Dexter Pittman is a man

Posted by The General on March 12th, 2009 under Basketball

Dexter’s all grows up and he’s all grows up and he’s all grows up. Sexy Dexy put the Horns on his back and muscled them to a win over KSU with 19 points and 20 boards on 8-12 from the field, 3-6 from the line, and 4 big blocks. Texas won a physical contest against the Wildcats with big contributions from Varez Ward (9 points, 3 boards, and 2 blocks) and Clint Chapman (9 points). It was a damn good thing Varez and Clint showed up because Damian James, Gary Johnson, and AJ Abrams combined for 15 points.

Varez Ward needs to bring the Sam Cassell Testicle Dance to Big XII country, because the kid is absolutely fearless. After languishing on the bench and in Rick Barnes’ dog house for two weeks, Varez came in and fearlessly attacked the basket when AJ went to the bench with foul trouble. If Varez can stay out of Rick’s dog house, he can be the player we though Justin Mason would be this year.

Varez has ginormous huevos like Sam I Am

With superior play from Dexter and good supporting roles from guys off the bench, this team just needs AJ and Damian to not shit the bed. Gary Johnson has lost his rhythm in the midrange game, and judging by a few glimpses of him jumping, his ankle is hurting him when he tries to get off the ground.

Baylor should feel like a Swedish massage after the brawl against K State. It will be interesting to see what Dexter has left in the tank, because I did not think we would see a career high in minutes (34) in the second game of the back to back. I did not think Dex had it in him. I don’t think Dexter thought he had it in him. We were both wrong.

The good news is that AJ and Damian played relatively low minutes tonight, and Baylor’s front court is weak enough that Damian should be able to handle the rebounding duties and give Big Dex a breather. After watching both Baylor games, I find it hard to believe they have it in them to beat us on what will also be their third straight day of basketball.

Here is Trips Right’s excellent Baylor Preveiw

  1. Nice Swingers reference.

Let’s hope this late season explosion continues from Sexy Dexy, and is a harbinger of next season.

    Hook ‘em!

I hope our chances of beating anyone don’t go thru James

  3. This three game run is a perfect test for Dex.

Going this many minutes back-to-back-to-back lets him know how far he has come, and how far he has to go to get ready for next year and the NBA.

  4. Dex may be a man, but is he forty!!

Is it just me, or do Johnson’s and James’ shots get less accurate the closer they get to the basket?

I hope we haven’t depleted Sexy’s energy reserves.

  6. I’m always amused when Damion and Gary fade away irrespective of who is covering them or how close the defender is. Both of them shoot about 18% on that shot on the season.

  7. Not sure if you guys have watched either of these Baylor wins, but apparently they played a zone against Nebraska and they absolutely did today.

And while it shouldn’t be effective, if you can’t get the ball in the middle and keep settling for outside shots it invariably will. I gotta think we’re gonna see AJ let em fly tomorrow – for better or worse…

  8. The sleeper has awoken.

  9. Hawkman vs. Dexter Pittman.

    who wins?

“Going this many minutes back-to-back-to-back lets him know how far he has come, and how far he has to go to get ready for next year and the NBA”
I hope that Dex does well in the NBA camps but if he does someone will take a shot at him in the second round maybe late first round.
Dex I hope will be back for next year because he will make the 2-3 kids coming in that much better with and In-Out passing game.
How about Dex vs. Godzilla, Dex has softer hands then zilla let alone more speed.

  11. I think Pittman could take Mini-Ditka in open warfare.

  12. Feed Big Dex!!!

    Dunk everything in as well.

  13. Also, I hope Barnes gives Ward the GREEN LIGHT as far as shooting goes.

I don’t think Ward is effective when he is tenetive with trying to score.

When Ward is aggressive and fearless with trying to score, I think he much more effective.

I’d give Ward the freedom to make mistakes if he is going 100% effort.

  14. I think Ward has the green light to drive and do what he wants. Early in the shot clock three pointers is what allegedly got him in trouble.

I think it was shooting any three pointers at all, because I have seen Barnes give Vares the scowl on a wide open three pointer with about 6 seconds left on the shot clock.

Dexter maybe sexy for a hornfan (that is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose), but he sure as hell is not a go to guy and probably never will be. It is true that Dex has soft hands for a big man, but his footwork is nothing to write home about. He has slow and somewhat clumsy feet which does not allow him to fully exploit those soft hands of his.

In a sense, he also has the problem of being a tweener. Maybe not sizewise, but in the manner of his play. He is a passive, finesse big man without the quicks or the motor to consistently dominate a game. Anyone else notice how many gimme buckets big Dex clanks because he is either unable or unwilling to go up strong and aggressive. This characteristic of Dex’s play will probably never change. I am afraid that Dex’s massive potential will always tempt Hornfans, but will also always dissappoint and leave Hornfans with an empty feeling in the end, typically after a close loss.

  16. Surround Dex Pittman with any 3 of the following and he’d average 18 points per game on 12 field goal attempts: Joey Wright, Lance Blanks, Brandon Mouton, TJ Ford, Jordan Hamilton, Avery Bradley, Dogus Balbay, Jai Lucas, Travis Mays, Luke Axtel, Daniel Gibson…

Shaggy, as far as I’m concerned, Dex already has done more with what he has than Kris Clack, whom I thought was one huge McDonald’s A-A vat of untapped potential.

  18. What can we expect from Dex next season?

It’s fair to believe that Dex would be more effective with a better surrounding cast, players that can actually shoot the ball, and a better PG play, but I do not believe that Dex will ever be a truly dominant player. His play is just too passive and he lacks a killer instinct, and don’t forget, Dex will always be a liability on the defensive side of the ball. I suspect that he will never be more than an effective role player. But on the plus side, I have noticed that he seems, surprisingly, to play above expectations against better competition and big men his own size. But then on the other hand, he also consistently fails to dominate lesser players, which his physical advantages suggests he should dominate and there are more of those in college basketball than the former. Aside from his slow feet and reaction time, Dex’s biggest problem is probably just his good natured and laid back attitude, and I just do not see how you can fix a basic nature of his personality. He just does not seem to play the game with the same kind of urgency as say a Damian James does, and I doubt if he ever will.

By the way, being better than Kris Clack or should I say, Kris Clank, is not really much of a compliment. While Kris had NBA level athleticism, he also shot the ball with as much touch as a man with hands of stone. He was sort of like a Balbay who believes he can actually shoot the ball and no matter how much he clanked the ball off the rim, Kris’s confidence never seemed to suffer.

Shag Ag. “Dexter maybe sexy for a hornfan (that is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose), but he sure as hell is not a go to guy and probably never will be.”

Sheep may be sexy for ag.fans(that is in the eye of the beholder,I suppose)but Pittman will not have to be the go to guy. Yet Pittman will still be a double-double man every game next year, if he decides to come back.
Dex has good footwork if you read the late Pete Newells camp notes and watch what he does to control his man in the paint. Dex has not even come close to his ceiling. Still has a long way to go to reach it. He plays better with NBA size guys due to his size and half of his fouls are fouls that refs see a 4 or 5 going away from Dex after light contact. If Dex comes back he will dominate just because the ref will have seen him play this year and not call all the tacky calls made on Dex.
Dex is just starting to play BB at a higher level as he learns to use the boards to assist his play just like when you were a little shaggy guy did you piss in the toilet all the time, maybe not but you just kept trying. Hope you mastered it.

Balbay will master the 13-15ft shot by start of conference add the talent coming in and returning players even if Damion goes, UT will give everyone a run for their money all the way to the last 4 games of the season.

Today reminded me why I love this tournament so much. A good friend of mine mentioned to me that college basketball is the great equalizer of all athletic endeavors. At least of the sports we care about. He’s right.

Unless you’re completely retarded, you know precisely what I meant. The closest any Big 12 team has gotten to winning the infamous Fuller Cup is the 2007 Texas squad. I can’t remember a team being that horribly undisciplined as a whole aside from the insane OU teams of the 80’s. That’s not

I suppose anyone could be your “favorite Longhorn basketball player” but Ford did more than just about anyone…although Durant is clearly better. Ford’s supporting cast was better than Durant’s in his sophomore year. Durant’s had more talent (Augustin, James, Abrams) but Ford’s was more developed (Boddicker, Ivey, Mouton, Thomas) and had worked with him for

This notion of Hamilton as being a disaster area on defense is all a bit much. He rebounds extremely well which, if it wasn’t obvious, is extremely important in this game since it secures possession of the basketball. Winning in basketball is achieved through the scoring of baskets and it’s necessary to possess the basketball

I posted earlier about how Collins’ effort just crippled Kansas today, but what amazed me the most was his complete inability to stay in front of his man on defense. UNI got a LOT of good looks out of penetration/pass after one of UNI’s modestly gifted athletes blew right by Sherron. The best

As disappointed as I was in last year’s opening weekend of March Madness, this one is exceeding all expectations. Putting aside the fact that my bracket now resembles Kabul after the Taliban rolled through in ‘96 – a map of ordered failure –
