Some Random Thoughts…

Posted by EyesOfTX on December 22nd, 2008 under Football

  • Katy High has now won six state championships in its history, five since 1995.  Southlake Carrol has gotten tons and tons of attention for its incredible record in three different classifications over the last 15 years, and deservedly so.  But Katy’s record is almost as impressive, and five championships in 14 years ranks them among the five or so best programs in the state’s history.
  • I can’t help but be amazed that there are still Longhorn fans out there longing for the signing of Russell Shepherd instead of Garrett Gilbert.  All Gilbert has done is lead his team to 30 consecutive wins, two straight state championships, and rewrite the record book for quarterbacks in the state of Texas.  Gilbert is the most impressive HS quarterback I’ve ever seen in person, a kid who is ready to play at the next level today.  If Colt McCoy weren’t coming back for his senior season, I have no doubt that Gilbert would immediately step in as the team’s starting quarterback.  He is almost certainly the most talented recruit Texas has ever brought in at the QB position, in terms of being ready to play at the next level immediately, and yet we still have fans questioning the wisdom of his recruitment.  Amazing.
  • Boy, do the Cowboys suck, or what?  All the focus following the game was on Romo and his idiotic INTs in the first half, and that attention was deserved.  But seriously, can anyone out there remember a team locked in a battle to make the playoffs that gives up back-to-back rushing TDs that cover a total of 159 yards?  I mean, everybody in the freaking stadium knew who was going to get the ball on those two plays, and the runner was barely even touched on either of them.  You can blame a lot on Romo, but you can’t blame him for that.
  • I have seen a color announcer who can give Dave Lapham a run for  his money in terms of rank annoyance, and his name is Deion Sanders.  Good lord.
  • Ok, you’re Gary Kubiak, your team is down by 11 with a little more than half a quarter left to play.  You have a 4th and a few inches at the Raiders’ five yard line.  Make those few inches against one of the 3 or 4 worst teams in the NFL, and you have four downs to make five yards at get within 4.  So what do you do?  You throw the ball into the endzone.  Incomplete.  Game and season over.  I guess he must have been channeling his inner Mackovic, and didn’t have the QB sneak in the game plan.

  1. When asked last week if the Romo-Witten-Owens soap opera was a distraction, Jerry Jones essentially said,

“Oh no,we love it. This is why I have the press on our plane and why they have offices at our complex. We don’t mind the notoriety.”

That’s all you need to know about the Cowboy’s mess.

  2. Most people wanted both Shepard and Gilbert; not either/or.

  3. Bragg: that’s true, but apparently the coaches ended up with a choice of either/or, whether they wanted to or not. Gilbert was willing to commit early, Shepherd was not. Gilbert is ready to start for a major college team at QB today, Shepherd isn’t remotely there. All I’m saying is that the coaches made the right call, given the circumstances they faced.

  4. well srr50, you’ll notice there was no “soap opera” leading up to the game on Sat and look what happened. I’m not saying, I’m just saying.

    Regarding the Texans’ buffoonery:

It was third down and inches on the previous play. They called a pass play on that down too.

  6. I’ve gotten to where I pay no attention to number of state titles in Texas high school football. There are too many. 10 state champions every year? Silly.

Katy won the 5A-lite title this year. Division 1 was vastly superior to Division 2. Sometimes it’s the other way around.

And I would favor Lake Travis over every other team in the state if they played another game.

    Back at you:

    - I’ve been encouraged by the reports that Gilbert can run the ball with some credibility. He’ll need that skill set to be successful in GD’s offensive scheme. The additional benefit is that he’ll likely (hopefully) pass up John Chiles on the depth chart and we won’t have to deal with this “Q Package” crap any longer.

    - The Cowboys are a mess – not to the Oakland Raiders level, but they’re trying. I believe that Wade Phillips will be sent packing in the off-season. It will be interesting to see whether Jerry Jones can restrain himself and his son from meddling in the teams day-to-day affairs.

    - Speaking of…Jerry Jones is a tacky, preening, redneck head-case, so it should be no surprise that he would choose to add attention-getting malcontents like T.O. to the roster. Perhaps if he worked a little harder to break free of coverage and get open, Romo would throw the ball to him more than three times per game.

    - I’m not a big fan of Roy Williams, either, and I don’t give a damn whether he played for Texas or not. My God, man…quit doing a happy dance every time that you make a catch and gain four yards for a first down.

On Kubiak – he really needs to pare down his responsibilities. He has mishandled replay appeals, wasted time-outs in critical situations, flubbed PAT calls (1 vs. 2), and generally forgotten that Steve Slayton has turned out to be a damn fine running back while continuing to be infatuated with the pass.

It’s no secret that the Texans played a whole lot better on offense during the last month after they quit trying to pass every down and only give carries to retreads like Ahman Green.

Keep your eyes on this guy here, Eyes: they call me “Lapham” because I lap ‘em on the way to the finish line.

I mean, I’ve been announcing too long to get suckered into a reply like this.

That’s what veterans do for you–they’re veterans.

Seriously, from our broadcasting family to your house, Eyes, we want to wish you a very Merry Christmas . . . and that’s from the bottom of our broadcasters’ hearts.

  10. hindsight is 20/20

if either of those passes are completed, its considered a great call.

it was funny though, on 4th, it appeared if they had handed off instead of faked the run, the first down and probably a touchdown would have been the result

No one should ever channel their inner Mackovic.

Unless you’re building a wine cellar.

  12. Jerry Jones has fallen into the trap of managing earnings at the expense of the nurturing and maintaining the brand. You see that every now and then.

    huge,

The calls still would have been stupid even if the passes had been completed.

You can sometimes complete/execute stupid plays to a positive outcome; it doesn’t change the fact that they are stupid calls.

  14. Not only did Katy win in the much weaker Div. II they were overall not a very good team this year. In the second game of their season they got blown out 47-0. I know that teams can improve over the course of the season but when you lose 3 games against teams that are not that great then win a championship some questions need to be asked.

Westlake had the highest winning percentage of any team in the 90’s state or national. Also they won 56 strait district games I believe. They suck now but damn that was an impressive run as well.

  16. As good as Westlake’s run was, they did benefit from playing in a district that was easily in the bottom third of the state in terms of difficulty.

And they still haven’t made it out of the second round in Region II. Right AugieBall?

They just pick on the AISD schools, the big meanies.

As for the highest winning percentage in the nation in the 1990s, I find that hard to believe considering De La Salle in California won every game they played in the 1992-99 seasons.

JJ is listed in most people’s Top 5 quarterbacks for the 2011 Draft. Ideal size, mobile. His accuracy has also improved dramatically. While Sherman runs a ton out of the shotgun, it is still a semblance of a pro offense.

That’s quite a stretch to view the away goals rule as a harkening to the territorial origins of the game. The game is now split between matches taking place entirely in one town or the other.

The rule is a bad one, IMO. You don’t even have to take it to its logical extreme

There is no question as to why Baylor is favored to beat Texas tonight – they are two teams on completely different paths since January, and Baylor is coming off perhaps its most impressive win of the year, the dunk-filled dismantling of Texas on Saturday. Baylor hasn’t beaten Texas three times in the same season since 1981-82. Can we break that streak tonight?

Rather than some esoteric discussion of the relative merits of each team, I think it’s relevant to do a quick look at the stats from our first two matchups.

A&M had its pro day this week and it was a damning reminder of where the exiled regime left this program. Not one A&M football player was invited to the 2010 NFL Combine. Pro day featured a depressing cluster of Fran recruits clinging to the dream of earning a living in the NFL.

I’ll comment on that game. The Ags didn’t quit because, unlike their customary curb-stomping against K-State and OU, they actually had some early success where they scored on a broken coverage. Secondly, no doubt, Jerrod Johnson was on fire. If he plays like that every game next year, the Ags are going to be tough
