The guy would laugh in the face of your comments. There is not a pitcher alive that wants to come out of a game, witness Pedro Martinez in 2003 ALCS. It’s not the manager who let’s a guy stay in, it’s the one that says: We need you tomorrow, hit the showers, that shows true depth of character and balls.

    3. Austin Wood’s effort is truly an amazing event, something that will live on for many, many years. The question is existential, but real: If he’s selling houses in Westlake in five years cause his rotator cuff is non existent, was it worth it? Is glory now, in the moment, worth whatever you’ve sacrificed in the future?

    CTJ,

I detect a hint of sarcasm in your post. What Wood did yesterday was nothing short of legendary and if you followed the sport of tennis at all you would realize what happened at the French was also legendary. Both efforts were superhuman so in that way I think they are related. I guess you can mock me for posting tennis info on a longhorn site but I was swept up in the moment. I will not make that mistake again….apologies all around.

I don’t think it’s a case of RB not being able to coach, or doing a poor job of coaching. If you read the entirety of Katz’ blog post, he clearly sounds like a coaching searching for answers — answers that come in the form of players contributing, doing what they are coached to do.
