Football Recruiting: DE Reggie Wilson A Longhorn

Posted by Scipio Tex on March 20th, 2009 under Football, Recruiting

As reported by both Burnt Orange Beat and Orangebloods.

The West African connection will not be denied

This is a huge commitment – not only for his individual quality and as another DFW dagger slipped into OU’s ribcage – but it also brings us up to 21 in what will prove to be one of the strongest recruiting classes in Texas history. The quality of the defensive prospects is particularly off-of-the-charts.

Enjoy his film – mind you, this is JUNIOR film. Damn.

  1. Anyone else glad you are not a quarterback in his district?

  2. At this point I’m glad that I’m not a qb in the Big 12. In a few years Okafor/Wilson may end up as formidable as Orakpo/Kindle of ‘08.

For those of you w/o Rivals subscriptions there’s film here:

Geez, what do you know? The Shag Ag was right on the money about this one as well. That would make three in a row. So much for the theory of cultural integration as far as CFB recruiting is concerned. Now all that remains is to see if the Shag Ag is right about L.S. also. I wouldn’t bet against me. I happen to be on a hot streak.

  8. outstanding!

look at wilson’s clips and imagine pairing him with this guy:

  9. Mmmmmmmmm … good football news. Helps me forget the inevitable bad basketball news. And an especial thanks to bevo nips for the film for the cheap seats. The man is EVIL.

  11. Muschamp and the BCS snub have created the perfect storm. Hell hath no fury like Mack Brown scorned.

  12. 3 commits away from the best class ever signed in the modern era at Texas.

  13. Duuuuude.

  14. So apparently, Jeffcoat’s sister isn’t good enough for ou and doesn’t have a scholarship offer as of today. If she’s Texas good, I say we fire off an offer.

  15. The only bad thing about the 2010 recruiting class is that we have to wait 2 years to see them in burnt orange. The Horns’ defense is going to be freakishly good for years to come.

    Awesome.

As an aside, I am visiting my in-laws in Oklahoma City and seeing the usual amount of Sooner gear on the locals. What I am not seeing and hearing on local sports radio is the cockiness typical of pre-2005. Very definite sense of momentum swing in Texas’ direction. This is another brick in that wall.

I wonder about all the OB and Ketch hate that I see constantly everywhere on the boards. Hasn’t he done much to contribute to the increased exposure and popularity of Longhorn sports in general? Why all the hate for a man who is the leading source of recruiting and football info for Hornfans? Is all the hate just an expression of underlying jealousy of the man’s obvious level of success? Considering his site is the largest of its kind in the nation, he must be doing something right and there must be a whole host of people who appreciate it and who, more importantly, are willing to put their money where their mouths is and go and pay for it.

“White and Jeffcoat will commit to Texas by May, IMO.”

Aside from the information from this site, I don’t really keep up much with recruiting, and so I don’t really know much about the Jeffcoat situation, but I just have a feeling that he is going to be a difficult get for the Horns. From the little that I have been able to gather, he may have a little of that Moody attitude of thinking he is a little too good for Texas. All the press clippings he has been getting about his talents and pedigree may have gone a little into his head, and when you take this possible attitude into consideration along the personal connection his father has with USC, then Texas may have a tough time reeling Jeffcoat in. Not a really big deal though. Wilson is probably a better prospect overall and with a better upside than Jeffcoat.

  33. Stoops to Staff: great stuff!

Unfortunately, it appears Satan may be too busy in Congress right now to spend more quality time with his boy Bob…

  34. I agree with you on Jeffcoat Shag…I think he winds up with SC when push comes to shove. I think White commits to the good guys before long, and I seriously hope you’re right on Seastrunk eventually choosing us. I’m a cheapskate and don’t subscribe to any of the premium services, but I can read tea leaves pretty well, and I figure we get two, maybe three more verbals to wrap up this class. It’s already a top five class, and White and Seastrunk would make it a top one class.

  35. coolhorn, there’s still a lot of time between now and next Feb, but this class is on the verge of being one of the best ever at UT, especially on the defensive side.

Adding either Hicks, Darius White and/or LS would guarantee the 2010 class as always belonging in the eternal debate of “best ever.”

What’s crazy is this kid will spend most of his career as depth behind Okafor and Mims, who I think are both better athletes than Wilson or Jeffcoat. I think Greg Daniels is the best athlete at DE in this year’s class.

  37. Texas is Hicks’ favorite, which most of us probably know. Has he expressed any timeline on his decision?

  38. ded,

I think there is going to be healthy rotation of pass rushers against spread teams, and possibly 3 DE on the field on pass rushing downs. I see alot of playing time for all these kids.

  39. Jeffcoat and D. White both favor Texas very strongly. White will likely be the next at #22.

“Jeffcoat and D. White both favor Texas very strongly. White will likely be the next at #22.”

Maybe true, but why would he really want to when Texas has pulled in so many DE’s in its recent classes. Eventually, practicality does have to come into the picture at some point, even if it is true that the Horns have been his favorite. And besides all this, Dedfischer may just have a point. The offer and recruitment of Daniels may just tell you how the Texas staff really feels about their situation and chances with Jeffcoat. And this would be one of the reasons why I still think the Texas staff is high on LS: that the Texas staff has not offer another RB slot to anyone other than Shead. If they knew that LS was out of the question or unlikely, they would probably have done so already, given the pace of their recruiting.

I just don’t see Jeffcoat committing to the Horns, at least not unless his dad wants to use his son’s recruitment in some way to promote his own career in the state of Texas and that scenario is probably not likely.

  41. Shaggy Aggie said:

“I think Greg Daniels is the best athlete at DE in this year’s class.”

If this is the case, Ded, then how come everyone, aside from yourself, who has seen film of him (I haven’t seen any film) says that he is either slow or has slow feet or a slow first step. I mean, slow is slow. Anyone can see that on film. Exactly how is Daniels a the better athlete. And by the way, I am inclined to believe you. Too be honest, I wasn’t totally blown away by either the youtube stuff on Jeffcoat or Wilson, although I preferred the Wilson stuff (like it matters cause what the hell do I know about this stuff).

  42. Wilson seemed super quick for his size. His speed is listed at 4.8 but he seems more like a 4.6 guy to me. He is 6′4″ and 240 lbs. That is big but not gigantic but, nonetheless, he looked like a giant compared to the size of the people trying to block him.

It seems to me that it is very difficult to tell how good a guy is by film unless the competition is first rate.

It seems to me that, at least at UT, the DEs are better athletes than the TEs (in general). Anybody know why? It seems like we’ve had quite a few DEs that weigh 260 and can run a 4.6 but very few (any?) TEs that weigh 260 and can run a 4.6.

It seems to me that the hurry up offense makes the TE position even more important than it used to be (i.e. because the TE makes the offense more multiple). There are not many 260 pound TEs who can run a 4.6 but shouldn’t we be the one recruiting them?

  43. Kafka, I don’t agree completely with what you said about the comparison of DE’s to TE’s. It depends upon your defining traits for athletic ability. The only DE Texas has had that can match the agility of Thomas and Finley is Kindle. Orakpo is big and fast, but I don’t think I would want to see him matched up against them down the field.

Texas has had some great athletes at TE, just not at this time, but that will change with Matthews. Additionally, there just aren’t many 6′6″, 260 lb. te’s that have the speed and agility to play split off like Gresham or Martellus.

Just aren’t many of those guys around as most in my opinion are playing hoops. Hell, tell me Gary Johnson wouldn’t be a great tightend.

  44. Kafka, you seem worried about our tight ends. That’s understandable given how many serious injuries we’ve had at the position. However, going out and recruiting big fast battleships for tight ends isn’t the prescription for our problems.

Spread offenses like what we run use a different kind of tight end. Lighter, quicker, H-back type tight ends prosper in the spread. They’re not pro prototypes, and usually not great blockers, but blocking down on the offensive line isn’t their main purpose in life. You want tight ends who make a nice safety valve for the passing attack, who find seams in quick defenses.

We have those type of tight ends already on campus, and if they can stay healthy, our offense will be much better for it this coming season.

  45. Coolhorn and Justaguy: great points.

My theory is that exteme hurry up offenses are changing the rules in football (eg: OU last season). The old wave was the spread offense. The newest wrinkle is the extreme hurry up offense (layered on top of a spread, for example).

The XHU O locks the D into a particular personnel package (i.e. either optimized for stopping the run (eg: 4-3) or the pass (eg: nickel)). If the XHU offense can pass or run efficiently without substituting, the D is at an extreme disadvantage.

The easiest way to be multiple is to have players who can participate efficiently in both running and passing attacks. For example, Colt is multiple because he can run and throw. A TE who can block effectively and is a dangerous pass receiver is also multiple. A running back who pass blocks great, is an excellent receiver, and runs well is multiple.

I am a huge fan of Thomas and Finley but I don’t think that you could ask either guy to block a DT. A 260 pound TE might not be able to move a DT or even hold the block very long but he could slow a DT long enough to make a quick pitch to the TB to the outside work fine.

Guys like finley and Thomas are still multiple. they may not be able to block a DT (or even a DE) but they can block an LB and DBs.

WRs who can block very well are also multiple. A guy like Malcolm Williams who is big enough to block an LB is a huge asset at WR.

The essence of multiplicity is that you can block a guy who is at a “larger” position than the position required to cover you in pass defense. For example, if you can block an LB but have to be pass defended by a safety, you are multiple.

There is a reason that Mack focused so much on the run this spring. To really take advantage of the XHU O, you need to be able to both throw and run. To run, you need guys than can block effectively. Playing 4 small WRs is for schools who can’t recruit big guys at the receiver position (i.e. not Texas).

There are few real big, real fast guys available but that is exactly why we need to be the one snagging them.

Gary Johnson would probably make a good TE but Damion James is the guy I would rather have playing TE (more athletic). On the other hand, does Damion have sufficiently good hands? Maybe not.

  46. Shaggy Aggie said:

    March 22nd, 2009 at 10:49 am

“does Damion have sufficiently good hands? Maybe not.”

Doesn’t everyone who plays basketball have good hands, aside from your PG? To shoot the ball effectively, don’t you need good and soft hands. And I agree, I think James would have been an awesome TE, but the game of BB seems to pay more and taxes your body less.

About the TE’s, maybe Mack, being a nice guy, wants to give the other teams a chance to win or stay close. Or maybe the difference in athleticism is due to the same reason why CB’s tend to be more athletic than WR’s. Only raw athleticism is needed to play the position. It maybe difficult to find guys that size with the coordination, the skillset, and the hands to play that position at a high level. And, also, it could also be due to athleticism being more valued on the D end than the O end on the field.

  47. Shaggy, it depends. Yao Ming has great touch shooting the ball and yet on the defensive end looks like George Mueller rebounding the ball. I swear Yao looks like he is playing volleyball sometimes when he tries to rebound.

Kafka, Just curious but how in the world would a TE be blocking down on a DT on a quick pitch. If it is a 3 man front he would have an OT to help him and all that would be required on the play you described is really to tie up the defender.

Interesting to me in the Fiesta Bowl this year was that Texas did run the ball with some effectiveness in the 2nd half with Colt under center and a tight end.

  48. “Interesting to me in the Fiesta Bowl this year was that Texas did run the ball with some effectiveness in the 2nd half with Colt under center and a tight end”

Think that had more to do with tempo/Ohio St fatigue than the blocking ability of Greg Smith…

“Think that had more to do with tempo/Ohio St fatigue than the blocking ability of Greg Smith…”

Isn’t Greg Smith your 280lb TE? If he can’t block then what can he do and what the hell exactly are you all teaching your TE’s over there on the 40 Acres?

And yea, I was wondering about that TE blocking a DT stuff as well. I was just afraid that Kafka would respond with a chapter long technical explanation on the issue and so I selectively chose pass on asking that question.

  50. Newy, That might have been the case, but outside of OU I can’t seem to recall a game that Texas played last year where it was able to effectively run the ball in the second half while the outcome of the game was in balance.

Shaggy, Smith was a hs tightend who was going to grow into a tackle, but was moved back to tightend with the loss of Irby and Marshall last season. Problem is that he is so slow now he make Ullman look like a downfield receiving threat and he really can’t block.

  51. bevo nips said:

justaguy – I would respond that the only games that came down to the wire at all were OU, tech and tOSU.

And believe it or not I think that final drive against Tech we were pretty successful running it – highlighted by a 20 yarder from fozzy and the TD from Vondrell. This after a 3.75 quarters of totally ineffective running….

  52. Mysterious Pakcage said:

    March 23rd, 2009 at 2:22 am

I’ll never understand why we gave greg smith, marshal, and higgins a scholly.

  53. bevo, Tech is an interesting one as Texas had almost no success for the game and then on that last drive ran for over half of their game total.

Okie State was close going into the fourth and Texas had little success running the ball (12 carries for 33 yards).

In the Fiesta Bowl Texas started running the ball in the 1st and 3rd drives of the third quarter (both which resulted in td’s) and had another drive working until Colt had the fumble that stalled the drive. If I am not mistaken, much of that running was done with Colt under center against the Buckeyes.

  54. Ecurbmanchild said:

    March 23rd, 2009 at 11:32 am

Bottom line is our running game sucks unless your named Colt. I have great hope for Fozzie, but outside of him, we need serious help.

  55. a little change of subject but still recruiting:

on one of the boards some guy purporting to be a horn fan is saying that darius white skipped out on our junior day and went to okie state’s with his buds from high school. the poster speculates that darius and two buds are possible to osu as a package.

yet i’m reading all over the place great optimism on darius wearing our orange, and somebody on that board answered the aforementioned poster saying that dw didn’t come to our junior day because he had been to austin numerous times already.

anybody know what the real deal is? curious minds have to know, you know.

  56. Justaguy:
I may be living in the past but when I played TE, I blocked down on DTs all the time. It is still true that a TE sometimes has to block a DT. Yeah, he probably gets help but he still has to deal with the DT when the DT sheds the initial block.

Even if the D is stuck in a personnel package optimized to stop the pass, they might have done it by replacing a DT with a DE or replacing a DE with an LB or replacing an LB with a safety (i.e. there may still be 4 D linemen).

The larger point is that these big fast TEs are very difficult to defend. UT, for example, had terrible problems this year defending big TEs. They are great assets in run blocking but yet can still run fast enough to be receiving threats. Why wouldn’t you want a couple of these guys starting for you (or at least one if that is all you can recruit)?

  57. glenn,

I think they’re talking about White’s teammate Rashod Favors. White has already been to one of the Texas junior days.

  58. thanks, hj.

yeah, the guy said favors and another dunbar player named sanders got white to go with them to stillwater. my impression is that sanders is using the other two to get invited places he might not otherwise.

glad to hear that big d did make one of the j-days. i think it is good to be there in the excitement of all those youngsters visiting.

“If this is the case, Ded, then how come everyone, aside from yourself, who has seen film of him (I haven’t seen any film) says that he is either slow or has slow feet or a slow first step.”

Because “everyone” doesn’t know what the fuck they’re watching and I don’t agree with them. Daniels would outrun Wilson or Jeffcoat by 2 seconds in one of those NFL change-of-direction cone drill things.

  60. dedfischer said:

    March 23rd, 2009 at 4:42 pm

On that note, I actually disagree with myself as Hutto’s Nehemiah Hicks is probably the most athletic DE that I’ve seen on film to date in this class. He could run circles around most of these other dudes.

  61. The issue I don’t think is why doesn’t Texas recruit a big tight-end that can run, but instead finding one. They did recruit Martellus and outside of him the state hasn’t exactly produced a large number of quality tight ends.

I can’t say whether they are on in a gym somewhere or that the spread offense popping up all over the state on the high school level means those guys end up on the defensive side of the ball. Just that I don’t recall many coming out of the state.

  62. I’m actually surprised Texas hasn’t offered Hicks as a TE.

  63. TaylorTRoom said:

2003 was a good DE recruiting year in Texas, with five DEs rated in Rivals’ Top 100 nationally. #25 Moss went to Florida, #52 Crowder came to Texas, #65 Dotson went to OU, #98 Jack went to TAMU, and #100 Washington went to LSU. I think Texas offered most, but only got Crowder (who was a very good one to get).

  64. what do you mean ‘texas offered most’??

lsu and florida offered most, followed closely by oklahoma and a&m, but, nationally, none of these could match the offers served up by southern cal and oakland.

  65. Callkevin said:

    March 24th, 2009 at 5:35 am

He means, in case you were being sincere, that Texas extended a scholarship offer to most of those players. I’m not positive about Jack, but I believe the others were all offered.

Then in 2004 we managed to make up for the misses by bringing in Nic Redwine. Oh, yeah, and that Orakpo guy.

  66. TaylorTRoom said:

Thanks. Of those five top 100 DEs from 2003, I think four ended up starting for their teams (Washington blew an ACL and transfered to App State). It looks like Crowder and Moss are the only ones with traction in their NFL careers.

  67. Congrats.

    Kid looks great.

Dear Mother of God, Haltom has got the fugliest unis I have ever seen.

  68. callkevin, i was being contrarily obtuse.

sorry. i was hoping ‘oakland’ would be telling.

yeah, i recall being pretty bummed about moss. crowder pretty much made me forget about that.

  69. recruiting update..kind off
jake mathews down too UT and the aggies..
usc is out of the picture. i hope he waits for the season to see reminded how horrible a&m is..

    KB,

You are going to be too smart for your own good. A common fault amongst Bracket makers. There’s a reason why the 55 year old admins win 80% of these things every year.

You shouldn’t be, after reading both guys over the past year, KB knows more about basketball and gambling than Millman does and it’s not even close.

A little warning about Chad Millman. I was pretty excited when I heard that ESPN hired a

Kansas State is beginning the NCAA tournament as a #2 seed with legitimate final four hopes (just ask the president) in less than 24 hours.

I’m going to need a moment to admire that sentence…….

    OK, I’m good.

As the anticipation has built over the last few days, I’m sure I’m not the only one who has taken

Texas Tech forward Darko Cohadarevic doesn’t just talk the talk — he walks the walk.

Good team that took number 1 seeded Louisville to the wire in last year’s tournament. Start 3 seniors and two juniors, very athletic. Solid pass first point guard. Their leading scorer was player of the year in the conference.

Good club that plays multiple defenses.

I just took Baylor going to the Elite 8. It’s a crazy mixed up world we live in.

Is it just me, or does it pain anyone else to not be able to determine who is going to beat Duke early? It’s bound to happen, but who will it be?

By “we” I meant the Horns. Kevin, why should I take Siena over A&M?

colorado ag, Utah State is as athletic as Nebraska. You’ll be fine as long as they don’t go 16 for 31 from three.

Siena, on the other hand, is going to beat you like you stole something. Maybe not, but the Saints should win.

Great article Scipio. Also, thanks for the dime.

Looking at the Tournament futures market, Vegas is telling us what they think about Onuaku’s health. The Orangemen have the easiest region and road to the fianl four, yet they’re +700 to win it all, while UK and Kansas, teams with much tougher roads, are +250

My brackets are pretty much locked down except the South. Can’t get myself to take Baylor, and Duke doesn’t feel right. Nobody seems to be high on Nova. It’s all about the Big East and Big 12 this year.

It’s a crying shame we suck so bad. We are in a good

Scip, like a peaceful Indian in the 1800’s, I never trust a Mormon that can shoot. Utah State has me worried.

If we escape the first weekend, things get very interesting with a potential Sweet 16 match-up with Duke. Ugly up the game and guard like hell on the perimeter in front of a

    CJD -

Possibly. However, I’m telling you – the beauty of these intergame lines is that when you see that all-too-familiar big early game lead that you know will evaporate down the stretch as soon as the team starts regressing to their 3 point shooting mean, there’s some money to be made.

I’d say you have your priorities straight.

Anytime. How far do you think the Aggies go? A lot of people think Utah State is the most dangerous pure shooting team in the tournament.

Last year in Vegas, Friday morning, stumble to the line at 8:30 to make my bets, put $20 on a four-team parlay on the four 9:00 am games, nailed it! Three of the four games’ spread was determined in the final 0:30. Walked away with $220.

Yeah, so what if that is the only
