I wasn’t paying attention to the defensive line so somehow I failed to notice Mack’s current leaning towards Sam Acho as your starting 3-tech in 2010. The non-call on the lob was decent IMHO, they both were guilty of fouling. Will be interesting to see how soon Howard fouls out in OT.

Trips,
I agree. The state of officiating in the NBA is only rivaled by the football officiating in the BIG 12. The only thing that gives NBA officiating the edge is the fact that they blatently skewing the calls to certain individuals (Lebron,Kobe,Wade.) Those three are acutely aware that all they have to do to get to the line is jump into someone and they will get a bailout call.
hiphopopotamus said:

I’m with the commenters here…the call for LeBron was ridiculous at best, but if they’d called Varejao on that last play, I might have been forced to boycott the league until a change was made.
Rhymenocerous said:
May 27th, 2009 at 6:55 am
Come on people… There have been much worse calls (and non calls) in the playoffs than the 0.5 seconds blocking foul. LeBron drove and the guy impeded his progress while moving enough for LeBron to sell a trip.
On the other side, Howard and Varejao were competing for a loose ball where neither really had position… And Varejao ended up in a jiujitsu headlock takedown.
Steve Nebraska said:
May 27th, 2009 at 7:14 am
I’m sorry, but that’s just not a call you can make with .5 seconds left, in the playoffs, on the road. A foul is contact that creates an advantage, in a nutshell. Lebron initiated the contact. A defensive player doesn’t have to be completely stationary to avoid a blocking foul. How did Pietrus create a disadvantage for Lebron there?
Kafka said:
May 27th, 2009 at 9:19 am
In the playoffs, the road should not have anything to do with it (it is the playoffs).
The call for Labron was ridiculous. A complete bailout.
Howard should have gotten the call, especially when you consider the call for Labron a few seconds earlier. Basically he was ridden out of bounds.
Stern is a corrupt guy who only thinks of how to improve the ratings. He is desperate to get Labron matched up against Koby in the finals.
BTW, this 7 technical foul limit in the playoffs is more bs. If you want to increase technicals, then make the fine a % of salary (enough so that it hurts) but don’t increase the ability of these corrupt refs to influence the outcome of these games even more.
The General said:

Saying that the NBA is rigged, would imply a level competence that I see no evidence of.
But, the powers that be seem to schedule crowd swayable refs in home games that The League needs a certain winner.

The von Erich’s were DQ’d because while Freebird Michael Hayes had Kevin in an illegal choke, Brian Adias stormed into the ring and unintentionally struck Bronco Lubich with a folding chair. Very similar to the LA – Houston series.

Most NBA fans think that stars get preferential treatment, i.e. the star call. Certainly the home team gets better calls during the regular season. Don’t these very prevalent examples of officiating misconduct indicate that NBA officiating is systematically biased?

there’s a strange, sick part of me that kind of hopes the Cleveland LeBrons get through and play the L.A. Kobes… The only reason is that I just want to see what happens in a big game if LeBron runs into Kobe – what will the officials do? I don’t think even they know, I can just see Joey Crawford’s head explode from the sheer cognitive dissonance of not being able to call a big-moment foul on either of them… it’ll be the NBA equivalent of an irresistible force vs. an immovable object.
