Avery Bradley is Number 1

Posted by Trips Right on April 9th, 2009 under Basketball, Recruiting

At least according to ESPN’s Top 100. Congratulations on a well deserved accomplishment. I guess when Oak Hill Academy’s coach says you’re the best guard he’s ever faced, it carries a little weight.

If you’re scoring at home, that gives Texas the 1, 8, and 53rd best player in the land. I remember when I was pumped to get Corey Lockridge.

Hook ‘Em.

Locksley Collie was pretty solid back in the day.

  2. Well deserved. Avery dominated every opponent he played against last week in all aspects of the game.

I caught up with Todd Wright a few days ago and he’s particularly geeked to get this kid on campus. He’ll be here for most of the Summer.

  3. Locksley Collie and Panama Meyers, boy! I respected the hell out of those guys. Locksley was 6′6″ with a nine inch vertical leap who averaged about 15 per with a pure garbage game and Panama was 6-7 240 with the shooting touch of Dogus Balbay.

Those two were our front line with a three guard line up behind them and we still managed to not get slaughtered on the boards.

  4. Scip, it’s easy to rebound a ball out of the net.

  5. You are no Alvin Heggs, sir.

  6. I remember when I was pumped to get Corey Lockridge.

I remember when I was pumped to get Carleton Cooper.

  7. I cried real tears when Lance Hughes went to Texas Tech. He was the SWC’s answer to Rex Chapman.

Though I don’t know what the question was.

  8. I’ll never forget where I was the day Sheldon Quarles committed.

  9. Probably at a Pete Newell camp.

I once shook Sonny Alvarado’s hand. That was awesome, and the only thing that has to date eclipsed getting Dennis Jordan’s autograph.

  11. Locksley probably was 6′4″ or 6′5″ max. Back then he sported a kid n’ play haircut that gave him around 3 more inches in perceived height. If I remember correctly, he was not particularity athletic or physical, but he did have some nice, quick swivel post moves (and he had a big, Barkely-esque butt to get some room to move), a nice, soft touch around the bucket, and a running floater in the lane that was fairly consistent.

Panama was surprising a very strong defender. He was strong for his size with decent hops, which allowed him to defend players bigger than himself, but he too probably went for no more than 6′5″. Panama had unusually long arms which allowed him to play as essentially a taller player on the court, but we were really undersized back then. Texas B-ball has come a long way and, frankly, it’s about time.

  12. Scipio added Anthony Goode as a Facebook friend.

  13. Scipio bought Roderick Anderson’s headband off of Ebay and proceeded to wear it to the swim up topless blackjack table at the Hardrock Hotel and Casino. Said Roderick’s pheromones got him bitches.

  14. Panama showed the Japs a thing or two.

Or maybe it was Purdue. I forget.

  15. He cost Steve Scheffler draft money, I tell you!

Wendell Carter and Marlon Drakes used to dominate pick up games at Gregory Gym.

I once dunked on Hank Dudek.

  19. Trips checks into hotels under the name Titus Warmsley. Says it gets him a free Toblerone from the mini bar.

  20. How penders outrecruited KU for Brandy Perriman, I will never know. He must have paid off his AAU coach.

Brandy Perriman was the best post player I ever went up against at the Rec Center. I also once had a friend give James Brown a hard foul at the Rec when we played the football team. And, I lost a pick-up game when Travis Mays played on our team. Oh, the good ole days of humiliating myself at the Rec.

  22. I got to play a team featuring Shaun Rogers at the rec once. At 5′10″, 185 I got to “guard” him for much of the game (my teammates and I were all ChEs…I was white giant compared to my non-caucasian teammates). His game consisted largely of picking the ball up at the three point line, running in sans dribble, and attempting to dunk all over my shit. He didn’t make a single one. He was high enough every time, and obviously I was no impediment, but he bricked all of them.

  23. Instead of playing HORSE at Gregg Gym we played WHORES.

    I gladly lost every time.

  24. Shaun Rogers (when Shaun was a Frosh DE) and Ivan Williams came and played in our Low Hoop tournament one year. I got to defend Rogers on an 8.5′ foot goal. He didn’t miss any dunks.

  25. I feel like I stepped into a Dennis Miller random-reference-a-thon.

Is there a phone bank I can call to donate?

  26. Kenneth Sims made the local celebrity charity basketball circuit right after finishing up at UT and he was very good.

I have the distinction of having the ball stolen from me by Johnnie Moore and Vinnie Johnson. And Kenneth Sims mashed me like a bug in a pickup game once.

I met Jon Brownlee in an elevator at the Castilian once.I asked him why on Earth he’d transfer from North Carolina, and he mumbled something about playing time before asking if I was there for the party.

I was too star-struck to be able to answer.

No, not star-struck. Drunk. Too drunk to be able to answer.

i was playing in a pickup game at gregory gym back in the late eighties that matched a bunch of gym rat guys against some of the ut women’s team. i saw my 6′-5″ friend frustrated by his matchup against vicky hall. it got really physical and he ended up on the floor at one point…which was not easy to do. she wrecked his ego. the harder he played, the redder his face got and the further his game spiralled downward. we won the war, but my friend was never the same after losing that battle. that was a monumental moment.

  30. You shoulda seen Jon Arnett dunk over Wayne Clark and Al Almanza!

    Prescient comment, Doc.

I think we learned today that no team is really a mirror image of Missouri, even if Clemson is about as close as it gets. Unless you have significantly better/more talented athletes, if you try to run with the Tigers, you will lose. This team is so much fun to watch in games

Good to see that Tom Penders still believes in the weave offense. Maryland finally figured out that if you pass quickly, the middle is always open.

Doc, the turnovers seemed to do the trick – there were great big chunks of time when Mizzou didn’t even have to get into a half court offense.

Great to see Ramsey have such a good game and pretty stifle Booker. As Euclid said during the game, even when Mizzou doesn’t play well

“Also because those other teams gave great effort almost every game. This team’s effort was questionable. Dumb and lazy, not a good combo…..”

This is what made this season so bizarre for me. This has never been a problem for Barnes’ teams. But I actually questioned this team’s heart and desire to play together

Travis Ford spent the 2nd half channeling his inner Rick Barnes — lot’s of standing around on offense while one player tries to generate something off a ball screen — then taking a forced shot.

So the Big 12 goes 5-2 in Round One.

This is the worst coached team ever in Barnes era. Period.
Worst defense over the whole season,
Offense sucked big time and the bench coaching was horrible, ransom’s attitude was better then the coach’s overall this season.
Trips write up pre and post better then the game plan and O schemes.

advertisers think they will probably get some deals for the additional 32 games that would be added. The feeling is that an ESPN would disount rates somewhat, since they already have a dual revenue stream — advertising dollars and subscription fees.

It’s all about content for ESPN — even mediocre content.

So far on Day Two, no buzzer beaters, but there was the obligatory #12 over #5 with Cornell thumping Temple 78-65, but the Ivy League school was everyone’s “inside” pick for an upset. Still the day hasn’t come close to generating the action that Thursday had.

I wasn’t trying to say they quit. They just didn’t play hard a lot of the time. Lazy = lack of effort. Example, our transition defense was about 75% effort and 25% stupidity. We loafed down court a lot. The kids didn’t like to lose so they would fight back,

  • Patrick Bateman commented on the blog post Barnes worst team   6 hours, 4 minutes ago

This the most disappointing team because our talent level is higher than those others.

The DGib/Buckman team was the least talented, barely, after the injury to LaMarcus and Tucker’s suspension.

Last year’s team was the hardest to watch. Just watching AJ Abrams, who I don’t hate as much as most, run around like a

Missouri pulling away from Clemson (68-60) with 7 to play…knew I should have never bet on Oliver Purnell, even if it was against this Missouri team.
