Longhorn Update: Basketball, Nigerian Recruiting, Coprophilia, Sooner Cheatin’

Posted by Scipio Tex on April 21st, 2009 under Basketball, Football

If you’re ever in doubt about what to do with an extra football scholarship, find a West African.

Chris O. leaves Texas as a 4 time Academic All Big 12 selection, sports two undergraduate degrees, and holds the single season reception record for a UT running back (46). You have to love the work ethic and maturity guys like Chris O, Orakpo, and the Achos bring to the program.

***

George Brett wants to share his coprophilia with you. This captures the lazy goofiness of baseball and the defecatory decadence it breeds. Did you notice that Brett was also far more into telling his story than his audience was in receiving it? You have to love his last line: “Uh, whose the pitchers in this game?”

***

A very good interview with Chris Ogden (according to Barnes, the weakest Mr Basketball in state history) by Gerry Hamilton about next year’s team. Give it a listen.

***

Finally, OU and cheating go together like old Trans Ams and cinder blocks, but the Sooner administration is cleaning house. Oklahoma is cracking down on wrongdoers and this time they mean it!

As many of you know, social networkers were responsible for smuggling AK-47s, cocaine and steroids into OU dorms in the 80s, demanded that Kelvin Sampson text recruits more than a Spring Break hook-up, have set up elaborate pay-for-play programs with the tacit approval of the athletic establishment since 1952, and bought Adrian Peterson a Lexus. Barking Carnival applauds the Oklahoma administration for their swift and decisive action against the blogosphere menace.

Myself and Mack have been approving of this message for over a decade.

  6. Switzer later referred to Lawton (CT’s hometown) as “the armpit of Oklahoma.” Let that sink in.

btw, the real lesson from this? Quit self-reporting. Somebody tell me when the fuck somebody is going to do something about U$C and Reggie Bu$h.

  60. About 4 years ago I attended a function in Little Rock where Switzer was speaking. He openly admitted to paying Billy Sims cash personally to keep him in school his senior year. He also mentioned helping finance an abortion for a football player’s girlfriend (he would not mention the name) so the player could be more “focused” during the season.

But… but… in Oklahoma, isn’t that like calling it the garden spot of the state?

  64. Threadshitter –

If you knew anything about Texas football you would know that over the last several years, there have been many football recruits that are either from West Africa or are the children of immigrants from West Africa. Many of them come from Houston, which has a large immigrant community from that area.

Many of these recruits have been great ambassadors to the University on and off the field. You could say they have a high “hit rate” as it were, and Scipio’s comment in general was to give props to that group.

If you were a Polo fan, you might say the same thing about players from Argentina. It strikes me as odd that a person can’t even make POSITIVE comments about Africans without sounding racist, after that comment has been tumble-dryed through your hippie shit cycle.

If you will re-read the post, nothing was mentioned about the color of anybody’s skin. A correlation was proposed between recruiting success and a geographic location.

Racism won’t die until people like you allow the general public to discuss minorities on their merits or other characteristics without you immediately throwing out the race-card in response.

  67. Thank you, Nero. May I have another?

  68. i used to know a couple in kansas fairly well. the guy had coached some years at ou in wrestling.

passing through their town one time i stopped by to see them. the guy had gone somewhere so i visited with the wife.

we had never talked about texas vs ou or college sports but that time the subject came up. i asked her about his experiences at ou and specifically asked her opinion of cheating. her exact words: ‘honey, if you aren’t willing to cheat, you don’t really want to win.’

she went on to tell me she cheats at everything. told me not to play card games with her; she knows how to win. i told her the games she’s playing aren’t the card games.

  69. I’ve never read a psychotic break before. Fascinating.

glenn: I’m trying to figure out why the statement of a former OU wrestling coach’s wife has any bearing on OU. It sounds like you’re trying to make some sort of tenuous connection, but maybe I’m misreading it.

    nero: Very well said.

  71. nate, i asked the lady about her husband’s coaching career AT OU and specifically asked about cheating AT OU. sorry i didn’t spell that out. i wanted to know her opinion of OU CHEATING. ie, was she cool with it?

sorry i didn’t make myself plain.

  72. NateHeupel said:

    April 22nd, 2009 at 6:38 am

And so she responded by saying she believed if you weren’t cheating, you weren’t trying to win. You asked for a specific analysis, and you got this woman’s general philosophy on life. You said it yourself: she cheats at everything. You have again failed to do anything but show a tangential connection to OU.

  73. no. actually she indicated she was perfectly comfortable with the cheating that goes on at oklahoma — including that of her husband — and that, indeed, she embraces the philosophy on a daily personal level.

you know, i watched what happened with kelvin sampson at indiana and put that together with what i’ve seen at ou over the years and also what that lady said. i’ve about decided that cheating is addictive. that someone who is talented enough to prosper straight up is somehow warped by it — not unlike drugs, performance-enhancing or otherwise — into thinking they are not adequate as nature provided but must have the ’sure specific’ in order to do well.

i thought indiana was crazy to hire sampson. no doubt he would make a fine coach if he hadn’t been damaged, but he’s probably ruined for life. real pity that.

kind of like ou’s offensive line. if they can’t hold, they don’t know how to play.

  74. my girlfriend has the cutest little shitzio puppy

  75. we had some good friends who showed and bred several dog breeds. all went just fine until a bulldog and a shih tzu got it together. i never saw the pups, but nancy said they considered repeating the breeding, they sold so fast.
