2009-2010 Bracketology

Posted by Trips Right on April 13th, 2009 under Basketball

Joe Lunardi has us as a 5 seed. Perhaps Joe should have his intern give Andy Katz’s intern a call. Katz daddy has Texas as preseason number 4. He also has better hair and a winning smile.

Lunardi is a pedantic asshat for seeding Texas lower than an Oklahoma club that is losing Austin Johnson, The Big Pharma Brothers, and now possibly Willie Warren. We know him here at the Carnival as “Who Shot?!!” Willie Warren. Warren might turn pro because he thinks it’s cool to make it rain from the second floor of your local mall.

Seriously, though, Lunardi is fine. It’s actually an honest mistake especially if you watched Texas’ monumental offensive struggles last season. The inclination to make Texas no better than a top 20 team is a function of not realizing how truly handicapped last year’s squad was on the offensive end. Next year, when the Horns lose ball games, it’ll be due to gross inexperience and youthful mistakes. Not because the team has 4 non-shooters and 1 black hole.

Make no mistake, next year is going to be special if guys like Bradley and Jordan are as advertised. Throw in creative offensive talent like J’Covan Brown, shooters like Jai Lucas and Shawn Williams, and a surprise return from Damion James, and Texas has a chance to run the table and win the conference. Did I also mention the Horns will have the nation’s premiere low post player?

  1. Someone on another board said that Lunardi doesn’t factor in the incoming talent, just what’s coming back. This however just can’t be the case, on account of its enormous stupidity.

It would explain the five seed though.

If that’s true, then any ‘analysis’ by Lunardi is an utter waste of time.

Well, I can see how it would be difficult to judge incoming talent. And I wouldn’t expect someone from Philadelphia to have a handle on just what having a couple of guys who can get their own shot will mean to the Texas offense.

I think there is going to be a wide variation in opinions on Texas all the way up to the first dribble in anger. It’ll be kind of like OU this year… people either loved them or (relatively speaking) hated them.

  4. He actually uses some sort of computer ranking voodoo metric, which can’t possibly quantify what has not happened.

  5. As an aside, isn’t it nice that media opinions have no bearing whatsoever on basketball’s national champion?

That would be a good idea for football.

  6. Want to know another sick fact about next year’s freshmen? As good as Jordan Hamilton is on offense, Rivals has him listed at the #5 outside shooter among forwards.

    #1 is Shawn Williams.

Avery, Jai’ and (hopefully) J’Covan aren’t too shabby from outside either.

Our outside game is going to be night & day from last year. And oh, yes, we’ll have one of the most dominate centers in America.

  7. women be shoppin! we-men bee shoppin!

But seriously, as a part-time Kentucky fan, this Bracketology stinks. Kentucky an 8, but Louisville a 2 and Tennessee a 3? If the system can’t be forward-looking, why put up a Bracketology at all?

Texas has more talent COMING IN next year than 4/5 of the tournament-bound teams will have period…

  9. Sports Illustrated’s preseason top ten omits us, but includes Oklahoma. Oh well.

  10. So, the inspiration seems to be that OU is seeded higher than Texas because they’re getting an upgrade at point guard.

Do you wake up everyday in a cold sweat muttering “Oklahoma Oklahoma?”

  11. Do you wake up every morning muttering, I’m going to tool around the internet and make a bunch of unintentionally ironic posts?

  12. Pssst, Ponderos… you’re the one constantly on a Texas website. I couldn’t give you the URL of a sooner site if my life depended on it. I seem to remember someone mentioning sisterfucking.com, but that may or may not have been a joke.

And Texas is getting an upgrade just about everywhere, so I’m not real sure what your point is.

  13. TexOz:

I’d take Rivals basketball ratings with a grain of salt.

  14. Scip,
I hear you, but it’s good know that we’ll have better outside shooting next year. I’m sure Dexter is smiling everytime he thinks about it.

06_UT: you are probably right. I thought about changing the post description to “least favorite Barnes team” because that’s more accurate but I didn’t feel like it.
That said, I’m not sure this team would beat those other two. They would lose Abrams and let him go 7-15 on 3s and the Abrams team played better

10 weeks ago, Oregon played in the Rose Bowl as Pac 10 champions. Since their loss to Ohio State, the program has been in some kind of bizzaro parallel universe where every headline concerns a player arrest, a firing, or now a resignation.

    Prescient comment, Doc.

I think we learned today that no team is really a mirror image of Missouri, even if Clemson is about as close as it gets. Unless you have significantly better/more talented athletes, if you try to run with the Tigers, you will lose. This team is so much fun to watch in games

Good to see that Tom Penders still believes in the weave offense. Maryland finally figured out that if you pass quickly, the middle is always open.

Doc, the turnovers seemed to do the trick – there were great big chunks of time when Mizzou didn’t even have to get into a half court offense.

Great to see Ramsey have such a good game and pretty stifle Booker. As Euclid said during the game, even when Mizzou doesn’t play well

“Also because those other teams gave great effort almost every game. This team’s effort was questionable. Dumb and lazy, not a good combo…..”

This is what made this season so bizarre for me. This has never been a problem for Barnes’ teams. But I actually questioned this team’s heart and desire to play together

Travis Ford spent the 2nd half channeling his inner Rick Barnes — lot’s of standing around on offense while one player tries to generate something off a ball screen — then taking a forced shot.

So the Big 12 goes 5-2 in Round One.

This is the worst coached team ever in Barnes era. Period.
Worst defense over the whole season,
Offense sucked big time and the bench coaching was horrible, ransom’s attitude was better then the coach’s overall this season.
Trips write up pre and post better then the game plan and O schemes.

advertisers think they will probably get some deals for the additional 32 games that would be added. The feeling is that an ESPN would disount rates somewhat, since they already have a dual revenue stream — advertising dollars and subscription fees.

It’s all about content for ESPN — even mediocre content.

So far on Day Two, no buzzer beaters, but there was the obligatory #12 over #5 with Cornell thumping Temple 78-65, but the Ivy League school was everyone’s “inside” pick for an upset. Still the day hasn’t come close to generating the action that Thursday had.

I wasn’t trying to say they quit. They just didn’t play hard a lot of the time. Lazy = lack of effort. Example, our transition defense was about 75% effort and 25% stupidity. We loafed down court a lot. The kids didn’t like to lose so they would fight back,

  • Patrick Bateman commented on the blog post Barnes worst team   8 hours, 45 minutes ago

This the most disappointing team because our talent level is higher than those others.

The DGib/Buckman team was the least talented, barely, after the injury to LaMarcus and Tucker’s suspension.

Last year’s team was the hardest to watch. Just watching AJ Abrams, who I don’t hate as much as most, run around like a
