I’m going to give this a tournament feel with a quick synopsis of what went down vs. the Gophers. Hell, boys, we have a full practice tomorrow morning and then a Saturday morning walk through before facing Duke. And for those of you that don’t think we need to pack a lunch, the Devils have currently drawn 7 fouls, five minutes into their game vs. Binghamton. Dexter Pittman better brush his teeth.
This’n is an easy one to write up. The game turned on one thing defensively and one thing offensively. On offense, AJ Abrams just went off. Now Dex Pittman and Damion James kept us within striking range until AJ found his stroke, but AJ’s 4 threes in a two minute span was the difference. The kid just has to be ecstatic to get out of conference. Hopefully the rims stay big when we play the Devils.
On defense, Texas was making the game far too easy on the Gophers because we extended our defense 30 feet from the bucket in the first half. This led to easy penetration looks for the Gophers when they really didn’t deserve any respect shooting the basketball. In the second half, Texas went to a softer M2M that enticed jumpshots from the Gophers. Since Texas is more athletic, they were able to get into Minnesota’s jumpers and bother the Gophers deep attempts. This allowed the Horns to pull away.
On the glass, it wasn’t close. Dex Pittman just dominated the boards like a one man wrecking crew.
AJ Abrams
He’s the Alan Parsons Project of Texas Basketball. Sometimes he irritates the hell out of you, and other times he adds the unexpectedly good ambiance to the perfect situation. I’ll sum up my feelings aobut his play with a couple of lyrics from APP’s Eye in the Sky, “Don’t say words you’re going to regret, don’t let fire rush to your head, I’ve heard the accusation before, and I ain’t gonna take anymore believe me, the sun in your eyes, make some of your lies worth believing.”
Unbelievable 8-15 from deep for 26 points and 3 steals. He can be a difference maker out of conference when scouting reports are more guidelines than hard and fast rules.
Damion James
His two 3’s were fool’s gold that led to too many deep jumpers. Make no mistake, when Damion went to the rack he was unstoppable. But fool’s gold ain’t bad when it happens early in the ball game and you can head it off before you get under your season average shooting percentage. Damion was the most athletic player on the floor and his 9 big boards were proof positive.
Connor Atchley
Connor had some very productive minutes with a flush, a couple nice defensive plays, and 4 big boards in ten minutes. He can be a viable weapon on this team. What does he have to lose at this point?
Justin Mason
His assignment tonight was to defend and rebound, and he did a nice job. We’re going to need this kid against Smith and company for Duke.
Gary Johnson
Really tough night for Gary. It seems like he’s feeling his way back into the flow of the game. We’ll need him against Henderson and Singler on Saturday.
Dogus Balbay
For a kid that had his best shooting night this year, Dogus had a rough game. His 4 turnovers really hurt the ball club, but not more than his unwillingness to shoot. Teams continue to go under ballscreens for Dogus, even when they’re made 15 ft. from the bucket. Balbay needs to attack the basket or shoot the ball, otherwise he’s hurting his teammates, specifically Dexter Pittman. Balbay can’t continue to be a source of help. He needs to be aggressive.
Varez Ward
Ward is your unheralded MVP. He came in and was a steadying influence at the point guard position. Not only did Varez spread the floor by garnering respect as shooter from the Gophers, but he also attacked the rim frequently, drawing fouls and getting easy buckets. Tough kid who had 4 assists and just 1 turnover.
Clint Chapman
Gonna need you Saturday Clint. With all those high ball screens and North Carolinian Duke whistles. Gonna need all 5 of your big fouls. Keep battling partner.
Dexter Pittman
My man. Best player on this team on a night to night basis. He’s swimming up stream and still dropping double doubles on all comers. Again, if he played on a team with 3 legit perimeter players, he’d average at least 3 dunks, 25 points, and 12 boards a night. We’d all be singing songs about him. Even making lemonade out of lemons, Dex was 7-12, had 11 boards, and 17 points. He’s sick.
Coaching
Tip your hat to Rick for making a huge defensive adjustment in the second half. Instead of pressuring the Gophers, Barnes gave Minnesota enough halfcourt offensive rope to hang themselves. Texas went on their run when they just focussed on staying in front of Nolen, Westbrook, and Johnson, and made Minny shoot the basketball into the contesting arms of the Longhorn athletes. When Barnes made this tweak, Tubby didn’t have a prayer.
Great game for the Horns. Now let’s go rock those pretentious pricks from Durham.

In his post-game press conference Barnes said Gary Johnson’s back stiffened up on him, and that is why he spent so much time on the bench.

Anyone else see that VCU cheerleader(?) just now? What the hell was that? I think he got lost on his way to a rave. Or he just snorted a ton of Ritalin.

trips, any chance K doesn’t have hard and fast rules on AJ? we were reminded tonight that he really doesn’t need that much room. but he does need a little. that is mostly what minn gave him. and he burned them for it. he is a hell of a shooter.
it was nice to see him play so well on the D end.
given the way this year has gone, i think round 1 couldn’t have gone better.
now, i’ll just be on a 2 day fast to beat duke. beating duke and a sweet 16 to cap off this enigmatic season? pure gravy.

cheerleader? I thought he was one of the players off the bench, he had a jersey on. Maybe he was just excited, trying to pump the bench up. still, that was awful.

Great breakdown.
Happy for the win, as it’s good juju for the program.
Binghampton shot 53% from the field and still got blown out.
But Duke destroyed them on the boards and got a lot of whistles.
Let’s junk our D enough to keep Dexter Pittman on the floor. I’m convinced that he and D. James can do real damage on the offensive glass against the Dukies and Dexter is learning to pace himself sufficiently to play a hard 30 minutes.
Gary Johnson would get used by Henderson (or Singler for that matter). Let’s get real. I think you put Varez Ward on him, if possible.
I’m concerned that Duke’s guards will shoot right over AJ. Scheyer, particularly.

Avoiding offensive fouls will be key on saturday. The refs love to get caught up in those Duke floor-slapping, charge-taking runs. Not only does Dexter have to watch himself, but James, Balbay, and anyone else who gets penetration going to the hole is going to have to be smart about it.

the beauty part is that at this point we’re playing with house money…
We’ve already accomplished all I’d realistically hoped for. Now we’re just at the dreaming stage… to go to the sweet sixteen with this year’s team would be fabulous, to do that going through a second-seeded Duke in Carolina? Sweet indeed… Well, I don’t expect it, but I’m sure going to be rooting for it.
And man, am I looking forward to next year. If Dogus will spend the entire off-season just shooting, and with the players we’ve got coming in, and with Pittman improving at the rate he’s been going… yikes!

Scipio, then how are we supposed to get GJ on the floor at all? May be he doesn’t need to be on the floor with that back. Someone’s going to have to guard Henderson, but I damn sure hate for it to be Ward. Too small to bother Henderson’s shot.
I like Pittman playing Thomas because Thomas poses virtually zero offensive threat. Pittman needs to be careful with how he hedges.
I have a feeling coach K won’t be able to help himself and he’ll stick with denying one pass away and pressure the basketball. If I’m right, Balbay is going to go berserk gettting to the bucket. I do worry about James and the careless way he handles the ball. We can’t afford to turn the ball over a bunch and negate our advantage on the glass.

Trips, it’ll be like Bill Self… he’ll do it for a half.
Barnes only has so many cards to play. If Pittman doesn’t stay on the floor (and, thinking about it, I don’t like his chances), there is no hope.
Although, I didn’t see much reaching close to the bucket. Arms straight up all around.
Barnes needs to tell James that he can shoot one three the first half. Doesn’t matter if he makes it or misses it. Just one.
(thoughtful interlude)
Man… the idea that Pittman needs to stay on the floor… after where he was at the start of the season? That’s about a light year of progress.

I kept praying for AJ to keep hitting in the hopes we could sucker Coach K into running pressure defense.
Varez Ward sees the floor better than Doge in the half court, though Doge sees things better on the drive. We might have three point guards next year, not to mention, five guards for two spots.

Basically, Texas should defend Duke in exactly the opposite way that they defended Minnesota.
Get out there and pressure Scheyer for 94 feet. It’s driving me crazy to watch teams that know he’s never played PG before let him bring the ball up uncontested and get them into their offense with no resistance.
RansomStoddard said:

Yeah, any matchup of Gary Johnson on a human being is bad for us. He is just awful. And I have a pretty good feeling that Coach K can figure out how to defend us.

Seeing Dex trying to double eight feet above the 3-point line is painful … watching a guard split said double and end up with what is, in effect, a 4-on-3 mini-break is even worse. We also have an inconsistent full-court trap; it’s fine to want to pressure the ball, but let’s just use Ward, the Doge and maybe a little Harrison Smith to harass a guy the length of the floor, rather than running a trap that has too often put us in a bind defensively.
The General said:
March 20th, 2009 at 6:31 am
We don’t commit to the trap all the way. We wait a second, think about it and then come over.
It either needs to be token to eat shot clock or it needs to be balls to the wall to apply pressure and force turnovers.

One thing about this matchup: I’ve never seen Duke play a sagging m2m. They always like to extend pressure and deny the wings. This is a bad D against us. It will allow Doge, Varez, DJ and Mase to drive and it will open up the lane for Dex. I heard that Duke did play some zone against Carolina. Maybe they will pull that out for us. I am curious to see what coach Kjaskdflajsdl does against us. If they extend pressure like they like to, Dex will have a huge night.
Conversely, we may have to play some zone to protect Dex. We have to hope Scheyer and Henderson are cold from deep.
We do have a puncher’s chance. Like Bob said, it is amazing that what we do in this game is likely dictated by what’s best to keep Dex on the floor. Who would have guessed that?
Texoz said:
March 20th, 2009 at 6:44 am
AJ’s playing his last games as a Horn and he’s definitely stepping up.
This could be Atchley’s last game as a basketball player. That’s just guessing on my part, but I wonder if he wants to keep playing if he can’t do the NBA.
I hope he sleeps well tonight and dreams of his play from last year. A 10 to 15 point output from him would go a long way toward helping UT on Saturday. Dexter might get in early foul trouble and Atchley will end up with more than 10 minutes (from last night).
Hell, I must be dreaming. Atchley clanked his first FT yesterday like he’d forgotten how to shoot the ball. For his sake, I hope he finishes his UT career on a high note.

I think we gotta be multiple on defense. Junk, m2m, timely zones, etc… Make Schuyer adjust, and force tough decisions on Duke, like whether or not to keep Zoubek (poor man’s Serge Zwicker/rich man’s Matt Hill) on the floor, since he has zero value against a zone defense, as opposed to Singler.
I also think a little 2 man game post entry with AJ and Dex would be nice, but now I’m getting greedy.

Guard Gerald Henderson with Gary Johnson? No way, Gary is too slow. Put Ward or Mason on Henderson. They will be quick enough to stay in front of him (usually) and can put their hands in front of his eyes when he shoots outside.
Nice (super quick) hook off the board from the right side of the lane by Dex. I’d like to see a lot more of that. Nice one handed tip for a bucket by Dex.
Dex was huge in the first half when the horns were hurting for points. Tubby focused more on stopping Dex in the second half (including playing some zone). This made it easier for Abrams to get shots outside.
It would be nice to get the ball to Damion at the high post. He can sky for the jumper (which he hits well from that range). Or, he can fake the jumper, take one dribble and jam it. Or, he can fake the drive and disk to Dex.
If I were coach K, I would play a box and one (the one on Abrams, of course) D. Duke will certainly make it tough to enter the ball to Dex.
Before the game, a few Minnesota fans expressed fear of Dex. It turned out that Dex put Ralph Sampson III out of the game with an inadvertant elbow. Blake Griffin knows how Sampson feels.
Don’t know how Barnes is going to protect Dex on D but Barnes needs to figure it out.

steve, AJ doesn’t always pass well into the post. see first (or 2nd possesion) last night.
we can expect to see one or all of Damo, GJ and Doge to foul out on charging calls alone, given how well Duke plays for that (and refs propensity to give them a few extras for good measure). K will have his players suckering james to drive and they will be a floppin.

and you’d think with him being best buddy/roomie with Dex would have him looking forward to some Hakeem/Maxwell feed the post and kick out action. his size/length makes it tough though in general to feed the post (no pun intended).
The General said:

The real problem is that the Barnes routine has never, in eleven years, taught anyone the fundamentals of post entry. You either know when you got here (Varez, Royal, Ivan Wagner) or you don’t (DJA, AJ, Mason) and we watch you looking off post men with position for your career.

I actually like AJ in the ballscreen game when he’s not guarded by a world beater on defense. Teams pay so much attention to him and give so much respect to his J that it opens up the weakside for easy buckets if he’s willing to kick it over.
