Patrick, from a personality standpoint Clausen isn’t exactly likeable. I think the perception of him having leadership or other intangible issues is really tied to the fact that many people just don’t like the kid. The same discussion went on to some degree amongst the ND fan base his 1st two seasons.

Fair assessment, Applewhite. Might add that Tech DLine and safeties are about as crucial to 10-0 as the OLine and Crab.
Regarding out-executing Bradford, what would you say was the biggest factor in UT forcing him into to INT’s? Pressure up the middle? I’m hoping we get some of that, too.

He only threw one against us, the last one was on a Hail Mary at the end of the game. That one was a good play by Earl Thomas with pressure from our DL around their fat OTs. Even with getting good consistent pressure on Bradford, he was still pretty dam good against us. OU will score at least 35 points, I just don’t know how many Tech will score.

I would also suggest that Texas’ long term issue here is that Davis has now decided to show up to a gun fight with a Colt .45 and a pack of menthols, while teams that have been doing this for a living are rolling with a gatlin gun and smoking Cubans. I’m assuming Applewhite takes over before Davis screws up Gilbert. Hopefully, for your sake, he’s too good to screw up or somebody on your coaching staff has an idea of what they want to do on the OL. You better have a contingency plan against good defensive lines. I’m not convinced Davis does other than letting Colt scramble around. Maybe Gilbert’s a runner too.

dick,
No need to worry. You’re not going anywhere. You’ll still win 10 games a season and be in the hunt every 4 or 5 years. I think Leach might be able to chip away at Brown’s dominance over him, and be more competitive year in and year out, as he’s able to recruit better talent.
dedfischer said:
November 21st, 2008 at 10:20 am
I thought Stoops did a good job in the early years because he had a significantly larger amount of talent than Tech. As Leach has closed that gap, he’s had more trouble. One thing Stoops understands is that you have to stop production by the RB position to slow down the Tech offense. He’s come out slow the last 3 years, but does a good job of adjustments in the 2nd half. I also think he had a lot better DL than Tech had OL, which I don’t think is the case this season given he’s rolling with backups. We’ll maybe Beal’s better than I’ve seen.

One of the side benefits for me this Saturday should Tech lose as they always do in Norman and Austin, is that new “experts like dedfisher will get off their high fucking platforms and resume their positions as middle of the packers where Tech naturally resides.
Davis, for all his his faults as an OC, for all the angst he has caused several of us with some of us game plans and play calling, is highly respected for his role in the development of QBs at Texas. Anyone that isn’t aware of that simply does not know what they’re tlaking about.
After Harrell and Crabtree move on after this year and several of the OL graduate, it will be nice to see Tech next year and several more afterwards, competing with OSU for 3rd in the Big 12 South. We always appreciate Tech beating the Aggies, however.

Chris,
I think Tech’s run defense is the best we’ve had since the Goodner years, primarily due to an infusion of talent (Dixon) and experience (Williams/Whitlock). The unsung hero has been a MLB that actually plays the game right. We haven’t had one of those since Zach Thomas was here. Henley played his ass off against OSU coming back from injury, and OU couldn’t block him last year in Lubbock. I’m hoping he has the same match up this year as it was a favorable one. Even Jake Ratliff looked good against them last year, which is hard for me to type.

I actually think this is a pretty valid point. Stoops gets beat when he’s too cocky. His media quotes seem to indicate that he’s concerned about his defense getting their ass kicked, and even though OU is favored and at home, he’s coaching as an underdog. This is when Stoops is most dangerous. If the same team shows up on Saturday that showed up in Dallas, he’ll get his ass handed to him. I him to more creative things than he’s done in the past to get pressure on Harrell. If they can’t do that, they won’t be able to score with us.

Nobody remembers the Goodner years. Tech doesn’t exactly have a football legacy worth remembering.
Tech does have a better D than OU this year and an equally potent offense. X factors are night game on the road in a cesspool of indifference to class, culture, education, hygiene – an environment the red raiders should feel perfectly comfortable in.
Stoops is 986-2 at home or something like that.
Leach is 1-15 against ranked opponents on the road.
Make that 2-16. Crabtrees don’t give a fucks about records … he just sees balls in the air like Aggies see balls in their face. Batch and Woods will do enough damage in between the 20s.
Tech 41
OU 38
One of thoooose games …
Tech beats Mizzou in a closer game than expected before getting Percy Harvined back to obscurity.
RRR said:

What was great about playing UT before OU is that Tech got to so many different looks against quality personnel. UT rushed 4, brought the house, and overloaded the middle. They also did a lot of shifting after the first line calls.
If Stoops has thought of something different from anything Mushchamp tried, I’d be shocked.
So it doesn’t surprise me that he’s playing the underdog. If he’s not bringing anything new schematically, then he’s trying to get his defense to do a few things really well, have a lot of confidence, and play fast.
Sounds like Ruff.

A huge wild card is whether the refs call holding on Tech. This is what makes this game hard to gamble on. I expect the refs to favor the home team so the stuff in Lubbock was not surprising but this game being in Norman could change things. Since OU holds just as bad if not worse, the refs may just not call it on either team.
Also, serious question for the Techsters, what do you think the effect of this game being on natural grass will have on Tech? What is your experience on this surface this year?

There is no margin of victory big enough that Tech fans can’t find an excuse for why they lost. You would have thought after so many years of beat downs that Tech would run out of them. The problem dedfisher is that you win for the first time in like 5 or 6 years, in the last second and then strut around the place like you beat us 56 to 17 or something. I believe you yourself has used the word “dominate” when describing aspects of tech’s win. You’ll excuse a few of us having a hard time swallowing that, given that you were quite literally a fluttering int away from chocking away your biggest game ever.

tech’s OL holds better than ou’s DL can compensate for…and the reverse is not true, and it doesn’t matter anyway because ou sucks in the back 7 on D…game tt, albeit a close one…

Of course having said that I hope tech just mudholes the shot out of ou Saturday. And should they play anyone other than Texas for the nc I’ll probably pull for them. You’re also one of the more savvy posters on here ded, despite your bias regarding the Texas game. Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t contribute quality to this site because obviously you do.

I never did get why that rubbed so many people the wrong way. I was careful to include all appropriate disclaimers about bias in that game, yet no one seemed to take it with a grain of salt. Sorry, if I offended. Unbiasedly, no we didn’t just toss you around as described, but there’s no question that Tech won the battle on the line of scrimmage with our DL vs. the UT OL. That wasn’t too much of an exaggeration and my biggest concern for Texas in a matchup with an SEC front. If they had trouble with Tech, then I am a bit concerned about a matchup with Bama or Florida’s front 4. Although, Florida is very young. Either that, or Tech’s DL is better than I thought. I’ll let you decide. I rubbed it in enough for a couple of days, and then let it rest, and moved on. Yet somehow my bias is mentioned around here about 2 or 3 times a week. It’s now my stick around here, and I’ll play the role appropriately as to provide sufficient rhetoric for future posts and the 2009 game. I’ve been doing my best to avoid breaching the subject, but it keeps rearing it’s ugly head.

C’mon you don’t understand why we’ve become obsessed over it? Were the same fan base that still gets riled up about espn throwing their support behind USC in ‘05, and that’s after we took home the crystal. Sometime I think we dislike losing more than we like winning. I think a part of that is our expectation that we’re going to win every game. Mayhap that’s one of the reason so many of our opponents’ fans dislike us.

“Sometime I think we dislike losing more than we like winning.”

“To say that your loss to A&M was no fluke but your loss to Texas Tech was, takes a special kind of stupid. Not just a; I was born stupid, kind of stupid. I’m talking about a stupid you really have to practice and work on, kind of stupid.
You guys need to be honest with yourselves and admit that Texas Tech beat UT; No Fluke, No excuses, just a straight up beating.”
this made me laugh.

Texas Tech was so lucky that night. (Spoken as the UT helicopter lifts off from the American Embassy).
