Has Fulmer finally worn out his welcome?

Posted by mdr on September 22nd, 2008 under Football

The fat man fell to Florida once again on Saturday and the Volunteer faithful are not happy. After last year’s blowout in Gainesville, the Vols had a lot to prove on Saturday in Knoxville. What they proved is that the Tennessee Volunteers are a program in decline.

Everyone pile on…..now!

We begin with Gary Parrish of CBS

Now to Andy Staples of SI

Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sun-Sentinel has seen a few Florida – Tennessee games in his day

Even Dick Weiss from the big apple has an opinion on the great pumpkin’s job status.

Not looking good for the bald, bloated, beleaguered dean of SEC coaches.

How’s it going, coach? Not too good?

  1. He’s done.

  2. Anyone know how much it’s going to cost em to buy out his contract?

  3. From Bruce Feldman’s blog:

Tennessee was awful. I can’t believe that after the way UF’s players called the Vols out for quitting in last year’s game and that was how they responded. I’ve never seen Phil Fulmer look so frazzled.

  4. And the inevitible online petition:

    http://www.petitiononline.com/UTcoach/petition.html

  5. He can’t win a damn thing without Cutcliffe.

  6. Hell, he was done after UCLA.

He didn’t lose 66-3, 65-13 or 63-14. We know from experience that some of those routs don’t get you fired.

  8. O rly?

  9. Bob, 66-3 got Mackovic fired.

    And Carl Reese “retired”.

  11. Could be the reason for Tennessee decline has to do with demographics and its geographic location. It is a school that is the most northernly located in the SEC, I believe, or at least, it’s very close. Most of talent in the SEC seems to reside in Southern portion of the SEC, along the coastline from Florida to Louisiana. And with strong schools and coaches in the south, it may just be that Tennessee is unable to get the same level of recruits that it once did. Whenever you see a school decline like Tennessee has, it ultimately comes down to poor recruting. Afterall, recruting is the name of the game in college football. It would appear that all the street agents that proliferate in the SEC have just gone and dumped Fulmer for some of the other Southern schools. Maybe it’s just that Tennessee’s pay scale hasn’t kept pace with the other schools in the SEC, or, maybe, Tennessee’s decline has to do with Fulmer being punished for ratting out Alabama in their cheating scandal. Afterall, squealing is a big no no and has no place in the rat infested league known as the SEC. Yep, more likely than not, all this probably has to do with that. Fulmer is just getting his comeuppance for being a rat fink. Just goes to show you, there is justice in this world, if you did not happen to know this already.

  12. Oh, and for anyone who just happens to think that Fulmer’s decline has to do with his sudden loss of coaching acumen, all I have to say is Les Miles. The man who is living proof that the words “Less is more” is more than just phrase. Les is sort of an example of how little intelligence or actual coaching ability matters on the college level. And for all those who are on the Saban’s jockstrap, if you haven’t noticed, LSU hasn’t skipped a beat since he left and was replaced with that moron, Miles. Just goes to show you exactly how important Saban really was to that program. If anything, LSU has gotten better since he left, not worse. LSU has a machine running in Louisiana right now and it wouldn’t matter if they plugged in Bulwinkle as head coach (they sort of already have), they would still win with the kind of talent they have on hand right now. And all that with a man such as Les at the helm who would probably give VY a run for his money on the Wunderlic test. He is a perfect fit for the LSU program. You know what they say, “Birds of feather flock together”.

  13. “it wouldn’t matter if they plugged in Bulwinkle as head coach”

Kids do not want to play for Bullwinkle. He would be a horrible recruiter and no one would take him seriously.

  14. I think Tennessee has experienced a shortage of slutty girls, and everyone knows no slutty girls means no good football players.

  15. Yep, Stuck, I admire a man of brevity, although I often am unable to imitate one, much to my dismay. I think that you have pretty much summed up my posts in just one sentence. And I am glad now that it seems as if everyone is on board and have come to an agreement and recognized the basic fact that football=sluts. I just wanted to do a public service and clear up any confusion with regard to this matter. I feel relieved that we now all agree and recognize that football and sluts go together like dogs and fire hydrants.

  16. Fulmer killed his recruiting success when he went state’s evidence on me, Momma and ‘Bama. Now, everyone in the SEC except him can cheat…and does so with regularity. That makes a big difference in recruiting down there.

  17. I know that the post above mine is bullshit. Albert Means could never spell the word “regularity”.

We’ll find out on March 18th. Meet Wake Forest.

dick, thanks for the heads up on the east bracket. In my haste to get the post up I had a brain cramp on the bracket.

As for KU, when you compare their bracket to Syracuse you have to scratch your head. Even Self mentioned as much.

Scooby, you’re probably right about the 8/9.

I have been thinking that the team quit on Barnes some time during the last 14-15 games.
My brother in Michigan thought the the team fell apart after the 11-12th game of the season I think that it was atm @CC game.
I wonder if Barnes has health issues, he just looks bad on TV and

Marquette line really surprises me. I like Washington and normally I would be impressed with a conference tourney winner but that falls under the Pac 10 sucks rule to me. I would have liked to see Washington lined up against a different 6 seed.

Call me crazy but I would prefer to face OSU over any of the other three 2 seeds. They basically lost to Michigan (who truly sucks) on Friday, played Illinois even yesterday and beat an exhausted Minnesota team today. They aren’t exactly on fire. As for the other #2’s, I have no interest in playing

Utah State can really shoot it. They’re the top 3 point shooting team in America. But they struggle against quicker athletes and can be banged inside. the big 12 isn’t getting a lot of credit so the line is short, imo

I posted my picks, but as you stated Richmond looks like easy money.

I think Purdue is a shell and Siena is experienced, athletic and talented. Saints roll.

I’m fading Gonzaga and St Mary’s. Zero athletes on those clubs.

I”m also fading Michigan State with NMSU. They’ll be able to get shots against

I like UTEP and Wake to add to Trips bets, which I support fully.

    Siena = 3 units

Well… it’s not going to be easy.

First off, let me get this straight. As the committee says, they seed based on an S-Curve. So by that logic, this is how they see the top 16…

    1. Kansas
    2. Kentucky
    3. Duke
    4. Syracuse
    5. Kansas State
    6. Villanova
    7. West Virginia
    8. Ohio State
    9. Georgetown
    10. New Mexico
    11. Baylor
    12. Pittsburgh
    13. Vanderbilt
    14.

No problem. I do futures all the time so I have obsessed over that decision many times. Letting $100 25-1 odds ride as long as you can is much more intense.

Mike Iupati will get taken by the Cowboys if he’s on the board. I wouldn’t hate a Golden Tate pick, but we have much bigger needs along the OL and secondary rather than getting another WR. We already have a ton of money tied up in the position (when we pay Austin).

We earned a 7 seed and will face Georgia Tech in Milwaukee on Thursday. If we survive that we face Ohio State in the second round. Shoot well and we can make the sweet 16. I’m relieved that Lunardi missed on his 8 seed projection for us. I’m much less worried about Ohio State than
