Damion James will be better on the perimeter

Posted by HenryJames on October 17th, 2008 under Basketball

According to the Statesman, Damion James spent the month of June practicing with former Longhorn Kevin Durant. It paid off.

“You’ll be surprised at how much I’ve improved on the perimeter,” said James. “My ballhandling. I’ve extended my shooting range.”

Don’t hold back, Damion.

“Kevin coming back is by far the best thing that ever happened to me at UT,” James said.

Good news.

Foreshadowing?

A.J. Abrams said Dogus Balbay is the fastest Longhorn with the ball, and Varez Ward is the fastest without it. Ward is going to be a great defender.

I’d like to also extend a big thanks to Kelvin Sampson. Mensch.

That’s Calvin Simpson. I mean Corvin Simmons. I mean Colwin Johnson. I mean Kevin Simonds.

Barnes’s quotes on the players yesterday were a lot more positive and specific than the stuff that Texassports.com posted a couple of weeks ago.

This is gonna be a fun season.

  4. John Mackovic would have never stood for this.

  5. We’re going to murder people on the boards.

Atchley on the perimeter guarded by a big while Damion posts up a skinny wing inside will be a matchup nightmare.

If Damion is a full time 3, then who sits from our three guards? How Barnes answers this question will have a lot to do with how our season goes.

  7. If he answers it with a Dutch accent, what will that mean?

  8. His comments yesterday seemed to indicate that Mason and Abrams will be the starters.

And he sounded a bit like John Edwards when he said it, for whatever that’s worth.

And of course, he looks like John Grisham.

  10. I’d like to see Damion attack bigger forwards from the triple threat position. He doesn’t need to cross fools over to get to the rim, he’d be most effective as a shot fake, one dribble, explode to the goal forward.

  11. Scip, Dogus or Mason will need to stroke it or teams are going to zone the shit out of us due to the matchup problems you typed about.

Or f’ it, let’s just press the shit out of teams with our depth and run them out of the zone.

  12. I feel bad for Sonics fans, but it sure is nice having KD just a couple of hundred miles up the highway instead of two time zones away.

Though I hope he has a good glazier on his payroll to make up for all the bricks the Okies will be throwing through his windows.

  13. His GF is my employee. She has already promised me tickets. Good ones.

  14. Barnes sounded pretty high on Dexter and indicated that Texas is going to be tough on the inside. That means the front line starters are probably Dex, Connor, and Damion, right? The back court starters are Mason and Abrams.

I’m guessing that when Dex is in the game, he is probably posting up (i.e. he probably won’t be outside too much). Damion, Abrams, and Connor should be shooting fine from the outside so the main question about outside shooting is how well Mason and Balbay shoot.

    Are Texas basketball practises closed?

  15. I’m as excited about the start of Texas Basketball as I have been in a long time – men’s and women’s. The men will go as far as their point guard play allows. Really looking forward to seeing what kind of player Balbay is. Or will we be pleasantly surprised by AJ’s point play? Mason is functional there but not the drought killer DJ was.

That said, I’m not sure this team would beat those other two. They would lose Abrams and let him go 7-15 on 3s and the Abrams team played better

10 weeks ago, Oregon played in the Rose Bowl as Pac 10 champions. Since their loss to Ohio State, the program has been in some kind of bizzaro parallel universe where every headline concerns a player arrest, a firing, or now a resignation.

    Prescient comment, Doc.

I think we learned today that no team is really a mirror image of Missouri, even if Clemson is about as close as it gets. Unless you have significantly better/more talented athletes, if you try to run with the Tigers, you will lose. This team is so much fun to watch in games

Doc, the turnovers seemed to do the trick – there were great big chunks of time when Mizzou didn’t even have to get into a half court offense.

Great to see Ramsey have such a good game and pretty stifle Booker. As Euclid said during the game, even when Mizzou doesn’t play well

“Also because those other teams gave great effort almost every game. This team’s effort was questionable. Dumb and lazy, not a good combo…..”

This is what made this season so bizarre for me. This has never been a problem for Barnes’ teams. But I actually questioned this team’s heart and desire to play together

Travis Ford spent the 2nd half channeling his inner Rick Barnes — lot’s of standing around on offense while one player tries to generate something off a ball screen — then taking a forced shot.

So the Big 12 goes 5-2 in Round One.

This is the worst coached team ever in Barnes era. Period.
Worst defense over the whole season,
Offense sucked big time and the bench coaching was horrible, ransom’s attitude was better then the coach’s overall this season.
Trips write up pre and post better then the game plan and O schemes.

advertisers think they will probably get some deals for the additional 32 games that would be added. The feeling is that an ESPN would disount rates somewhat, since they already have a dual revenue stream — advertising dollars and subscription fees.

It’s all about content for ESPN — even mediocre content.

So far on Day Two, no buzzer beaters, but there was the obligatory #12 over #5 with Cornell thumping Temple 78-65, but the Ivy League school was everyone’s “inside” pick for an upset. Still the day hasn’t come close to generating the action that Thursday had.

I wasn’t trying to say they quit. They just didn’t play hard a lot of the time. Lazy = lack of effort. Example, our transition defense was about 75% effort and 25% stupidity. We loafed down court a lot. The kids didn’t like to lose so they would fight back,

This the most disappointing team because our talent level is higher than those others.

The DGib/Buckman team was the least talented, barely, after the injury to LaMarcus and Tucker’s suspension.
