I was not expecting them to be that good. I figured the entire Big 12 was overrated because the good teams all played each other at the end, but OSU brought it. We brought some of it on ourselves, but we’d still win by 20 against 8 other teams in the conference.
So props to OSU. They earned the most important thing a football team, nay, a human can have. My respect.

We’ve now surived one with our B game. That’s a big step.
OSU tried everything within its power to take Shipley away and he still catches fifteen balls. We took a step back finding our third receiver, particularly in the second half. In fact, you could almost hear the wind go out of the crowd and Colt when Malcolm Williams dropped the ball that hit him squarely in the mitts in the third quarter.
With Chykie out, Muschamp had a Hobson’s choice. Do you get beat slowly by Hunter and Pettigrew or do you get beat over the top by Bryant? The problem was magnified by bad fundamental play on the part of the linebackers (how long does it take NortBob to learn not to run underneath blocks?), Blake Gideon (chose pursuit angles like a six year old playing billiards), and Deon “Hit Man” Beasley. That said, OSU’s skill people match up with anyone’s in the country and their D is significantly better than OU’s (post Ryan Reyonolds). I think the Cowboys bend OU over in Backwater.
A healthy Chykie would have given Muschamp more options today. Have no clue why Aaron William is not seeing the field more. We badly need some good luck on the injury front this week.

I do believe that OSU has a better defensive line than OU. They really clogged the line of scrimmage, and had great pursuit outside.
Colt was mortal, but we would have been absolutely screwed without him.
I don’t understand the issue on kickoffs. I wonder if we have the ability to fix it. Obviously, it could have cost us the game.
What a TE. Wow
Unlike others of you, I do think that holding them to 24 is decent, particularly when you consider the field position they had.
I hope this team is not too tired, and that Muschamp has been working all year to bust this pure spread at Tech.

Exactly. Machismo has very little, if anything, to do with successful play calling. Deception is as important as execution. I dislike when Texas runs plays that even I know are coming, e.g. Roy Miller/Cody Johnson Boo-Ya Package. The finest play call was the fake screen/pass to Shipley on 3rd and 9. Scip—what choice did Muschamp have but to stay ugly vanilla? He was stuck with over the top safety help on Dez (Curtis Brown was the only CB to show up). Pettigrew whipped every defender we aligned on him. Staying in the 1 back formation took away any realistic stuntload because we didn’t match up well in island coverage with the personnel we had on the field. Their Oline limited our DLine penetration and took away our big play capability against the run once we tipped our hole cards with non threatening LB alignments.
The two fifty yard kickoff returns gave them two short fields that they turned into two seven’s. The frequency that Hunter was breaking tackles leads me to believe that adjustments or alignments weren’t the main problem until Muschamp fell into the same OKST formation trap that has stumped every UT DC every fucking year. When will we learn that we can’t align the OLB and CB both inside versus a boundary TE? Hell, Pettigrew was wiping out everybody we put in front of him as it was. I don’t disagree that the OKST gameplan put Muschamp into a bind that was ugly—my only question is was it his poor adjustments/calls or his only choice to limit the big plays?

You’re right. No other offense will expose us so well because no other O is so multiple in their capabilities. The thing that bothered me was the fundamental breakdown that OSU’s sensory overload had on our kids. Norton and Bobino continually ran under blocks and Gideon took terrible angle after terrible angle. Those are in-game teachable moments.
I also thought Gundy flat out caught us with substitution errors and punished us on a high percentage of the time when we attempted line games.
I’m not suggesting Muschamp had a great deck of cards to play, but I didn’t like all of his bids. Perhaps I’m being overly harsh or maybe I don’t have to pay the piper when you leave Bryant in single coverage.

I had to go out to watch the game, so I didn’t get a chance to rewind the tape. So forgive me if I make any mistakes based on just memory.
Our defense sat back in nickel all game, and got whipped at the line of scrimmage. The front seven was having a hell of a time getting off blocks to make tackles.
We had 6 in the box, and they had 6 blockers. We are lucky that we held them to what we did with those kind of numbers. For a team that runs the ball that effectively we should have 7 in the box, but we can’t cover man to man, so we were stuck! I would be interested if the GP would have changed if Chykie was healthy? Oh well….. guess that will be answered another week.
Our linebackers looked completely lost all day. I don’t know what the hell Sergio was doing! I do know that Bobino needs to quite shooting gaps. He consistently fires into a hole where the running back isn’t, leaving a big hole on the edge for the RB to trot through. I was not impressed!! The secondary, however, played fairly well for what they were up against. Gideon looked like a fish out of water though. Come to think of it, he is the only secondary player that I don’t recall breaking up a pass yet this season. Correct me if I am wrong.
Overall I think that was our down game…… I hope we don’t have another one!!

Scip—agree about the MLB’s but it’s not unexpected because one of them has gone underneath blocks or just plain ran through empty gaps for four years running. I hope the lack of seeing any aggressive ground games for the entire season hurt Blake’s decision making pursuits but I’m thinking he was overloaded with thinking instead of just playing like you said early. I definitely think Muschamp overamped Kindle’s athletic ability for this week—he didn’t fit at LB against them and hasn’t enough experience to be a full time DE. It a shame that OKST’s formations and weapons kept Muschamp from taking the MLB out of the game and using Sergio in the wild card role that features both Muschamp’s crafty skill and Kindle’s freaky sic ‘em ability. It’s still a great win for the good guys.

Also, against OSU in the 1st Q. And that first half against MU was awesome. I think we have 2 good LBs (and maybe one good fish in Robinson from plano), which is not enough. And we have a bunch of young guys in the secondary. And we have no headhunter safeties like everyone else. Considering all that, and how good OSU is in offense, I like this defensive performance. We will see how many points OU gives up.

I must say that, ATC, my favorite play in football is a fake-to-the-back-and-throw-to-the-TE in short yardage, usually on 4th down.
I agree that the rollout they called was a crummy call, especially when they don’t have a TE they trust.
But they didn’t look they were gonna punch this in, based on second and third down. A QB sneak probably was called for, but after K-State ‘06, it should be ruled out.
If I’d known what they were going to call on fourth down, I probably would have risked the FG.

Bob, why? Even if you had told me with 100% certainty we would not convert the 4th down, I still would have gone for it. I’d rather be up by 4 with the opponent having to go 99 yards in 30 seconds, than up by 7 and having to kick off to them with 30 seconds.
We had a similar situation against Ohio St in 2005 and going for it then was absolutely the correct call, even if Melton did not make it in.

It was a miracle that UT was able to hold OSU to 24 points. Muschamp had to dedicate 2 guys to Bryant and nearly two guys to Pettigrew (because the horns did not have anybody who matched up well with either guy).
I don’t get the idea of putting a small guy on a huge not-fast guy. It has not worked all season.
Does tech have a TE? Do they throw to him much?
The remaining 7 horn players (i.e. not defending Pettigrew or Bryant) had to defend 9 OSU players. Considering OSU has an outstanding OSU run game, that was a challenge. OSU ran for 237 yards on 37 attempts (5.9 YPC). OSU only completed 3 passes to anybody other than Pettigrew or Bryant (of course, one of those 3 passes was for a TD vs Palmer).
The D line and LBs had to deal with a tough run game, which really hurt their ability to pressure the QB. A balanced O really puts a lot of pressure on a D and the horns did very well to limit OSU to 24.
Ship caught 15 passes for 168 yards. That is an all time horn record. Tech will double team Ship.
The horns need another WR to take the stress off Ship and Quan and the TB. BTW, Colt threw 10 passes for 99 yards to Ogbonnaya/Vondrell at the TB position.
What about moving Ogbonnaya to the slot so that Colt has a 3rd WR to throw to (i.e. that he trusts)? Ogbonnaya catches well and would give the horns the big physical receiver they desperately need. Ogbonnaya could block well on screens, block the LB on rollouts and dump passes to the TB, and go over the middle for the tough passes.
Vondrell does a good job of catching the short TB passes and getting YAC. Colt trusts Vondrell enough to throw the short pass to him. Vondrell runs fast and can pass block. Rather than have him run those stretch zone runs, better to just throw him a quick dump pass so that he can get to the outside quicker. Vondrell would run much better if he has a definite hole to aim for.
Malcolm dropped a pass he should have caught. The big man had to do down to his knees to catch it but he should have caught it. There were actually several dropped passes on Saturday.
After a big game against Mizzou, Collins only had two catches vs OSU. Anybody know why?

I’m with Minn. You absolutely go for it.

We have to act like adults on these message boards or they degenerate into immature crap fests. Because of the anonymity of the posters, it is common on many message boards for some guys to act like total jerks.
You don’t have to be disagreeable to disagree.

I would not have kicked the field goal at the end of the game because it might be blocked and returned. Definitely did not want to kick off to OSU again (unless UT just scored a TD).
Cody scored on 3rd down but got screwed by the refs. I think he would have scored again on 4th if he had the opportunity.
I was surprised that Mack chose to roll out Colt and equally surprised that OSU defended it so well.
My main problem with the rollout call is that it gave OSU a chance to force a turnover (fumble or pick) and maybe get the big return.
The run up the middle was the prudent call and, with Miller blocking, likely to succeed.

Not saying it makes sense to kick… I was fine with going for it. But that play… aaaugh!!! I would have kicked rather than knowing what I was going to see.
That makes two times I’ve seen that thing, and the other one was virtually intercepted against OU. Bury it.

I was for going for it, but I don’t know why we didn’t attack the middle again.
Also, props for OSU. Scary team that is ready for prime time. They’ll be fun to watch the rest of the season.

Oh… one other thing. There is no question that Zac Robinson was a better QB than Bobby Reid.

Just got back to Oklahoma from Austin about 45 minutes ago. Let me tell you I had one hell of a time. Awesome stadium/atmosphere great game and for the most part genuinely nice UT fans. My boys and I lived it up on Sixth street after the game, the rooftop at the Blind Pig was out of control. A hell of a long walk and a scary one at night, from Sixth to the Trinity parking garage especially when you are falling down drunk. As for the game itself, on one hand I felt like my guts were ripped out but I was definitely proud of the way OSU played. I think they definitely had their chances to win the game and their were some nervous UT fans around us when OSU took over at the 10 with about 5 minutes left in the 4th. Hopefully they’ll build confidence from this not suffer from some type of hangover the rest of the season. UT’s short passing game is almost unstoppable. Jesus its almost like our corners had never seen a fucking slant route before. Shipley is still open. Anyway congrats on clearing one hurdle. Good luck with Tech next week. Also, I told you guys Pettigrew was good.

Glad you had a good time.
Pettigrew is the biggest freak in a conference of TE freaks.
OSU is damn good. A BCS bowl isn’t out of the question.
OSU is the team I’d least want to play in a rematch.
