blogpoll – Week 9 (10.29.08)

Posted by on October 26th, 2008 under Football

Here’s is this week’s.

Comments and questions below.

Rank Team Delta
1 Texas
2 Alabama
3 Penn State
4 Florida 1
5 Oklahoma 1
6 Texas Tech 4
7 Southern Cal 3
8 Oklahoma State 1
9 Georgia
10 Utah 2
11 Missouri 5
12 TCU 3
13 Boise State 1
14 Ohio State 6
15 Florida State 9
16 Tulsa 5
17 LSU 6
18 Minnesota 7
19 Brigham Young 2
20 Ball State 2
21 Oregon 5
22 South Florida 9
23 Maryland 3
24 North Carolina 2
25 Michigan State 1

Dropped Out: Georgia Tech (#18), Pittsburgh (#19), Kansas (#20), Boston College (#23).

Thoughts and questions:

I really like Ok State. Our panel of expert college football bloggers had UGA and the pokes tied. I pushed the Pokes one higher. I’m calling the win at home in Bedlam. The K State / OU game highlights were potentially instructive, I thought.

Any chance Sparty can beat Penn State? That no conference championship game may be a smart move by the Big Televen.

Do we assume Florida beats UGA next week? Can they beat Bama in the Championship game?

It feels odd to rank Texas Tech, then USC. Who would you put money on if they played in a New Year’s day bowl game? Yeah, me too. Irrespective of next SAT.

  1. I moved PSU ahead of Alabama in my submittal. I’ve been a big fan of both teams all year, but am now convinced Alabama is just too lacking at QB and WR to cope with Florida or Georgia.

PSU, meanwhile, just played the last team that was in its class talent-wise. Given that it’s after October 15, there is pretty much zero chance MSU hangs with them. Had they played in September, it might have been a hell of a contest.

I do think Florida beats Georgia, although Florida could just not show up like they did against Ole Miss.

I like Oklahoma State to just sheep dip OU in Stillwater. OSU is better than OU on defense, and has a running game to go with its explosive passing attack. OU’s defense at this point in time is just not very good at all.

I watched the last quarter of the USC-Arizona game and I give USC’s offense a F-. It was weird. A bunch of big strong guys stumbling all over themselves.

  3. There are eight or nine legit teams and then everyone else. Filling out my ballot from #10 on is brutal each week.

  4. Exactly, HJ. We have Utah ranked 10th yet would we bet on them straight up on a neutral field against the teams behind them? Probably half of them.

  5. Big 12 could have really used an LSU victory over UGA last week. Looking increasingly difficult for a one loss Big 12 champion to make the NCG. Keys are/were a PSU loss or a 2 loss SEC champion. Getting difficult to see PSU laying an egg, and looks likely that the winner of the UGA/UF game will go on to win the SEC east with only 1 loss, pretty much ensuring the SEC champion will have at most 1 loss, and therefore be selected over a 1 loss Big 12 champion.

Of course, as Texas fans, you don’t care much about this, right…..

  6. Get back to us next week GC. We get by Tech and it’s mojitos in Miami.

We lose and our fate is in Huck’s computer.

This the most disappointing team because our talent level is higher than those others.

The DGib/Buckman team was the least talented, barely, after the injury to LaMarcus and Tucker’s suspension.

Last year’s team was the hardest to watch. Just watching AJ Abrams, who I don’t hate as much as most, run around like a

Agreed on Damo being my favorite Longhorn basketball player, I wish him all the best.

This was definitely the worst, by far.

Don’t have time to address each and every comment now, but I wanted to say thanks to everyone for contributing to the site this season. It’s made it a lot of fun to follow a team that’s tough to watch at times.

Also, I wanted to thank you for the kind words as

    Trips,

Great work all year long. Love the passion. The fact that you kept writing these (even around the birth of a child), is fantastic, shows your commitment, and is a little freaky. :-)

I think you showed great restraint in this post. It would have been easier to “go off” on Barnes.

    Pitt rolling Oakland.

Purdue holds on against Siena…I missed it in my bracket, but I’m actually happy for them.

Missouri pulling away from Clemson (68-60) with 7 to play…knew I should have never bet on Oliver Purnell, even if it was against this Missouri team.

Amazingly, game of the day so far might be Wisco/Wofford – 2

That, by the way, was the best thing that’s come out of this basketball season. Knowledge of Magnus’ intimate familiarity with the service and cut-off threshold at Hooter’s as compared to BWW3. Hooter’s — worse food at a higher price than a titty bar, served with jean shorts, cheaper beer, and more stretch

Who thinks that one back could step up and be the go to this year?

I still think it is going to be a by committee approach, but someone could separate themselves this spring. You just never know.

    Basketball:

Texas lost to Wake Forest in the first round last night. Trips Right somehow found the inner strength to do a final post-mortem where he also prescribes a month of defensive drills for baby 2010-11 Texas basketball in order to foster its development into a team that can at least dribble towards the basket.

    BiH,

I actually agree with you. I think the charge and missing the two FTs earlier got in his head a bit. Also, he passed to Mason on the possession earlier which I didn’t think made sense. Mason had his pass knocked out of bounds, thankfully, but it seemed strange to me when

Inter got the team everyone wanted, which will more than likely set up a great semifinal against Barcelona. I believe Mourinho will be putting everything into the Champs League now, even if it means sacrificing Serie A.

Trips, thanks for all your posts this season. I don’t always agree with you but that is sort of the point of a blog isn’t it? Your assesments are usually well-written, informative and fair and where else can you find those qualities?

Why didn’t we call a time out after Wake hit the go ahead jumper?

The clock would have been reset to ~1.5 seconds. Wouldn’t the ball have been advanced to half-court? Or was that rule changed?
