I’m not going to do a traditional write up on this game. It wouldn’t be appropriate. It’ll be more fitting if I scattershoot a bunch of random thoughts and musings about the game itself. No coordination or flow, no complimentary segues. If my writing style was a metaphor for the way Texas basketball has played the last month or so this piece would have a hundred different predicates and 1 subject, dangling participles hanging out on the bench, coached by a blue streak of expletives that would make Bobby Knight blush. But then you couldn’t read it and Scipio would chide me for cussing. So I offer you humbly, my random thoughts on the game.
We talked about the team’s lack of identity ad naseum on this board so I’m not going to get into it in too much detail. We have one real shooter who can’t create his own shot or just refuses to, I can’t tell which at this point. Our most talented basketball player disappears at times and makes huge mental mistakes at others. The best thing I can say about Damion is that he’s really, really good when he’s not thinking. We have a coach that is in virtually every player’s kitchen at this point. Too much so if you ask me. Our toughest player is an undersized power forward and our point guard is at best an off the ball occasional ballhandler and at worst a defensive specialist that does the dirty work while the stars shine. Someone else said it best, this team is less than the sum of its parts.
Getting back to last night’s game, I figured Dex could do damage against the Tiger’s smallish frontcourt. We just needed to hide him defensively. But we don’t zone enough and Mizzou made us pay by finding assignment busts all over the place. So we had to go man, and Dex couldn’t handle Lyons away from the bucket. I’m still scratching my head as to where our helpside was when Lyons put it on the deck 18 feet from the basket. Add it to the list of head scratchers I suppose.
I thought Ward and Pittman were the only players that played with any cajones. Ward makes mistakes, but he’s not afraid. He was looking to punish pressure while the rest of the perimeter players seemed to be worried about turning the ball over. Pittman is the one reason we didn’t get run out of the gym.
Other than foul shooting, AJ Abrams really didn’t have that bad a game. He let the game come to him for the most part. He missed some open looks and he can’t do that if the team is going to win.
I think Connor Atchley needs to stop stealing minutes from Doge Balbay and Clint Chapman. If he’s hurt he needs to heal. If he’s not, he owes his team an apology.
Speaking of Doge, it would have been nice to see him on Tiller. Tiller’s penetration before Lyons took over was the one thing keeping Mizzou in the game. For whatever reason, Mason struggles staying in front of quick guards. I’ve always thought the lead guard position was killing him everywhere else, and I think Barnes even admitted this a week or so ago. What did Balbay do to warrant only 2 minutes of floor time?
Damion James had ten rebounds some of which were unbelievably athletic. He took as many foul shots in the game as HenryJames. That’s crazy. When DJ just plays on instinct he’s a world beater. When he’s thinking about where to cut, where to pass, or where to screen, he’s a shell of the offensive player he could be. This conference is full of jagbag forwards with more consistent point production than Damion and that’s a shame.
I thought our pressure really paid dividends last night. I wish we’d see more of it.
I thought Mizzou’s zone paid dividends for them and Texas will see much more zone from here on out regardless of the personnel we roll out. Bank on it.
I posited in the preview that Texas needs to get Pittman involved and a good way to do that would be to surround him with 4 ballhandlers who can control tempo on both ends of the floor to keep the big man involved. And it worked. We saw a lineup of Abrams, Ward, Mason, and James in addition to Pittman.
We also saw something on offense that bodes well for next year’s club. Texas played Pittman on the weakside block while they ran an iso ball screen game on the strongside. If the ballscreen drew any help from the weakside, the ball was immediately reversed for any easy entry pass to Pittman. We got 3 dunks off this look and forced Mizzou into a zone. In my opinion, you’ll see Pittman operate almost exclusively from the weakside block next year in an effort to keep the lane open for all of the playmakers coming to campus. It’s a staple of the Dribble Drive Motion offense and its off-shoots. It’s an offense that Hamilton, Bradley, and Lucas will excel in. Pittman will own the weakside glass in this look.
Pittman needs to stop making two silly fouls a game. You want him to be aggressive, but he needs to play smart.
Overall, I feel like I’ve been kicked in the stomach. Hopefully we can regroup and get a decent seed in the tourney. But I’m not going to lie, I’ve got one eye looking to next year. A year that should be special.
Thoughts?

As I’ve said elsewhere, Barnes’ greatest fault this year is not putting Jai Lucas in Harrison Smith’s shirt and then playing him 30 minutes a game. This team’s got so many neat pieces that don’t fit together in the slightest. Oof.
Great tags by the way.

I was out until about midway through the first half, and heard the Mizzou play-by-play on KMOX. I heard them describe Balbay dribbling into a trap and costing a time out. So, by the time I got home, I never saw Dogus. I also did not understand.
I saw them get out to a 12-point lead and I knew it was just a matter of time.
This is now the ‘05 team without the injury/grades of Aldridge and Tucker. It’s going to struggle to win anywhere.
Some of may have wondered — I know I did — why Jai Lucas? I guess we see now that as far back as November, RB knew that Mason/Balbay was not going to make progress as far or as fast as required to put together the pieces that have been recruited for next year.
In that respect, it still should be a really good team. They’re going to have to prove it now, in regard to the NC kind of team that I thought they would have. But Lucas/Bradley/Hamilton/Williams gives them a pretty good chance of filling the holes they need to fill.
These next six weeks, though, will not be a fun-filled ride with some ups and downs. Regrettably, ups will have to be savored.

I thought Mason played well in the first half, but once Mizzou ratcheted up the pressure his play fell off.
I thought Gary Johnson had one of his worst games for us and seemed rushed any time he’d touch the ball.
Damion James… I don’t even know what to say. It’s like a love/hate relationship. Kinda like the relationship I have with properly cooked refried beans.
If Pittman can work on his stamina and limit his stupid fouls he has the ability to be one of the best bigs in the country. As John Madden would say, “He’s got such strong hands! His hands are so big and strong… Yet so soft at the same time. He just plucks the ball out the air with his big, strong, soft hands”. He must moisturize… and work out.
We are going to struggle to make it out of the first round of the tourney this year unless we get a favorable draw… Or a point guard who isn’t afraid to shoot (and is good at it) falls from the rafters of the Erwin Center.

after mason rolled his ankle, balbay should have finished the game. mason was clearly still hobbled and it was no surprise that they went after him on what was effectively the final play of the game.

I posted some post game thoughts on the pregame thread, but I’ll just repeat this one point. I think Barnes needs to back off now and just let the boys play. They looked defeated and deflated after the game. Maybe if they keep the offense simple, i.e. feed Dex, and just play they might find their offensive mojo. Losing DJ can’t explain all of the dramatic drop off in offensive confidence. These guys just need to have fun on offense, and killers on defense.

a couple of thoughts:
- am i the only one who thinks that conditioning is not really an issue for Pittman anymore? his minutes are almost exclusively limited by foul trouble now, it would seem. that and occasionally getting in Barnes’ doghouse with defensive lapses.
- Gary Johnson really needs to improve his body control and start limiting his turnovers in the post. i know he only had one last night but the difference between he and Dex operating down low is very apparent. height difference obviously has something to do with that but still.
- losing DJ plus Atchley and James struggles do a pretty good job of explaining the offensive struggles imo

I think Pittman’s conditioning has improved a great deal… but there was a period where he was fairly winded after the action went up and down the court 3 or 4 times in quick succession. I can’t say I blame him though. I wouldn’t make it up and back once without having a mild heart attack.
On an unrelated note… Has anyone heard any updates regarding Alexis Wangmene? I know he went back to be with his family, but has there been any news regarding if he will rejoin the team next season?

I’m free. K State was f*ing liberating. Watching them get an offensive rebound after a missed free throw, on the road with only seconds left in the game, totally freed me from giving a shit about this Texas team.
I watched the game last night with the same bemused interest I would usually save for a December tilt between a Syracuse and a Coastal Carolina or a Middle Tennessee State. Mildly curious when a Syracuse would puke up the double digit lead and in what fashion.

Trips – With good reason. We don’t handle well. And when we’re in some semblance of control, we’re no threat to go by somebody with the dribble. Damion James REALLY needs to work on this. What is the story on him? Can he come back for another year or is draft day a fait accompli? Do we have room if he wanted to come back? I think he needs a lot of work but to your point perhaps in an offense that lets him just be an athlete, it won’t matter.
Atchley is an enigma wrapped in a riddle shrouded in mystery. Or something.
The biggest disappointment to me is Chappy. The play he demonstrated toward the end of the last year, the assumed strength gain in the off season, the accolades from the staff about him being “most athletic” plus some flashes seen early this season I thought really boded well. Not so much. Can’t tell if he’s just not there or if Barnes has motherfucked all the confidence out of him.
What a bummer this season has become.
Hope we can salvage some of it.

He’s been sitting in street clothes on the bench so that at least indicates he’s with the team. Can’t speak for progress on the injury, but he seems to walking around just fine.

What did Balbay do to warrant only 2 minutes of floor time?
Barnes said they had worked extensively on the guards not dribbling up the side and into the mid-court trap.
It was the first thing Doge did when he got in, and Barnes came out of his seat like Henry James had given him a hotfoot. He was PISSED.
I heard Barnes on the post-game admit that he shouldn’t have let it get to him that much and he should have played Doge more.

We just do not have any shooters on this team except Abrams and opposing teams cover him up now. One would think that any scholarship worthy player could make at least 40% of their shots.

B. Scholes that seems to be my mood. I couldn’t even get mad at them last night. I could just as easily have been watching IUPUI vs. Indiana St.
I watched the ESPN Classic game yesterday, Texas vs Mizzou, from 2002. They had attitude. It is hard to believe that there is not something going on behind closed doors. It is more that just lacking leadership. We can’t shoot, rebound etc but I don’t believe that is the whole story.

I’ve mentioned it before and I still dont understand why we do it. In a tight game if we get the ball back with around 45 seconds left what are we going to do? We’re going to put up a bad shot 10-15 seconds later, giving the other team a full shot clock to ice the game. Awesome.

By the way, the last two plays of the game, Connor’s fast ball to the Mizzou player and AJ letting the ball go out of bounds, were beyond pathetic.
It was like watching Lucy pull the football away just as Charlie Brown went to kick a field goal, but to add injury to insult, Lucy rams the football up Charlie Brown’s ass while he lies there prostrate on the ground.
I can hear Snoopy’s raspy snickering as I type this now.

gave my 2 tics to my son since Mr.Patron and I watched the game on a 56inch plasma. I throw up twice ,once each half , what a waste of Mr.Patron.
Trips “Pittman will own the weakside glass ” exactly, Dex is going to work out well on both sides of the lane if RB leaves him alone.
IMO this team can still make a strong run if Dog gets more minutes and we keep it simple and fun, let them play and be players.
The first step is to admit there is a problem and I think that was what the 800 lbs. gorilla just did when he was talking about Dog.
Now lets see there is eleven more step if that is correct before recovery starts to work out.
SR, Chapman is a younger and better AC. The potential it there ready to be released but his asshole is so tight that chappy does not know what is going on. Missed 3-4 give me shots 1 ft from the basket, great position but did not finish. Ran back to the other end with his head down.He will get better I hope this year.
“I thought our pressure really paid dividends last night. I wish we’d see more of it.”
IMO if we had kept up the pressure it would have been a better game for us maybe even a “W”.
Henry is calling.

Mason and Johnson eject the ball from their possession as if struck by an uncontrollable spasm. Mason does it when unguarded.
I am not a big Balbay fan, but if there was a night for him to see a lot of minutes, it was last night.
Bob in Houston said:

I haven’t seen Chapman do anything of value other than dunk this year, and not much of that. He can’t guard man to man — not that I expect him to, but he got caught a couple of times 18-20 feet from the hoop last night, apparently on purpose. It was a bad idea.
He must be awesome in practice.
Part of the thought that this team would be great next year was based on development of Chapman/Wangmene/Hill as an inside threat. Wangmene is hurt, and Chapman and Hill have done what they did last year and the year before, respectively.
I want them to improve just for their own peace of mind, and for one of those guys to become Jason Klotz. I see no sign of it.
I’m not ticked off, but I am mystified.

If Jai Lucas gets the 5 foot cushion that all of other point guards get, believe me he’ll take the shot. That alone will open the offense considerably.

First let me say I love these guys because they’re ours.
Since we turn it over so much trying to work the ball, and since we miss so many of the shots we work so hard to get, maybe we should try running a lot more than we do. What could it hurt? Besides, it might be fun.
Also, about this doghouse thing…..maybe it’s time to let the dogs out.

I previously posted we are a 5-12 upset waiting to happen. It appears as if I may have been a bit overzealous in my 5 seed estimation.
Damion James has the basketball IQ of my dog and my dog is not named Air Bud. When the guy guarding you is one of their best offensive players and he has 4 fouls with 4 minutes to go in the game, why in the blue hell would you shoot fade away jump shots or little runners, especially when that shot comes 10 seconds into the shot clock? At least get to the basket and sit the guy for the rest of the game.
AJ has forgotten how to use a screen and he just runs around rubbing off guys like a Tawianese massage therapist.
This team is infuriating to watch. Go 2009-2010!
jonestopten said:

Between the six and seven minute mark last night, Damion James ran down hard on the left wing and threaded through a small baseline opening for a slam-dunk in traffic. It was a play maybe four, five guys in the B12 have any possibility of making. The crowd exploded.
Then…
In about six seconds of clock time, Missouri hustles the ball up court and hits a corner three off the secondary break, thanks to some horrendous Texas transition defense–AFTER A MADE BASKET, mind you.
Mizzou 3
Texas 2
But I guess we win the contest for most spectacular athletic play.
Our season in a one possession microcosm.

I came to see if there was a post yet. I guess coming up with anything to say about another bad game and a really damaging loss is difficult. What’s more frightening is that exactly half way through conference and we are 4-4 and we are in 6th place, and we still have to play OU again (here, at least), and at A&M, at Oklahoma State, and at Kansas.
Oh – and AJ attempted zero free throws in Lincoln.
