We Owe You A Liveblog

Posted by ChrisApplewhite on October 11th, 2008 under Football

So far the defense has been gashed with misdirection, but if protocol holds they’ll adjust mentally and improve rapidly as the day goes on.

They just held OU to a 3 and out, with OU running any misdirection. Flag though. Just a running into the kicker, which OU declines.

Texas’ OL is holding up OK but they are outclassed. We can’t get away with bad playcalls today.

Quan Cosby is a man. Did this site underrate him or what? Slightly disturbing we can’t protect Colt.

Did I say can’t protect? I don’t even think we’re trying. Let’s just put ten WR out there and let Colt find his own way.

3rd and 5, expect some fake here. OU can’t move the ball without them at this time . . . delay of game. Faked everyone in the stadium. Well played, Wilson.

Nope, straight dropback as Orakpo gets clotheslined and Kindle gets held. They aren’t calling it so more power to OU. Punt upcoming.

We are taking shots deep. Great pass break up but I support trying that once per series. Good throw better D.

Colt is scrambling right every down, this time directly into the teeth of the blitz. It’s like they knew he’d run that way or something. I don’t think we’ll score again this half. The pressure is on the defense to keep it close until something breaks.

End of the quarter. Out DTs are shredding their OL and our coverage got over it’s early mental mistakes. They are going to have to roll Bradford a lot today, and I’m not sure why we aren’t doing the same with Colt. And LEFT.

Good first quarter, but a lot of foreshadowing. I sensed 2001 (14-3 — Double digit win punctuated by a late OU score to put it out of reach) coming in and I stick to that. However, if Texas can figure out a way to protect Colt or get some flukey TD someplace else it’s anyone’s game. We’re the underdogs down 1-0 in a soccer game. We have to make something happen.

OU rolls every pass, guys are wide open. We don’t know what we’re doing right now. Easy TD that might have just ended the game. Can Texas hit 17 today? Can they sort out the no huddle with all the movement? I don’t think so.

Well, there’s our fluke. Thanks, Ghost.

spit and tears says below: “Greg Davis is calling a shitty game. We are doing nothing to exploit their defense’s aggressiveness.” I wonder what it’s like to trust your coaches. Let’s find out as the defense comes back on.

Thank freaking Gosh someone told Orakpo how to use his strength. Quick screen gets back 15. They execute so well.

Uhh . . . 21-10.

They are only freshman. They are only freshman. They are only freshman. They are only freshman. They are only freshman. They are only freshman. They are only freshman. They are only freshman.

Nothing out of the ordinary so far. OU is sticking to the basics and we are pulling Palins all over the field. I’m really surprised at the level and volume of these mistakes though. This is Florida Atlantic again, except we can’t run down OU from behind.

I’ve got to say, I’m surprised running east/west isn’t working. It’s been money in the past.

The offense found a rhythm, except for Chris O’s pass blocking lead block on the QB draw. A TD here would be huge. Huge.

As I type that another run is bounced outside for no gain. Greg Davis has the self-awareness of Buster Bluth.

Brandon Jackson is getting uppity. Keeps going for the ball and failing to account for all the grass behind Quan.

Fantastic drive ends in a TD by Cody Johnson. It was a pitch that was swarmed, but Roy Miller’s awesome block and Johnson’s power got it in. We can do that all day. If you spread OU out, there will be gaps in that zone . . . like every season over the last decade or so.

Huge hit on Bradford (Kindle)and Earl Thomas makes a great pick on the overthrow. Good defense is motherfucking invigorating. I want to go outside and tackle the mailman.

QUAN COSBY FUCK THIS COME HERE MAILMAN

Colt sacked, my blood pressure is down from oil rig to water gun. Colt draws the 167th roughing penalty of his career to save the drive and give us a legit shot at going into halftime with a lead. He also earned an Emmy nomination for “Best Acting in a Sports Drama.”

Horrible execution after the penalty and we’ll have to settle for a FG. Disappointing to be sure, but this could be a lot worse.

My halftime thoughts? Really proud of the guys for hanging tough, really, really proud of Quan shoving every negative thing anyone here said about him right back into our big dumb faces, and I am getting visibly excited about watching this defense continue to improve. Back in 15 minutes.

well I missed Texas’ opening series, but it’s 4th and ten so I guess I didn’t miss anything. OU just sprung a 40 yard screen, something they do as well as anyone I’ve ever seen, and are in the red zone. Momentum shifts are giving me a headache.

In the most unsurprising call of all time, OU runs a screen on 3rd and ten and scores easily. I announced out loud that it was coming, so you’d think someone on our team should’ve been ready. It’s practically bread and butter for them. Inexcusable lapse by the defense. 28-20 and we can’t quite get over that hump . . . just like I said would happen!

A zone handoff loses 4 yards on 2nd and 4 and I am this close to going down to the Bellmont parking lot Monday night and keying Davis’s car.

Finally a big run play thanks to 6 dominating blocks. Just great execution all around. Fozzy scores on that, btw.

Someone is going to have to get Huckleberry to write about this clutch ass team we have. Constant big plays when they are needed. We’re down by two and should go for the tie, but can you really argue against the XP? That’s a real question. What’s the play there?

Our defense reminds me of 2006. Stout run defense that gives up way too many big plays through the air.

Worst. Roughing call. Ever.

And that was grounding.

“Orakpo” is getting close to “Quan” is being shorthand for awesome. That sack will end up forcing a punt and we once again have a chance to change this game around. Also, my heart is starting to thump and I can’t type because my hands are shaking . . . fake? It’s short . . . I think I just shit a kidney.

Fuckin’ A Curtis Brown. Way to keep after that. Easy first down if he doesn’t catch the punter. They’ll review it but I think it’ll stand.

Colt is a shoe-in for that Emmy.

Ball at the 20, and this is a moment in the game where your playmaker icons start flashing. Who steps up? Horrible horrible horrible call. Horrible execution. WTF. Awful. That is Jamaal’s fumble all over again.

OK, that was incomplete, but still. A missed defensive holding, a bad pass . . Jesus Crispy Christ. Anyway, we’re winning right now. Motherfuckers.

In DVR slow-mo that looked like a catch. But the ball popped out when he fell down, after the knee hit, and it reminds me of Kelson’s Rose Bowl non-INT. Is the ruling the same? He definitely had control when his knee hit.

I would felate an old hobo for a stop right here.

Blake Gideon is our Jaxson Appel. Going to lead the team in tackles after 8 yard gains.

Is Rashard Mendenhall really that good? What is up with Illinois? Michigan is also down to Toledo in the 4th.

Anyway, end of the third and whatever happens, I’m happy with today. My friend just realized he was beginning to wonder what Texas’ ranking will be if they win, meaning we now have hopes that will be crushed by the inevitable defeat.

We just stopped a screen on 3rd and 7. I just had a revelatory moment much like our first conversion of a 3rd and 4 running play against Arkansas in 2004. Man I hope William sticks around one more year.

Roughing the kicker. Mother fucking fucker. That kicker flopped and faked injury like a soccer player. Horrible. I guess we’re even for those Colt calls now. He visibly remembers to act. 14 yard run and I might melt my couch with rage.

Two missed tackles takes a 6 yard loss to a 5 yard gain. I am hating life right now. More missed tackles, first down. This better be holding. It is. I’m trying to figure out how to put this pin back in the grenade I am holding now. Now they need to make up the other 15 they missed.

First down. We’re going to lose because a punter faked an injury. I would bet my life savings that EoT will have a 6,000 word section on the officials in GB&U tomorrow, and for once it would be well deserved.

I just noticed on the replay that Knoll didn’t even clutch the correct knee during his performance.

Anyone who saw season 4 of The Wire remembers the scene in which Chris beat Michael’s deadbeat father into an unrecognizable pulp. I am going to do that to a homeless person tonight if we lose because of Knoll.

OU had 1 guy to cover 3 WRs on that 2nd and 1 and we nearly lots 4 yards running it. Not much you can do about that before the snap, but we have automatic calls, I thought. In other news Chris O is a good little player. I wish every single running back we have didn’t try to bulk up for his soph./junior years before realizing you can’t outgrow your natural girth.

Watching both teams run the jailbreak is like watching me try to out-throw Joba Chamberlain.

In other news, quan Cosby just put Lendy Holmes vertical in mid-air with a block. If I were holding a basketball I could’ve dunked with how high I got right then.

During the review, please let me appreciate Jordan and Quan. Guys, I love you.

TD, and the men in white believe in themselves now. You can see it. If they win it will be that play + Quan’s block. There is a 70% chance OU goes three and out after this converstion attempt.

Fucking hell Quan, quit showing off. I need a cold shower.

This game is already ranks #2 in EA Sports All-Time Greatest Games. If the MNC were awarded for this, it would have a shot at #1. This is also the best Texas/OU game I’ve ever seen. The overtime game that OU won in 1996 (?) doesn’t count because two mediocre teams can’t be the greatest anything.

Big 3rd and 3. Play fake rollout coming. Nope, but they do throw and it’s tipped!

!!!!!!! Blake Gideon finally made a quasi-legal play.

OK, watch for the fake, guys?

OK, Texas ball, up by 3, 6 and a half to go. This drive will define our season. I’m not going to live blog this because nobody cares and I have more important things to do. See you in 273 seconds

YYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bill Walsh said that pass rush late in the game is the most important quality a team can have. The Cowboys are able to turn it on late, and so can we. Kindle just cut Bradford in half. Bomar’d him.

Great call on 3rd and long on a QB draw to make it a manageable 4th down. Just don’t give up 6.

Game. Game motherfuckers. HenryJames: “where’s teh crying sooner kid?” He’s in our comments section ; )

I’m ending this here. Congrats, guys.

Greg Davis is calling a shitty game. We are doing nothing to exploit their defense’s aggressiveness. I don’t expect our defense to win this game–at best, maybe we hold OU to 31 or so. The best defense is a good offense, and we don’t have it right now.

  3. rolling the pocket on every snap. We are in trouble!! The fake stretch play is killing us too. DE isn’t staying at home, and Bradford has all day to survey the field. Adjustments need to be made!! This could get ugly!!

  4. thank you ship!!!!!!

  5. It’s officially ugly.

Riddle me this: how do you not cover Jermaine Gresham? Dear god. Secondary picked a bad week for brain farts. We need to put together a drive and answer.

  7. Get Chiles the fuck off the field

  8. I wouldn’t mind taking a shot down the field on the 3 free plays OU has given us so far. That’s on Colt

  9. Those running plays to the left look great! Can someone bitch-slap Greg Davis?

  10. Good lord, the same running play!

  11. It would be nice for Greg Davis to pretend like he has nuts every once in awhile.

Can we fire Davis at halftime? What an idiot. This offensive scheme is juvenile.

Hard to win with one hand tied behind your back. Someone tell Davis we are allowed to throw to the tight end, even if it’s not Irby. OU’s not respecting it at all. And where’s Fozzy? Where’s a third receiver? How ’bout we try a running play where the RB isn’t beginning at a dead stop five yards deep? We can’t block them for more than two seconds; we need quick-hitters.

  15. It’s pretty telling when Davis can’t even meet our already low expectations. He’ll do right by his guys for 5 minutes then swtich to something else and doesn’t work. Why he can’t stick with what works is beyond me. It is not beyond Kevin Wilson.

Not only Herbie, but Corso. Good grief, he almost sounds pissed that OU isn’t blowing us out.

That’s ridiculous – Corso was blasting OU.

    That 3-and-out was UGLY.

Is Fozzy not playing because he’s injured or because he’s a freshman?

  25. bullshit late hit call. now we are even on that

  26. “Is Fozzy not playing because he’s injured or because he’s a freshman?”

A little of both I think.

  27. That was the worst play call of Greg Davis’ career.

  28. I’ll be the first to say we got a couple gifts on that one……lol!!

I guess that makes up for all the holding…..lol!!

The officials have gifted ou with two touchdowns and Texas with a field goal. They owe us.

  39. We should have never tried to block that punt. It’s mind boggling.

  40. now that’s just showboating Quan

  41. The officials have gifted UT with two bs late hit calls. One of those turned a 4th down punt into a UT scoring drive. The other also ensured a UT scoring drive as UT was stuck. Please quit bitching about bad calls. They’ve kept UT in this game, too.

  42. I agree with you Nate, 100%. But the punter thing was worse by leagues. It engulfed everything else.

    These refs are awful all-around.

I didn’t see a shot of Crying Sooner Kid (CSK) as the seconds ticked off, so it’s something of a hollow victory.

  55. That was 4th and the game. Great stand by the Horns.

dick, the refs “cheated” plenty for UT. The two late hit calls that were absolutely atrocious, and the INT that was incorrectly ruled incomplete. Bad calls went both ways, and kept both teams alive at key points. The refs called a VERY tight game. The best part though, is that the refs did NOT decide this game.

UT EARNED this one. Let me say this again. UT EARNED THIS WIN.

My final thoughts on the game.

    Why UT won:
    1) Ryan Reynolds went down. Do not bullshit yourselves about how great your defense was or the way your offense stepped up. Your defense gave up 35 points when all was said and done. Muschamp did not win this game for you.
Your offense was averaging 4 yards per play until Reynolds went out. Afterwards, they averaged 8 yards per play. The vast majority challenging young MLB Crow. There’s a reason OU coaches and every commentator called him the general of the defense. When he went down, the OU front 7 went from an A unit to a B- unit. However, injuries are part of the game, and if OU was a #1 team that was truly better than UT, this should not have mattered.

    2) The UT running game. Holy crap, Ogbonnaya did something useful that wasn’t catching a ball. Two big running plays by Ogbonnaya, no big running plays by OU.

    3) Greg Davis. I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but Greg Davis called a FANTASTIC game today. What’s more is that he did a better job than Muschamp did. I can’t believe I would ever say that. The second Reynolds went down, he went after Brandon Crow relentlessly to great effect. He changed the offense to fit the circumstances of the defense.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the #1 team in D-1A. The Texas Longhorns. Congratulations.

  56. Ransom Stoddard said:

    October 11th, 2008 at 11:11 am

What crap: Texas won because our middle LB was injured. We lost our starting TE two weeks ago or we would have blown your asses out.

  57. Ransom, we did blow their asses out.

Nate, I agree that the late hits were bad calls. They were less consequential than the two bad calls made on Texas and as you said, none of it was consequential in the end.

Don’t fool yourself on the Ryan Reynolds affect, give me a fucking break. That guy’s a weak link on that front 7 healthy or not. Yes the stats changed significantly before and after his injury but that was coincidental. He didn’t cause yall’s Dline to completely disappear. Yes the guy that replaced him sucked, but hey he plays for OU.

  58. Poor Aggies said:

    October 11th, 2008 at 11:33 am

In addition to Irby, did our most explosive RB, Fozzy, even play today?

  59. Everyone knows that the Red River Shootout runs in streaks. OU dominates, then UT dominates, and back and forth.

As an OU fan, I fear that we may have just watched the balance of power shift. The only two things that assuage this fear are the knowledge that Muschamp is almost certainly gone after this year, and the knowledge that Orakpo, Miller, Cosby, Bobino, and Shipley are gone next year. What doesn’t help: The fact that OU loses 5 seniors on the OL and the two best WRs.

  60. Show me some facts, Ransom and dick. UT averaged 4 yards per play before Ryan Reynolds went out, and 8 yards per play after. That’s a fact. UT never had the lead in the game until AFTER Reynolds went down. That’s a fact. UT scored over half of its points AFTER Reynolds went down. That’s a fact. And, my personal favorite, UT gained a wide majority of their yards and points in the middle against OU after Reynolds went down. That’s a fact. So far the responses seem to be pure retardation. Impressive.

  61. “OU is sticking to the basics and we are pulling Palins all over the field.”

I guess that means thanks to her for the win. Maybe I will return the favor.

  62. Nate:

Your team played well, but I don’t think Ryan Reynolds is the story of the game.

That said, posting with some objectivity tells me a lot about you.

    Props to you sir.

  63. Sasha_Is_A_Longhorn_Dog said:

    October 11th, 2008 at 11:58 am

And, you saw us start to make significant plays on BOTH sides of the ball. Yeah, ou losing Reynolds was big. I agree with that. But I think ultimately our guys started to wear them down… on offense and defense. And it probably would have happened if he had still been in the game.

I hope he’s ok overall, though. I hate to see any player have a serious injury.

  64. Nate, you’re really just giving an example of the results from the coincidence. Texas took the game over in all phases after OU went up 28-20. 25-7 the rest of the way with that 7 being a gift from the refs on the roughing call. That wasn’t just some MLB, who was gimpy all game, going out with an injury. Plus, I’m just basking in the win by being an asshole, don’t expect a lot of objectivity over the next few days. I agree with everything Scip said above. Yall are impressive and the scheduling gives yall a very good shot at keeping yalls Big 12 title.

Also, Bobino leaving is a positive thing or non factor at worst as he is not even a starter and Shipley will be back next year once he gets his med redshirt. Miller leaving is the biggest loss as our talented young depth at DE will help the loss of Rak.

Greg Davis. I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but Greg Davis called a FANTASTIC game today…

I agree. Davis obviously had a huge hand in the win, but can we attribute some of this to Applewhite?

  67. Greg davis did not call a fantastic game. his plyers made up for his shortcomings……again. he never once called a staright up the middle running play. a classic antecdote for a fast defense. dont be to euphoric

  68. I have a hunch that Knall will be just fine.

  69. Good night, Nate. Back to your meth trailer. And, try not to blow it up.

  70. The boys played hard, they had fun. Good kids. And OU, suck my dick.

  71. Hey Nate, your composed, rational, and sober analysis makes it a touch more difficult to rub salt in the wound. This was a fantastic game by the two best teams in the nation.

As for the loss of Reynolds, I think that that mattered in the run game but not the pass game. UT was getting whatever completions it wanted over the middle before RR got hurt. Those big runs in the 2nd half (which sealed the game) came after the injury.

As for the interception No Call in the end zone: yes, it was an interception, but that same defender should have been called for defensive holding 4 seconds earlier in the play when he was beat down the field by the TE. Had that play been properly called from the start, it would have been UT first down.

  72. dimecoverage said:

    October 11th, 2008 at 4:58 pm

I have a hunch that Knall will be just fine….

He actually hurt something on the fake punt, but probably not to the extent that he put on. Knall certainly deserves an award for his performance today. Oscar? Emmy? Take your pick.

  73. The “denied” interception by the OU player in the endzone is no different than what happened to us in the Rose Bowl when Drew Kelson came down with what I thought for sure was a pick. He had it all the way until his butt hit the ground. However, I’ve been told by several people who should know that it was not an INT. I still dunno about that.

Regarding the game I think that OU’s ability to score so quickly actually backfired on them because it allowed us to control the clock and eventually wear down the OU defense. Call it the Texas Tech effect. This was compounded by the short fields their O was given by our crappy kickoff coverage which made it even less time that our own D was out there.

  74. You guys played a great game and McCoy should lead the Heisman ballots. No mistakes, very solid.

My team? Defense SUCKS. Will lose 2-3 more games. Oklahoma State will kill us in Stillwater.

You’re headed for the national title game.

    Nate-

OU had at least 4 illegal man down field penalties that weren’t called. Your Olinemen were past the line of scrimmage repeatedly on passes that went past the line of scrimmage. Many of those were your biggest plays.

    Nate,

    Good post.

  77. A WAAAY after the fact collection of thoughts on OU-Texas.

Losing Ryan Reynolds WAS the story of the loss for OU. UT’s win was sealed once this happened.
Want more proof than I already threw out? Take a look at the smorgasbord of rejects OU has thrown out at MLB since: SS Nic Harris and converted redshirt freshman WLB Austin Box. You know that Brandow Crow guy that UT picked on so effectively? Notice how he’s nowhere to be found? That’s not an accident. The Venables defense requires that one LB completely understand his unnecessarily complicated schemes because he’s responsible for the alignment and calls of the ENTIRE DEFENSE. That was Reynolds.
Exhibit A: On UT’s TD throw to Shipley on the drag route across the back of the end zone, notice how Crow takes the stutter step? That is the only reason that play worked. UT had tried that play earlier, but it wasn’t open because Reynolds knew his ONLY responsibility was the drag route and that he had backside help (as did Crow).

NOTE (READ THIS CAREFULLY): I AM NOT SAYING THAT OU WOULD HAVE CERTAINLY WON IF RYAN REYNOLDS HAD NOT BEEN HURT. OU without Ryan Reynolds is not a Big 12 champion, let alone a national champion. Without him, we weren’t beating Texas. What I’m saying is that OU could have won that game.
UT had 7 offensive possessions before Reynolds went out. UT punted three times, and settled for FGs twice. One of those punts was a 3 and out in the 2nd half after adjustments would have been made.
After he went out, UT had 5 offensive possessions, scored TDs on three of those, hit a FG on another, and only punted once with 45 seconds left on the clock after a time killer possession.

Chris rightly said that the OU defense quit in the 2nd half. Again, that’s not because UT’s offense was suddenly some sort of unstoppable behemoth. It was exactly the same group it was in the first half. The defensive team captain who everyone on the field looked to for OU was on the sideline with a blown ACL. UT’s offense didn’t get better, folks, OU’s defense got worse and Texas had nothing to do with it.

Holding penalties. From what I saw, Loadholt had no chance at beating Orakpo on obvious passing downs short of sexually assaulting him with man-hugs, and the UT interior OL wasn’t stopping Gerald McCoy without a handful of his jersey or a triple team.

The refs in this game were BEYOND incompetent. The only person whose acting was as good as Mike Knall’s was Colt McCoy who earned an Oscar nomination on the 2nd late hit penalty.

To be fair to Knall, he wasn’t faking the injury. He flopped for sure. But he tweaked his leg on the fake punt attempt. ABC showed him stretching it on the sidelines well before the kick. Again, I’m not shocked to see a Texas board completely overlook this fact, but it’s worth mentioning.

UT’s offense wasn’t really getting it done in the first half. If OU’s kick coverage isn’t utterly incompetent, OU isn’t having to throw a Hail Mary for a reputable score at the end of the game, they’re driving for position to tie up. Another place where UT proved to be the superior team. OU has been screwing themselves with poor special teams all year.

You all should be praising Jesus/Muhammad/Moses/Buddha/Jack Daniels/Darwin that Irby got hurt. Because I seriously doubt Greg Davis gets this creative if he’s got a viable TE option, and Shipley was a damn murderer the way he was used. Blaine Irby is a non-factor if he’s in this game. Necessity is the mother of invention. Texas had a need, Davis filled it with 4 wide and Shipley.

If you haven’t noticed, DeMarco Murray just isn’t the same RB he used to be. Chris Brown is a better option right now, and that’s a damn tragedy…for OU.
What’s really ignorant is the assumption that OU isn’t a good run blocking OL. They’re a great run blocking OL IF the running scheme is downhill, I-formation, power running.
Notice how OU didn’t try ANY of that? They tried this single back, 3 and 4 wide spread option crap (along with some retarded zone-reads and shotgun draws) that isn’t getting it done against anyone unless DeMarco Murray circa 2007 is in the game to avoid ankle tackles by diving DL or Sam Bradford gets replaced by a running QB.
OU has gone back to the power running game which I think would’ve been more effective against UT than that ridiculous crap we ran.

Houston, I went back and watched the middle screens for OU. Three of them, the WR’s body was on or in front of the line, the ball made contact with his hands on or BEHIND the line. The one “blatant” play, the WR was about 2-3 feet on the wrong side of the line of scrimmage. You’re NEVER going to get that call, and you shouldn’t.
Likewise, watch Shipley’s KO return TD again. On that big hole he got, take a hard look at the left side. You’ll see an OU defender getting his shoulder pads pulled so hard it turns him around. Odd, how no one here caught that. The problem is that Shipley is going by as it happens. OU will never get that call, and they shouldn’t.

The fact that Ryan Reynolds’ injury completely changed the game proves definitively that Texas is the better team this year. Losing Orakpo, Muckleroy, or Roy Miller would not have done to the Texas defense what losing Reynolds did to the OU defense. Championship defenses don’t get gutted like that.

I’ll close with this thought. Greg Davis is looking better and better every day, and Brent Venables is starting to fill that void of “guy who should be fired but never will be”. OU needs to go out and hire a guy like Muschamp and give him the keys to the OU defense. It won’t happen though.

Here’s to UT pulling an OU circa 2000. Because that’ll have been the last time anyone has seen a team run this kind of a gauntlet.

This would probably go a bit better if you read it in your Bobby Knight voice and it had two decades worth of goodwill built up from its gratuitous appearance on a popular late night television show. But oh well.

We talked about the upset of the decade in this post, but I watched some other great basketball today I’d like to comment on.

For me, the theme of the day was well-played basketball. I’m not only talking about what Northern Iowa did, I’m talking about the other seven games being really well

Today reminded me why I love this tournament so much. A good friend of mine mentioned to me that college basketball is the great equalizer of all athletic endeavors. At least of the sports we care about. He’s right.

    Patrick,

Unless you’re completely retarded, you know precisely what I meant. The closest any Big 12 team has gotten to winning the infamous Fuller Cup is the 2007 Texas squad. I can’t remember a team being that horribly undisciplined as a whole aside from the insane OU teams of the 80’s. That’s not

I suppose anyone could be your “favorite Longhorn basketball player” but Ford did more than just about anyone…although Durant is clearly better. Ford’s supporting cast was better than Durant’s in his sophomore year. Durant’s had more talent (Augustin, James, Abrams) but Ford’s was more developed (Boddicker, Ivey, Mouton, Thomas) and had worked with him for

This notion of Hamilton as being a disaster area on defense is all a bit much. He rebounds extremely well which, if it wasn’t obvious, is extremely important in this game since it secures possession of the basketball. Winning in basketball is achieved through the scoring of baskets and it’s necessary to possess the basketball

I posted earlier about how Collins’ effort just crippled Kansas today, but what amazed me the most was his complete inability to stay in front of his man on defense. UNI got a LOT of good looks out of penetration/pass after one of UNI’s modestly gifted athletes blew right by Sherron. The best
