Texas Longhorns Football: Spring Roster Released

Posted by HenryJames on February 19th, 2009 under Football

The spring football roster is up at the Texas sports website. It’s not much for the typical football fan suffering withdrawals, but I use it for three things. Attrition, heights/weights and position changes.

Attrition

None at this point. Not naming any names, but…Montre Webber? Still there. Philip Payne? Still there. D.J. Monroe? Still there. Make no mistake about it. There will be attrition. Just not yet.

Heights/weights

We get our first glimpse at the somewhat accurate measurements for the early enrollees. Heights will only be settled definitively for the lucky few that attend the NFL combine.

Tariq Allen 6′2″ 235
Thomas Ashcraft 6′5″ 315
Marcus Davis 6′1″ 185
Dominique Jones 6′3″ 240
Kyle Kriegel 6′5″ 262
Alex Okafor 6′4″ 240
Kenny Vaccaro 6′1″ 195
Mason Walters 6′6″ 295

Nolan Brewster is now listed at 210 pounds, and I see a change to linebacker in his future.

Redshirt freshman tackle Mark Buchanan is now 295 pounds. His classmate Luke Poehlmann is only listed at 257. Care to make a guess which one sees the field first?

Will Poehlmann suffer a similar fate as Samson for cutting his mullet?

Position changes

Dravannti Johnson is now a defensive end. He’s a tweener, so it was either a big but slow linebacker or an undersized but fast defensive end. The conference we play in made that decision easy.

D.J. Grant is now a tight end. Good. As long as we don’t do something stupid like make him try to block defensive ends. Unless it’s Dravannti Johnson in practice.

Aundre McGaskey and Greg Smith are now listed as offensive tackles. We may be throwing bodies at the position at this point, but I’m interested to see what McGaskey can do.

Did I miss anything?

  1. Hales is now wearing number 6 and Humphrey is wearing 99. That almost certainly means Hales will score a walk off BCS td next year and Humphrey will be first team all conference. There are no holes in that logic . None.

  2. McGaskey was a RT from the day he signed. It was the first thing that sprung to mind when I saw him.

  3. This post is nothing without CallKevin’s input.

  4. My new favorite is Luciano Martinez, 5′11 265lb DT from Monterrey, Mexico. It would be awesome if he wore a lucha libre mask.

$10 says that’s just an overweight, mustachioed Ron Weaver/McKelvey back for another shot at football glory.

  6. …..”$10 says that’s just an overweight, mustachioed Ron Weaver/McKelvey back for another shot at football glory.”

    Or maybe Jimmy Hoffa.

  7. i bet hoffa was bigger than 265. probably not now, though.

  8. I’m thrilled they deemed El Luciano worthy of a scholarship.

Don’t tell me the lack of asterisk is a typo. I want to believe.

    ¡hola! ¿dónde está la biblioteca?

  10. i noticed that jc, and intended to comment, but my machine locked up and had to go through a long reboot cycle. vista is the hands-down sorriest operating system ever thrown up, and that is saying something.

also noted that cameron yoe ol, nick zajicek, is shown sans asterick. no write up on him, though, so i assume the missing asterick is another typo. [or would it be 'untypo' since the error was actually 'not typing'?]

I saw Kenny Vaccaro today. He looked every bit of 6′1″ 195.

Also, Tariq allen is big for a freshman.

Brewster looked absolutely lost to me both when in on defense and on STs. Moving to LB would be the logical next move to try and salvage something of the situation. I hate judging a kid too harshly who is playing that early in his career, but I don’t see him as a contributor. Ever.

“His classmate Luke Poehlmann is only listed at 257.”

I can have him looking like Hulk Hogan by August..

  16. mmmmm….Deca-Durabolin…mmmmm……

  17. Those wanting more of Victor Mature (Samson in the illustration) can enjoy a self-caricature in 1966’s “After the Fox” (with Peter Sellers, dir. Vittorio De Sica).

That, or ask to borrow Scipio’s stash of “Hollywood Hunk” magazine.

    Yeah, what Brandon said..

  20. “That, or ask to borrow Scipio’s stash of “Hollywood Hunk” magazine”

Parlin, do you like movies about gladiators?

  21. I bet La Joya HS kicked ass in Mexico 5A.

  22. I think some of the weights on that roster are updated, some are not. Website is REALLY BAD about this sissue. Some of the secrecy Mack wraps around his team I understand; some I do not.

I have thought since August that Brewster NEEDED to be a LBer. He’s buried at safety . . . we shall see.

Mitchell is now an OG. He was Hix’s backup last year, but an OG the year before. Backup center/guard (other than Snow) is unproven, though I don’t think it’s a weakness.

Howard still listed at TE. He’ll never surface at that spot; actually, I doubt he would anywhere else.

I like Johnson as a DE, Grant as a TE, and I think McGaskey (or maybe Buchanan) at OT will begin to look like future starter material.

  23. “I think McGaskey (or maybe Buchanan) at OT will begin to look like future starter material.”

They’d better, unless you want to see Tray Allen starting at tackle in 2010.

    HJ or others,

I never heard anything regarding why Vondrell didn’t see the field at the Fiesta Bowl. I know he isn’t a gamebreaker, but he ran hard all year and could have helped us.

    Any ideas???

I found it interesting that nothing was mentioned about the safety battle involving Scott and the possibility of moving Aaron Williams to safety to get the four best players on the field.

The move of Kindle to DE opens up a lot of playing time for Keenan Robinson who I can’t wait to see.

DT remains a major concern. No mention of Jarvis is extremely troubling and this is starting to smell like Marco Martin.

They grow ‘em big in Texas. I am suffering from withdrawal.I am in a place right now where football is seen as an exotic pasttime. To hell with that. Simply put, if you don’t have football in your life your not really living. Bring on Colt, bring on Tebow; I miss ‘em already!

    Samson had a mullet?

  28. You people making fun of Samson had better be careful! Remember what he did to those Philadelphians–you know, those mean sumbitches? He took and jabbed ‘em in the ass with a bone!

  29. Art,

He was having trouble in pass protection.

  30. I noticed Neale Tweedie is a grad assistant. I guess he can drop passes up in the pressbox now.

    J.R.69,
If you’re free on Sunday I’d like you to speak to my congregation. If only Samson had slain the Philadelphians with the jaw bone of a Stoops, the world would be an infinitely better place.
Oops, gotta go. I’m “noodling” up on Texoma this afternoon with the Pope, Woody Allen and the ghost of Yasser Arafat..

  32. bateshorn,

Tweedie was Greg Smith’s personal coach in ‘08.

  33. Billy Graham:

Sorry, can’t make it….me and Hedy Lamarr are hooking up to, umm, talk about radar, and stuff.

    Maybe another time.

  34. Some dude on Orangebloods says that DJ Grant is 220 right now and will be up to 235 by the time the season starts.

With Mad Dog all things are possible.

  35. He knows DJ and that’s legit info.

If DJ can play @ 230, we’re in business.

  36. you and a heady lamarr are gonna do WHAT?

  37. good news on dj.

  38. DJ Grant at 220 is false.

I think your overall point is a good one. Barnes is a “system” guy especially defensively, which plays into how he overall plays the game. He wants to play a high pressure, overplay man2man scheme predicated on effort, good technique and overall quickness. Similar to Duke, but even Coach K (in fairness
