John Wall to UK

Posted by Trips Right on May 19th, 2009 under Basketball, Recruiting

No not the Island across the Atlantic you cheeky bastards. The fightin’ Ashley Judds of Kentucky.

John Wall pulled the trigger, figuratively of course, and decided on John Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats over Duke and Frank Haith’s Miami Hurricanes. If you’re scoring at home, Wall’s addition makes it 4 five star players in a 2009 class that already included Demarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, Daniel Orton, and 4 star Jon Hood.

Although Bledsoe is listed as a point guard as well, make no mistake about it, John Wall will be on the ball for the Wildcats next season. He’s a 6-3 version of TJ Ford with better range. He’ll have the kind of impact that Derrick Rose had if Cal can get this young but talented team to grow up ahead of schedule. Don’t be surprised if this squad is inconsistent in non-conference play and early on in conference play, and then gets hot and goes on a run in the tourney ala Michigan’s Fab 5. They’re that good. And remember, coach Cal is a better coach than Steve Fisher.

How many souls does Kentucky basketball have in its inventory to sell?

  1. “How many souls does Kentucky basketball have in its inventory to sell?”

    They’re fresh out, now.

  2. How quickly does Baylor get rid of Dwon Clifton?

  3. He’s lucky if he isn’t buried somewhere just outside of Belton.

  4. If they all make it in, easily the best freshman class ever.

We’re going to find out next season if there’s such a thing as too much talent. Expectations will be sky high. There’s going to be an immense amount of pressure to go deep in the Tourny. A FF will be expected.

As Trips mentioned, the early part of the season will likely see rough edges from Kentucky with losses to teams that have a decent amount of talent and a lot of discipline.

No offense to the prose, Trips, but the picture adds something to your story.

    /thinking you knew that.

Were there words in that story? Did you write something? Really you could have just posted Ashley Judd’s pic and saved the electrons.

  9. perky funbags, I mean article.

  10. Saving electrons? What about the DNA he spilled while googling Ashley Judd photos?

  11. I’d eat

  12. Since we’re derailing this thread, here’s a good Ashley Judd related video.

Not the best recruiting class ever…certainly not easily. Definitely one of them though. Should be like this every year for Memphis, since they’ll be losing half their player to the draft every year.

  14. Four 5-stars and one 4-star, at least one returning All-American in Patrick Patterson and Jodie Meeks hasn’t decided yet. You guys are right, they don’t sound that good, do they? I only wish Mr. Wildcat were alive to enjoy next season. GO BLUE!!

  15. Calipari made the Memphis tranformation complete today. He named Rod Strickland as an asst. coach. Strickland was Dir. of Basketball Operations at Memphis. He joins Orlando Antigua and John Robic on the UK staff — who were also at Memphis.

I have to believe that if any of the SEC schools really care about basketball they will have to get a “football” mentality when it comes to recruiting or it will be Kentucky and the 11 dwarfs for a very long time.

  16. What is the over/under on the number of seasons it takes Bruce Pearl to blow the whistle on Coach Cal’s recruiting technique?

I’ll retract the “easily” portion of my statement. However, besides the Fab 5, who else would compare?

Don’t know what service they are referencing, but this is the wikipedia listing of Fab 5 rankings:
Chris Webber #1, Juwan Howard #3, Jalen Rose #6, Jimmy King #9, and Ray Jackson #84.

Screw Cal. He’s a duplicitous cabrone that left Memphis complete screwed and took their recruits. But he’ll get what he deserves. Memphis loved him and he could have had a home for life, but no. He lets his Everest sized ego get in the way. The honeymoon won’t last forever at Kentucky.

I was referring to the class you just listed–very impressive finding the rankings BTW. If you ARE talking about rankings, they (UK’s current class) are stellar at worst. But IMO Cousins and Orton are both overrated. The fact that Cousins is listed ahead of Favors and Bradley is some services is laughable. Wall is one of the better high school players I’ve seen, but to me he’s the only one who has justified his ranking so far. To be honest, though, I haven’t seen Bledsoe play.

UT’s Durant led class, OTOH, will have 4 first round draft picks should James return to school for his senior season, including probably the best player to grace college basketball and one of the best PGs of the decade in Augustin. Not saying that class was on par ratings wise with the present Kentucky class, just giving a comparison of what they have to live up to.

The Duke class with Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer, and Mike Dunleavy that had the second and third picks in the draft was a biggie and I’m sure there are others that I can’t think of.

Ashley Judd- strong woman-big distraction. Now the song “Just Look What You’ve Done” by Brenda Holloway comes to mind (2009 summer Motown song). Not the best recruiting class, but it certainly isn’t the worst, eh?

I saw Wall play in the Jordan BC and to me he did not look dominant at all. he had a bunch of garbage time points that actually made the game closer than it was, but at that point guys were just goofing. I am not saying he’s not the best player, but I don’t know that I would say it’s clear cut.

I thought Bradley and John Henson looked easily comparable.

Henson to me has looked like the most overrated player in the country, guy is weak as an 8th grader. Most overrated other than all the other UNC recruits, that is…Bradley is out of his league.

I was sure was sad to see John go to UK. So I told Scott I’d make up for it by taking a recruit from Texas. Apparently Mack hasn’t established a line I can’t cross.
