Recruiting Roundup

Posted by Scipio Tex on May 29th, 2009 under Football, Recruiting

You know by now that Texas received it’s first blow of the recruiting season when Ahmad Dixon declared for Baylor. Losing an elite recruit to Baylor is like having Pat Boone pick your pocket. Dixon was one of our best five recruits and will serve as the bellcow of Baylor’s class. I don’t think this one is necessarily over, but if it is, Dixon must take heed of the Mack Brown recruiting curse.

How we deal with this one will tell me a bit about Muschamp’s impact on our philosophy. Urban Meyer would shrug and recommit himself to recruiting the prospect, chuckling at the great game that is swaying the suggestible minds of 17 year olds. As for Texas, we’ve had the tendency to act like an aggrieved wife who found out about an affair. Not even a clever French wife, who would use the affair as leverage to make the husband buy her a new wardrobe and take her to Cannes, but a mean-spirited American wife who takes all of your stuff and refuses to talk to you.

A lot of people have speculated about the angles Baylor played to pull this off and I think it’s pretty clear that it was a combination of depth chart angst, classroom worries, and access to Dixon via the defensive coordinator’s son, Levi Norwood. I also wonder if Akina showed him sufficient love after getting his pledge. Baylor played pretty effectively upon the notion that he’s a Day 1 starter in Waco who will be given small classes, individual attention, and “an academic plan” and Jason Smith’s draft status proves that the NFL will find talent wherever it is. This is all easily combatted, but the question is whether we even care to do so.

Folks who are saying “Forget Dixon if he’s scared to compete” are missing the boat. First, many high school players have no idea how good they actually are – see Connor Wood. We run a base nickel now and our coaches would like to do it with three safeties. There’s plenty of opportunity. Second, his fear of competition may not be on the football field, but in the classroom. It’s worth our time to fight this one out.

***

Camp season is upon us. Remember when we used to pledge recruits during summer camps and that was considered trailblazing strange behavior, roundly mocked by RC Slocum and Tim Cassidy?

As in (chuckling softly): “Texas will find that’s not the way we do things around here.”

Now our camps are an opportunity for an entire committed class to hang out with each other. There are still some important kids on the radar, and they are as follows:

Lache Seastrunk You can hope in one hand and shit in the other and see which fills up first. That written, Lache is coming in on June 7th and as long as we’re in the conversation we may be able to make our move if a remora can be scraped off on the coral.

Jackson Jeffcoat He plays it close to the vest, but he’s a Mack Brown type of kid. Nabbing him would assure us of the best DL class in recent memory. I like our chances.

Darius White It looks like a Texas-OU battle, but as often happens when two rivals battle for a recruit they end up shitting each other’s beds such that a last second compromise school can swoop in and make a play. In this instance, I think that’s USC. When a guy is a huge lean to one school early, sways a bit and gets excited by the attention being paid to him, and then recalibrates once some time passes, 75% of the time they end up back with their original. Assuming no funny business.

Jake Matthews He’s going to A&M or Texas. The fact that A&M is even a factor tells you the degree to which scheme is influencing his choice. The fact that a kid who could care less about the recruiting limelight is still puzzling this out tells me that he’s torn and likely trying to find a way to please those he looks up to and find personal reasons for hope in College Station. Psychologically, I think this is A&M’s deal to seal.

Trovon Reed Allegedly, he may try to attend camp with Lache Seastrunk. I’ll believe it when I see it. If this went down and Texas favorably impressed him, I wouldn’t be shocked to see a transfer to a Texas high school to get him out of LSU’s influence. Anything can happen, but I wouldn’t pin many hopes here.

Jordan Hicks Same deal here. If he gets here, we’ve got a good chance. If nothing happens by say, late September, we’ll move on. Muschamp has a personal interest in this recruitment and after viewing his highlights it’s pretty clear why. The guy is an animal – a Derrick Johnson type talent. I actually prefer him to Nelson.

Corey Nelson His leader changes on a weekly basis, but he’s tripping to Texas for camp and that’s a good thing. If he gets around all of the other defensive recruits and gets a sense that everyone who is everyone is coming to Texas, that’s a pretty powerful influencer. He’ll play out his recruitment for a while and that’s not something we’ve always had patience with.

Another DB? Yeah, maybe. According to Scout, we’re probably going to take another look at speedster Trey Franks and may reopen recruitment of CB Tyler Stephenson. Rashad Favors may be a possibility, but I question his ability to play safety at the college level – he’s an undersized LB, probably. Do we really need another when we’re running a base nickel?

BON also takes a look at the horizon.

  1. It’s clear Jake likes Texas and just as clear that it’s probably not going to happen. Shame for him, but we need to move on. I don’t get condemning the kid to 4 years of mediocrity, but that’s just my opinion.

  2. I’m in agreement.

Camps are now an opportunity for us to offer people that we could probably offer in December and still land. Camp Fever! Catch it!

Schemes are a lousy reason to pick TAMU. The kid starts college in 2010. There is no telling who the coach will be or what scheme he runs.

I am confused about the scheme comments. Is the issue that the schemes Texas’ currently uses won’t have Jake prepared for the NFL?

If that is the case how did Blaylock make all those starts for Atl? How did Sendlein start all season for a team that played in the Super Bowl?

Aside from Scott which recent offensive linemen who has entered the NFL struggled? Studdard was a late round pick for the Texans (I believe Sherman was on the staff that took him) and Gibbs is not the kind that keeps dead weight around. Hills backed up last year and Larry Zeurlein isn’t exactly a jolly old man in his own right.

  6. I think Sherman’s NFL experience in combination with the offense they run is what Bruce likes so much. If it were me, I think I’d deal with the distance factor and send him to USC. Jake is going to be lucky to play in a Holiday or Cotton bowl. That’s not something I would willingly send him to in the name of being as NFL ready as possible.

Scott “struggled” in that he broke his leg as a rookie starter for the Lions. He’s trying to come back.

  8. We were a 80% zone read team with Vince and those guys you mentioned. The OL fire out and move forward at the snap, except a pulling lineman. When we lined up in the I with Benson as a senior, we were a straight up power downhill running team.

We’re a 80% zone team now. (Not zone read – zone) Our OL’s first step is lateral. It’s not that NFL teams don’t run it – they do – it’s just that we’re kind of shitty at it. Bad timing, back aren’t synced up to the OL, lack of rhythm etc.

Sherman has a more traditional NFL mindset and – rightly or wrongly – Bruce thinks that’s better for Jake’s long term development. Even if means playing on a bunch of 5-7 teams.

I won’t claim to watch a great deal of the NFL so which year did Scott break his leg? He is only listed as playing in 20 games in his two years in Detroit. No arguing, just curious.

As far as the Ags offense, they looked to be running the spread a great deal of the time last year.

One other factor in the Matthews recruitment is that Ray Childress has been hanging out on the Matthews’ couch a lot lately, now that the Clobber Line has been cut.

He gets a lot of time to sneak in plugs for the Ags in between eating Lucky Charms and watching his stories.

    Scipio,

You should hang out on the orangebloods website where every homer will tell you that the program is bigger than any one person. Hogwash! Dixon is a player and his loss hurts. Can you imagine where this program would be if the fanbase took that attitude with Vince Young? Do you think we would have won another NC had Adrian Peterson chosen Texas?

The loss hurts and if we lose Darius White to OU that will hurt even more. I would love to have Lache but if we don’t land him there are 3 studs next year to choose from. I’m in the camp that says we land Jeffcoat, but I have no idea what Nelson or Hicks will do.

What bothers me is that we always seem to bring a knife to a gunfight when its really time to get in the trenches and close on the super blues. Yet our fanbase finds this acceptable. There is a reason we have one CC in the 10 years of the MB era.

One question I do have is what kind of recruiter is Muschamp? Nothing has been documented as of yet.

    Pay the man…

Recruits like Darius and Lache (I’m tired of this waiting for next year bullshit) are the ones that make and break schools. Those guys don’t come around every year. This class has the potential to be the BEST of all time. Why settle for being better than average or even great when you can be the best? Complacency kills…

  15. Jake Matthews having a problem with our scheme is baloney perpetrated by aggy. The Texans even run a similar zone blocking scheme. Here’s what Mike Sherman’s brilliant scheme got them last year:

    114th in rushing offense
    115th in sacks allowed

    Here’s why I believe A&M leads.

    1. Bruce’s boss is legendary aggy QB Kubiak.
    2. Bruce owns a house in College Station, I doubt this is the time he wants to sell.
    3. Bruce and the family probably have the wrong idea of Austin and UT that it’s partying all the time blah blah, which isn’t the type of kid Jake is.

That said, if he waits until the Fall and aggy inevitably lags an Arky State type egg again on the way to another abysmal season…watch out for us.

  16. BatesHorn said:

If I had to guess, I’d say Bob is on to something. The Matthews thing has a bit of the smell of old school Aggie homerism that used to cause us to lose at least one top flight recruit to A&M a season in a WTF? fashion (see McGee, Stephen). Its become increasingly rare these days as teh suck in college station has gotten so large, but there are still those that think that all kids do in Austin is mounds of coke, BJ’s from pneumatic blonds, and partying all the time. So they go get a moral upbringing in college station. Or fuck goats, whatever. Some families just have a hard on for Aggie, and I think that some of that is at work here.

  17. Getting worked up over the loss of a single recruit is a display of serious faggotry. Where I disagreed greatly with the homers from orangebloods (echeese) is when they claimed not landing Bomar, Perriloux, et al was not going to matter because we would just get the next guy. That obviously did not happen and we were dangerously close to turning into Aggy if McCoy had not been lighting in a bottle.

Losing a single safety (have we really lost him yet?) when we are standing neck deep in future NFL players in the secondary is probably not something to lose sleep over. It sucks, no doubt but we need Lache 135,678 times more than we need Dixon.

  18. Groundhog Day said:

    May 30th, 2009 at 11:06 am

Agreed on the premise of Dixon, Newy. Because we are stacked at safety with Scott and Thomas, but to hear certain people speak it doesn’t matter if certain players decide to go elsewhere….We’re Texas! I happen to think that Seastrunk, White, and Jeffcoat are all must gets. Our inability to close on the superblues in this state might be a reason we haven’t won more CC and to point this out is not faggotry as you like to claim.

Should we go down the list of top 5 in the state who have starred elsewhere?

    Ty Warren
    Tommie Harris
    Ben Wilkerson
    Joseph Addai
    Jarvis Moss
    Adrian Peterson
    Martellus Bennett
    Malcolm Kelly
    Matt Stafford
    Terrance Tolliver
    Ryan Mallett

Now sure we missed on some top 5 guys that didn’t make the impact some envisioned like:

    Sapp
    Randall
    Jorrie Adams
    Justin Warren
    Youngblood
    Kelson
    Bomar
    Reid

But more often than not the cream of the crop at the top….the super blues make a big difference between championships and 10 win seasons. It’s no accident that the VY class had 4 of the top 5 in the state play at Texas.

It’s hard to argue the facts and the fact that we can’t close on the superblues is a tad disappointing. In 2008 we landed one (Aaron Williams) who might go down as one of the best to ever play at Texas before he is through and I would not have liked to see him go to Baylor. It remains to be seen how the other four(Calhoun, Washington, Aghayere, Good) will fare but only time will tell. Last year we did a lot better with 3 of the top 5 which is great and time will tell on the two who were heavy leans who ended up elsewhere.

And you make a great point about McCoy. No telling where this program would be without the 3 star from Tuscola. If he had not panned out the howling of missing out on top 5 talent would be deafening.

  19. I think we land more in state blue chip prospects recently than some Internet bloggers would lead you to believe. Gilbert, Walters, Okafor from last year and several others already in 2010. The key is landing the right number of prospects at key positions and having superior depth on the lines. You need one blue chip QB every year and enough D-line depth to go 2-deep against the upper echelon teams in the conference for instance. The loss of Darius White (which is unlikely) to USC would not be devastating or even as serious as some might think. The inability to land the Okafor’s, Kindle’s, Jeffcoat’s and Wilson’s of the world would be far more devastating.

Everyone has a few good to great receivers in this conference. Ditto for a starting QB/RB. Few teams have the line depth on both sides Texas has and that has everything to do with recruiting. Those battles have to be won more often than not against the Oklahoma’s of the world.

  20. Perhaps the past 3 years wouldn’t have gone as well (not that ‘06 and ‘07 were banner years) but I think that if you were to remove Colt from the program we would not be in complete shambles. Instead Snead would have had to step in as a true frosh and I’m sure there would have been bumps and bruises along the way but I think that last year at Ole Miss he proved himself to be a very capable player.

Basically I’m just saying there’s no way we woulda been Aggie bad.

  21. Groundhog Day said:

    May 30th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

There is no doubt that football games are won in the trenches and having strong lines on both sides of the ball is a must. Ohio State Proved this against Miami. As a side thats what really concerns about our team this year is a lack of any sort of talent at DT could keep this team from achieving its goals.

I took note of our last recruiting class when we landed 3 of the top 5 players in the state. Right now we have 1 committed of the top 5 and hopefully we close with Jeffcoat, Seastrunk, and White. White is a big loss if we lose him to OU.

I’m a Dad with an athletic child. Can’t imagine Bruce Matthews’ calculus at this point, but more power to him.

  23. I had hoped the remora was just a rumor.

  24. Great analysis, Scip. You nailed it on the top recruiting targets, what they can bring and what the chances of landing them are. A few thoughts:

Jake Matthews is in a tough spot. Dad, for whatever reason, doesn’t care for UT. Brother is at A&M. USC is a long way off and Jake has limited loyalty there. He’d probably love to wear orange, but he’s creating a family civil war on two fronts to do so. How’d you like to be in his shoes? I can sympathize. I can also hope . . .

We can live without Dixon. He can’t hurt us at Baylor. He’d probably be a two-year impact guy at UT (assuming no redshirt in 2010) at most. Lotsa time to make up for this loss.

I don’t think Mack & Staff “lay down” late in recruiting. I think what they do is get there first, make their pitch and get a lot of early yesses. They fire early and don’t have anything new to offer (legally speaking) as the later offers roll in. Failing to close late bothers me, as it does all of us, but the early closing has resulted in a lot more wins than losses.

I refuse to get too high when Okafor or Eddie Jones sign, too low when Dixon or Perilloux don’t. Did you know who Orakpo was when he committed/signed? Did you rejoice when Tray Allen joined the fold? Did you know what Tuscola was four years ago?

  25. Classroom angst? At UT? Seriously? UT’s reputation is that it’s a cakewalk degree. Go to class, don’t go to class, whatever. Doesn’t matter. Small schools are different.

I went to Baylor, and I can tell you the smaller class sizes don’t breed special care and attention. You keep up or you fail. You sleep in: you fail. You slack off: you fail. You miss too many class days: you don’t deserve to earn the credit… you fail.

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of UT having difficult classes. Graduate level, OK. Undergrad? Really? Just get the book, read some reviews, pass the test and move on.

By the way, my ideas of classes and degree plans at UT are based on what UT alums have told me. One told me she hadn’t studied since her senior year in high school.

So, get real. Yes UT ranks well with US News and World Report based on endowment and the top 10% rule, which is going to be eliminated anyways. Great school, but let’s be realistic. Going to a private school instead of a public school because it’s easier is unfounded and unintelligent. Only whorn and aggy t-shirt fans actually believe this. No one else does.
