I think the asterisk tells the story. It’s clearly a motivation tool being used by Mack to keep last year’s fistfucking top of mind at all times during game preparation.

If they were displaying this inside of DKR-TMS I would be embarrassed, but a simple locker-room display is no issue in my opinion.

  4. Don't think I like it said:

I can just hear a soundbite in which Mack tries to justify it. I am scheduling 5 cringe sessions per day to prepare myself physically for hearing it.

I hope it’s just a motivational tool and Mack doesn’t really believe that was earned.

I don’t have a problem with it. It’s pretty obvious, after the final bowl results were in, that the Big 12 picked the wrong team. Texas was the best last year.

I’m sure Mack knows exactly what he’s going to say about it. I would love to hear Stoops’ comments, although they likely won’t be on the record.

  8. Expresses my feelings about last year perfectly. I’m cetain that all the regular hardasses on the webs will express disdain and disgust over this in their usual hyperbolic fashion, but as TTR indicated, it’s there for a reason.

And it made Tim’s vagina bleed again, so looks like a win/win to me.

  15. By this logic Ole Miss should put National Champions 2008* in their locker room.

They were the only team to actually beat Florida.

Utah should get one in their locker rooms also, hell by this logic I could find half a dozen teams that could put some kind of * by something.

  18. Agree with Crown & Coke,

If this is on a wall seen by the general public etc…that would be a different matter, but if it is in a place that the players and staff see on a daily basis to remind them of the consequences of leaving your future in the hands of others it is a great idea.

Heck, this isn’t nearly as stupid as some coaches and goodness knows how many high priced sales consultants I have been exposed to other the years.

  25. I bet its gone when they start up fall practices, probably with some holes and crumbling drywall left in place so the players remember what was stolen from them.

  26. Forgot to add…I hope the media runs with this. Let this team close ranks while the same media that stole their championship bitches about them laying claim to it. The ‘us against the world’ motivational tool can be effective.

  27. This smacks of participation ribbon.

If you wanted to put this somewhere in the locker room to remind the kids what a let down will cost you, then fine. Do not put this in a public place to highlight your lone conference championship in the MB era.

Now the department has to stick by this thing or tear down the building.

Participation ribbon? The 2008 Longhorns had a better season than any other Big 12 team since 2001, save the 2005 Longhorns. They only had one loss, and beat a team that finished in the top 5 (OU), and another that finished in the top 10 (tOSU). None of the other conference champions since 2001 (again, excepting the 2005 Horns) has had such a great season. This is not participation ribbon stuff. This is more like claiming Hank Aaron should really be considered the home run champ.

I agree completely with celebrating the accomplishments of a great and enjoyable football team that actually achieved beyond what most hoped (a rare occurence).

This highlights what the team did not win, and that is a Big XII championship.

The asterisk goes on Barry Bonds number 755, not on Hank Aaron’s 714, so your comparison is completely specious. If Oklahoma (or some enterprising young frat guy) were to place an asterisk on their 2008 Conference Championship banner, then that would be completely appropriate.

  31. I think it’s funny.
