Garrido charged with DWI

Posted by HenryJames on January 17th, 2009 under Baseball

Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido was arrested this morning around 1am for drunken driving. This comes as a complete surprise to no one. It’s well known that Garrido likes to imbibe and then hit on Roger Clemens’ wife. Or something like that.

He has been suspended by the University without pay.

    Color me unimpressed.

  2. I heard “with pay” but that doesn’t make it any less stupid… well, maybe for the University.

If I got drunk anywhere near Roger’s wife, I’d probably hit on her too.

  6. Augie has been a frequent visitor to the popular night spots around town for the purpose of wining, dining and hitting on anything in a skirt since he arrived in Austin. Might not have been caught last night if he had remembered to turn on the headlights of his Porcshe. Suspension is with pay, but indefinite.

  7. Augie likes Grey Goose.

  8. Guess it’s the bottom of the fifth for Augie.

He must have been shit-hammered. Porsche’s, like many vehicles, have an auto light on/off feature so you never have to turn your lights on or off depending on the available sunlight.

I would think that at some point – like say at Augie’s age – the bar/club scene would get pretty old.

  12. Guess it’s the bottom of the fifth for Augie.

Ponderos, you just added value. We’ve extended your Barking Carnival pass for six more weeks.

  13. Of all the buffoon things, Augie had to get himself arrested for DWI. I wonder though. I figure that police would look favorably on a school coach in Austin. I wonder if he got aggressive and therefore did not get off.

  14. On the bright side, perhaps we can point to this incident to rebut the popular notion that the DUI stops by Austin’s finest are nothing more than “driving while black” arrests.

We have a long history of DUI incidents. I’m reminded of a certain All-American offensive tackle who was stopped for doing about 70 mph on North Lamar back in the 70s. Upon further investigation, he was discovered to be drunk. The Statesman reported that he told officers he was speeding because he knew he was drunk and wanted to get home as soon as possible so as not to endanger lives.

  15. There is more intoxification in the school administration than with Augie and his actions.

Hypocrisy keeps UT from true greatness. Students,Athletes,Coaches,& Administrators should be treated equally in all matters of concern.

  28. My favorite part of the press conference:

I’m very disappointed that I came up short in my quest to make it home. At the beginning of the season we set our goal and its always the same, win every game … finish each job as it comes. You take short cuts and you pay for them. But we tell our guys all the time about the importance of enjoying the process without the external pressures of trying to live up to something. And I felt absolutely no pressure as I drove off in my clk 500 and clipped a curb three blocks from my downtown penthouse. You see opportunities and you seize them, what is this rich thing called life without a little risk, right? And I’ve really enjoyed this process as much as it may surprise you. The cops have been great. Deloss is pissed but he’ll get over it. Sometimes you have to see the mountaintop before you can reach it. And I’ve been there, baby. And I’ll be back. We have to accept what has happened and move on. That’s the game we play … hey, is Linklater here with my bail money yet?

Travis Ford spent the 2nd half channeling his inner Rick Barnes — lot’s of standing around on offense while one player tries to generate something off a ball screen — then taking a forced shot.

So the Big 12 goes 5-2 in Round One.

This is the worst coached team ever in Barnes era. Period.
Worst defense over the whole season,
Offense sucked big time and the bench coaching was horrible, ransom’s attitude was better then the coach’s overall this season.

advertisers think they will probably get some deals for the additional 32 games that would be added. The feeling is that an ESPN would disount rates somewhat, since they already have a dual revenue stream — advertising dollars and subscription fees.

So far on Day Two, no buzzer beaters, but there was the obligatory #12 over #5 with Cornell thumping Temple 78-65, but the Ivy League school was everyone’s “inside” pick for an upset. Still the day hasn’t come close to generating the action that Thursday had.

I wasn’t trying to say they quit. They just didn’t play hard a lot of the time. Lazy = lack of effort. Example, our transition defense was about 75% effort and 25% stupidity. We loafed down court a lot. The kids didn’t like to lose so they would fight back,

This the most disappointing team because our talent level is higher than those others.

The DGib/Buckman team was the least talented, barely, after the injury to LaMarcus and Tucker’s suspension.
