Texas picked up 5 more commitments today (at least publicly). There are at least a couple that are silent commits. Just be patient. Here are the players we brought in.

LB Aaron Benson, Cedar Hill

Benson held solid offers from OU, LSU, Nebraska and TCU before picking up one from Texas this today. He’s going to commit to Texas sooner than later. Watched him against Allen in the playoffs. Solid frame, great motor and can run.

DB Carrington Byndom, Lufkin

When was the last time you heard a Lufkin guy get offered by Stanford? Byndom is that guy, and he picked up one from Texas as well. He plays safety for Lufkin, but his thin frame probably means he’s a corner at the next level.

DT De’Aires Cotton, Alief Taylor

Cotton committed to Texas and had already been offered by OU, A&M, Oklahoma State and Nebraska. There is no film up of Cotton on either Rivals or Scout so I don’t know much about him. Supposedly not as athletic but more solidly built than Taylor Bible. His coach seems to think he can do more than he was asked to do last season.

WR Mike Davis, Dallas Skyline

Watched him in a playoff game last season. He didn’t get offered at this point, but I think he eventually will. His grades must be fine if Notre Dame, Stanford and Cal have already offered.

CB Tony Hurd, Fort Bend Marshall

Hurd didn’t get offered. He’s an undersized guy who plays safety in high school. Solid build but height might be an issue for some. He’s got a decent offer list, but it looks like Texas might be full at corner.

LB Tevin Jackson, Garland

Jackson committed. Was offered by OU last week. No video for him available.

DE Jackson Jeffcoat, Plano West

Jeffcoat is the best player to come out of Texas since Adrian Peterson, and he’s the best defensive end in Texas since David Warren. Texas is in good shape, but for some reason USC worries me.

QB Case McCoy, Graham

Yes, he’s Colt’s brother. And yes, he committed. He has better offers than his brother did, probably because of the success of his brother. I’ll go out on a limb and say that his skill set includes accuracy and a feel for the position.. We can now look forward to a quarterback controversy at Texas involving Applewhite McCoy and Chris Simms Garrett Gilbert.

LB Corey Nelson, Dallas Skyline

Texas offered. Probably the best linebacker in the state. He can really run. Watched him in a playoff game last season.

LB Dominique Patterson, Dallas Skyline

Patterson was not offered, and I personally don’t think he’s Texas good after watching him in person. I don’t expect him to get an offer in the future.

Ath Adrian Phillips, Garland

Committed. Phillips plays multiple positions for Garland, but it’s thought that Texas is recruiting him as a defensive back. There’s no video of him up that I can see. OU offered him on their first junior day.

RB Lache Seastrunk, Temple

Our top target at running back, and someone who would have a good chance of succeeding in that current abortion we call a running game. Some off the field stuff surrounding his recruitment, but he’s by all accounts a good kid.

OT Evan Washington, Desoto

Two days ago it was thought that Texas wouldn’t take any offensive linemen this year. Then yesterday Trey Hopkins commits and today Washington gets invited to campus. He wasn’t offered, but Texas told him that he probably would after they sort out the numbers. He’s only been playing football for a couple of years, but he’s super athletic, has a background in basketball and his dad played in the NFL for about a decade.

CB Adrian White, Desoto

Texas offered as have the rest of the big boys. Probably the top corner in the state.

We’ll probably get as many players from Desoto this year as we have the last twenty years combined. What changed? Their head coach. Claude Mathis took over the program after resurrecting Austin Reagan. He’s a central Texas native who starred at Bartlett and Southwest Texas, and he’s a fan of the program.

WR Darius White, Fort Worth Dunbar

The best wide receiver in the state got offered. I’ve only seen film, but he’s supposed to be ridiculously good. Of course, coming from the Fort Worth ISD he’s probably never run a proper route in his life. So he’ll either be the next Roy Williams or the next George Walker.

DE Reggie Wilson, Fort Worth Haltom

Texas offered as has pretty much everyone. Wilson is a native of the Ivory Coast, and we’ve had pretty good success with African defensive ends. Great athlete. Dude even plays soccer.

QB Connor Wood, Houston Second Baptist

Texas offered as have many others. He’s a big kid who also happens to be a very good athlete.

  1. What’s the background on the crack against FWISD receivers? Is the level of play that much of a drop off from Dallas?

  2. thank you. great summary of the day’s activities.

  3. Thanks for ya’lls work on this. This stuff is mana from heaven for the non-basketball followers among us until pitchers and catchers report in another week.

DISD kids don’t run good routes either, a lot of the time. That’s not a knock on Fort Worth, I wouldn’t think.

  5. I thought Texas had a wide receiver coach to teach players to do things such as run proper pattern? Realize it might be a stretch to ask someone to recruit and teach, but in this down economy sacrifices must be made!!!

Cotton may not be considered quite the prospect that Bible is but he does make up half of the most appropriately named DT tandem Texas has ever signed. The only way I could see us topping that would be to ink Johnny Petroleum and Reggie Gunrack.

Your only problem with the Applewhite/McCoy vs Simms/Gilbert argument is that Simms actually had an NFL caliber arm while Gilbert does not.

  8. It’s a knock on the coaching talent, if I had to guess. Some think it is a steg-infested cess pool of malaise and sloth.

Harris, Philips, and Jackson came out of left field for me. I knew Harris would get offered and commit, but he’s the guy in this WR generating some of the smallest buzz. I will be excited to watch all three of these guys. There’s a long way to go before the dust settles on who is who in this class once you get past the first 10 guys in-state.

It feels like we’re prepared for a longer pursuit of more top talent than we have been in a long time. Woods, Nelson, Wilson, Jeffcoat, Cobbs, Hicks, Reed, Seastrunk, Tai-Ler Jones, and whoever else pops up from here seem like they are long term battles. White, White, and Benson I think will commit this week.

I don’t mind the McCoy take, if he actually committed. We won’t have to worry about him leaving. He’ll learn the system and at least be functional. What do we expect from a reliable backup? I expect someone who knows what they’re doing and lacks the physical skills to win the starting role. I desire this every season. It is far less concerning than the ubertalented moron or the pseudo-talented moron. I guess in a perfect world, you’ve got the precocious rFr waiting in the wings behind a good upperclassmen starter. Without that, give me someone that knows the system and can make many of the throws.

  9. CTJ, you’re dead on about McCoy. The year after you get arguably the best QB in the nation, what the hell do people want? He knows he’s going to be behind Gilbert, and maybe get a shot at starting his senior year. You can’t expect to get a 5 Star every year at this position.

By the time we’re recruiting our next stud at this position, Case should be a solid fall back guy (Chance Mock, anybody?)

  10. Brandon Foster and Ryan Palmer just texted me and said that recruiting career reliable backups can backfire.

  11. Only if you have a coach that hates the best players. If Brown and Beasley are fulltime starters last year, the public perception of both those guys is totally different.

Just look at message boards now regarding Foster. People actually think he’s good now! All because he’s a nickel back that wasn’t covering anyone good enough to embarrass him anymore.

  12. Chris, were you surprised Foster made an NFL roster and stuck. I was–but he did.

  13. You should probably add Ahmad Dixon to the list as the best safety in the state just committed to us.

I’m not sure if Evan Washington received a schollie offer — which means they either want to wait on Jeffcoat or possibly Muschamp has an OOS prospect in mind.

Talent level seems extremely high in Texas, if you judge by the number of out-of-state schools mining the Lone Star for commitments. So I wonder if Muschamp will take a swing at OOS prospects or if they stick with Mack Brown flavored bread and butter.

If Seastrunk doesn’t commit they should take a swing at some OOS kids who have an interest.

  15. Mockingbird –

not sure what Washington and Jeffcoat have to do with one another, since one is an OL and the other is a DE. I think youre confused. Washington will likely get an offer and either be the 2nd or 3rd, at most, OL that we take this class.

Seastrunk wont commit till the AA game. He’s already state this. There are also plenty of talented backs in Texas this year outside of him. DJ Jones from Denison has been one mentioned as a possibility.

If they look OOS, it will likely be for linebackers, as they probably need 4 in this class. They will get Benson for sure, and have a good shot at Nelson. They will get Jordan Hicks from Ohio. But they will be looking for at least 1 more good LB.

The only other OOS kids mentioned at this point as targets will be Travon Reed, Demarco Cobbs, and Tai’ler Jones.

  16. Foster has always had ability. I remember really liking him when I first saw him practice. I didn’t realize he had stuck so I guess I am surprised, yes.

  17. just a minor nit, but Mathis resurrected Austin LBJ, not Reagan. Good stuff

  18. He was cut twice and signed on a practice squad in December.

I’m also feeling USC for Jeffcoat. Of course, I don’t know shit. But…it’s a feel.

  20. Foster signed in May, was cut August 30th but was signed to the practice squad on the next day. He came off the squad to be on the active roster for a few weeks at the end of the season, and was waived/signed to the practice squad on 12/2.

I was thinking of Reggie Wilson, not Evan Washington. Complete brain lapse.

Still think they take it slow with DE.

  22. Why are we offering 4 or 5 WR’s this year? I wish WM had as much room to brain fart as Kennedy. WFT? Take only 5 star recievers there is no room for role players while at the same time we are handicapping our D cordinator.

  23. both Wilson and Jeffcoat received offers, and they will keep spots open for both of those kids as long as necessary. Both will be nationally recruited players.

It will be a UT v OU battle for Jeffcoat. No reason to be scared of USC on this one.

  24. I’m getting a similar vibe off Jeffcoat. When they start out complimentary but cagey on UT, IMO, they usually end up somewhere out of state (and not OU).

  25. We are offering at least 4WRs for a couple reasons that have been well documented.

We expect attrition at this position after spring practice. Probably 2 kids will transfer (Webber, Payne). Additionally, DJ Monroe has had grade problems. Plus there has been talk of DJ Grant moving to TE. Plus Shipley graduating.

And its not handicapping WMs recruiting. This will be a defensive recruiting year. He’ll take at least 4LBs, 4DL, and probably 4DBs. Thats more than half the class.

  26. OK, that makes me feel better. When do we find out?

  27. when do we find out what? who transfers? not til the end of spring practice most likely.

and in terms of how many at each position we’ll be targeting…im sure things will be much clearer in a couple weeks after we get through the second junior day and the dust settles a bit. Id expect we’ll be sitting at about 13-14 commits by then, and we’ll have a clearer picture of who are remaining targets are.

Probably 1-2 RBs, 1-2 LBs, 1-2 DBs, 1-2 WRs, 2 DEs, and one possible OL will be all that we are left targeting.

  28. dixon is rumored to have committed..this one is important

Not sure if you can get there without a sub or not. They are breaking enough stories that if you’re reading and clicking through on this thread, you should be a subscriber.

I find the Foster/Palmer comparison to McCoy absurd. We should take the best QB we can get every year and have enough coverage behind them with at least one guy you can have faith will be around for the duration. QBs are prima donnas and you’re not going to simply have 4-5 star guys back up forever without problems. You can do that at virtually every other position and I agree with not ever reaching at places like DB. In 2011, we’re sitting pretty with 2 QBs if you don’t have a McCoy type as well.

Attrition at WR may not be as straightforward as the consensus would lead you to believe.

Call it the ‘Harrison Smith’ factor.

  34. There will be attrition announced at the spring drills opening PC and then there will be position moves for lingering non-contributors for the spring. Then we’ll hear about several of those guys and a surprise or two over the summer.

I don’t know if anyone thinks things will be straightforward, but I will be pretty stunned if any one of Monroe, Payne, and Webber are on the roster to open next season.

  35. I understand your point. But I disagree. And I believe the Coaching staff disagrees as well. If they didnt expect to lose at least 2 WRs currently on scholarship, they wouldnt be offering John Harris. If they thought they would only be bringing in 2-3 WRs instead of closer to 4-5, they would have held off on offering him.

Sure, nobody knows anything until it happens. But I think its been documented enough that there is some movement coming. Its a little bit more than speculation at this point.

  36. Why would D.J. Monroe transfer? He red-shirted. If I’m Webber, Paybe, Fitzhenry, I take a look at who’s in front of me and transfer. Mack should make it clear that they will ride the bench unless they transfer somewhere else, basically tell them they are cut.

  37. Mysterious Package–

Your logic with Monroe shouldn’t therefore change in regard to Fitzhenry, but it did. Somehow.

In regard to Monroe, the rampant speculation has been that he pulled the 0.00 in the fall. I haven’t the slightest if that is true, but there is enough smoke on it to believe it is pretty hot. The only place speaking of him being back is orangebloods, and that’s been a while. Did you miss all of that?

  38. The General said:

    “Why would D.J. Monroe transfer?”

    Grades.

Look at our WR recruiting like this.

    D. Terrell- TE (Mack even told the kid they liked him at OLB)

    J. Harris- WR (Mack identified this guy two years ago)
    D. White – WR (5 Star talent absolute take)

    M. Davis – WR (Have not offered yet. It will depend on what happens with Reed and Cobbs)

    T. Reed – Athlete (No brainer take regardless of what the other guys do)
    D. Cobbs – Athlete (No brainer take regardless of what the other guys do)

  39. MP, you want Mack to “cut” Fitzhenry before he’s played a down of football at the college level? WTF?

There is no way Jeffcoat comes to OU, it is between USC and you guys.

  41. Why do you say that? Everything I have heard is that OU is strongly in the mix.

  42. 6th Street,

The Jeffcoat to USC talk is legit. Basically it seems at this point its going to be a UT/USC battle again because Mom really likes UT but his family has ties to Ken Norton at USC. Of Course it’s early and anything can change but if you asked most people to call it today it would be between Texas and S. Cal.

“My biggest prank was in about 1996 in the early days of football recruiting services on the internet. I created a nonexistent bluechip high school player called “Gotch Yarbrough” whom Texas was supposedly recruiting (but to cover up for how nobody had heard of the guy, I said it was because he is a super talent from a smaller school in British Columbia, Canada!). Put it on the internet as rumor. One recruiting guru, David Garvin in Texas, bought the thing hook, line and sinker – and had it at his phone call-in number for a few hours “there is a breaking story of a bluechip recruit called Gotch Yarbrough” etc etc … It took him a few hours to realize his folly by looking at that funny name once more, but the internet was ablaze by then. I felt really bad for Garvin, but I really did not expect anyody to buy my prank. Anyway, Garvin hardly survived in recruiting much longer. “

  59. http://www.madjacksports.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24819

Jayakris, a well respected poster out of CA, puts up this new post entitled “Gotch Yarbrough”.

The post itself was like others of the type we read all the time except it dealt with this new exotic guy out of, I think, Ontario, Canada. Excellent stats — though not outlandishly impossible — that made you think, “Wow, we’ve got some interest from a new stud out of Canada and he’s coming in this weekend! Cool!” Plus the new out of state guy with the funny first name played at a then “need” position at DE. The post was written in a standard informational type prose that was unassuming and disarming.

Recruiting junkies kept posting through the evening about the guys coming in that weekend, “has so-and-so been sighted yet?”, and so forth, and now I, and others, are also talking about the unknown guy out of Canada coming in. You know, stuff like, “Hey this Yarbrough kid out of Canada had 18 sacks his SR year and he seems to have some real interest in us, plus all the West Coast clubs like him, so maybe he can play DE”, etc.

In these days the 900 number business was still going pretty strong. Garvin had one.

About 10:30 pm or so, after everyone’s all hyped up over Gotch Yarbrough, here comes jayakris, posting, “hey, guys, I got ya, bro — just kidding.” It took me 20 minutes to figure out what the hell he was talking about, and other posters had to literally spell it out to me, dense as I am. Whooosh! — “got ya, bro” went completely over my head at the time.

Pretty funny, huh? Yea, it was. Fooled us all. A lot of “fuck you jayakris — dick” type stuff, mirthful hilarity all around. Funny, but now done, right? Well, not exactly. In fact, not done at all.

About an hour later or so — good grief — guys are posting saying, “Garvin’s talking about Gotch Yarbrough on his 900 number — Can you believe it!” Everyone heads to the phone, and sure enough, here’s Garvin reciting jayakris’ post seemingly word-for-word like it’s Garvin’s “scoop.” The entire 360 bbs family is suddenly stunned at their keyboards, collectively wondering, “WTF??”, eyebrows furrowed, and then . . . .

Let the howling and peals of derisive laughter and posts begin. And did they ever.

It takes Garvin a couple hours to figure out it’s just a frickin’ internet bbs joke post, but it’s too late: Garvin’s running with the “breaking news” — for pay, mind you — over his telephone 900 number. When Garvin finally realizes he’s disseminated joke garbage he got off of a bbs over his pay service, he panics. Instead of just admitting his “scoop” was bogus and apologizing, Garvin gets his panties all wadded up in a knot, acting like somebody done him wrong, adopting this incongruous holier-than-thou attitude.

Incredulously, before the night is over, Garvin is so distraught he actually threatens to sue jayakris. And he’s serious as hell. Which brought about a second round of laughter and merriment even more jolly than the first. In those days, Garvin was, I think, still associated with Robert Heard, lawyer, and, for reasons associated with Heard, I suspect, Garvin kept the fiasco alive for several days preaching to the bbs about the dangers of the big bad courtroom.

Garvin didn’t sober up for about a week before he figured out the best thing to do was shut the fuhk up and move on. To Garvin’s credit, though, he finally settled down and after several months he actually could laugh about the now infamous “Gotch Yarbrough Affair” himself. But it took him a long time to get there.

Gotch Yarbrough — Texas Longhorn interent legend.

i really dont know how to evaluate talent looking at video so

    opinions anyone?

  61. Garland plays in a reasonably competitive district. They went 11-2 and advanced three rounds into the playoffs.

I put my Tevin Jackson thoughts in the 90+ response thread below.

  62. The Gotch Yarbrough story is virtually spot-on correct; however, the phantom was supposedly out of WA or OR, not Canada, as I recall it. Washington, I think.

Garvin really was pretty hysterical there for awhile, which only made everyone laugh at him that much harder.

That night was one of those recruiting internet legend nights.

  63. No, he was from Canada.

jayakris is the one who wrote the post, XOVERX.

No matter what Garvin ever did, he was always going to be known for that one misplay.

And I don’t remember Garvin being associated with Heard. Robert Heard owned Inside Texas at the time. Garvin owned Heartland Recruiting. As an aside, that’s where I first met Gerry Hamilton, who is now the co-publisher of Burnt Orange Beat.

    Good stuff, Callkevin.

  64. whatever happened to garvin? is he still extant?

extant – loose skin in the genital region.

  65. I know he’s alive, but in terms of recruiting, I haven’t heard anything about him since he parted ways with Burton and Rivals.

  66. I want to say that he was associated with an LSU site at some point.

  67. yeah, i’m thinking didn’t he have some association with max emfinger for a while?

Mr. Bateman – First let me say I’m not trying to be an asshole or pick a fight. This is a great column and great fun to read.

    Re this:

I think Kiffin’s staff is competent enough, particularly Papa Kiffin (DC), John Baxter (a pretty good ST coach), and Todd McNair is a decent RB

Kiffin’s father is a great coach, but the rest of that staff isn’t. Orgeron and Kiffin are both good, dirty recruiters and mediocre to poor gameday coaches.

How important is that in college football? How good of a gameday coach is Mack Brown? Greg Davis?

Orgeron is actually a damn fine defensive line coach,

    CTJ,

Always impassioned. I agree with you that his delay had to do with not being eligible to sign rather than awaiting for the smoke to settle. However, the point is not with motive but with opportunity. Maybe the kid and his family don’t know anything and just trudged along with his planned

I get what you’re saying, but honestly, it’s a cop out. Period. If the AD was to actually commit some resources into building a program, we would be competitive and probably would even give K-State a run for its money. We may never be a KU, but we sure as hell wouldn’t

Totally agree re: RJ. I’m hesitant to shout it from the mountain tops until he does it against a contending team. So far his success has been against 2nd tier teams.

Ginobili is just incredible to watch right now. Just goes to show how hurt he really must have been last season.

The Arkansas Razorbacks’ 2010 signing class did a good job of filling areas of need and adding size, speed, and talent to Bobby Petrino’s roster.

The major recruiting services did not rank the Hogs among the top 25 recruiting classes, while the Max Emfinger and Tom Lemmings of the recruiting world did think more highly

If the South is a region of guards, the East is a region of men. Large men, that play an old school, physical brand of basketball. Guys like Demarcus Cousins, Kevin Jones, Damion James, Trevor Booker, and Al-Farouq Aminu, put the power in power forward.

If we can score, we have a chance.  The Heat are a poor team in a mediocre conference this year and don’t come with a lot of fire power.  The one thing they can do is play defense, holding teams to 95.2 points per game, 5th best in the NBA.  Dorrell Wright returns from a
