Jordan Hamilton

Posted by Scipio Tex on October 9th, 2008 under Basketball, Recruiting

Is a Longhorn.

Hamilton is a five star recruit, ranked 5th in the nation overall and is the top rated small forward prospect in the 2009 class according to Rivals.com. He’s joining Avery Bradley, also a five star and the 8th rated prospect in the nation and Shawn Williams, a four star from Duncanville, ranked 64th in the nation. We already have a commitment in 2010 from Tristan Thompson, five star, currently considered to be one of the five best players in the ‘10 class.

Barnes is moving this program to the next level.

It’s about goddamn time. Let us know when the next 5-star future lottery pick commits to Texas. This is getting tiresome.

  2. Ha.

Hamilton is likely a one and done guy.

Avery Bradley is a three or four year guy.

Shaun Williams is a four year guy.

Tristan Thompson comes in 2010 and he’s one or two year guy.

Intermixed with all of those dudes will be:

    4 Dogus Balbay G 6-0 176 So
    53 Clint Chapman F/C 6-10 235 So
    21 Matt Hill F/C 6-10 241 So
    1 Gary Johnson F 6-6 233 So
    24 Justin Mason G 6-2 194 Jr
    34 Dexter Pittman C 6-10 298 Jr
    23 Harrison Smith G 6-2 195 Jr
    20 Alexis Wangmene F/C 6-7 241 So
    50 Varez Ward G 6-2 190 Fr

We’re going to mess some people up.

That is pretty sick. Great balance of one & done’s with 3-4 year guys. It’s a perfect recipe for cutting down the nets in 2009-10.

    Josh Smith, your jersey awaits.

  4. It is Texas-OU week and we have not one – but two threads about a basketball recruit

    My how times have changed.

This class provides the pieces for a NC run.

I dunno about Bradley being a three- or four-year guy, but I won’t quibble.

  6. You’re probably right, Bob. More like 2-3.

  7. Russell Springman is the Tim Brewster of Texas Basketball recruiting.

That’s a load of talent. It’s always fun to play around with matching current players with former stars for that perfect, although unattainable, team.

Could you imagine the ‘09 and ‘10 kids if you could plug in say Karl Willock, Jose Nasser or even Bill Wendlandt? Or perhaps Chick Zomlefer? Off the hook.

  10. Who will be our Winn Shepard?

Rick Barnes recruits the way I wish Mack would.

  12. Sweet fucking christ. Barnes is Jesus.

  13. Also, I think Barnes would win 8 games on the gridiron due to Todd Wright alone.

  14. Hamilton is silky smooth. He and Bradley will make Shaun Williams very dangerous.

  15. Next year looks pretty cool but what about this year?

Is Dexter still pushing 300 pounds? Has Todd Wright finally met his match? I was really hoping that Dexter would get in great shape and turn into a monster big man.

It looks like we have two “new” guys coming in:
    * Dogus Balbay (not really new but dnp last year)
    * Varez Ward

Both are 3 star recruits. I hear that Dogus does not shoot too well outside. I don’t know much about Varez except that he is a shooting guard.

So who starts this year: James, Mason, Johnson, Atchley, and Abrams? Is there any way Barnes starts a 3 guard lineup again (since neither Mason nor Abrams is a true point guard)? Maybe Balbay (once he has completed his NCAA punishment) starts instead of Johnson. That would mean we have the same starting lineup as last season except replace Augustin with Balbay. Since Balbay is probably not going to be a big scorer, the other 4 guys will need to elevate their game quite a bit to make up for the loss of Augustin’s scoring.

Who plays a bunch off the bench?

The Big 12 media have selected OU as the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 basketball championship over UT and KU.

  16. Winn Shepherd? What about a Tony Watson?

This is good. Texas-ousucks weekend and we are talking serious hoops. I can’t wait.

  17. Kafka:

Dexter is actually entry #1 in Wright’s book of body realignment. I think his body fat went from around 40% to 15% under Wright’s tutelage. He’ll play around 295, but it will be distributed a lot differently. I think he gives us 15-20 great minutes a game.

Dogus isn’t a great shooter, but he can score the basketball inside the lane. He’s very athletic and should be a mature influence given his international experience.

Varez Ward is a potentially great defender that Wright and Barnes will mold into a stopper and four year guy.

Barnes will always intermix his program with these guys and the superstuds. The four year guys provide stability and a blue collar ethos that Barnes wants. I applaud him for it.

I wouldn’t worry about who starts or comes off of the bench. We’re going to go 10 deep and everyone is going to play.

My only fear is that we have one big man too many and that could lead to a transfer. Next year, some pressure is relieved with Pittman and Atchley graduating. I don’t think that considering a shirt for the odd man out is a bad idea.

Hard to find minutes at 4 & 5 for Hill, Wangmene, Johnson, Chapman, Pittman and Atchley.
Some think Gary could play some 3. I don’t see that against a real opponent.

  18. Pittman’s just a junior, right Scipio?

I think we need one of the bigs to RS this year. Just don’t ask me which one, because I like them all. If forced, I’ll go with Chapman.

  19. Yep, good catch. Thanks for setting me straight.

  20. Quick note on Dogus. He’s the type of kid that will develop into a great long range shooter in time. He’s got a nice midrange game already. He’s certainly no Doug Gottlieb. The list of average college point guards developing into dangerous long range guys is long and distinguished. So is my johnson.

Hurley, Hardaway, Bruce Dalrymple ;), Sherman Douglass, etc. But it’s not 8 am. yet and I’m drunk.

  21. Scipio:

“Dexter is actually entry #1 in Wright’s book of body realignment…He’ll play around 295, but it will be distributed a lot differently. I think he gives us 15-20 great minutes a game.”

The goal for Dexter was 270. Todd has not met that goal and it looks like he has given up on ever getting Dexter to 270. I saw what Dexter looked like last year at 298, he lacked explosion, speed and stamina. He pretty much had to be used in a zone on D because he lacked the speed to play man to man. Maybe this year he carries the weight better.

Dexter has a special talent and if he could get in good shape, he could be an outstanding player.

“Dogus isn’t a great shooter, but he can score the basketball inside the lane.”.

OK, but we already have guys who can score inside. Pittman and Johnson live inside, and Atchley, Mason, and James will probably focus quite a bit on improving their inside scoring. It really helps an offense when the guard shoot well outside and don’t have to clog up the middle to score.

If Dogus does not shoot well outside, his defender can sink back. This not only makes it tough for Dogus to drive but it also means that Dogus’s defender can provide help out D on other horns.

    Trips:
I would not be surprised at all if Dogus develops a good shot down the road but does it happen in the next 6 months? Maybe, maybe not. Having said that, the college 3 is an easy shot and if Dogus can hit an uncontested 3, that is probably good enough. If he can’t, that’s a problem.

“I wouldn’t worry about who starts or comes off of the bench. We’re going to go 10 deep and everyone is going to play.”.

  22. Say Scipio Tex. Hamilton is going to need at least 2 years. Shawn Williams is 3 years max, not 4.

  23. Now if only mack could get some 5 stars. Rick Barnes needs his own stadium. look at his recent stars.

    T.j Ford
    LaMarcus Aldrige
    Kevin Durant
Dj Augustin (i know i spelled that wrong)
and with this 08-09 team who knows who might step up. We know Abrams is a 3-point monster.
but Damion James is also great.
I see alot of retierd jerseys in the future

I know exactly what you are talking about. Pitiful defense. We open the second half giving up about 4 easy buckets on run-outs. Damion shoots a three, Mason watches and does not get back, easy bucket. Lucas gets beat down court and gives a way a soft foul for a 3 point
