What Missouri needs to do to win

Posted by HenryJames on October 15th, 2008 under Football

Scipio has taken a look at what Texas needs to do to win on Saturday. So I’m going to take a look at what Missouri needs to do to win.

1. Protect Chase Daniel

If Texas is able to get pressure on Daniel with just their front four, Missouri will lose. Force them to commit more players. Get your left tackle some help with Brian Orakpo. Chip him with a back, double him with a tight end, roll the pocket away, etc. These will be Big 12 officials so you can probably just hold him every play. Whatever works.

When Texas does bring the blitz, make them pay for it. OU had a lot of success with screens particularly when Texas was in nickel. Put the pressure on Texas’ young secondary rather than their experienced front seven.

2. Balance on offense

You have to at least attempt to run the ball so don’t abandon it like you did last week. Texas’ young safeties would like nothing more than to sit in cover two the entire game. They may even concede you some runs. Make Texas bring one of their freshmen safeties up in the box to help with run support. Again, put the pressure on Texas’ secondary.

3. Stop Jordan Shipley and Quan Cosby

There really isn’t anyone else you need to concern yourself with in the passing game. These guys are it. Hell, the last two passes Texas attempted to one of their offensive linemen/tight ends were caught by the opponent.

The four receiver set worked well for Texas last week. When Greg Davis finds something that works, he’ll either beat it into the ground or never run it again. I’d bet on seeing it again.

Oklahoma played too much zone. If you do play zone, Cosby and Shipley are going to find openings. Mix up your coverages. Force McCoy to attempt more than just timing throws. OU continually allowed Shipley to get a clean release from the line of scrimmage and then tried to zone him with the middle linebacker. Don’t.

4. Don’t let McCoy beat you with his legs

Pressure him, but be smart about it. He’s very good at getting around outside pressure, and he throws on the run as well as anybody. His receivers are fantastic with their route running on busted plays. So keep him in the pocket if you can. Try to bring the pressure from up the middle if possible.

5. Play to win

All those who played to win against Oklahoma State step forward. Not so fast, Gary Pinkel. Missouri took their opening drive all the way to the one yard line last week before deciding to go for a field goal on 4th down. I think that set the tone for the game. You’re not going to beat Texas at home by kicking field goals. Don’t be Gary the Retard.

Thoughts from anyone other than steven?

Once you substitute the name of the quarterback, this is a blueprint for everyone, is it not?

I see “timing routes” thrown around a lot in reference to our offense. Is that accurate? It seems we are much more “sit in the soft area of the zone” or “do what feels right while Colt buys time” routes. We’ll have the occassional hitch for Quan, but that seems about it.

  3. At some point we need for one of the young (I’m looking at you Malcolm) receivers to have their “Limas” moment a la Ohio State.

screen , screen, screen. Texas has been playing a lot of man and rushing the passer agressively… if you want to give yourself some room to operate get that front seven thinking about the screens. Follow that up with some delayed handoffs to try to sneak past the pass rush… even if you don’t get a ton of yards, it will help the rest of your offense operate.

  5. Alternate doubling of Cosby and Shipley. Sometimes both in a dime package. You always take away the opposition’s best weapons and make them beat you with their less talented players.

Stoops should ask Venables to move on to another program.

“If Texas is able to get pressure on Daniel with just their front four”

How great is it that we can even have this conversation this year?

  7. Sorry can’t help myself, but this will be a solo post. How about a hope and a prayer, cause other than that or an untimely injury to Colt or a tropical thunderstorm in Austin, Mizzou does not have a leg to stand on, assuming Texas does not go out and lay an egg.

We’ve already played a very similar O to Mizzou in Rice and I do not expect the results to be all that much different from that game. Personally, I don’t believe that the Mizzou O is all that much better than Rice’s. Rice’s QB is about as good as Daniel, if he is not altogether better. Daniel has the stronger arm, but the Rice QB had better mobility and could actually throw on the run, which Daniel is not able to do… …not unless he wants to be throwing up picks.

If Rice had any semblance of a D, they could probably contend for the B12 North title. Their O is a match for just about any team up there. When you look beyond all the BSPN media hype (it is all a marketing ploy after all) and just look at the teams themselves, the performance of the Mizzou O is not all that much better than Rice’s. The Mizzou defense is better and that is where the separation lies between those two teams.

  8. I see “timing routes” thrown around a lot in reference to our offense. Is that accurate? It seems we are much more “sit in the soft area of the zone” or “do what feels right while Colt buys time” routes.

Probably not the right word. It’s timing in the sense that McCoy and Shipley/Cosby are on the same page regarding the route running against zones.

  9. I mostly agree with all of those. I think the pressure with the front four angle has been overplayed some. Yes, obviously that is very helpful. But OU beat us in the championship game by jumping the short stuff from disguised coverages. Same with OSU.

I think one of MU’s best hopes is that Brown/Muschamp are confident enough in how the UT defense has performed to eschew a drastic rework. Stoops had the “luxury” of facing Missouri in the regular season and realizing, no matter how fast your defense, Daniel and Christensen are very good at designing an offense based on pre-snap reads. To Stoops credit, in the championship game he mixed things up drastically. Watch how many times Lofton lined up over Maclin in empty backfield sets, for example.

It takes a set of cajones to change up a defense that has been, mostly, very successful. It takes even bigger boys to order your entire secondary to reorganize post snap nearly every play.

I have been a critic of both Christensen and Daniel many times in the past, but if there is one thing that duo does incredibly well, it is recognizing defenses pre-snap and designing ways to defeat such.

  10. Missouri’s key to the game is to outscore Texas. That’s the only way that Mizzou has a chance to pull the upset in Austin.

  11. Gene, good point. Too bad for Mizzou we’ve got Muschamp.

  12. Henry, you make it sound so easy…

  13. Daniel has a stronger arm than Rice’s QB?? Was Rice even able to complete pitchouts? Most anything he throws over 15 yards looks like a beachball being knocked around in the stands.

As deadly as they come in the NCAA running that offense, but you don’t see too many deep flys or posts that appear to be anything more than a leaping contest after yet another flutterball or underthrow.

The Missouri Tiger have to have the personality to matchup with the Longhorn D-line and that is just something they can’t do.

  15. TXinDC, sadly I agree. Stupid Muschamp.

Daniel’s arm is not that weak. Nobody is going to call it strong, but he can throw a 40 or 50 yard ball fine, and can put some mustard on the 20 yard throws. His arm strength is not the problem.

His “knowing where he is going with the ball 85% of the time presnap” can be a problem.

Against OSU, it seemed that intermediate routes 10 – 20 yards down field were open. Problem against UT will be having time for those to develop.

  16. GC, hate to disagree with you, but all that complicated football scheme and strategy stuff won’t really matter too much in this game. We are just flat out better than Mizzou, period, and we are going to flat out beat up your football team. Our pass rush is sort of reminiscent of the Miami pass rushes of old…not as good but close. If OSU and their moribund, non-existent pass rush can give CD problems, then just imagine the kind of grief ours is going to cause him. Our pass rush is probably 3 times better than OSU’s. With a rush like that will schemes really matter all that much? This game has all the smell of a blow out for the Horns.

  17. Your analysis is stunningly prescient. You should go into politics, or a tar pit.

  18. Who cares if it is stunningly whatever or not as long as it is right. Hey, I’m a nuts and bolts kind of guy. As long as it works, who gives a shat about the how and the style…..just win baby.

  19. steven is our own little Simple Jack. Speaking of full retard … check out this week’s ESPN Mag cover.

  20. Hey, I’m a nuts and bolts kind of guy.

    less the bolts.

  21. Well, when it comes to a flimsy cardboard team like Mizzou, nuts alone is probably all we are going to need to pull out a W, so no skin off of my Longhorn back. I’ve got no problems taking one for the team.

Speaking of nuts, that’s probably another piece of the puzzle the Mizzou Tiggars are sorely lacking in. I mean, whose ever heard of a 5′10″ QB and that only in cleats who goes for 230lbs? Is it just me or does anyone else suspect that the mighty mite flea has being doing more than just eating his Wheaties up there in Columbus.

  22. You Mizzou Tiggar lovers out there might be better informed than this interweb ostracized guy from Austin, but could this lack of nutt-ness be related to all those bad hairdos and that silly cap wearing of your flea hero, CD? Could it just be that he is attempting to hide more than just his lack of talent on the football field from national TV exposure? Are you sure your once in a lifetime Heisman hopeful is not just a pre-maturely balding, sackless, semi-mobile flea QB in reality, underneath the oversized helmets, the stupid caps, the bad hair cuts, and all that blow me hoopla.

Travis Ford spent the 2nd half channeling his inner Rick Barnes — lot’s of standing around on offense while one player tries to generate something off a ball screen — then taking a forced shot.

So the Big 12 goes 5-2 in Round One.

Worst defense over the whole season,

So far on Day Two, no buzzer beaters, but there was the obligatory #12 over #5 with Cornell thumping Temple 78-65, but the Ivy League school was everyone’s “inside” pick for an upset. Still the day hasn’t come close to generating the action that Thursday had.

I wasn’t trying to say they quit. They just didn’t play hard a lot of the time. Lazy = lack of effort. Example, our transition defense was about 75% effort and 25% stupidity. We loafed down court a lot. The kids didn’t like to lose so they would fight back,

This the most disappointing team because our talent level is higher than those others.
