That’s 11 in a row, but who’s counting?

The University of Georgia Bulldogs posted their 11th straight victory with a dominating performance against Arizona State in Tempe.

This game saw the UGA pass rush finally making some progress, albeit against a lesser quality OL than they will see in the coming weeks. There were still far too many penalties, even discounting one or two that were completely fabricated by the ridiculously incompetent Pac-10 crew, and the UGA backfield is still sorely missing Brannan Southerland. However, the positives certainly outweigh the negatives this week and the Dawgs managed to hold on to their lofty ranking for once.

The main story from this game though is a true freshman wide-out from Summerville, SC. Anyone who even slightly follows recruiting knows who AJ Green is. He was a youtube sensation long before he ever played a down of college ball. But Saturday night in the desert was AJ’s official introduction to the college football world.

On the first play from scrimmage, Georgia QB Matthew Stafford tried to hit Green deep in man coverage. Stafford overthrew the pass by a yard or so, but for the rest of the first half, AJ Green was blowing up the Sun Devil secondary. He finished the game with 8 catches for 159 yards and a TD. Seven of his catches came in the first half against man coverage. Green will almost certainly draw early double teams from Georgia’s next few opponents. When that happens, expect to see Knowshon Moreno running wild and Mohammed Massaquoi getting a lot more opportunities.

Green’s monster night may have answered a very important question for the Dawgs. Who is going to step up and be the go to guy at receiver? Stafford has all the talent in the world, but he has yet to have a guy that he could always count on out there. If Green can become that guy, there is no limit to what this Georgia team can accomplish.

    Second longest winning streak in the country, and Bama will not put an end to it. I have rarely seen a more overblown, overrated team than the Crimson Tide.

    Last year everyone picked UF to beat us, then Auburn, then Hawaii. This year it was South Carolina, then Arizona St, now its Bama. We just keep on winning.

    I am mostly referring to the “experts” that we see on tv every week. May, Holtz, Corso, Howard, Herbstreit, etc…..

    I imagine UGA will be favored in this game since its at home. However, I can guaran-damn-tee you that we will be picked to lose by the majority of the ESPN crew and their followers.

    Its gonna be a great game, I think. I wouldn’t be much of a fan if I thought my team was going to lose though.

    I don’t think Bama is quite ready to step up to the upper echelon of the SEC. They aren’t terribly far away, but they aren’t there yet.

    I think they will pull off a big win or two later on (Auburn, I’m looking in your direction), but it won’t be in Athens.

    Conversely, Georgia beat up a shitty ASU squad, gave up 21 pts to Georgia Southern and hung a mighty 14 on a Cocks team that beat Wofford (tee hee) by 10 and lost to Vandy.

    Stafford has been careful with the ball (no picks) but has only thrown 5 TDs in 4 games. Will he be able to deliver if you face a team that can bottle up Moreno? Or is that scenario inconceivable in Dawgland where losing just never happens?

    Athens doesn’t offer an imposing home field advantage like Tiger Stadium or the Swamp … you lost to the Cocks last year, barely beat Troy in a shootout and beat Kentucky by 9. You play teams closer than you should.

    That felt like every game for us last year, hopefully less so this year. I just don’t see the domination a #3 team should inflict on all opponents.

    The only stat that matters is wins and losses. I couldn’t care less how many touchdowns Stafford throws as long as keeps the interceptions to a minimum, continues to call the right plays at the right time, and gets the ball to AJ Green whenever possible.

    btw, Richt is 40-7 at home. I’d say that’s a pretty good record.

    The bark is more than the dawg’s bite IMO.
    While you have superior skill position players, Bama is more physical than Georgia based on what I’ve seen this year. The recent losses on the OL will catch up to you come conference play.

    Just so you know, during the 11 game winning streak, UGA has won 9 of those games by 10 points or more. I wouldn’t call that a struggle by any means.

    The 21 that Southern scored came against 3rd teamers and walk-ons.

    As for South Carolina, they almost always play Georgia tough. The last two times UGA won the SEC, 2002 and 2005, they beat Carolina by a whopping 8 points combined. You can not judge a UGA team by the way they perform against the Gamecocks. For whatever reason, that game can get very sticky.

    Also, what is it about this 11 game win streak that has you so impressed other than a win over Florida? Streaks usually don’t get much play until they’ve spanned more than one entire season, i.e. going undefeated like Texas in 2005, or USC from the late 18th century until just recently. ESPN loved talking about that one. Then Vince Young came along. Now he’s backing up Kerry Collins … life is funny like that.

    I’ve seen streaks in my underwear that are more impressive that Georgia’s Most-of-2007-and-part-of-2008 win streak.

    I look forward to continued debate of the merits of your Georgia Bulldogs on what has become the NAFTA of college football message boards. Maybe we should just let you and dedfischer square off in the Battle of The Unprovens? You can both wear black & red and start a QB from Texas.

    I wrote a post recapping last Saturday’s game. I used the 11 game win streak as a headline because I like the way it sounds.

    Nothing more.

    I barely mentioned it.

    The main crux of the post was AJ Green. You are the one turning it into something else.

    Your argument about UGA playing people too close holds no water when you see the actual margins of victory from the games in question.

    The Southern game was never close for one second and South Carolina is almost always a tough game for Georgia.

    These are not excuses, they are facts. A person who doesn’t know or understand the history of the UGA-South Carolina series can’t speak intelligently about it anymore than I could write an informative post about the series between Texas and Rice. I know nothing about it, so I keep my mouth shut. See how that works?

    A win over the Dawgs by a ’slightly’ overrated Tide sounds better than just Bama beating Georgia.
    I think Bama could be a 10 win team if they find a way to win in Athens. By the way, my two most overrated preseason picks were WV and (sorry mdr) Georgia. So I’m expecting the slightly overrated Crimson Tide to beat the overrated Dawgs this Saturday. Hookem Tide!

    Texas is 38-1 against Rice since 1966. That is all you need to know.
