Talked to my guy, and after the banquet, word is that Damion James is still leaning towards returning. DJ wants a ring, he wants a degree, and he’s disappointed in where he’s projected in the draft currently.
With Damion returning, Texas would arguably have the best frontcourt in America. It would certainly be one of the deepest with Gary Johnson, Alex Wangmene, and Clint Chapman coming off the bench.
The backcourt would be the envy of every halfcourt minded defensive coach to ever carry a whistle or throw a chair. Bob Knight, Tom Izzo, Ben Howland, you name ‘em, would kill to have a group that included Balbay, Ward, Mason, and Bradley. Four long, strong, intelligent lock down on-ball defenders.
Like pressing? Yes, we’re deep with athletes.
Shooters? Got ‘em. Ballhandlers? Check. Toughness? In Spades.
This Texas squad will roll out a 5 that’s too big for your 5, a 4 who’s too quick and athletic for your 4, a 3 with an offensive game to play in the League today, a 2 that will shut down your 2 on one and then punish his lazy ass on the other, and a 4 headed pg monster that can mix and match shooting, creativity, size, and strength to exploit whatever you’re trying to do at that position. Four capable lead guards, 3 Travis Waltons, two long range shooters, and a partridge in a pear tree.
Texas basketball is going to be disgustingly good next season.

Well, it’s more fair than penalty shots. And because goals are so rare, and mistakes from nerves can be so grave, the comfort of playing at home in front of home fans is worth a bit. In that sense, I don’t mind the away goals rule.

JJ is listed in most people’s Top 5 quarterbacks for the 2011 Draft. Ideal size, mobile. His accuracy has also improved dramatically. While Sherman runs a ton out of the shotgun, it is still a semblance of a pro offense.

That’s quite a stretch to view the away goals rule as a harkening to the territorial origins of the game. The game is now split between matches taking place entirely in one town or the other.
The rule is a bad one, IMO. You don’t even have to take it to its logical extreme

I’ll comment on that game. The Ags didn’t quit because, unlike their customary curb-stomping against K-State and OU, they actually had some early success where they scored on a broken coverage. Secondly, no doubt, Jerrod Johnson was on fire. If he plays like that every game next year, the Ags are going to be tough

Hey Trips,
How does Barnes handle the numbers? “Ask” two guys who aren’t going to get minutes to redshirt, and they either accept or transfer? Or is there another way?
Gonna be a fun ride next year…
The General said:

Trips Right said:

If I had to guess I’d say one pays his own way and the other transfers or continues pursuits elsewhere.
My guesses two of three following things happen if James gets in and Brown gets through the clearing house. Hill, Chappy, or Ward transfers. Jai Lucas or another kid pays his own way. Balbay heads back over seas to play professionally.

Redshirts still count as scholies. They either have to leave or “grayshirt” – a tactic typically reserved to Mack Brown and incoming OL.

I have a “2nd degree source” who spoke with Damion. In the discussion they had very recently, Damion made no mention of the incoming class or anything about how he would fit together with his UT teammates next year.

Not TR, but . . .
How does your excitement for this class compare to Durant, Augustin, James and Mason?
I am more excited about this class than I was the Durant class for the following reasons –
1) I knew Durant was a stud, but I had no idea he would be as ridiculously dominant as he would prove to be.
2) I though DJA was solid, but not great.
3) I thought Damion was exactly what he is.
4) I thought Mason was a white guy.
5) We had nobody coming back.
This year we have some pretty good basketball players on campus to complement the talent coming.

I mentioned this on another board, but I think the dynamics are there for some really intense practices. You’ve got veterans that don’t want to give up any PT and you have some very talented frosh that have reps for their intensity.
I believe Trips or someone else here already noted that they would not be shocked if a few fights broke out during practice next season.
Barnes will have his hands full, and loving every minute of it. So long as everyone realizes that they are teammates, and that potential greatness awaits them, they’re going to be a special bunch come next March.

The fact people are so quick to toss Ward into the transfer bucket is just the height of arrogance to me.
Smith needs to take one for the team and figure a way to go medical. He’s logjamming someone who might actually contribute. I’d like to see Chapman and Hill (and Ward) all stay.
I’m far from sold on how Brown factors into the mix, but Gerry and SLX seem to be fans so I’ll respect their opinions.
Wangmene is one to keep an eye on IMO. I don’t believe Buford is going to sit by if the kid isn’t going to get legitimate minutes and a chance to develop.

Suppose a player is willing to stop playing (to free up his athletic scholarship) but wants to get a non athletic scholarship so that he can finish his degree at UT. Is that legal WRT the NCAA? Does it ever happen? Any examples?
Bob in Houston said:
April 15th, 2009 at 5:10 am
Yes, that does happen, although it’s normally done in the case of career-ending injuries (UT basketball examples I can think of, William Wyatt, Chris Wright).
I can’t think of a specific case involving “giving up” a scholarship. They are renewable each year. If the player no longer plays, I don’t think the NCAA would care.
If someone paid his own way after having gotten a scholarship, I imagine they’d be all over that… where the money came from and all that. Remember, that was one of the things Dave Bliss did to get around the rules.
jc25 said:

I believe at Kentucky, Marquis Estill gave up his scholarship for a year when unexpectedly, both Tayshaun Prince and Keith Bogans came back. I think that was his junior season, and he was subsequently reinstated on scholarship his senior season. I’m sketchy on the details and if this is still an available practice.

Scagnetti,
“Good riddance”??
Seriously? Damion’s obligation is to do what is best for Damion. If it turns out that is going to the NBA this year, let’s be happy for him. He has been a great longhorn and would be a huge asset next year (just as he has been a huge asset for the horns for the last 3 years).
He has not signed with an agent yet so this process is still reversible. If he is not projected to go in the first round, he probably returns to school next year.
