Let’s Play It Again

Posted by Scipio Tex on April 24th, 2009 under Football

Phillipsburg High School and Easton Area High School are going to settle their score once and for all by replaying their inconclusive 1993 rivalry game. It will also fulfill the secret desire of most thirtysomething males living in New Jersey and Pennsylvania factory towns: namely, going back to high school. (ref: see Springsteen, Bruce)

Peyton and Eli Manning will be serving as honorary coaches and Gatorade is sponsoring. There were 10,000 tickets sold in 90 minutes.

At least they had eight weeks to get in shape:

Cerimele has been leading the workouts for the players on both teams, along with members of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, which designed a training and nutrition program. They have watched many players drop more than 30 pounds in recent weeks. One player was able to stop taking medication for high blood pressure and cholesterol because of the improvements in his health.

I set the myocardial infarction line at +1.5.

  1. I’d mock them if I didn’t have two games of my own I’d like a second shot at.

  2. I feel similarly. It would be a lot of fun.

  3. I’d like to beat HenryJames to the punch and declare for the record that, no, I don’t want a rematch with the 1994 Westlake team. Although I think we might be able to score this time.

I’d be willing to play whatever Anderson teams Scipio played for, though. Damn Anderson sucked.

    Stomp!

I can haz 95 OU game again?

  5. I’d be willing to play whatever Anderson teams Scipio played for, though. Damn Anderson sucked.

Do you even know how to play badminton?

  6. Austin High – the only school even Anderson, Johnston, Lanier, & McCallum could safely mark a W by in pre-season.

  7. It’s “the barometer at which you are judged”? That what they say at Eastern Area. In Phillipsburg, Thanksgiving was always known as the astrolabe through which we were voir dired.

    But times change.

Tyrone Randolph is going to wreck shop.

  9. I set the myocardial infarction line at +1.5.

Shit, I’d love to go back and have Strake Jesuit line up again against St. Thomas, and the over/under on myocardial infarction would be higher than the over/under point total.

But damn if it wouldn’t be fun to try.

  10. Scipio, you must be older than I thought. We were 4-0 against those 4 teams when I played for Austin High (didn’t play Lanier, 2 against Johnston).

Of course, being the best out of that group of five schools is like being the best-looking senior at Devine.

  11. Scip, I graduated from AHS in 06, what year did you graduate from there?

I hope they don’t forget to buy insurance. I remember reading a story about a charity game played in West Virginia in which one of the players was paralyzed, and there was no insurance.

    He’s still there.

I didn’t know there were so many Austinites around here. I graduated from an Austin highschool in ‘86.

Of course our football program was such that our head coach begged my parents to let me play and that I would be the starting QB if I did. This despite having never played tackle football in my life due to the fact that I was a nationally ranked player in another sport. That combined with a broken neck by an older brother and my parents refused to let me play. Pussies.

That’s great. Let’s keep talking about a 16-year-old high school football game while the Easton area school district is in the process of firing a bunch of teachers. Sure, this is time well spent.

Tyrone Randolph looks like he could still go Fast Times at Ridgemont High on some people.

I’d suit up again against those bastards from the 86 McCullough team (nka The Woodlands). I was never fast to begin with so I figure I’d have an advantage on their rich asses now.

  16. I’ll look forward to the post game analysis
