Texas/Oklahoma Basketball Post-Game

Posted by Scipio Tex on February 21st, 2009 under Basketball

That was wild. I guess Vegas knows what they’re doing, after all.

Texas has now beaten Oklahoma 7 of the last 8; 12 of the last 16.

Dexter Pittman should be in Indianapolis at the combine fighting for first round money at LT. Or appearing in the next Jean-Claude Van Damme action vehicle, for he possesses the Dim Mak. The game turned when, after playing some hellacious defense on Blake, Dexter gently (and inadvertently) brushed his hand across Griffin’s face in the first half.

Sexy Dexy’s sasquatch paw gave the 6-10 250 pound Griffin a severe concussion, an aneurysm, a nose bleed, the inability to look at light without a trainer’s hand cupped over his brow, the inabilty to see magenta in all of its forms, covered him with a distinct beef jerky smell, and gave him the confused stare of a banjo strumming mongoloid at an Edna, OK gas station.

The theater on the OU bench throughout the game was amusing.

Blake, you are severely injured! Don’t look at the scoreboard lights! They are searing your concussed retinas! But, but I must! Put me in! No Griffin, Pittman will give you another aneurysm via hamfingers across the bridge of your nose!

Seriously, I hope Blake is OK. He should be fine. And remind me never to piss of Dexter Pittman. Dude needs to go find the Kumite.

Willie Warren destroyed us. In every way. Like, with cramps in his calf and whatnot. He is sick. He gave a great preview of why OU will be pretty good next year even without Blake Griffin. He and Juan Patillo should form a quality combo.

Austin Johnson continues to be one of the best sorry players in college basketball. He’s pretty good. But kind of terrible. I really can’t make sense of him. His Delta Chi pledge name is now…Platypus.

There is a great learning from this game for Oklahoma – specifically, they have a better basketball team when they don’t force Griffin as a weapon. Truthfully, I hope Caple missed it.

There was learning for us as well: Damion James proved again why he’s a very good college 4. He’s too quick for big guys, but he’s strong enough to finish and bang inside. We need to drop all pretense that he’s a 3 and let him be what he is – NBA projections be damned. I hope he does come back and I hope we start him in a DDM offense featuring a two-headed Lucas/Dogus point, Bradley, Hamilton, James, Pittman. I would fear only a Boeheimian zone and we would rock.

AJ Abrams was spectacular in the second half, making big shot after big shot. His game was Biblical: trials, tribulation, redemption, desert wandering, locusts, honey, salvation. Rest well tonight, Abrams-child. Thou hast freed thy people. Dude will step up and take the big shot time after time. Nice to see it fall when it mattered most.

Dogus flashed his ability and athleticism once again. He didn’t play a perfect game, but his ability to attack the rim and create shots for others is not inconsiderable. 10 points, 8 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 turnovers – that’s a way to fill up the stat sheet in Jason Kidd-like fashion. I’ll take that to the bank all day, even if it is a wheelbarrow of Turkish lira.

And just like that, hope is reborn, we’ve guaranteed ourselves an invitation to the Big March Sock Hop, and we’re all indulging insane fanatasies of how we’ll advance past the first round as a 8/9 seed.

This is why sports are fun.

Abrams was the shit in the last seven minutes. Both teams leave this game feeling good about themselves.

Probably the worst coached half of a game in Barnes’ career. Completely got away in the second half from what was working in the first half: pound the ball inside.

And what does Mason bring to the table? If I have to see him loaf down the court on a breakaway fast break, or get beat like a dog because he is standing around on defense, I swear I’m going to ruin my big screen.

Great win and I’m glad we didn’t storm the court.

  3. NorthDallas:

Agreed. Capel has to feel great about how Warren and Crocker stepped up.

Your rosy optimism is fuel for my spirit.

Just read on ESPN that Abrams scored 18 of your last 20 points and 16 in a row. Damn.

  5. Big Dex shows the nation how to stop Griffin. Who knew you could knock him senseless by brushing a couple of fingers across his nose?

I guess losing to the Horns pretty well assures OU of a number one seed and the Naismith Award.

  6. A Texas Chili Parlour post-game margarita and pork chop never tasted so good.

    Fun game.

  7. Very nicely done. You didn’t disappoint.

  8. It wasnt Pittman that caused the concussion. ESPN showed the play after the game.Chapman threw an elbow in transition down the court.

  11. our guards cannot make an entry pass, at all. especially abrams; sexy dexy had position all night and multiple mismatches but i guess when you’re 5′8″ like abrams, its tough to pass around a normal 6′3″ guard. he made up for it at the end but come on. dex could have had 10 more easy points. james somehow fills the stat sheet when looking like garbage. if that makes sense.

  13. We’ve got four tough games left.
    Texas Tech
    at OK State
    Baylor
    at KU

I don’t know if we guaranteed the invite just yet. We need to win two of the next three games because I would hate to lose 2 of the next 3 then lose the last game against Kansas in KU.

That would give us an 8-8 conference record and a poor finish to the season. Ending on a sour note like that might get us un-invited. 9-7 would bea sure thing. We definitely don’t want to go to KU needing a win to get in.

4 tough games left? beating tech is about as difficult as beating a girls basketball team in dallas with “special” players on it by a score of 100-0.

  15. Texoz:

I’ve got Tech pencilled in as an automatic win. We then need to split OSU/Baylor to get in. We have a 7.3% chance of beating KU in Lawrence.

I also think it’s not insane to imagine that we could get in at 8-8 in conference. Texas basketball is more respected nationally than it is locally.

  16. Last night’s win obviously helped a ton, scip. That one will help y’all stay out of that dreaded 7/8 seed. Then if y’all can win at least one in OKC, you should be in good shape.

    ponderos… depends on which one. If it’s a 5-12 win, that’s not enough — it’s just a place-holder.

  18. dreaded 8-9, you mean.

Scip, I am talking about a 5-12 game in the B12 tournament. Beating Colorado or Tech, if that is the first game, is not going to impress the selection committee.

  20. got it.

That said, I’m not sure this team would beat those other two. They would lose Abrams and let him go 7-15 on 3s and the Abrams team played better

10 weeks ago, Oregon played in the Rose Bowl as Pac 10 champions. Since their loss to Ohio State, the program has been in some kind of bizzaro parallel universe where every headline concerns a player arrest, a firing, or now a resignation.

    Prescient comment, Doc.

I think we learned today that no team is really a mirror image of Missouri, even if Clemson is about as close as it gets. Unless you have significantly better/more talented athletes, if you try to run with the Tigers, you will lose. This team is so much fun to watch in games

Good to see that Tom Penders still believes in the weave offense. Maryland finally figured out that if you pass quickly, the middle is always open.

Doc, the turnovers seemed to do the trick – there were great big chunks of time when Mizzou didn’t even have to get into a half court offense.

Great to see Ramsey have such a good game and pretty stifle Booker. As Euclid said during the game, even when Mizzou doesn’t play well

“Also because those other teams gave great effort almost every game. This team’s effort was questionable. Dumb and lazy, not a good combo…..”

This is what made this season so bizarre for me. This has never been a problem for Barnes’ teams. But I actually questioned this team’s heart and desire to play together

Travis Ford spent the 2nd half channeling his inner Rick Barnes — lot’s of standing around on offense while one player tries to generate something off a ball screen — then taking a forced shot.

So the Big 12 goes 5-2 in Round One.

  • skymonkeyhorn commented on the blog post Barnes worst team   8 hours, 30 minutes ago

This is the worst coached team ever in Barnes era. Period.
Worst defense over the whole season,
Offense sucked big time and the bench coaching was horrible, ransom’s attitude was better then the coach’s overall this season.
Trips write up pre and post better then the game plan and O schemes.

advertisers think they will probably get some deals for the additional 32 games that would be added. The feeling is that an ESPN would disount rates somewhat, since they already have a dual revenue stream — advertising dollars and subscription fees.

It’s all about content for ESPN — even mediocre content.

So far on Day Two, no buzzer beaters, but there was the obligatory #12 over #5 with Cornell thumping Temple 78-65, but the Ivy League school was everyone’s “inside” pick for an upset. Still the day hasn’t come close to generating the action that Thursday had.

I wasn’t trying to say they quit. They just didn’t play hard a lot of the time. Lazy = lack of effort. Example, our transition defense was about 75% effort and 25% stupidity. We loafed down court a lot. The kids didn’t like to lose so they would fight back,

  • Patrick Bateman commented on the blog post Barnes worst team   11 hours, 23 minutes ago

This the most disappointing team because our talent level is higher than those others.

The DGib/Buckman team was the least talented, barely, after the injury to LaMarcus and Tucker’s suspension.

Last year’s team was the hardest to watch. Just watching AJ Abrams, who I don’t hate as much as most, run around like a
