Sooner Forward Juan Patillo Dismissed

Posted by Trips Right on May 19th, 2009 under Basketball

For violating team rules. Speculation on the interwebs is that the violation is related to academics which in sooner speak means Patillo pimp slapped a professor or shanked an academic counselor.

Any loss of depth at forward sucks for Tiny Gallon. The portly freshman will now be forced into playing iron man basketball. In other words, he’ll have to get back on defense for particularly important possesions of ballgames.

It sucks when Ryan Wright is the only other competent forward returning for your team next season. I’m heart broken for Keith Gallon, Sooner nation, and the coloring book in which Juan Patillo failed to stay within the lines.

So, here’s your trail of tears starting five:

PG Tommy Mason-Griffin
SG Willie Warren
C Tiny Gallon
PF Ryan Wright
SF Tony Crocker

Ouch. Not much defensive firepower or rebounding ability out of that bunch. They’ll have to shoot the ball really well to win ballgames against the better teams in conference. There’s a solid chance Capel takes a mid level ACC gig after next season’s struggles.

  1. I’d say that is a good thing for Tiny, and not as good for OU. He has to get in better shape, and has to get back on D. If they had other options he could whine and not learn to get back. Good for UT this year, bad for them in later years.

    Just my .02

    hook’em

  2. So Trips, what’s your current Big XII power ranking look like? Something like:

    1. Kansas
    2. Texas
3-8 – Some combination of Mizzou, OU, A&M, KSU, OSU, and Baylor.
9-12 – Neb, ISU, CU, and Tech.

Or did I miss some impact recruits around the conference?

    I hope not.

I like Capel and think he is good for the conference.

    Maybe that is just me.

“There’s a solid chance Capel takes a mid level ACC gig after next season’s struggles.”

Out of sheer curiosity, Trips, how many times have you thought there was a “solid chance” Capel would leave? I don’t mean to be facetious, I’m just curious.

Daily, since he got to Norman.

    He’s renting. Didn’t even buy.

Just another Sooner mercenary, paying his dues.

  6. Nate, not as many as most. My buddy exchanges texts with Capel daily, and he claims Capel loves it in Norman. But if you listen to most basketball folks, they claim Jeff is as good as gone when a decent ACC gig comes available.

“But if you listen to most basketball folks, they claim Jeff is as good as gone when a decent ACC gig comes available.”

Most OU fans would sell Jeff Capel, Jeff Capel’s house, and Jeff Capel’s family for a MNC. I think this is more than sufficient justification for any serious basketball coach to move on. So it’s not like I’m upset by this in any fashion. Just curious more than anything.

    Trips:
You bash OU as if UT players have never done anything wrong. When was the last time an OU player got pulled over and arrested for a loaded weapon and two ounces of weed? This arrest only lead to a one game suspension (because they wanted him to play against OU)…Stoops would have kicked the guy off the team. Also a couple of years ago Texas had a player charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

Texas has had at least 10 football players arrested since 2006. OU was known for this type of crap in the late 80’s, and they rightfully ended up on probation. UT fans better hope their program doesn’t end up the same way. OU players make headlines on ESPN now by getting arrested for unpaid parking tickets and for shoplifting….enjoy the scrutiny when it happens to you.

BTW, nice “trail of tears” comment. You guys lost your backup center last season for advocating the lynching of our new president. Are you trying to be cute or are you racist as well?

Capel should take an ACC job not only because it would be a better basketball job, but also to get safely away from Texans.

Horns Down you make it impossible to admit defeat when you refer to yourself in the third person.

And StayClassy: “…Stoops would have kicked the guy off the team.”

Are you fucking serious? Have you been paying attention to who he’s adding to the roster right now?

I suppose you are referring to Chaisson; who now doubt has problems. His charges were dropped to misdemeanors, so were his actions actually worse than loaded weapons or aggravated robbery? No doubt he deserves and will be on a short leash, just as Jarboe was when he was booted last year for making his rap video about killing people. Every program has their share of idiots; Stoops has been pretty strict with dealing with his….so we’ll see with Chaisson.

And very cute Trips…I’m sure you’re making your relatives proud.

Pattillo had about three good halves this past season. It’d be ok to have him but this isn’t a killer. Next year’s OU season will come down to what this season did and that is the development of the best player from his freshman to sophomore year. Since college basketball is essentially a game driven by guard play, it’s not necessarily a given that there will be any drop off from this season.

The Pattillo academic thing is just part of the deal when you take on junior college players. The real progress the program is making is that Capel can recruit “four year” players. Kelvin never could.

I’ve never denied that Capel could/would leave for the ACC, and maybe he will, but with each passing year of success in Norman fewer and fewer of those ACC jobs will appeal to him.

I’ve never believed OU could be a national title contender in basketball (not at least since Danny Manning and Ed Hightower ripped my fucking heart out April 3, 1989), but my attitude is changing. It’s possible if Capel continues to recruit the kind of talent he’s bringing in.

I love the “were his actions worse…” responses from the Chiasson defense league. Tell you what, I’m coming over and I’ve got a screwdriver for your mom, your sister, your aunt, any woman you care about. I’m not going to actually kill them, I’m just going to scare the shit out of them and put them in counseling for the next 3 years. And tell them, “Hey, it’s not like I’m Jeffrey Dahmer or anything.” I’ve never said UT is white as snow on any level, but I know for damn sure Mack Brown wouldn’t recruit a piece of shit like Chiasson for the Horns, and I’m even more sure the majority of Texas fans wouldn’t be making excuses for such a dumbass move if he did.

Charges were dropped to false imprisonment, destruction of property, and coercion. These were obviously a bad mistake on his part, but had the screwdriver story been true there is no way he would have gotten off. Period. And he wouldn’t be playing college football anywhere.
If it had been a UT recruit you guys would have hired an airplane to fly a banner of your excuses for the kid, right behind your 45-35 waste of money.

StayClassy you must be on the same intellectual level as your uber-verbose fellow choklahomo Horns Down. Are you really so retarded to think that future star athletes have the same laws applied to them as normal folks, especially when Big Game Bob is interested in the kid? Come on, you know as well as I do that these kids get preferential treatment. Period. And no, if Mack had recruited that fucktard I guarantee there would have been backlash, you see, domestic violence isn’t our second favorite past-time here in Texas like it is in Oklahoma.

45-35, guess that kind of stings more after getting your ass beat in the NC game yet again…but keep throwing that lame-ass Sooner attempt at an insult around, just reminds me of a game I loved watching.

Ford’s supporting cast was better than Durant’s in his sophomore year. Durant’s had more talent (Augustin, James, Abrams) but Ford’s was more developed (Boddicker, Ivey, Mouton, Thomas) and had worked with him for

This notion of Hamilton as being a disaster area on defense is all a bit much. He rebounds extremely well which, if it wasn’t obvious, is extremely important in this game since it secures possession of the basketball. Winning in basketball is achieved through the scoring of baskets and it’s necessary to possess the basketball
