New USC Recruiting Shit

Posted by on May 12th, 2009 under Basketball, Football, Recruiting

The WWL sees more smoke in the vicinity of Watts.

We’ve been keeping an eye on this here and here.

This story is full of insight like:

If Floyd did pay Guillory for delivering Mayo to USC, that would be a major NCAA violation.

Apparently USC general counsel Carol Mauch Amir declined comment, probably because this story sounds like like a bad pot boiler.

Johnson said the payment occurred in 2007. Johnson was not present for the actual exchange, but Guillory reportedly told him that they were meeting Floyd to receive money that they could spend at All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas. Johnson saw Guillory meet Floyd outside a cafe and drove around the block. When he picked up Guillory 15 minutes later he was shown the envelope containing money.

Does anybody really think Tim Floyd would act as his own bag man?

Johnson’s attorney opined:

“Our sense is that something is imminent. I think the NCAA is very close to concluding their investigation. I would say it’s looming large and soon.”

Again, color me skeptical that the NCAA’s toothless gaggle of castrati really come after a storied program but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for the coppers!

Their basketball program ain’t that storied. The NCAA may come hard after b-ball to help distract from the fact that they won’t do anything to USC football.

All the reports I’ve seen say everything stems from the Reggie Bush stuff. That would be pretty funny to see them go after USC basketball. If they try to really slap down one program, you can bet that program will make a stink about the entire scene. Again, the NCAA wants no part of that.

Pete Carroll’s tweets should be interesting.

  4. The Reggie Bush stuff was coming out at the same time as the Bomar stuff in Norman, too. Difference, OU self-reported and took their lumps. U$C is still fighting it and the NCAA comes off looking like a bunch of hypocritical pussies.

So the lesson here is, don’t self-report.

The NCAA people are a bunch of hypocritical pussies. This is why they look that way.

  6. Ummm, if by self-report you mean the ou compliance people notified the NCAA after the whistle blower working at Big Red reported checks being cut to various members of the ou football team for work that was never performed then you’d be correct.

  7. anonymous said:

    May 13th, 2009 at 11:29 am

Also, why exactly is the lesson to not self-report?

What has happened to OU as a result of their “self-reporting” that makes that the lesson?

  8. “So the lesson here is, don’t self-report.”

Yeah I’m a little confused here too. Considering your “punishment” I’d think teams would be lining up to self-report.

“OU self-reported and took their lumps.”

Aside from some bad publicity for about 2 weeks, what lumps did OU take?

Numerous players were directed to Big Red by the athletic department to receive free money, and OU doesn’t miss a beat–they dismiss a QB who was obviously overhyped and in steps Bradford. I think self-reporting is clearly the way to go for unabashed cheaters.

  10. Um, in stepped a converted WR.

“Um, in stepped a converted WR.”

You’re right; I had forgotten about that. And Taylor is right that Thompson had spent the vast majority of his time at QB.

That insignificant detail aside, certainly you aren’t going to try to argue that OU received any significant sanctions after self-reporting.*

*OU didn’t actually self report, but they did some “investigation” and proposed some “penalties.” So let’s just assume that “self-report” means something along the lines of “cooperated”** in this instance.

    **kind of

  16. The point being missed is that OU actually turned over a report to the NCAA on what they uncovered, which probably lessened whatever penalty they would have received, but knowing full well the NCAA would do something about it.

Didn’t someone on these boards predict a few months back that USC would soon be receiving some significant lumps from the NCAA. Hmmmm, wonder where that fellow went off to. If I remember correctly, he seems to have never made a prediction which did not soon after end up turning out to be true. Too bad he is nolonger around. This board is definitely poorer for the absence of his wisdom and, of course, his deadly accurate predictions.

USC will get major sanctions from the NCAA on the same day that they finish the yellow brick road. You know that bit about “The check’s in the mail.”?…SC coaches don’t even wait for the mailman. USC, like another program north of the 214 area code, is a sacred cow with the NCAA, so at best, they might be given time out and made to go to bed without supper over this. Anything stronger would be out of character, not to mention impossible, with the N(utless)CAA. This is USC we’re talking about here, not SMU.

the other really beautiful thing about the OU “self-reporting” is that they had to do this just months after “completely investigating” the entire Big Red operation in the aftermath of Peterson’s “extended test drive” of a Lexus… and reported there were “no further improprieties”… Nothing to see here, move along…

but yeah, ponderos, you guys took your usual ethical high road…

  24. So the lesson here is, don’t self-report.

Let’s take some of the common assumptions of every UT fan on this site to their logical conclusions, shall we?

“OU football is the only relevant thing in Oklahoma”

Probably correct. So how hard would it be to track down the employee who “anonymously” ratted out the program considering her husband reportedly bragged on Texags.com? Karen Silkwood was just screwing with a company. This person was screwing with OU football. They wouldn’t even bother making it look like an accident. She’d just be a grease stain on I-35 south.

    “The NCAA is nutless”

100% correct. So, how does a nutless organization get any of the necessary evidence without OU’s help? Bomar’s tax records? Nope. Big Red’s time sheets? Not a chance in hell. And the so-called “whistleblower” would become either a hood ornament or a lying “disgruntled employee” with no proof and no credibility.

    “OU is an outlaw program”

Let’s run with this assumption. If so, why even bother “cooperating” even if only at face value? As demonstrated above, they had no chance in hell of getting any substantiating evidence without OU’s help.

And then there’s the “anonymous” email, which could’ve been tracked via its header to its owner and matched up to a Big Red employee who is fired for misuse of confidential business information or she’s framed for embezzlement and gets fired and prosecuted. Either way, she’s a “disgruntled employee” with no proof and no credibility.

The problem, ponderos, is that most of these tools just mix and match assumptions and guesses until they get something that fits their clearly objective Longhorn point of view. They view OU not as an outlaw program, but as a sort of Wile E. Coyote. They also stupidly assume that OU would’ve been no better in 2006 with Bomar than they were with Paul Thompson.

Why not self-report? Because had OU gone the asshole way about this, the “outlaw program” way, what happens? Well, Bomar stays on the team and develops into a hell of a QB, leading OU to wins over Texas in 2006 and 2007, and probably a national championship. (Paul Thompson was UT’s MVP in 2006). And if my aunt had balls…well, s/he already does, but I digress.

USC has proven that OU had no incentive to self-report. Play your cards right, keep everyone quiet (a much easier task in Norman, than LA), and nothing happens. Hell, the story probably doesn’t make more than a minor ripple on Sportscenter.

“…leading OU to wins over Texas in 2006 and 2007, and probably a national championship.”

Bwahahahahahahaha….how about learning how to tie your shoelaces, Okie, before you start running: as in, try winning one fucking BCS game before you start blabbing about how many MNC’s you could have won. Yea, and I COULD have been born with a 12 inch boner also….so what’s your fucking point?

Sorry, I may live in a bubble, but even the bubble boy has not been able to avoid hearing about the OU utter suckitude in BCS games, and so not even I am buying into your Boomer Sooner wet dream line about multiple MNC’s. Also, last time I checked, Bomar sucked. The last thing I remember about him was his lying on his back in a comatose position, crying like a big baby.

To sum up your post, I suppose you are saying in all that unnecessarily long ramblings is just this: OU still sucks, but just in a legally appropriate way – kinda of like how O.J. was not guilty in a legally appropriate way of slitting the throat of his formerly alive and breathing spouse. Have to admit, I’m up with that and don’t have too many problems accepting your version of how things really are. Hey, we live in a legalistic age.

What is so surprising or new about that? In this day and age, what criminal hasn’t learned how to cover their asses with legalisms and legalistic hinnie protectors. Apparently, according to your long ramblings, even the inbred mutants up above the Red River have managed to figure this tactic out. I personally do not see anything impressive or worth bragging about in all this – certainly not worth writing a long, rambling post over, that’s for sure. So you Okies are slowly catching up with the rest of humanity (I suppose this was bound to happen at some point. It seems the principle of evolution unfortunately does even apply to the trailer park living creatures north of the border). Anyway, congratulations….(a sincere) clap, clap, clap.

The “self ivestigation” involved turning over a cow turd and saying, “yep, there is cow shit under here, too.”

  34. OU got nearly nothing for the Bomar incident, regardless of whetehr they self-reported or not.

USC will get nearly nothing for the Bush incident, regardless of whether they fought it or not.

Mack could hand Colt a check for $50,000 on national television and UT would get nearly nothing for it.

That’s just the way it works.
