So Georgia Offered to Double Jeff Capel’s Salary

Posted by Trips Right on March 6th, 2009 under Basketball

The story went public in the Tulsa World News on Wednesday. GeorgiaSports blog has a good discussion on the situation. My question is what happens when the heavy hitters from the ACC like Virginia and perhaps Maryland jump into the fray? I doubt a football school like Oklahoma, in the context of a global financial crisis, can afford to getting in a bidding war with traditional basketball schools.

Sure, the Sooners are getting two McDonald’s All-Americans in Tommie Mason-Griffin and Keith Gallon, but neither is a player of the year candidate that a team can hang its hat on. Texas will be salty and Kansas is Kansas. Capel is an ACC kid at heart. Carolinians have forgiven Capel for costing Duke a National Championship.

Two million can buy a lot of Kid -N- Play fades.

The barbarians are certainly at the gates and Mr. and Mrs. Griffin should be proud of Joe Castiglione for not retaliating. We’ll see.

  1. Far better basketball programs for sure, but could and would UVA and Maryland put up $2M or more?

I would think so. Pretty sure they make the money.

“the context of a global financial crisis”

The phrase is “In This Economy”(tm)

Missouri will be facing the same thing when Bama and/or Georgia come looking for a coach too. While not traditional basketball powers they don’t like to lose in any sport and defintiely have the athletic department revenues generated by football to lure Mike Anderson out of Columbia

Still a lot of oil & gas money. Oklahoma can afford the pay, question is will Capel think about the half-full (generous estimate) stands he had for most of the season and want to go somewhere the fan support is better. Probably only a matter of time before he leaves, but I wouldn’t discount the theory he waits for something better.

Could someone explain the Joe Castiglione reference to me?

Nevermind, googled it. I’m originally from New England, where a different Joe Castiglione is famous as the radio play-by-play guy for the Boston Red Sox. I couldn’t figure out what he had to do with this story.

They offered Capel that money, why?

  9. He took OU (not exactly a traditional basketball powerhouse) from life support to a Final Four contender in three years. Couple that with an overzealous AD willing to pay anything to get the same kind of results.

  10. sl xpress said:

    March 7th, 2009 at 11:46 am

I was told Georgia will go as high as $2.8 million to get Capel.

    And the phrase is TEOTWAWKI.

  11. sl xpress said:

Oh, would anyone else find it entertaining to watch OU’s recruiting class fall apart a 2nd time?

  12. Last year both OU and Georgia brought in about 6.5 million in basketball revenue — but Georgia cleared 3.5 million, while OU had more expenses and only cleared 1 million.

Wonder if OU would think it would be cost effective to match such an offer.

  13. BevosBoss said:

    March 7th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

With what he has coming back and the quality of his 2009 recruiting class, Capel would be an absolute fool to take any of those jobs mentioned! Capel’s no fool. This is nothing more than wishful thinking for some who fear good competition.

  14. Umm Gallon is okay, and TMG is nice, but you’re nuts to think ou will be anywhere near as good without Griffin. And there’s a solid chance that Warren leaves early.

Double your salary and move out of Norman. What’s not to like?

I have heard 3.6 million figure mentioned in Chicago two days ago. With all the extras thrown in??
Griffin goes, Willie has people whispering in his ear that it time to fly the coop.
Gallon is almost OK. TMG is for real.
    Is Capel listening ?

Virginia’s athletic department is anything but big time.

The Georgia story isn’t new, it’s been around all season.

I think eventually we will lose him, but not to an also-ran, even if it’s ACC. He’s building something that’s really working and pretty big. My money says he sticks around until a top tier ACC comes calling. But, when that happens he goes. 2-3 more years.

  18. Bob in Houston said:

    March 8th, 2009 at 7:23 pm

Top? It ain’t gonna be UNC. You mean like Duke? Johnny Dawkins took the Stanford job so that when K hangs it up, he’d have HC on his resume.

I suppose he’d have a shot at it, but that’s not really my point. That is, what do you consider a top-tier ACC job? Both Virginia (not a top-tier job) and Maryland (probably so) have new arenas and a ton of seats to fill.

If Maryland calls, I think Capel would listen hard.

  19. NorthDallasSooner said:

I would consider Maryland, historically, a top third ACC job, yeah. UNC and Duke better. After that?

Yeah your right, penders teams were at least fun to watch play. Barnes offense is pretty bad not as bad as Tom’s but its all relative to who is watching the worst offense in Texas history.

Our hoops team is the basketball version of Major League.

    Jake Taylor = Damion James
    Pedro Cerrano = Dexter Pittman
Willie Mays Hays = Avery Bradley
    Roger Dorn = Justin Mason
Isuro Tanaka (Major League II) = Dogus Balbay
Rube Baker (Major Leauge II) = Jordan Hamilton

If Craig Way starts drinking whiskey during the broadcasts, it’ll complete the analogy.

I don’t think McCoy played anywhere near the level of Suh and the numbers make it clear that he did not. Suh had twice as many tackles (77-31), sacks (11-5) and nearly tackles for loss (22-14.5). Suh also broke up 10 passes, if he gets stonewalled on the rush he doesn’t allow it to take

EP, I get your point, but I don’t think the fact that Texas hasn’t won a tourney came as an underdog doesn’t support it. Teams are favored because they are better. The odds that they win are greater than those who are not favored. It’s not like Texas goes into games with a secret weapon

I don’t think it’s a case of RB not being able to coach, or doing a poor job of coaching. If you read the entirety of Katz’ blog post, he clearly sounds like a coaching searching for answers — answers that come in the form of players contributing, doing what they are coached to do.

I don’t think we have to win the SEC tourny necessarily. If we make it to the SEC Tourny championship game and have won about 20 games, I would say a tourny bid would look likely. But that is a pretty big task. I know no one cares about the NIT, but that wouldnt be
