Looks like some of them were shamed by some of the media scrutiny. Still, not a very compelling lead for us. An OU victory over Tech while we’re on bye creates the possibility for backsliding.
By the way, don’t look now, but UTEP and Florida Atlantic are now .500 at 5-5 and Rice comes off idle at 7-3 with a chance to win their league.
I now turn this over to our esteemed computer nerds.

I don’t think JCB is going to sit at the end of the bench though. He needs to understand what his coach and team needs. Better sustained effort, better ball protection, and better defense. He has offensive skills that someone like Justin Mason just doesn’t possess, but yet lacks the physical talent

Yeah, but here’s the thing — you have to have some way to resolve draws. Endless extra time is impractical, because these games are played in the midst of regular league and domestic cup features — you just can’t play that much extar football. Penalty shots are even more arbitrary than away goals.

In 2 weeks we’ve gone from down 63 points in this coach poll to being up by 17, and all that happened was Texas beat Baylor and Kansas while OU bludgeoned A&M.
I think the coaches get it now.
The weekly BCS is out now and we’ve increaed our lead over OU significantly and in all the 3 parameters that make up the BCS tally.
I get that things can change, but I would rather be in our spot today as opposed to OU’s if both teams win out in the regular season.
Looks more and more that Texas has the edge in a 3 way tie.
Cimarrones said:

I think you can take that a step further and say that all that we really need to happen is for OU to beat Tech.
Even if we’re in a two way tie with Tech and they go and win the Big 12, we’ll likely be ahead of them in the computers and human polls. Same with OU if they lose to Okie State after beating Tech.
I’m still not convinced that OU has much of a chance to beat this Tech team. This is Stoops worst defense in ten years. Much stranger things have happened, though.
NateHeupel said:

Cimarrones, this is also Stoops’ best offense in ten years.
“I think you can take that a step further and say that all that we really need to happen is for OU to beat Tech.”
If OU lays a beatdown on Tech (not likely, but much stranger things have happened in Norman), UT’s loss to Tech is going to look less justifiable. You need something more specific.
“I get that things can change, but I would rather be in our spot today as opposed to OU’s if both teams win out in the regular season.”
Texas fans should know better than anyone that the BCS is a “what have you done lately” system. If OU, Cincy and TCU win out, OU will be 11-1 with 4 wins over 10 win teams, and two wins over top 15 weeks in the last two weeks. Texas will be finishing out against nobodies.
UT needs OU to beat Tech and OSU, but by very close margins. OU’s offense is going to keep them in every game.

My ratings have OU as a 4.5 or 5 point favorite and Sagarin has them as a 4.5 point favorite. So, yes, the 7 points seem high as an opening line. I think there’s a lack of respect for Texas Tech on the road combined with Stoops’ much-publicized 59-2 record in Norman.

The week before Tech played UT, they travelled to Kansas and beat them 63-21.
In the last five games, here are the points OU has allowed.
vs Texas (45)
vs Kansas (31)
vs Kansas St. (35)
vs Nebraska (28)
vs Texas AM (28)
I like Tech to at least cover this weekend, maybe even win.

Ou’s defense is not up to this task – - – unless they can figure out how to get to Harrell given the holding non-enforcement in the Big 12.
For the same reason, I do think OU will score a lot of points on Tech.
Safe bet is the over.

Tech’s offense scored 30 on our defense in regulation. They scored 31 on Nebraska in regulation. Both at home.
They are not as unstoppable as you’re making it sound. 30 or 31 points isn’t going to get it done on Saturday. I don’t think they’ll score only 31, of course, but it’s not unfathomable.

One point I was making was that Tech beat Kansas like a drum the week before the biggest game in Tech history. That shows good coaching & strong focus by the team.
Also, the Tech defense held Kansas to 21 points, 2nd lowest of the year for KU. Texas being the lowest.

I sure as hell can’t make the computers when they have TT #1 when they played two 1-AA’s plus SMU and Nevada non-con. Stands to reason that if they beat OU and Baylor that they’ll stay #1 in the computers. Hmmm….guess Sooners better win Saturday.
I don’t know what’s going to happen. Certainly the highest stakes game in Norman since 1 v. 3 Nebraska in 2000 and before that OU-Miami in ‘85?(first home game of my freshman year).
60-2 has to count for something, but in one game on one day doesn’t mean anything. And, our defense has been better the last two weeks, much better.
I like our chances, but that’s not trash talk. I’m four cities in four days so I’ll check back with y’all on Friday.

You guys outsource your computer nerdness to us, I believe.
We have spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out if OU will pass UT with wins over OSU and TT. I don’t think it is knowable.
The computers are going to be very, very close, so it is up to the humans, and a not insignficant number of those humans will know that they control who plays in the Big 12 championship game. Those voters tend to get down to brass tacks then. If many think that “OU is one of the two best teams in the country right now” that might be enough to push OU ahead.
On our National Championship Game Predicatron allows you to put in your own estimate of chances that OU passes UT in the BCS.
