Buck Burnette leaves team

Posted by Huckleberry on November 5th, 2008 under Football

“due to violation of team rules.”

Houston Chronicle blurb here

Reality is apparently that the violation of team rules involves posting something on his Facebook page that wasn’t very nice to Barack Obama. To say the least. But there are NO POLITICAL POSTS ON BARKING CARNIVAL, right?

  1. Excellent tags.

That was seriously the dumbest fucking thing I’ve ever seen. You have a bunch of black teammates and you post this as your Facebook status? As in, what all these guys are going to see right when they sign in?

I know he just got a text and thought it was funny, but deciding to put it on the internet is still ridiculously brainless.

Apparently, the Secret Service has removed him. With extreme prejudice:

  4. So what did Buck say? Was it racist?

  5. there is a thread on hornfans in the west mall forum that discusses what was said.

  6. someone:

Are you sure? I just looked and didn’t see anything about buck burnette. I’m just wondering, did he say something racist or was he just against the politics of Obama?

If you have a link, please post it.

  7. Found a discussion of this in the “on the field” section of Hornfans. Buck said something like:

“Hunters gather up, we have a Nword in the white house”.

  9. Nword? Does buck have something against Scandenavians and a general spelling problem?

Students tend not to comprehend that the internet is public.

Haven’t seen the material, but my sense would be that a cooling-off period would open up the possibility for a public apology and reconciliation. That would probably be a better life lesson for everyone than a permanent shunning.

  11. Well this is a damn shame. I went to high school with Buck and was proud he was on the team, but I had noticed some similar comments on some of his pictures when Obama visited the Horns earlier the year. It’s nasty to see some of that negative, backwards thinking.

Hopefully he gets his head on right; he looked to be groomed for starting center position coming up here.

  12. “What did he say?”

“He said the sheriff is near.”

    Damn flamn blamn it!

    Great Blazing Saddles reference!

  14. JMO, but as a white parent with African American sons and grandchildren, the appropriate thing to do would have been to help the young man work through his issues rather than banning him.

Hell, I caught the boys trying to teach their sister (who is white) how to call other blacks “niggah” without offending.

I blew a gasket and grounded everyone, but I worked them through the issues, not banished them to live in the garage.

  15. BiggUggly,

Someone can help him work through his issues. But not while he gets a free ride for playing on a team of which he just alienated himself from.

  16. Did not see what was actually posted, but Mack always says that we are a family and a parent’s love should be unconditional. Most people, and Mack is obviously among that group, lack the courage to face issues when those issues are not politically correct.

You cure prejudice with love, not revenge.

  17. And exactly what makes you sure that Mack has kicked Burnette out of his life?

Burnette will no longer play for the team. I seriously doubt that Mack will no longer talk to or help Burnette.

  18. Here is what Burnette looks like now and what he’ll look like after Brown helps him.

  19. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO FREEDOM OF SPEECH YOU COMMIES

  20. “Hunters gather up, we have a Nword in the white house”

The word he used was “coon” and not the Nword. There was a screenshot of his facebook page linked to hornfans On the Field page.

  21. Well Mack Brown is going to look positively silly when the White House Press Secretary announces there was a raccoon infestation in the East Wing and that exterminators were called in. However Burnette was incorrect, because calling hunters would be a severe overreaction to raccoons. Nessie, MAYBE.

Doesn’t Buck know that Mack donated to Obama’s campaign? We T sips will not stand for conservatism of any kind!

Why would people assume this is a first time offense? Give Mack the benefit of good judgment, as he has earned it.

  24. I guess he won’t upgrade to the bigger yacht.

  25. What a freaking dumbass. Nice work, Mack.

  26. Somehow I doubt this was the first time ole Buck has done something like this.

“Hopefully he gets his head on right; he looked to be groomed for starting center position coming up here.”

When was that going to happen? After Chris Hall graduates? Won’t Mr. Klu Klux Klan be graduating at the same time as the current starting center?

  28. the fact that the word was coon makes the “joke” a little more palatable.

    i like shooting raccoons.

  29. The Tres Leches said:

If he stayed on the team, I could see this causing a problem with team unity and recruiting and we all know how important Mack values those two things.

  30. That shit is unacceptable. Mack did the right thing.

  31. Like joking about a bomb at the airport, you don’t joke about shooting the president. I don’t think Mack had any choice but to dismiss him. Buck may have broken the law:

Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.”

Pretty broadly written. The Secret Service can certainly has a lot of leeway.

Plus, and more importantly for the Horns, the black guys might not take too kindly to Buck’s comments.

  32. Coon is just as bad as nigger.

I’m glad Brown is spending the $25,000 a year to nab idiots like this.

I’m surprised somebody like Orakpo hasn’t already beat the living shit out of Burnette.

BatesHorn gets it.- It doesn’t matter if he used the “N word” or “Coon”. There should be no room for that level of ignorance in today’s society or at least on our Football Team.

Anybody who thinks this kind of behavior is corrected with “Love” or “Hugs” needs to move back to California. This is the kind of thing that gets corrected with a Steel-Toe Boot right in the ass.

As for the Secret Service, I’d take this as a direct threat to the president and treat it as so. Straight up Felony.

We do have FREEDOM OF SPEECH, but we do not have FREEDOM FROM CONSEQUENCES for the stupid shit that we say. If you want to make a “Al Qaeda” type internet threat towards our President, I say you need to go to jail, just like any other terrorist (Domestic or International).

  34. Ketch thinks this could end up as a national news story. There is no doubt that Mack did the right thing.

  35. I think Mack played it right and it’s a shame. Also, some posters on this thread made me laugh audibly, which I hate myself for doing.

  36. I’d imagine Buck is safer not being on the team anymore.

  37. posting something on his Facebook page that wasn’t very nice to Barack Obama.

Like saying hunters should shoot him? Uh, yeah.

And while we’re on the subject, did Sage Rosenfels have stripes or horns? I get my Polish Jews confused with my Russian Jews all the time.

I’ll hang up and listen to your answer.

  38. Maybe they should get Forrest Gump’s mom to take care of the “coons”?

  49. I’m a cajun. People call me a coonass. What the hell is the big deal these days?? Tell people to kill me??? That’s different altogether.

    Stupid, yes!!! Overreaction?? YES!

  50. Orangechipper, Buck could have called him “Mr. President-Elect” and the insinuation that Buck wanted to shoot him would have still gotten him kicked off the team. The slur is secondary to the Secret Service.

  51. Stupid, yes!!! Overreaction?? YES!

Actually he should be glad if he doesn’t get a visit from the Secret Service.

Unfortunately, he hit the trifecta: a racist comment, while also mentioning guns and a President-elect.

Ever since 1963 the Secret Service had not found the humor in any comment that refers to eliminating a President by any means that includes violence.

Maybe we should round up all the hunters and go hunt a cajun.

No big deal right? Probably not. Until some ignorant redneck who agrees with your line of thinking shows up at your door with a gun.

Buck’s bigoted ass is not immune from the consequences of his SPEECH, whether written or spoken. Frankly, he should have his ass kicked and then the Secret Service should send him to Jail.

How is this any different than some dickhead hiding in a cave in Pakistan, threatening our President? It’s the same damn thing. Just because it comes from a good ‘ol boy from Texas don’t make a shit of difference. A threat, is a threat and should be taken seriously and treated accordingly.

  53. Why the fuck does shit like this keep happening to us?

Over 100 Division 1 teams and we have the idiot that wants to do something funny on Facebook.

  55. Free speech is all well and good, but this bordered on a threat, and playing on a team is a privilege, not a right. Coach Brown did the absolute right thing in getting Buck out of there. The team couldn’t stomach him being around after that sort of comment.

You people are all missing the point. Buck is now in the minority, so he should be allowed to say or do whatever he wants to do including, but not limited to, the following:

    1) start his own tv station called “White Entertainment Television,”
    2) start his own beauty contest for Miss White America,
    3) start a gang of hooligans with socialist Islamic-flavored overtones called the “White Panthers,”
    4) Bitch and moan because someone puts the likeness of an old white woman on a bottle of pancake syrup,
    5) Mindlessly vote with a bloc of over 90% of his white brothers & sisters for the candidate of his choice,
    6) Be used by a group of elitest north-eastern black politicians to vote in said voting block to get elected over and over again because he is so gullible to think that these elitest politicians have any interest in ol’ Buck.
    7) He and his future generations bitch and moan for centurys to come that they have been living in desolation and squallor because Mack Brown kicked him off of the team; therefore, Mack and all of his descendants owe him for all of their suffering and destitution — even though other groups of folks had been enslaved and discriminated against through history (e.g. the Jews) and had turned-out just fine.

I’m getting tired of enumerating, but you get the point. Feel free to pick-up with #8 if you would like to opine!

Threatening the president… whole other matter. I bet every person on the dang team has been called names. From short, fat, skinny, weak, stupid, etc. It shouldn’t be more serious just because its racial in nature. Again, I’m hoping hes out because of a threat and not because of copying a text message.

The University of Texas Athletics Department is a $100 million dollar a year corporation. The football program is the prime producer of that income. Recruiting is the lifeblood of that program.
