If the offer is for enough money, I bet he’ll go regardless of the outcome of the BCS Championship Game. He’d be a fool not to take the epic amount of money that comes with being a NFL Head Coach. Also, it’s not like he has some sort of allegiance or reason for staying at OU. He hails from the great state of Ohio.

I was joke posting this on shaggybevo.com yesterday before I realized it wasn’t totally improbable. I doubt it happens, but if it does, it will be interesting to see where Stoops ends up in four years when he’s fired.
Actually, I could see him being successful in the NFL. He already treats his players like pieces of meat, is used to dealing with guys paying for pay, and has that NFL style “I’m your buddy as long as you play flawlessly” ATTITUDE that Belichick and Parcells exude.

A rumor requires somebody to float it. Potential floaters would be the Broncos organization or Bob Stoops (his lawyer really). I suspect it’s the latter.
Why would the Broncos be interested in him? College coaches are out of vogue in the NFL. yes, their defense needs fixing, but my understanding is that Stoops’ defense (strategically passes) very much a college defense. It’s not like he has a great staff to bring with him, like Jimmy Johnson had in ‘89. He has a staff of recruiters (come on, you don’t think there’s a place for Bobby Jack Wright on an NFL staff).
Why would Stoops’ people float such a rumor? First would he be interested in the NFL? He publically turned them down several years ago. He may want to give it a try, and at 48 years old, time is of the essence. He is no longer a young up-and-comer. He just got a big bonus payment from the Sooners ($3 million extra?), so if he were to leave now would be opportune. There are a lot of NFL jobs available, too, some yet to be announced. If he was interested in the NFL, floating his name for one job may get other teams interested as well. If he wants to go to the NFL, he probably wants to get as much of the deal done before January 8 as possible. The outcome of the BCS CG will either cement a half-done deal or threaten it.
You know what? He can stay or leave. It’s not going to matter to Texas in the near term.

Actually, though dimwits like Fecal McBee likely won’t remember it, the Cleveland Browns made a big-time move on Mack following either the 2000 or 2001 season, I forget which. Mack smartly turned it down, but it did happen, and was a very serious thing. I’m not sure any team has ever made a truly serious move to try to lure Stoops into the NFL.
All that being said, Mack is a college coach to the core. He would not be effective at all dealing with professional players.
Stoops, on the other hand, has been dealing with professional players his entire career at Florida and OU, and might well be able to become a good NFL coach.
