Jamarku$ McFarland already backtracking on New York Times story

Posted by Trips Right on December 28th, 2008 under Football, Recruiting

A tip of the cap to poster 98 for the heads up. Outstandingly predictable snippets about Thayer’s Fantasy Island article on the McFarland recruitment.

Dex
Girls Romancing each other at a Texas Football party?

The Times article included inflammatory statements McFarland had written about the recruiting practices of Texas and LSU for a senior English class assignment.

McFarland said he embellished a passage taken from the English paper detailing free alcohol and drugs and topless women at a party of Texas fans in Dallas.

“Some things we knew were kind of mixed up because (the reporter) got a paper of mine,” McFarland said. “The paper I wrote for an English class – it was spiced up a little bit for class. But a majority of it was correct.

“I could have said I just went to a party. For an English paper – I’m taking a college course – you’ve got to explain. It’s brainstorming. If I knew he was getting it, I would have known what was right and what wasn’t right.”

McFarland declined to indicate what parts of his English paper were “spiced up,” but reiterated no Texas players or coaches were at the party in Dallas.

He said he was not sure how the Times reporter obtained the English paper but suspected a family member had given it to him.

“I didn’t know he had it,” McFarland said, referring to Times reporter Thayer Evans. “He came to my house one time when I dropped LSU (from consideration) just to observe. I think he got it then.”

A lavish party hosted by boosters, coaches or players during the recruitment of a prospect as McFarland described in his paper is forbidden by NCAA.

McFarland said neither he nor his mother have heard from the NCAA since the story was published. He said he has not spoken to Texas or LSU since the story ran.

Hilarious crawfishing going on from the sooner camp. Credibility shot. Game over for sooner backers. Again, from Rivals. Some interesting comments from Jamarkus’ handler mother.

So who invited him to the party and who took him there. If the party was put on by UT boosters and if it is a NCAA violation then the UT compliance folks will be on it and we will soon know. This is ,imo, a clear case of momma asking us to bid on J-Mac and our saying no way and our telling the NCAA about it.
Then ou freaks out and comes up with a strategy in cohoots with momma.

From the Sun Times piece by Kevin Allen:

“It’s a shame Evans didn’t do his due diligence on this piece. Without this glaring and inexcusable flaw, it’s a great piece of journalism and a compelling story.”

Uh . . . Didn’t the story essentially center on this “flaw”? I love the way Allen scolds the writer but rewards himself for enjoying fiction. Next time, try “Moby Dick.”

  4. Where is the legion of “Everybody does it” Sooners?

  5. Wow,

I’m thinking Stephen Glass changed his name to
Thayer Evans. Apparently the lazy journalism of only quoting one person and not attempting to check that one person’s claims is “great journalism.”

Is the kid claiming this guy stole his term paper? Shady.

Is the AAS or Daily Texan investigating this sham?

  8. Jeff, The way I read it, the young man is saying that he doesn’t know how Thayer got the paper, but thinks a family member got it when Thayer visited the household.

I do have one question for Jamarkus. You wrote this paper for class, you bring it home, it shows up in the hands of Thayer, and you don’t ask either Evans or your family how he got it?

  9. Mr. Evans should have at a minimum asked Jamarkus if the story in his paper was real or not.

But, why let the search for truth ruin a good story.

  10. Jeff, I agree, but I had a thought about the paper. Jamarkus said he wrote the paper for an English class and that he “embellished” some of the details. I am sure that he is getting asked all types of questions about what is happening on his visits and many of those questions are shaped by what people see in movies and such about the recruitment of athletes.

Jamarkus decides to write what people want to hear in the paper which is great for class, but what if that paper was never meant to get home. What if Mom or Grandma were never supposed to see the paper and what if they did? Kid is put to the fire and he doesn’t exactly deny what he wrote. They pass the paper on to Evans and what was make believe becomes a perceived fact and now the kid is left exposed.

Might sound flimsy, but my wife and I have three teenagers at home and I would lie if I said our kids haven’t gotten themselves into something that got out of hand much faster and bigger than they expected.

Anybody know the name Tawana Brawley?

  11. Hi!

    i wins award!

  12. JustaGuy…Your story is just as plausible as Thayer Evans and mom being in cahoots to make a UT commitment impossible.

  13. Slappy,

Very possible, but Jamarkus sounds like someone that just got in over his head pretty damn fast.

Maybe he did know the paper was given to Evans, maybe his household knew the paper was wrong, but let me ask you this question?

You are a high school senior and you write what he wrote in this paper and you Mother and Grandmother see it and you don’t think some questions arise?

  14. As the father of a 17-year old HS senior (male), I am completely familiar with the possibility that, in discussions with friends/classmates, things get embellished (more than the size of genitalia or mammary glands).

Not that I did any of that in HS or on the 40 Acres.

  15. I don’t think anyone thinks Evans had nefarious intentions or anything. But the guy printed a damned school paper as fact and did no checking up on it. Maybe he wanted to believe it, but even if he was totally impartial he still screwed the pooch.

  16. Chris, Completely agree on Evans and this does get into the grey area about the difference in writing an article for a newspaper and writing a blog under the umbrella of that same newspaper. Did you see the special Bob Costas did on athletes and the media. The most heated conversations involved the guy who wrote the blog and if I remember correctly the point of contention was accountability for what he wrote.

  17. After everything I’ve seen (the tone of the piece, Thayer Evans’ prior work, Thayer Evans’ connection to the Darrell Scott article last year) I think he may have had nefarious intentions.

Taking it to the next level…Did he have any connection to anyone at OU in conspiring to do this…that would be the really damning thing.

  18. it’s the New York Times – when have facts ever entered into the equation?
I feel sorry for the kid, his mother and grandmother are in way over their heads.
It’s a good thing that most people in Lufkin can’t read.

  19. It seems that they may have to suspend trading in Thayer Evans’ stock…it’s tanking.

When are you going to give us the true scoop, Trips?

  26. How do you use the term paper and not ever ask J-Mac if it was all true and ask for specifics? How does J-Mac not even know the guy has the term paper until Christmas when the story is printed? Surely a good reporter would question J-Mac about the facts of the story!!!! Weird stuff by the NT Times free lance writer!

  27. Black Scholes said:

That Chicago Sun Times link is to what looks to be a blog by some of their sportswriters; nothing official (are you paying attention, NYT? Need to keep these separated or you’ll destroy your brand).

My response FWIW in case it doesn’t get posted:

“I’m more than a little surprised a graduate of the University of Missouri journalism program would assume that the article was otherwise factually correct when the only piece of information to be confirmed was found to be inaccurate in a number of ways (read: basically in toto). That is a curious path of logic at best; most J-schools would train a student to think that if such a key story point is basically false, it should call in question the entire foundation for the article. We’ve seen time and time again that when a writer plays fast and loose with the facts it’s rarely – never? – just in one instance.

I have to conclude that you find it a ‘great piece of journalism and a compelling story’ largely because it’s most likely fictionalized. At best, it doesn’t pass the basic standards of journalism and should not have seen the imprint of the NY Times. At worst, it’s a hit piece by a glorified blogger with a decided agenda. Either way, I suspect this is not the last we’ll hear of the affair.

Regardless, Kevin, I’m disappointed that you found this so easy to believe. The amount of hyperbole alone should have set off warning bells. For a journalist, you were entirely too willing of an audience. I wonder if that might not reflect on some of your issues regarding the target of the piece.

Stay tuned and I’ll look for follow-ups here as the story unfolds. I think you’ll be surprised. And apparently disappointed.”

  28. Thayer will never live down the fact that he juiced a high school English paper as his one and only source for his article. This went from a disappointing story of losing a recruit to OU, to a laughable tale of Fellini-esque proportions. I sense that more enjoyment is to come.

Karma is a bitch that will bite you in the ass and run over your dog.

  29. You just got to love this stuff. I’d love to see that kid go to OU so that it will be a great motivation for our coaches. I can just imagine the comments thats going to come out of the broadcast booth during the game. This is a gift that will just keep on giving. Where are the sooners now?

Just watched JM’s interview from the AAA festivities. He seems like a smart, well spoken teenager. I actually feel sorry for him because it’s clear from his opening sentence that the decision to attend was made to please momma and granny. He says so himself. It also seems that he is not overly excited about his decision and that deep down he knows that this is not what HE wants.

Where are the Poopers and the Trolls we’ve been so happy to host over the last few weeks?

  31. Let me get this straight… So, Thayer Evans actually didn’t talk to *either* side of the article?

  32. What in the world happened to all the toothless, trailer-park-trash, sorry-bastard Sooner fans who were so anxious to post their thoughts on this story just 24 hours ago? Amazing how fast the dipshits head for the hills.

Guess I should have checked out for the latest post, you guys were all over this. I had a helluva time getting back here. I snagged my best pair of jorts on some stripped copper wiring I was thieving to make myself a big batch of Ice for the MNC game on the 8th. Had to get to Wally world to get me a fresh pair of Wrangler cut offs, got a paternity case with cousin Rhonda this afternoon, got to look good with my freshly greased mullet. Congrats on the concession that the debaucherous party scene was embellished. Victory for the Horns! However, are you not a bit concerned that they are standing by the rest of the story? You know, the part about Horn boosters offering to take care of Miss Adams needs if JM went to Texas. Thats been my case in point since I jumped into the fray over here. Trips has claimed all along to have the dirt on OU from his inside sources for these under the table inducements. Yet to see any proof to this. JM and Adams claim quite the opposite. So who is right? Do your sources tell you if the NCAA is going to come in and get to the bottom of this mess? I guess since one facet of this story has been proved as false, the rest is just going to go away??? So in my mind, Trips article suggesting illegal activities by OU without proof is no different than Thayer’s article to you all on BC. Comment away.

  35. Why should we be concerned? They don’t seem like the most credible people, do they? The mom is one step above Baghdad Bob.

  36. Groundhog Day said:

    December 29th, 2008 at 7:40 am

It’s an issue of credibility. If someone lies to you once are you going to believe them the next time? JM seems like a smart, good kid who was manipulated by his mother. It’s clear as day what went on here. Only people with inside info know what happened to sway momma, but it’s obvious the way UT was painted in the article is nothing but garbage. That family from Lufkin made a big mistake looking for handouts and then trashing other schools in public. Why not commit to the school of your choice and go about your way? The sad thing 6X is that this should be a very happy time in this kids life and he looks absolutely miserable in that interview. He has been played by momma and shipp.

  37. 6xBig12Champ said:

McFarland tells Rivals.com that he and his mother stand by the rest of the article and that the majority of the English paper was not embellished.

McFarland’s mother said she had nothing to lie about in the story.
Kashemeyia Adams, McFarland’s mother, said she was quoted correctly in her criticism of Texas’ recruitment of her son. Adams declined to correct or clarify any of her comments in the piece, standing by the comments.

“I don’t have anything to add to it,” Adams said. “We knew people wouldn’t be happy. The truth is the truth. I have no reason to lie. I have nothing to change (about the story).”

Again, just a portion of the story was stretched. Still no rebuttal to the rogue booster aspect.

To me that means it’s their word against UT’s. So I think it would be in UTs best interest to get the facts out there, don’t you? Something has got to give.

  38. PatronSaint said:

I’m probably the only one that doesn’t think the Sooners did anything nefarious here.

I just think that the McFarlands were surrounded by a bunch of people that wanted Jamarkus to go to UT and resorted to some ridiculous defense mechanism when they decided that OU was the spot.

6x: do you believe that Coach February suddenly became a blowhard braggart?

Do you believe that “numerous inducements” were offered to get Jamarkus to go to UT, but only the one with the most tangential relationship to UT was worth mentioning in any detail?

The fact that Adams was able to perceive as “tacky” UTs acknowledgment of the difficult decision that McFarland was having to go through, and giving them space to make that decision should indicate enough that we aren’t dealing with someone who is a “just the facts” witness. Things are going to be spun OU’s way.

The only concrete thing that didn’t have Adams’ hand all over it in the article was just refuted by the very source of the claim. What else do you want?

  39. “ou know, the part about Horn boosters offering to take care of Miss Adams needs if JM went to Texas. ”

Yes, because we’ve been confident all along the whole thing is bullshit and now the first dominoes are falling like a house of cards– checkmate.

  41. My posts never had anything to do with Thayer’s article–once again, no surprise that said universities went to sleazy lengths to get a top recruit. Gee, that’s never been done before!! The thing that got my blood boiling as a college football fan is Trips making outlandish claims about OU with ZERO proof. At least Thayer knew there would be consequences, whether good or bad, and stepped up to the plate with something regardless. He put his neck on the line by writing SOMETHING–even if it’s a fairy tale, he gave us something to chew on. All Trips does is shovel out burnt orange garbage with no substance–he’s not even attempting to polish his turd, he’s just giving you a turd, and a hollow one at that. Where’s the beef Trips? Can’t wait to see your blog in the NYT about OU…Wait, they don’t publish blank paper.

  44. ulose, wow. You’d rather be lied to as long it’s a complete lie, one with a introduction, a body and a conclusion? You can’t be this dense.

My post is what it is. My source told me that Adams asked what UT was selling. Texas then backed away from the recruitment and sent a letter to the McFarland household so all the parties were on the same page. That’s what happened.

  48. Wow, well that just clears everything up–who’s your source, Groundhog Day? Trips, please…My source said that McFarland was seen with Mack coming off the elevator at the ZaZa on OU/TX weekend with a mink coat, iced up to the hilt, and white residue under his nose. Then Mack gave him a thick envelope for the cab ride and “his trouble.” See how ridiculous all this sounds? I can’t believe these Longhorn lemmings wait on baited breath for your every word–it’s like finding out the on-line pickup artist you’ve been subscribing to is 38 and still lives with his parents! Trips, you haven’t been crashing any funerals lately, have you? What a joke…

  49. I’m sick of this ou troll coming on this board. It’s very simple 6xiblowmyself. Where in the article or anywhere else has anyone said that the free loan or the party or any of the unsubstantiated claims in the NYT article were done by a booster with ties to UT? Nowhere!!! Go read the article again and again and try to read more facts into this. Call Thayer up and maybe have him put more polish on his ou blowpiece. It just isn’t there. I for one believe very little in this article. The guy took a Creative Writing paper that Jamarkus wrote and passed it off as facts. From the name of the course alone Thayer should have known to corroborate the paper. Oh wait, he definitely should have asked permission from the writer to print portions of the paper. Wait, Thayer didn’t do that. I am sure the quote of Mack Brown’s email was correct b/c I’m sure Mack Brown sends an email to the mom saying “JaMac wants Texas, and Mom wants OU.”

As far as discrediting what Mrs. Adams says. I think Jamarkus blowing up the Creative Writing piece was the easiest attempt at hopefully from their point of view diffusing the article. They hoped to do this so Mrs. Adams wouldn’t have to be asked the hard question about her quotes.

6x – I did enjoy the playing up of your Oklahoma lineage. I think that and the fact that you are so hopelessly hanging on to the article as something relevant are the most comical things about these posts.

Except by the unanimous reaction to this fable you know that’s not true. Texas fans want this sordid little tale dragged into the light and exposed; it won’t hold together and you know it. It’s the sooners that hope it goes away; your concern – and rightfully so – is that eventually someone in the press wakes up and realizes there is a trail worth following and it leads to Norman. Where a school just a few years removed from the last time their business procedures came under scrutiny is playing a very dangerous game.

  61. 98,

I understand and for one, enjoy The Daily Show. Most people realize it’s a farce, but I’m afraid a good chunk of Barking Carnival’s followers take it as gospel. And therein lies the problem–rumors have always and will always get started on blogs of this sort. Even if the intent is for entertainment purposes (which is not the case with Trips), plenty of people perusing junk like Barking Carnival take it as fact, especially those who share the same affiliations. And frankly, that’s how Trips is selling it–he’s sucked in the Branch Tripsidians hook, line, and sinker. First he drug OU under the bus by concocting a no-truth serum, mixing it in the koolaid, and watched in his masterbatorium while the rabid dogs drank it up. Then after conflicting stories surfaced and people were holding him to the mat, it took him 4 days to come up with “Adams asked what UT was selling and Texas backed away”?!! I don’t see OU anywhere in that equation–did he misunderstand his source because it’s loud in Chuck E Cheese? Or did he have his burnt orange earmuffs on? You said it best 98–Trips has been all but right up until now. Probably because he’s never been challenged by anyone–his underlings just wallow in his slop when he flings it at them. Thayer puts his information out for everyone to read, not hidden under a burnt orange blanket. Trips makes Thayer look like Edward R. Murrow!!

There is a very easy way for Miss Adams to have credibility on her account of the illegal/NCAA infractions that she claims UT did…..release names, dates, times, and places.

If she refuses to do so publicaly, I hope UT subpoenas her and forces her under oath.

Miss Adams has libeled the univeristy and the univeristy and the NCAA deserves to know the facts so that they can react accordingly.

  64. I think it goes without saying that BC has much more credibility than the NYT. I can’t even imagine that is up for debate.

I consider the NYT to be an upscale NYPost. Instead of making stuff up about celebrities, the NYT generally sticks to making things up about governments, countries, politcal figures and causes and various other world issues. I think they are just broadening their horizon now and working major universities into the mix.

OU has not been ‘drug’(as you put it) into the story by trips it has been center stage from the beginning.
No one was holding him to the ‘mat’(other than the sooners) and he was clear from the beginning that he could give out only a certain amount of information because he needed to maintain the confidentiality of his source.

You’re right–farce was the wrong word. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Daily Show–it’s entertaining, and most the time is more informative than the regular news, but we can both agree that it’s very slanted to the left. It’s spun in a way to cater to it’s demographic, just like Barking Carnival. Anyway, now that mostly everything’s in the open about the NYT story, can we get the full story about OU and the source? At least the Daily Show has newspaper clips, video evidence, and cited sources. Sorry about the aggressive approach, but somebody’s got to give this guy the Jack Nicholson treatment in A Few Good Men and maybe he’ll crack–or fess up that it was all hogwash. I figured since our last go around on this subject, you wouldn’t be back for awhile.

    Quick question…

How long do you think it will be before Jackie Shipp breaks up with McFarlands Mama? My guess is that her one shot at “True Love” will likely be out the window sometime after….February 5, 2009.

    What do you think?

    BTW, 45-35.

I’ve seen the NYT “story.” I saw it posted on Yahoo and MSN the first day it came out, and I’ve seen the reponses to the story on Orangebloods (and love him or hate him, at least Katchum makes some good points in his reponse). What I haven’t seen is ESPN jump all over the supposed recruiting violations that are alleged in the story.

If, in fact, Texas was guilty of what has been implied, then it would be major news already. As an aggie friend of mine put it, the media would LOVE to bring down Texas. I haven’t seen one story on Yahoo, MSN, or ESPN about this point. I think that if there were some validty, we would have seen a follow-up story on it already.

Now, I haven’t seen everything out there since I’ve been at work all day, but I do keep tabs on news that pertains to Texas football. This “story” seems to be being fought out almost exclusively in the blogosphere. That in of itself is fishy to me.

I’m with the rest of the Texas fans that want to see every part of this story brought out into the light. I’m sure Mack does too. If some unnamed, unassocaited with UT person did try to offer that loan, Texas would be the first in line to correct the situation.

  78. “How long do you think it will be before Jackie Shipp breaks up with McFarlands Mama? My guess is that her one shot at “True Love” will likely be out the window sometime after….February 5, 2009″

Agreed, after that he’ll go back to being the top to 6x’s bottom. Maybe that’s why he’s over here so grumpy all the time? Just a hunch.

  79. “I have no reason to lie.”

Plausible reasons she has to lie:

    1. She wanted her son to go to OU (for whatever reason, dirty or not) and is surprised that there is an uproar. Now being criticized as overly inserting herself into her son’s decision, she needed a reason to justify keeping the UT coaches out of the house. So rather than blame her overbearing self, she blames the “other”.

    2. She’s dirty as hell, the rumors of a letter from Coach Brown calling out the illicit behavior are true, and she needs to deflect.

    3. She derives some sort of frisson from lying.

Now, she may not be lying. But if she is a liar, then of course she’ll say she has no reason to lie. “I have no reason to lie” is hardly the endgame of a Perry Mason episode.

Although it’s totally unrelated to the JeMarkus thing, I would like to answer 6times re: 45-35.

You’re damn right it’s nice. It’s nice to know that no matter how the rest of this season turns out the better football team (and really the better program at this point) lies here in Austin, Texas.

As I’ve said before, your hype machine may have fooled enough pollsters to get you into the game in Miami, but anyone who really understands college football knows that the better team will be playing in Arizona. Congrats though on your undeserving NC game appearance and Big XII title. I look forward to Stoops’ nightmare scenario unfolding before us in the coming weeks. We’ll beat Ohio State (hopefully by a good margin), and ou will lose their fifth straight BCS game. Then the questions surronding these programs, Should UT have gone?, Can Stoops really not win a big game?, won’t just be coming from Big XII territory, but from everywhere around the country. Face it, the perception around both of these teams and both of these coaches are changing. After we beat you next year (making it four out of the last five) all the pundits will be asking if Brown has Stoops’ number.

See that’s why it doesn’t really bug me when I see all of you sooners on here, because I know why you’re here. You’re guilt ridden because you know you’re in a game you don’t belong, one in which you don’t deserve to be there. You’re guilty because there’s a part of you that know the truth, that if we played you ten times we’d beat you seven or eight. And you’re scared. You’re scared that you’re going to get blown out on a national stage AGAIN. You’re scared that Bobby’s lost whatever sort of magic he once had. You’re scared because you know that the strategic advantage was the only advantage Stoopsie had over Brown and now Muschamp has shifted even that. You’re scared because Mack has won the big one, has gotten even better at recruiting than he was in past, and that ou will never match our facilities. You’re falling further and further behind your hated rival and you can sense it. So I don’t blame you for coming here. I might pity you, perhaps even for reasons that go beyond having to live in Oklahoma; but I don’t blame you. Why not bask in what limited glory you have left?

Oh and congrats on winning momma’s boy. The way things are shaping up you two seem made for each other.

  82. “I look forward to Stoops’ nightmare scenario unfolding before us in the coming weeks. We’ll beat Ohio State (hopefully by a good margin), and ou will lose their fifth straight BCS game. Then the questions surronding these programs, Should UT have gone?, Can Stoops really not win a big game?”

Those won’t be questions. If Texas wins, and OU loses, everybody will be in agreement that the BCS got it wrong. Just like how everybody will agree the BCS got it right if Texas loses and OU wins.

So, yes, if Texas wins and OU loses, Stoops will have the rep of Woody Hayes circa 1976- the guy that once seemed to be the best coach in the country who can’t ever seem to put it all together again no matter how much talent he gathers. The humorless screamer who talks a tough game, but keeps coming up short in the big ones. Yep, Bob Stoops needs this one bad.

  84. flamingmonkeyass said:

    December 29th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

I know he’d never admit to it TaylorTRoom, but I think there’s a part of Bob that’s absolutely terrified at the proposition he’s facing. I think Stoops knows that he’s not just losing battles to Mack Brown, but is in fact losing the war. He knows that the average college football might view him as a better coach than Brown, but with another BCS loss, coupled with another UT BCS win, even that will change. The sooners’ coaching staff I think understands now it isn’t just that Mack’s getting better athletes, it’s the kind of athlete he’s getting. Six or seven years ago, Sergio Kindle and Brian Orakpo would have wound up on the other sideline. Muschamp is only going to strengthen our position.

Looking at from this side of things, should Bradford leave, and I don’t think he will, but should he, now would be the best time for Stoops to make the jump to the NFL. We’re poised to make a big time run again next year, whereas ou is going to be reloading. Unless he likes getting his face shoved in the dirt repeatedly, Stoops should take the bait and get out while he can.

  85. I don’t think the NFL is an option for Stoops anymore. If an NFL team wanted a college coach, why wouldn’t they go for Meyer?

Its good that the vitriol got pumping again yesterday. I really only have 2 comments to the plethora of burnt orange rhetoric thrown my way.

“You’re guilty because there’s a part of you that know the truth, that if we played you ten times we’d beat you seven or eight. And you’re scared.”

No, not really. I am bit surprised that you even gave OU 2-3 victories there. In actuality I’m really confident with the way the both teams were playing at the end of the season, OU wins by double digits if the gam was replayed. I will admit it is an opinion of mine, but one also shared by the pollsters and computers since we were the team selected to play in the MNC. Texas was not chosen.

Also there were several inferrences that somehow OU is scared that Texas is about to become the reigning superpower of college football, Stoops should leave for the NFL and wets his bed at the though of AUSTIN, TEXAS, Mack Brown has ascended to deific heights beyond that of mere mortals. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. I wouldn’t be surprised if BC regulars met up every Saturday night and lathered each other in Bevo fecal matter as you danced and chant around giant effigies of Muschamp and Brown. All your assertions of Sooner doomsday is far from the truth and really laughable at best. I do commend Texas for stepping up and making the series competitive once again. I am sane enough to know and actually write that the OU/UT rivalry will ebb and flow over the years. UT will win a few, OU will win a few and really the games will be decided with a great players (VY) and a losing an important ones (Ryan Reynolds). But go ahead and continue to believe that somehow UT is going to rip off 8 straight over OU and win 7 of 8 BCS bowls. I’ll inform Bob and the staff of the imminent domination of the Longhorns and we’ll call it a day.

When do you think Jackie Shipp will break up the mother? I say he dumps her ass on February 5, 2009. When do you think it will be? Do you think he bangs her throughout the off-season or does he stop jumping on grenades for the team as soon as his Letter of intent has been signed?

I say as soon as that letter has been faxed in. Shipp is gonna fax a “Dear John” letter to McFarland’s Mama and ending her chance at “true love” and the time she spent banging a college football coach.

BTW, is nobody else concerned that some asshole from the NYT is publishing a paper from somebody in High School without permission.

Maybe one of you lawyer types can help me out. Don’t you have to have permission to publish somebody else’s writing?

  89. OU has won 3 Big XII Championships in a row and has landed more of the elite 5***** players in Texas the past few year than Texas yet we are scared?! Lol!
Get back to me when you can win your division.
You have 1 more Conference Championship than Baylor. Yeah, you guys are good.
Good at watching own this league, that is.

  90. As an unbiased Mizzou fan who’s team got its ass handed to it by both OU and Texas, I have to say that OU fans have no room to talk shit when Texas has the exact same number of losses as the Sooners and a head to head victory this season. The only reason you were in the Big XII championship in the first place is a flawed BCS system that no one likes and the Big XII inexplicably used as a tie breaker.

  91. Since73, I gather then that since Mack is 3-1 versus Stoopes and he does have the same number of national titles despite OU have more 5 star talent according to you then the only explanation is Bob is leaving off talent versus the the rest of the Big 12 and Mack and his staff are out coaching and out working the Sooners in head to head games.

Hmmm…where have I heard that before?

  92. In fact 73, in over the last 5 years two guys with lesser talent and have gotten their asses fired have a better record versus Mack than Bob and all his talent. Guess now that Prince and Fran are gone Bob will have to carry his own water.

  93. What do you have to show for that? A t-shirt? We’re your Super Bowl. Of course you get up for us only to crap the bed afterwards.
Meanwhile….OU keeps on winning those beautiful trophies.
Oh, btw: you’re still behind head to head vs Stoops.

  94. In what is Mack 3-1 vs Stoops? Are you looking at the microcosm of the last 4 years? or chance games of shuffleboard at the last 4 big 12 meetings? In the last 10 years (a more representative sample) Mack has a losing recored against Stoops at 4-6 – just an fyi.

  95. this was our rebuilding year. the only impact players would be orakpo and miller and to a lesser extent quan. you have to replace most of your o-line, receivers and might be the 2nd best qb in the big 12, some of your DT’s and ends. We have a better d- coordinator. we have arguably the best qb in the country coming in this year. Our offensive scheme’s success does not need linemen to hold And you think we will not dominate you for the foreseeable future.

  96. They give trophies for losing to Boise and WVU? They give trophies for getting beat in 4 consecutive BCS bowls?

Yes 73, you are both right in that Mack is 4-6 versus Bob and Mack has made significant changes in his staff and the attitude around the program. The result is that in the past four years Mack has reversed the trend versus OU and gone 4-0 in the last 4 bowl games.

You are full of shit 73 if you don’t think Stoopes and OU don’t look as much to that game in Dallas as Mack and his staff. Both teams bring it as hard as they can and Mack has gotten the better of Bob 3 of the last 4 times. Hell, this year playing their second best defensive end at tackle, a running back who wouldn’t run over any one at defensive end, a midget at cornerback , and two freshmen at safety Texas somehow stopped the greatest offense in the history of college football.

No Horn fan is happy at the lack of Conference titles, but I don’t think Mack is as well and based upon what I have seen change in this program in the past three seasons I am happy to see the direction things are going.

Enjoy another BCS prison rape and remember that Barry and Bud built their reps on cheating, probation, and multiple national titles. Good to see Bob is keeping the tradition alive in 2 areas.

Boomer, shut the fuck up with your shuffleboard comment. Shit wasn’t even close to witty. Why is 10 years more representative than 5? None of those players are around and if you believe the Texas program now is the same as in the early 2000’s I have some CMO’s and GM bonds I would like to sell you.

BTW, since the coward 6Xdicksinthemouth refuses to answer my question, we’ll see if you have the scrot to answer:

How long do you think it will be before Jackie Shipp breaks up with McFarlands Mama? Will it be right after the Letter of Intent is faxed in? or will it be a little deeper in the off-season?

Let me know what you think.

    Also…45-35…all year…this will never change…45-35.

  103. Ahhhhh, yes–the UTards have resurfaced once again. It seems foul language and idiotic comments are your mating calls. I know you guys haven’t even thought of this, but what if TEXAS LOSES TO OHIO ST? Then what? Will you be where the Sooners can find you on January 6th? You think Ohio St might be tired of hearing everyone already crown Texas? Tressel’s got just as much to lose as Stoops…that would be classic!! I hope the coaching staff is as blind as you guys–keep talking up your flawless team. Last time I checked, you’ve got a game to play too.

That would be great or the Sooners if you guys have the best QB recruit coming in–maybe his daddy will convince Mack to start him over the QB who should be playing. Any coach who plays Chris Simms over Major Applewhite for 3 years is capable of any blunder or coaching snafu at any given moment. Good luck in a bowl game that actually counts, and better luck next year turning the tide by not winning another Big 12 Championship!! That should put Stoops in his place…

    Boomer,

Do you think 103 years would be a more representative sample since 10 is so much more representative than 5?

Texas leads the overall series 58–40–5

Here is another excellent point for the OU faithful:

The University of Texas has been placed on probation by the NCAA 3 times in the history of the program, no post-season bans and no other infractions resulting from probationary stay.

The University of Oklahoma (never quite certain how UO turns into OU unless there was some sort of inbred fueled dislexia going on even at the beginning) has been placed on probation 6 times since 1956 for a total of 9 years (the most recent in 2007 which involved vacating an entire season (2005)), 4 years of television bans and 3 years of post-season bans.

Can you really come on here and play innocent?

    6xBig12Champ,

I hope you do not have a single mother that can be preyed upon by someone with only his own interests at heart. Karma is a cruel bed partner.

If it walks like a Longhorn, talks like a Longhorn, and stinks like a Longhorn, it’s a Longhorn!! Maybe Texas is responsible for warping his mind–I wonder if he had any idea Canseco was juicing when he was in the Rangers’ front office? There’s no way–everything in Texas is clean!! JustAGirl- It is my duty to remind you this….45-35. Sweet.

  117. Who is calling who names now? Again, GW had little political power while he was governor and the last time I check Texas only has 26 electoral votes so it isn’t possible for Texas to have “saddled” the world with the worst president in history. That would be on the hands of a great number other states, but let’s not have small matters like details get in the way.

Additionally, you sure seem to know a great deal about the number of trailer parks in Oklahoma and I find it funny that you mention hillbillies. I believe the proper nomenclature would be rednecks and we are damn proud of it. Funny thing is that this backyard state somehow is home to space program, pioneers in heart surgery, one of the world’s leaders for cancer research, second largest number of live theaters in the US, have a few authors, saddled the US Congress with Barbara Jordan, have a university that is among the leaders in cold fusion research, and a few other things. Guess the only thing for me to say is “FUCK OFF”.

  118. He got all his power from his ties to the north east.you fools were dumb enough to vote him in. Travis county, where UT is located, voted against Bush. You fools accuse of us being liberal and now you accuse of putting bush in the white house. Most importantly he never was a longhorn; hence it is not relevant to the conversation. Longhorns are not associated with trailer parks and hillbillies;OU is.
i give up. this moron is incorrigible.

  119. However you want to candy-coat it JustAGuy–how about Texas is responsible for cultivating and nurturing the biggest redneck (who calls Texas home) and worst president the world has ever seen? GW is a Texan, period. I’m sorry, but he’s one of the mighty contributions Texas will forever be remembered for–I’m afraid second number of live theaters and Barbara Jordan are footnotes after the mental midget Texan decided to ruin the country. But I’m proud of you–you finally admitted that jorts and mullets run a’plenty in Texas. And with class I might add…

Boy, I really hope little McFarland doesn’t cry when his new daddy drops him on his ass in a month, just like his old daddy! Tee-Hee!

On the way to Oklahoma, she will see signs that read, 45-35 up and down I-35.

As a reminder to all Soooner Homos on this Texas message board: 45-35.

    FMA,

As I stated, it is my opinion that OU would beat Texas by double digits if they played TODAY. Its cool you can hang your hat on the game in October, spout 45-35 ad nauseum, neutral field, et al. I’ve never stated anything to the opposite to take away from that and it really doesn’t bother me at all. They bounces went UT’s way that day, but I woke up the next day to realize the season was not over. So go ahead and keep self medicating. I really doubt it is on the minds of many Sooners as they make their way to SoBe.

Your claim that I post here because I am scared is also comical. Really the main reason I am here is was to smoke out the “truth” from Trips regarding the inducements offered by OU. When he failed to produce anything beyond the largess of blogging ghost stories and typically ill-informed rhetoric, I thought I would hang around and really digest what it means to be Longhorn. So far you all appear to be a literate and educated bunch, but most times it is hard to see around the hyper-inflated self-worth, overbearing ignorance, stereotyping as a defense mechanism, and my shit don’t stink pompous attitude that is obviously intrisic to growing up a Texan. Must be cool to be you.

  126. 6x –
you would not get UT without being on the 40 acres. some of the best professors. diverse student population.the best research facilities.
the self worth comes from the pride that being at UT and living on the 40 acres is a joy few universities can match; definitely not a third rate university in the state of Oklahoma.

  127. Old hippie is obviously not a person of power in Texas because I know plenty of people who played at OU that are from Texas that I bet could write a check for you. Show me one good example of a person who went to OU from Texas yet cannot get a job in Texas and ill wire you your month wages.
Mack tried it use that on Macfarland ans Stoops shot his ass down. Its petty. It shows fear. It shows the inability to compete against a known power.
That’s why we are about to double you in NC’s.
Just like we do in all other player category.
Look it up, does Texas have anything over OU except for scenery smack and Duke like requirements? Lol.
    Mmmkkkk…
Face it, OU owns this league just like we did in the Big 8 and Texas people thought it would be different but guess what, you all are still watching OU own whatever league we decide to participate in.
If I were you I would join like the Mountain League or something. Winning Championships is just not your style in this league.

  128. since73:
At least three of ou’s championships are illegitimate, ie, ou cheated to win them. it’s common knowledge that ou populated its team with crooks, rapists, drug dealers and murderers to win during the switzer era, and in doing so stained its honor. but keep on telling yourself whatever you need in order to validate however it is you live and whatever it is you live for, buddy. i’m not here to disabuse to the point of suicide. your favorite football team’s clearly all you have in this life.

One other thing we have going for us: Series record. Oh and that little matter of beating you and being a better football team than you this year.

6Times – I’m curious as to why you think the outcome would be any different. Did you guys suddenly find a defense since your last game? Did Mike quit Arizona and come back to shore up that defense of yours? Or is it that you’re more confident that the offense that struggled against Texas in the 2nd half of our game would fair better, given that our defense has improved every game under Muschamp?

  133. Colby,

If you want to talk about the illegal goings on of a team, you need to look no further. How many players at UT have been arrested in the last few years?

    Henry Melton
    Sergio Kindle
    Andre Jones
    Robert Joseph
    Tyrell Gatewood
    James Henry
    Ramonce Taylor
    Tarell Brown

Mack’s crew had upwards of 10 arrests following the championship up to this point. Several more were cited or charged but not arrested–so is THIS how you run a clean program? Book’Em Horns wasn’t just a clever name given by Sooners, it was uttered in Austin every other day last year!!

Look, can you can the Ryan Reynolds injury excuse nonsense. I know that’s what Stoops hung his hat on, but injuries are part of the game. UT had to play without two key offensive talents in that game- Blaine Irby (our only pass catching TE), and Fozzy Whitaker (our only speed back). You had Reynolds for over half the game, and we didn’t have them for any of the game.

I can edit comments, and when I see a Sooner mention Reynolds’ loss again, I’m revising it to have the poster acknowledge that Texas’ dominance would have been greater with Irby or Whitaker.

Taylor, UT averaged 4 yards per play with Reynolds in, and 8 yards per play after he was gone. Obviously, his loss was a determinative factor. But was it the real cause? READ THIS NEXT PART CAREFULLY!!!

This has less to do with Reynolds, and everything to do with a failure of the OU coaching staff to have an adequate backup ready for a guy working on experimental bionic knees. Nic Harris was the starting MLB against KU for Christ’s sake. Both Mike Balogun and Austin Box filled in extremely well for Reynolds as the season went on, but neither was prepared to take over in the biggest conference game of the season. Why?

No offense, but Blaine Irby sure as shit isn’t a Mackey Award candidate. Nor was he ever going to be. He’d be the third best TE on OU’s roster behind Gresham by a long shot and probably even behind Eldridge (who is a far superior blocking surface). His injury was the best thing that happened to the Texas offense. It forced UT to get creative with a 4 WR set that made Venables melt the fuck down.

Fozzy Whitaker wouldn’t have done shit as a speed back, because he’s frankly not that fast. Percy Harvin, he ain’t.

Taylor, Texas didn’t dominate a damn thing. You gave up almost 400 yards passing and 5 TD’s to Sam Bradford. That’s domination, but not by Texas.

The difference was coaching and special teams. Muschamp could’ve lost any elite player including Orakpo or Kindle, and I guarantee he has a backup ready to go right then and there. It took Venables 4 weeks to get someone in place for Reynolds.

As for special teams, consider two things.
    1) UT got 16 points off of special teams play. Three FGs, and a KR TD.
    2) UT’s punter averaged 46.5 yards per punt. OU’s punter averaged about 34 yards per punt.

That game was lost for OU by the OU defensive coaching staff. UT took advantage well, and deserved to win.

  140. NateHeupel said:

    July 13th, 2009 at 9:59 pm

My point about special teams toward the end goes back to superior coaching on the UT sideline before and during the game. UT did all the little things right, and OU couldn’t trust its kicker to make a FG from more than 25 yards out with any reliability. Nor could OU trust its kick coverage team to cover for a kicker who put no hang time and no distance on kicks against anyone.
