Around The Big 12 Blogosphere

Posted by Scipio Tex on February 13th, 2009 under Basketball, Football, Recruiting

Kansas

KU expert Hiphopopotamus gives us his Big 12 Basketball Power Rankings. I have no arguments and I admire his delusional optimism in ranking us ahead of a blistering hot KSU squad.

A&M

Our friends at Spence Park Soapbox are writing material well beyond the typical blog fodder.

The Mayor wrote a brilliant little piece on attrition and new coaching staffs and its Machiavellian underpinnings. Machiavelli understood the Goodson Corollary, which states that some players are simply uncoachable ne’er-do-wells that must be publically destroyed for the good of the state. One of Sherman’s early mistakes was mentioning Goodson as his bell cow and the focus of his offense (and thus a de facto team leader) before really understanding that Goodson is a turd of the highest order. Von Miller cracking Goodson in his gold tooth was nothing less than God’s work.

If only he grasped team concepts as aggressively as a OSU hostesses’ breasts

The Aggies also muse over A&M’s future pipeline. Et tee yew Brute?

Some observations:

- 59 of their scholarship players are sophomores or freshmen. That’s the youth demography of Pakistan

- (tu) should be auto-saved into their spreadsheet for efficiency purposes, as it will be placed next to their top targets over the next six months

- I’ve already referenced the fact that the elite talent in the state inordinately rests in DFW this year and that’s never a good thing for the Aggies. They need to win some knockdown drag-outs with LSU and Arkansas for Houston and East Texas kids

Oklahoma

I found atlantasooner’s Recruiting Wrap-Up wildly optimistic in some areas and I don’t think he calls out marginal recruits as aggressively as we do, but I appreciate a different point of view. My short take is this: very nice defensive class for OU, very average offensive group. When your H-backs are your best graded offensive unit, some perspective is in order.

Jackie Shipp may go to the NFL. This less than two weeks after Jamarkus McFiction signs his letter of intent, citing Shipp as the primary reason for going to OU. This may just be an aggressive salary play by Shipp (which may even have Bob’s sanction to get him a raise) but his leaving would be tremendously amusing. It won’t be funny if they hire Jim Jeffcoat to replace him though.

Texas Tech

dedfischer reports how the Sand Aggies are keeping Bobby Petrino out of West Texas.

Missouri

Finally, Atomic Teeth ponders Missouri’s head basketball coach Mike Anderson’s interest in the Alabama job. I don’t see it – Missouri has a legitimate basketball history. Coaching basketball at Alabama is like coaching football at Indiana – what’s the appeal?

That aggy depth chart at DT would be even more brutal if we’d been able to convince Davis to switch his commit. As it is, not good.

    Scipio,

That’s one hell of a deadpan on the Petrino link.

  3. I loved atlantasooner’s whining about McFarland’s fifth star. He essentially posits that McFarland lost it because he picked OU over Texas. Vast left wing conspiracy, etc. Meh.

I wish we were as powerful as they think we are.

  4. So did we also arrange for John Chiles to lose his fifth star after he too played like shit in his all-star game? We’re so tricky.

  5. A testimonial of how it sux to be aggy (from the Pipeline):

“It is also easy to see why this team mustered 4 wins last year and why looking forward to the 2009-10 season feels like anticipating a Springsteen halftime show.”

  6. If I were an aggie that spreadsheet might push me to tears.

  7. The Ags so needed a site like that. It seems that the world of UT sports interweb musings is spread out and diversified over a few sites and the internet version of capitalism has improved the quality of each site and therefore the overall fan experience. The ags seem to have only texags, which is humorless to the core without the delusion or longhorn trolls. The delusion hurts the information seeking as well. I will spread the word to all ags about spence park soap box.

  8. “If I were an aggie that spreadsheet might push me to tears.”

Believe me, we all debated even putting it up. Delusion seems to sell better in our world.

Still, I’m eternally optimistic and a homer to the core. Most people work out every day to look good. I work out every day so I can live to be 127 and increase the odds of seeing an Aggie National Championship in my lifetime.

Feel free to drop by anytime, guys!

  9. I’m most concerned about OU’s JC OL. If they can get a starter out of that, they are in much better shape for next year than they would have been otherwise.

  10. dick:

You know texags isn’t that different from hornfans, orangebloods, aggieyell – any big fan site. Each site can be dominated by a vocal dumb minority while a silent majority just reads and lurks. And yearns for interesting stuff.

The SpenceParkSoapBox guys just need to decide whether they want to market themselves or not. It’s embarrassing to throw up a link of something you’ve written as it seems self-promotional, but think of your own perspective as a consumer of media: if someone links me up to quality opinion and humor, I feel hugely grateful. And if what someone linked sucks, I click, discern this in ten seconds, and then I never go back. No harm, no foul.

    Taylor:

First year JUCO OL starters are a dicey proposition at best. OU does a nice job of coaching OL up though, so we’ll see.

As long as they actually stay on campus, that is. Jerry Schmidt’s CMF summer boot camps have run off more people than the Janjaweed.

  12. ctex80,
    Whining about McFarland?
I think the main point that I was trying to make is that I was unable to get a reasonable explanation from anyone at Rivals as to why McFarland dropped. He got props during US Army practices and certainly didn’t play badly in that game. I’ll give you he wasn’t dominating like Gerald McCoy, but again I have seen anything close to an objective reason why he dropped.
Probably being paranoid but his drop coincided with his verbal to OU over UT.
The bigger injustice was with Ronnell Lewis that kid is going to be a huge star at OU.

Totally did not know ou and aggy had a BC type site. Of course, my job caught on that BC is a “blog” and blocked it. I can still get to the Tech site, though… go figure.

Anyways, glad to see smart talk about sports expanding. It’ll be good to keep up with how Big 12 sports in general are doing while at work. It’s not Texas talk, but it will tide me over until August when I go back to grad school and can access any dang site I want. :-)

  14. We’re still trying to work our way up from snide to pithy.

  15. Sasha:

SPSB will develop its own identity, but I agree that a BC-type Aggie website is long overdue for the very reason you cite: smart sports talk is sorely lacking and there’s a huge untapped audience for it.

What are you going to study?

  16. Atlantasooner,

I don’t know who you talked to at Rivals regarding the loss but I have spoken to someone and it was not about the All star game, but rather the entire senior season that was the cause. I also hail from Lufkin and many there who have no OU or UT ties told me that he really had a dissapointing senior season. He’s a very good player and may turn out to be great but not worthy of 5 stars according to every unbiased person I have spoken to.

    Scip,

Sorry for the late response. Fell asleep right after my work out.

I’ll be in law school. Not sure where, yet. Still waiting to hear back from a few schools.

  18. Sasha:

A profession we sorely need more of. Seriously, congrats. I’m jealous of your two years back in college.
