Tom Penders: “It’s All ESPN’s Fault”

Posted by srr50 on January 28th, 2009 under Basketball

Last weekend Houston’s Aubrey Coleman mistook Arizona’s Chase Budinger’s face for a throw rug.

Coleman was kicked out of the contest, and then suspended by Conference USA for another game. His coach, Tom Pender, has come to his defense with a conspiracy theory. He says ESPN doctored the video.

According to Deadspin, Penders was on a Houston radio station today and claimed that ESPN made the incident look worse than it was, and hung his player out to dry.

He then added, “I’ve worked there, and I’ve seen them do that kind of thing. I called a producer I know over there, and he’s pretty high up, a guy named Norby Williamson; I called him three times. And he hasn’t returned my calls. So you know something’s not right.”

Tom made no mention of the video which showed Coleman laughing and being high-fived by teammates after being ejected.

  1. In Penders’ defense, that “x-ray vision thing” they did on the initial highlights was definitely ESPNishly lame. Coleman may have stepped on Budinger’s face on purpose (I think he was actually trying to do the “stay down” step-over that is so popular with defensive backs (among others) these days… but botched the move)… but he wasn’t clearly looking at Budinger on the replay… so ESPN had to add that lame “x-ray vision” effect.

Really weak. But this is the network that brought us “Who’s Now?”, so that’s to be expected.

  2. Heard Penders this morning and that is what he said. Best part is when he talks about knowing the official, having great respect for the official, how the replay operator at AZ only showed one replay, it was from the replay got the kid kicked out, and they miss Budinger taking two swings at Coleman. One of the two swings hit an official.

Tom really has become a very, very sad man.

ESPN also plants money in the freezer of certain key assistant coaches.

  4. and leak the grades of floppy haired, no defense playing malcontents.

Damn officials still can’t recognize a perfectly executed jump stop!!!

    Hey, who spilled my drink?

  6. Awwshit, I have to pick a side between ESPN and Penders?

  7. Nordberg,

In the beautiful world of hope revealed to us by President Obama’s election, there is no black and white, just many shades of gray.

Therefore, you can hate both ESPN and Tom Penders, and they can both be wrong.

    Hope,

    TG

  8. FBI is involved now investigating racial slurs from Arizona fans directed towards Coleman.

    Now it’s a political conspiracy.

  9. “Damn officials still can’t recognize a perfectly executed jump stop!!!

    Hey, who spilled my drink?”

    Now that’s funny.

Campaglio’s departure was when the wheels began to come off for the Penders era.

  18. Black Scholes, That was the last time any real coaching took place during Tom’s tenure in Austin.

  19. Hey, fuck all of y’all. Reggie is the most dynamic player in field sports history. Also, emphasis on Entertainment. It goes before Sports AND News, and nothing more entertaining than some special effects.

This would probably go a bit better if you read it in your Bobby Knight voice and it had two decades worth of goodwill built up from its gratuitous appearance on a popular late night television show. But oh well.

    1) Interior Worries. As in the Bears shouldn’t have any defensively

We talked about the upset of the decade in this post, but I watched some other great basketball today I’d like to comment on.

For me, the theme of the day was well-played basketball. I’m not only talking about what Northern Iowa did, I’m talking about the other seven games being really well

Today reminded me why I love this tournament so much. A good friend of mine mentioned to me that college basketball is the great equalizer of all athletic endeavors. At least of the sports we care about. He’s right.

For instance, you can have a 40 inch vertical, be Iverson quick,

    Patrick,

Unless you’re completely retarded, you know precisely what I meant. The closest any Big 12 team has gotten to winning the infamous Fuller Cup is the 2007 Texas squad. I can’t remember a team being that horribly undisciplined as a whole aside from the insane OU teams of the 80’s. That’s not

I suppose anyone could be your “favorite Longhorn basketball player” but Ford did more than just about anyone…although Durant is clearly better. Ford’s supporting cast was better than Durant’s in his sophomore year. Durant’s had more talent (Augustin, James, Abrams) but Ford’s was more developed (Boddicker, Ivey, Mouton, Thomas) and had worked with him for

This notion of Hamilton as being a disaster area on defense is all a bit much. He rebounds extremely well which, if it wasn’t obvious, is extremely important in this game since it secures possession of the basketball. Winning in basketball is achieved through the scoring of baskets and it’s necessary to possess the basketball

I posted earlier about how Collins’ effort just crippled Kansas today, but what amazed me the most was his complete inability to stay in front of his man on defense. UNI got a LOT of good looks out of penetration/pass after one of UNI’s modestly gifted athletes blew right by Sherron. The best

At least it’s shaping up that way if Sunday delivers.

As disappointed as I was in last year’s opening weekend of March Madness, this one is exceeding all expectations. Putting aside the fact that my bracket now resembles Kabul after the Taliban rolled through in ‘96 – a map of ordered failure –
