Mack Brown on Thayer Evans and his sources: “Those guys are fags.”

Posted by Sailor Ripley on December 29th, 2008 under Football, Recruiting

I’m paraphrasing a bit but he did have some comments:

“One-sided stories usually don’t make it when sources aren’t checked on the other side,” Brown said. “The story has absolutely no credibility with me because the writer did the same thing exactly last year and it’s obvious he has an agenda, in my mind, against Texas.”

Thanks to PB @ BON for the find at the DMN.

So you’re saying Billy Sims wrote it?

  6. This McFarland kis is brazen, admitting he is going to get his money.

I thought initially it was only Texas offering him money? Now it’s actually OU? This kid can’t keep his stories straight.

Damndest thing I’ve ever witnessed in recruiting….surely this thing will be investigated by the NCAA.

ummm… call me crazy, but I think he might have meant his NFL money.

  8. I think the money he refers to is NFL cash money.

  9. i agree with you, akina. But after all the allegations i wouldn’t dare mention “getting money” anywhere; especially on your facebook status.

And once he gets that million dollars, he’s gonna do two chicks at one time, for real this time.

  11. I think it is pretty obvious that he’s talking about the money he negotiated from OU. It seems consistent with everything else we’ve seen with his recruitment.

  12. Fuckin a, man. Chicks dig a dude with money and if I had a million dollars, I could hook that up.

  13. Ahem… he will “romance” two chicks at one time.

As these excerpts from the article have already been posted on Hornfans without apparent complaint from Chip Brown or Orangebloods I’ll repost them here:

    ——————————————————————————–

“I really believe that Jamarkus had his heart set on playing at Texas,” Tony McFarland, Jamarkus’ uncle, who lives in Houston told Orangebloods.com. “And he even said that. He wanted to go to Texas, and somehow, or someway his mind got changed and he wasn’t going to go against his mother. His mother wanted him to go to Oklahoma and something happened with her and Texas.”

    ——————————————————————————–

    ——————————————————————————–

“At first she was headstrong on Texas,” Tony McFarland said. “For some reason, and I don’t know why, she turned against Texas. When I asked, the thing was because the recruiter wouldn’t let her talk to Mack Brown.”

Sources close to McFarland’s recruitment said Adams had Mack Brown’s cell phone number and used it regularly this year and only recently stated she couldn’t get through to Brown.

Adams did not return phone calls to comment for this story.

    ——————————————————————————–

    ——————————————————————————–

But Lufkin coach John Outlaw told Orangebloods.com Texas appeared to handle itself professionally throughout McFarland’s recruitment.

“Texas started recruiting JaMarkus when he was a 10th grader and conducted itself absolutely in a professional manner through the whole process, in my opinion,” Outlaw said. “They didn’t do anything wrong. They did everything the way you would want it done from what I saw. And I just want it clear that never in 30 years of coaching have I encouraged a kid to go anywhere other than where he wanted to go. That’s all I’m going to say about it.”

    ——————————————————————————–

    ——————————————————————————–

“The incident where they wrote the email to Jamarkus about leaving him alone for the time being, we talked before they did that,” Tony McFarland said. “(Will Muschamp) let me know what they were going to do. I told him I thought that was best because of the way she was going off on Texas.

“But he did say he wanted Jamarkus to have a scholarship, he was still welcome at Texas, Texas still wanted him but they were going to back off because they didn’t want to break up the family.”

McFarland is the nation’s second-ranked defensive tackle prospect.
A highly-placed source in Lufkin that talked to McFarland shortly after the email was sent by Texas indicated that McFarland, like his uncle, approved of Texas taking a step back.

“Jamarkus said he was really relieved and he thought it was a really classy thing that Texas did that,” the Lufkin source said.

    ——————————————————————————–

    ——————————————————————————–

The sources, who agreed to talk on condition of anonymity, said McFarland spent most of the night with Texas fans at the Dyer Street Bar near the Sheraton Hotel in Dallas, where McFarland was staying.

“There were no girls there taking off their clothes like it was alleged. I also didn’t see any drugs. This was just a regular bar,” said one source with McFarland that night.

“The whole night he was there and he just stood against the wall and watched everyone. One of his friends was dancing with some girls, but he stayed really calm and didn’t do anything the entire night.”

A second source with McFarland that night said, “We were at the Dyer Street Bar and that’s where we saw him for most of the night. I was pretty pissed off when I read the article because there wasn’t any drug use and, as nice as it would have been to see girls all over each other, there wasn’t any of that either.”

A third source with McFarland that night said, “I was with him at various times throughout the night and there were not any drugs or women that took their clothes off. We were all in a couple of bars, but there really never was a party. There was just a lot of people drinking and having a good time. I was shocked to read what was reported.”

When asked if there was any chance that McFarland could have left the bar and gone to a wild party before he eventually checked back into his room at the Sheraton Hotel, the third source said, “No, none of that happened. After we left the bar, he was back in the hotel room sleeping when I saw him again. That wasn’t long after we left the bar and returned back to the hotel that we were all staying at.”

    ——————————————————————————–

    ——————————————————————————–

Tony McFarland simply hopes Jamarkus McFarland is following his heart.

“What I told Marcus was, ‘At some point and time, you have to make a decision for you and do what’s best for Marcus.’ What he came out saying was basically, ‘I’m not going to go against mom and I’m going to go to Oklahoma.’

“The thing that I want to convey is that I believe that Marcus really wanted to go to Texas. I believe he had a change of heart due to his mom and the recruiting process. That’s the way things happen. That’s the way things go. I’m not here to say anything bad about her, Texas or Oklahoma. Both programs are great programs and I think they handled Jamarkus the way that they saw fit.

“Jamarkus still loves Texas. I think if it was totally up to him, he would be at Texas. But it came down to a decision of what his mom liked, and that’s which way he went. At first, Jamarkus loved Texas. Due to his mom, he had a change of heart. He didn’t want to go against his mother and that’s basically the way the story went.”
    ——————————————————————————–

Address this Sooner posters. Now. Do something.

  18. Many have been saying for a long time that Jamarkus’ heart was with Texas but his mom wanted OU. With these comments coming out from a family member it will be interesting to see how he will be received in the OU locker room. My guess is he will get a cold shoulder from some.

The bad thing about that is I know the kid, I am from Lufkin originally. I went to school with his mom from the age of 12. In talking to some Lufkin coaches a while back about JM, they commented that wherever he goes he will need someone on him motivating him 24-7. They said he would be great if he was just had a mean streak. If he is in an environment where he is getting ostracized I fear JM will not respond positively. We’ll see. Only time will tell.

  19. holy shiet, and just like that… all the gooners were gone. it sounds like mack started ignoring the mom after she came requesting to top OU’s offer.

  20. well… i remember from the recruitment of ryan perilloux that it’s not worth your effort to deal with this crap. didn’t he embellish an English paper which “somehow” got to the NYTimes? isn’t he posting his future “millions” on facebook?

i wish this kid the very best, but i’m glad he’s not coming to Texas. i think the coaches feel the same way.

  21. Why do you wish him your best, rock II do? I understand goodwill and respect the sentiments, but we’re too cavalier about it as a world at this point. As a result, the return for it is watered down.

I am not typing that ill-will should be wished at the guy, but I prefer to reserve my good will for folks that earn it. Our current recruits, players, various posters, friends, family, coworkers, worthy adversaries, etc. People who lie, cheat, steal, and generally have no heart can go pound sand or play in traffic.

The “good kid” term goes with this kind of thing. Why do we think this? Do we know him? What we do know of him doesn’t paint him as a “good kid”, in my mind. “Good kid” is a term like “genius”, “unbelievable”, “love”, “hate” and “phenomenal”. These are words used at this point in so thoughtless a manner as to carry very little meaning until you actually encounter in life one of those terms. Then the absurdity of how flippantly those words are tossed around is put into sharp relief.

Not trying to nitpick, I just keep seeing people “wish this kid the very best” or call him a “good kid” and it makes me cringe. I realize my thoughts are probably not the standard, of course.

  22. Closetojumping… who are you? the devil? goodwill has become too cavalier? huh?
Good will and peace towards men. i know it’s controversial. after all, men have been nailed to the cross for it.

  23. Ha. Well said and good point.

  24. OK, I’ll address it, even though it won’t change anything. Thankfully the kid is coming to OU, will have a nice career, will be hell bent on beating Texas’ ass on the 2nd Sat in October for a few years and will go on to be a millionare in the NFL. That’s really the bottome line isn’t it? It hurts I know – year after year OU plucks about half the top 10 in TX and you all bitch but it will keep happening because kids want to win championships and play for national titles and recent history would suggest they have the best shot of doing that at OU.

As for Chip Douche’s story from a TX perspective- how is that any different from Evans’ story from an OU perspective. While Evans’ isn’t supposed to be writing from an OU perspective it’s pretty clear he was and that’s another story – not really anything in there that’s earth shattering…and as far as the stuff about the party – how is that the writer’s fault? He was writing what the kid had written in the paper. So Chip Douche is quoting the kid’s uncle from I’m guessing his estranged father’s side..I wonder if he’s real tight with the kid’s mom – it’s shocking that they might disagree – ground breaking stuff really.

I’m sure it was a tough decision for the kid, it always is for the kids that go against something that they’ve been close to – but very few regret it and this guy will be no different – Roy Miller was too scared to do it, Jamarkus wasn’t – can’t wait to see it

  25. Thanks for that Dexter Manley.

  26. boomer… your bias is poetic. you make this fun.
45-35. we got the rights for the entire year.
    see you in october. child.

  27. This kid’s mom is just a complete mess of a person. I also don’t feel sorry for this kid who made up the stories about what happened in Dallas. As far as OU having a better chances at National Championships, last I checked you have lost ever bowl game you have been to in I can’t tell you how long. Also, you haven’t won a national championship since 2000. Also, you are going to get SMOKED by Florida. So what on earth are you talking about? Your team is a joke every single year in the bowl games, I mean every year, BUT ONE.

Good luck OU, you’ll need it.

  28. Chip Brown could teach Thayer a thing or two about being a real reporter. His sources reveal the NYT article as the utter horseshit we all knew it to be. Thanks Minnesota.

Well, other than the fact that Evans is associated with the NYT. You completely missed the point of the entire article that Chip had written. It was obviously going to have a UT slant, but it had FAR less slant than Evan’s piece which was supposed to be unbiased whatsoever as it was being posted on the NYT’s website.

Furthermore, Chip actually acted like a Journalist and did research and gathered background information for his article which was supported by three separate sources. I wonder which is better, using a kid’s high school paper without permission or quoting three separate sources all with permission, albeit one was anonymous. Evans could’ve at least FEIGNED having a Journalism degree before submitting his article.

  30. roy miller made his own decision;jamarcus did not.

what kind of juvenile joy do you sooners get by typing chip douche? i am 20 and i feel i am too old to talk with sooners. Also what is this deal with “boomer”. In australia, people refer to kangaroo’s as boomers; and we have every right to shoot them. if only..

  31. Boomer,

As for Chip Douche’s story from a TX perspective-

“Chip Douche?” That is comedy gold right there! Never have I read such subtle yet simultaneously poignant wordplay. Who but a satirical genius of the highest order could pull off such a poetic substitution of an insulting reference to feminine hygeine for a man’s last name? Swapping out “Brown” for “Douche” is the kind of clever and surprising twist that, by virtue of its startlingly logical appeal, inevitably tickles the humor centers of the brain.

You clearly have a panache for biting satire. Bravo, sir! Bravo!

Also, you are a huge douche. (Sorry – I couldn’t resist a little tribute humor, as lame as my attempt to replicate your masterpiece may be.)

From all appearances, Texas was genuinely gallant in its effort not to cause friction within the family. OU appears to have been hell bent on excalating that friction and taking full advanage of the result.

  33. No problem Trips, any time. By the way congrats on your new found celebrity of starting false internet rumors – I’ve seen your name tossed around all over the place – must feel good to start rumors that negatively impact your school’s recruiting – good times

Boomer the only people ignorant of the situation are willfully so. This is the worst kept secret in the state. Now you’ve certainly demonstrated a marked lack of intellectual capacity but I don’t for a second believe you are actually dumb enough to have read the excerpts above and not understand that it pretty much validates what Trips posted. Mom’s offered goodies. She asks Texas for same. She’s told, in writing, Texas won’t play ball. JM to OU and Mom to your hatchet man Evans with his homework and wild, ridiculous accusations. When actual standards of investigative journalism are applied these allegations are shown to be outright false and JM admits such. And it’s not finished. She’s going to get more than she bargained for and so will OU.

  36. Whenever he watches the end of A Christmas Carol, CTJ hammer-throws grandma’s cat into the flat screen (head first of course).

  37. Boomer–

I pray that OU gets every recruit that remotely resembles McFarland and his zanny mother in the future….Texas doesn’t want them and we don’t need them!

    I’m going to type this very slowly for you so that you completely understand: T e x a s b a c k e d o f f r e c r u i t i n g M c F a r l a d b e c a u s e w e
    d o n ‘ t P A Y p l a y e r s l i k e O U d o e s.

McFarland is leprosy to OU now, you wanted him at any cost and you got him at God only knows what co$t.

I know that the NCAA’s standards are pretty low these days, but since OU is already on probation for payola I wonder what the next penalty will be….hazard any guesses?

  38. McFarland is leprosy to OU now, you wanted him at any cost and you got him at God only knows what co$t.

I fail to understand your analogy. Who in the hell wants leprosy “at any cost?” Shit, I’d pay a lot just to avoid leprosy.

I suggest you pull your head out of Bevo’s ass bc the conclusion jumping you make is asinine. Chip Brown’s “assessment” basically proved info that JM had already admitted, that the party scene just didn’t happen. We already knew that. Then there is a third person account from “Uncle Tony” that stated JM “still loves Texas. I think if it was totally up to him, he would be at Texas.” Really, he knows this as the truth? They must be really close, seeing as they live well over 2 hours apart in different cities.

I really find it a fascinating character study of how the typical horn can spin such little information into “facts”. That Trips was correct on his still uproven allegations, OU surely cheated bc, well, they cheat ya know. Its all standard issue I guess that gets entrained at a young age…

  40. The funny thing will be when he switches his commitment to Texas, then you guys will all be knobbing him. If he’s such a Texas fan, that will happen–he should go anyway. I don’t think Sooner fans want someone playing for them whose heart is with the burnt orange. And I definitely wouldn’t want his mom controlling him for four years like Phil Simms did Chris. We all saw how that turned out–Phil was Mack’s puppetmaster!!! What an absolute travesty–Major was used and abused by the school he loved. Not enough hip-hop on his IPOD I guess…

The hilarity continues. Yes, heaven knows in this day of carrier pigeons and telegraphs it’s pretty difficult to have a close relationship with a friend or family member over distances as vast as a half dozen or so counties. That’s greatness.

    More! I demand it!

  42. 6X—

The closest McFarland will ever get to a Texas uniform is the one he will be peeling off his face mask every October in Dallas.

That kid is going to be feeling some burnt orange pain for four years.

Of course, with Garrett Gilbert taking over for McCoy in 2010 McFarland won’t be the only Sooner defensive player feeling a lot of pain over the next five years.

McCoy will make it 3 of 4 over OU during his reign and Garrett might just one up him.

  44. “The funny thing will be when he switches his commitment to Texas.”

No, the funny thing is that you don’t seem to realize that this isn’t an option for him any longer. Oh and your presumptions and comparisons about Simms, Applewhite, et al are equally ridiculous. In the future, I would recommend not advertising your ignorance on subjects you know little if anything about.

seems to me the uncle’s assertion makes all the more sense considering Jamarkus even admitted in that flimsy NYT piece that “you just don’t go against mom and grandma.” Translation: he did indeed really like Texas, but–for whatever reason(s)–mom trumped him.

  49. MinnesotaHorn, why the slightest interest in Sooner trolls’ response?

SINCE73, 6XBig12, ulose, etal, are clearly jerk provocateurs with nothing original to say who thrive on reaction. This is particularly true of 6XBig12 who displays a real gift for saying less with more mind-numbing repetition.

Want them to go away? No response whatsoever will take you a lot further than logical argument.

  50. Good riddance, JMac.

Note to Mack Brown: Don’t waste your time on these punks who won’t make up their mind. Any kid not smart enough to commit to the Horns when an offer is made is either too stupid or too crooked to worry with. Another drama queen bites the dust. Let the curse begin.
