I’m usually not too emotional when movie stars like Paul Newman pass away, but he was different. At least to me anyway. My grandmother is one of the most interesting people I know. She’s a walking encyclopedia of Texas history, and specifically the Panhandle. Her grandfather originally moved to the area in the 1880’s and lived in a dugout in the Palo Duro Canyon, while working on the JA Ranch. She doesn’t forgot a detail of the stories and tales that have been passed on to her over the years. Indian scares, Lobo wolf hunts, bad winters, bear in the bar at Claude, Colonel Goodnight, chasing Quanah Parker, etc. Armstrong is really one of the historically underrated counties in the state, but I’m biased. However, the coolest story she ever told me was how she got her social security card. You see, Hud was filmed in Claude, TX and instead of bringing in actors from California, they hired locals who auditioned as extras. You can see the back of her head on the bus scene. But, anyway, to get paid she was now required to be in possession of a social security number.
For some reason, that simple fact magnetized me to almost every Newman movie and he typically delivered even with a shitty script in some cases. And to this day, I still watch Hud, Cool Hand Luke, and Color of Money any time I catch them on the tube. I think these are three movies that capture Newman’s range better than any others. If you haven’t seen them, take that pinko commie card out of your wallet, burn it, and replace it with a Blockbuster card. Sometimes nothin’s a real cool hand.

Interesting, in that same bus scene the camera zooms past my cousin standing behind his counter.

Enjoyed your post. I’m Irish and although great storytellers, they are not as quick – at least in my family – to put things down on paper. We’re losing my Dad’s generation and many of the great family tales and legends are being lost forever. I encourage you to find some way for your Grandmother to make a record of this incredible family history for future generations.
Just a thought.

As great as Newman was in Cool Hand Luke, Strother Martin got the best line: “What we have here is…failure to communicate.”
Newman was a great actor – 10 Academy Award nominations attest to that. RIP.

Butch Cassidy: “Listen — I don’t want to sound like a sore loser, but if when it’s over I’m dead, kill him.”

I would put the Hustler ahead of Color of Money, the later being more of a Tom Cruise movie.

Hud is one of my favorite all-time movies.
“Little by little the look of the country changes because of the men we admire.”
I’m still a sucker for Slapshot as well.

For my money, his best performance came in “The Verdict,” which is perhaps one of the two or three best screenplays I’ve encountered (a Mamet adaptation). Worth watching if you haven’t seen it.

Hud is just greatness. Every male that’s ever been even slightly associated with Texas should be forced to watch it for every five years that is added to his life. The older you get, the more sense it makes.
“It don’t take long to kill things, not like it takes to grow.”
“This country is run on epidemics, where you been? Price fixing, crooked TV shows, inflated expense accounts. How many honest men you know? Why you separate the saints from the sinners, you’re lucky to wind up with Abraham Lincoln. Now I want out of this spread what I put into it, and I say let us dip our bread into some of that gravy while it is still hot.”
“You don’t care about people Hud. You don’t give a damn about ‘em. Oh, you got all that charm goin’ for ya. And it makes the youngsters want to be like ya. That’s the shame of it because you don’t value anything. You don’t respect nothing. You keep no check on your appetites at all. You live just for yourself. And that makes you not fit to live with.”
“Happens to everybody. Nobody gets out of life alive.”
There really isn’t any line in that movie that isn’t worth memorizing, and it’s impossible to imagine any actor other than Newman doing that role after he so fucking did it.
He’s the James Dean that didn’t go so fast, but, ironically, dedicated the rest of his life to racing cars.

Newman was always bothered that so many viewed Hud as an anti-hero getting what he could from an unfair world, when the clear point of the movie was that Hud – for all of his shallow charms – was a piece of garbage.
Of course, this only reinforced the genius of the movie.
