UT #1 For 3rd Year In A Row In Merchandise Sales

Posted by srr50 on September 10th, 2008 under Football

The Vince Young Saga has turned into a Soap Opera in Nashville, but for Texas, it is still a box office winner. When Young led Texas to the National Title in 2005, he also took the Horns to the top of the list for collegiate merchandise sales. According to the Collegiate Licensing Company, Texas once again is the leading brand with over $8 million in sales. Texas set the record with almost $8.6 million in the national championship season. For the 2006-07 school year, the Horns racked up over $7.5 million in sales.

CLC owns the rights to over 180 colleges, including most of the BCS schools, with notable exceptions such as USC, Ohio State and Texas A&M.

The Southeast Conference dominates the Top Ten as might be expected.
1. Texas
2. Michigan
3. Florida
4. LSU
5. Notre Dame
6. North Carolina
7. Georgia
8. Alabama
9. Penn State
10. Tennessee

The licensing of collegiate apparel and merchandise is relatively new. Collegiate Licensing Company was started in the early 1980’s by former Tennessee football coach Bill Battle. He was the youngest NCAA head coach in 1970 at the age of 28. He was 59-22-2 in 7 years as the Vols coach (Phil Fulmer played for him), but was fired after consecutive 5-loss seasons.

Battle had played for Bear Bryant at ‘Bama, and he got the Crimson Tide to sign on as the first school to let CLC handle their licensed sales. CLC now oversees the licensed sales for over 180 schools.

Other Big 12 schools in the Top 75

11. Oklahoma
14. Kansas
17. Nebraska
24. Missouri
29. Oklahoma State
30. Texas Tech
34. Kansas State
40. Colorado

  1. Now I understand why I pay for bottled water in monthly installments at DKR Memorial Taco Bell Death Star Happy Super Cool Fun Times Stadium and Litigious Ego Freak Field. We need the money.

That being said, there’s no amount of money I wouldn’t pay for an official Johnny Walker jersey. Seriously.

  2. The indispensable UT merchandise items-

    1. The talking pen that plays Craig Way’s Rose Bowl TD call. This picks me up when I’m blue.
    2. A burnt orange knit shirt made of material that wicks out moisture (Nike dri-fit, or Cutter&Buck’s version), because about 15% of our home games are played in sub-85 degree temperatures.
    3. The classic Texas baseball cap- white, with orange bill, and orange block “T”. This 90 year old cap design was good enough for Billy Disch, Bibb Falk, Bobby Layne, Burt Hooten, Roger Clemens, James Street, every Street man-child, Gus, Augie, and it’s good nough for you.

    Not needed-
    1. The bottle opener that plays “The Eyes of Texas”. Thanks, but three of them is enough. Please stop giving them.

  3. All I need is a cool buzz, some tasty waves, and I’m fine.

  4. Some minor sociological observations on teamwear:

    1. One day at Disney World would be enough to convince an anthropologist that the US middle class now defines itself largely through its college football affiliations. Compared to twenty years ago, the number of Americans wearing team jerseys, t-shirts, and caps is somewhat amazing.
    2. One day in any European city, summer of 2008, would be enough to convince any Red Sox fan that Bostonians had dispersed across the Globe, en masse.
    3. One simple “¿Qué?” from any of the Chowd-geared Europeans quickly disabuses one of the notion that these folks have strong feelings about baseball.
    4. Good travel advice: refrain from flashing the horns at someone abroad until you’re certain they understand the Texas gear they’re wearing. A tip: cough the name “Mackovic” repeatedly until you get a response.
    5. If you fail to heed this travel advice, prepare to be pummeled by gangs of angry cuckolds who support Real Madrid.

  5. The talking pen that plays Craig Way’s Rose Bowl TD call. This picks me up when I’m blue.

I prefer the bottle opener that plays that Rose Ball call.

  6. How about the fact that the University Co-op is #1 local liscensee in the country? Wow.

When we went down to LA for the Michigan Rose Bowl game, the Rose Bowl vendors told us they had never seen anything like the Texas fans, that we bought everything not nailed down. Wisconsin fans were a distant, distant second. As I negotiated for his stained-but-authentic official Rose Bowl smock, I reminded him that Texas playing in the Rose Bowl was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us. Some dude strolling by in an authentic #10 Nike Dri-Fit Teamwear Texas jersey disagreed.

Chooky nails it, except that I’m not big on the Johnny Walker jersey. I have my own Bret Stafford No. 10, though (a gift).

  9. Be thankful you don’t have to spin it like Bill Byrne:

“Officially licensed collegiate branded merchandise generates a lot of income to colleges and universities across the nation. Did you know the third most licensing revenue nationally is being generated from sales of Victoria’s Secret and their sales of an exclusive Pink Collegiate Collection?”

Never a shortage of Texas guys needing an oil-change shirt, or a shirt for wipin’ off the pole before your sister uses it (’cause dad taught you to), or a back-up for ridin’ on back of the trash truck.

  12. I’m sorry BFS, but did you just insinuate that UT fans are low class? A Sooner fan just insulted UT fans for being low class? Next thing I know the USSR is going to laugh at the US for it’s economic downfall in the 80’s and NSYNC (you know the one BFS) is going to make fun of my choreographed dancing in their comeback tour.

Luckily my Dad grew up in a trailer park, so I have some sympathy from where you are coming from. Still, what a world we live in.

    I really like Cal today.

    gotta,

I think your overall point is a good one. Barnes is a “system” guy especially defensively, which plays into how he overall plays the game. He wants to play a high pressure, overplay man2man scheme predicated on effort, good technique and overall quickness. Similar to Duke, but even Coach K (in fairness

What a glorious, glorious day of basketball at the Ford Center Saturday.

First, Ali Ali Farokhmanesh and all the other Panthers with cool names took down Kansas as Sherron Collins made his best effort to shed that “clutch” label on the last game of his collegiate career. Then of course, Kansas State waved goodbye to Jimmer

    Offense

Both teams are unselfish and preach sharing the ball. A&M is a balanced scoring team. Sloan showed in the first round against Utah State, for example, that he can defer when his teammates have things going. Purdue once again will have to rely on JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore to produce, and hope

I’m with you the off season is already old. I’m ready for the season to start. NDS I am completely fascinated by the Tech vs. Lech business. I can’t believe they ran off the guy that put them on the map and subsequently ended up with an arguable upgrade in Tubs.

Got a little time this morning and I’m rearing to talk some football.  Here’s what the depth chart looks like headed into spring and a few thoughts:

    Offense

QB  Sr. Taylor Potts/Sr. Steven Sheffield – We’ve all annointed Sheffield as the starter, and I think that’s the case if we continue to run 99% of our snaps

lawdog – on the topic of regression, this crew can’t compare with the senior seasons Thomas and Atchley put up. Something ain’t right in this scenario. Mason topped out his sophomore year and Pittman last year.

Wangmene is ‘Manos de Piedra’ redux, so that was really never going to work out.

Unless you’re completely retarded, you know precisely what I meant. The closest any Big 12 team has gotten to winning the infamous Fuller Cup is the 2007 Texas squad. I can’t remember a team being that horribly undisciplined as a whole aside from the insane OU teams of the 80’s. That’s not
